Mr. Sanford Johnson, 73, of Thomson died Saturday, April 26, 2003, in Thomson Manor Nursing Home.
Graveside services were held May 17 at 3 p.m. in Westview cemetery with the Rev. Mike Sutphin officiating.
Survivors include four sisters, Jessie Mae Chalker, Thomson, Sara McNeely, Gibson, Virginia Moore, Avera, and Annie Grace Johnson, Mitchell; and one brother, James Jordan, Louisville.

Velma Dye Kitchens
Mrs. Velma Dye Kitchens, 97, of Gibson died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at the Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Kitchens, a native of Glascock County, was retired from the Louisville Shirt Factory. She was a member of the Mitchell Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace H. Kitchens and a grandson, Wayne Kitchens.
The funeral was May 27 at 3 p.m. at the Mitchell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jamie Hawkins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her son, Bobby K. Kitchens and his wife Eulawynne of Gibson; five grandchildren, Billy Frank Kitchens, John Kitchens, Barbara Sharpe, Sye Martin and Dean Reese; and 14 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Dean Reese, Earl Smith, Kendall Chalker, William Wilcher, Lewis Griswell and James B. English.

Mrs. Sarah Phillips, 105, of Wrens died Monday, May 19, 2003.
The funeral was May 22 at noon at Noah's Ark Baptist Church, Waynesboro, with the Revs. Karlton Howard and J.J. Smith officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a brother, Rev. Tammie Lewis, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; devoted nephew, Willie (Ann) Lewis, N.Y.; nieces, Willie Mae Greenwood, Waynesboro, Elizabeth Lewis and Willie Mae Martin, Ft. Lauderdale; godchildren, LeRoy (Carrie) Jordan, Wrens; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Mary E. "Lib" S. Richardson
Mrs. Mary E. "Lib" S. Richardson, 90, of Orangeburg, SC, died Friday, May 23, 2003, at the Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Richardson, a native of Jefferson County, was the daughter of the late Charles Wynn Stephens and Annie Barton Stephens. She was a retired secretary from H.U.D. in San Francisco, Calif., and also worked in Washington, DC. She formerly worked with the American Red Cross in Hawaii in WWII. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer and the Moultrie Chapter of the D.A.R. She was the widow of James David Richardson.
A memorial service will be held June 23 at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer with Father George Retstaf officiating. Interment will be held June 28 in Wrens Cemetery.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Norma Stephens Godowns, Orangeburg; a brother, Charles Wynn Stephens Jr., Wrens; a stepson, Robert Richardson, Vallejo, Calif.; eight grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

William Monroe Sims
Mr. William Monroe Sims, 65, of Stapleton died Tuesday, May 20, 2003.
Mr. Sims was a retired salesman for Ameri-Move of Augusta. He was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church and a member of the Adult Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas "Tommy" Luther Sims Jr.
The funeral was May 23 at 11 a.m. at Reedy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Martha English Sims; two sons William "Bill" Monroe Sims Jr. and Genell Cliatt, Lincolnton, Michael R. Sims, Stapleton and his friend Kim Oliphant, Thomson; one brother, Jerry Sims, Decatur; and four sisters, Alice Rampley, Valdosta, Lucy McMullen, Chatsworth, Dorothy Bishop, Bozeman, Mont., and Barbara Belcher, Snellville.

Mr. Virgil "Pee Wee" Cunningham Sr., 71, of Louisville died Sunday, May 25, 2003.
Mr. Cunningham, a native of Burke County, lived most of his life in Jefferson County.

Mrs. Laura Hodges Devero, 93, of Wrightsville died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Washington Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Devero lived most of her life in and around Wrightsville. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
Survivors include her children, Jimmy (Marium) Devero, Lake Wales, Fla., Annie Ruth (Napolian) Armstrong, Doris (Arnold) Gilmore and Climmie (Dorothy) Devero, Wrightville, Florence (Harold) Parks, Jacksonville, Fla., Tommie (Linda) Devero, Miami, Fla.; four siblings, Willie Mae Lymon, Dublin, Ocie Albert, New Port News, Va.; 22 grandchildren including three that she raised as her own, Del Lee (Eunice) Devero, Louisville, Ricky (Mary Ann) Devero, Wrightsville, and Melvin Devero, Lake Wales; 29 great-grandchildren, 10 great great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Daisy Belle Gaston Farrer
Mrs. Daisy Belle Gaston Farrer, 93, of Moxley died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Haven House Hospice in Sandy Springs.
Mrs. Farrer was retired from the Louisville Shirt Factory and had lived in the Louisville area for 60 years. She was a member of the Moxley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her children, Henry, John and Bill Farrer.
The funeral was May 29 at 2 p.m. at Moxley Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Burial was in the Moxley Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary (Norman) Baker, Cumming; two sons, Joe Farrer, Cumming, and Ike Farrer, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two sisters, Nell Creech and Edna Gaston, Moxley.

Mrs. Imogene Kirkland Ervin of Tuscon, Ariz., died Sunday, May 18, 2003.
Mrs. Ervin was born in Meigs County, Tenn., on March 13, 1938, to James Kirkland and Geneva Plemmons.

Deacon Lee Wright Hicks Sr. of Bartow died Thursday, May 29, 2003.

Russell Perry Scarboro
Mr. Russell Perry Scarboro, 85, of Wadley died Saturday, May 31, 2003.
Mr. Scarboro was born in Johnson County and had lived in Wadley all of his life. He was a former member of the Wadley City Council and a former member of the Jefferson County School Board. He had owned and operated Scarboro Service Station and Garage in Wadley for many years. He was retired as a vocational education teacher from the Wadley High School and also retired from the Jefferson County PWC as a correctional officer. He was a veteran of WWII and a member of the American Legion Post 225. He was a member of the Wadley United Methodist Church where he had served as administrative board chairman, lay leader and Sunday school teacher of the Men's Bible Class for 40 years.
The funeral was June 2 at 2 p.m. at Wadley United Methodist Church with Dr. Larry Sauls and the Rev. Kenneth Watkins officiating. Burial was in the Wadley City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Inez Whitehead Scarboro, Wadley; a daughter, Daphne (Wayne) Scarboro Sanders, Wadley; two granddaughters, Kailie and Karley Sanders, Wadley; a brother, Joe Scarboro Sr., Harrison; and a sister, Virginia Scarboro Smith, Augutsa.
Pallbearers were Greg Scarboro, Craig Scarboro, Keith Scarboro, Miles Scarboro Jr., James Moxley and George Moxley.

Mrs. Annie Wallace, 79, of Wadley died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Jefferson Hospital.
Mrs. Wallace, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Kingdom Hall. She was retired from Glendale Nursing Home.
The funeral was June 7 at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness. Burial was in the New Fleming Baptist Church Cemetery.

Leon McDonald
Mr. Leon McDonald, 90, of Thomson died Monday, June 2, 2003, in the VA Medical Center in Augusta.
Mr. McDonald, a native of Glascock County, had lived in Thomson for several years. He was an Army veteran of WWII and a member of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church. He was a farmer.
Graveside services were held June 5 at 11 a.m. in the Mt. Beulah Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Bill Seaman and Dr. James C. Elder Jr. officiating.
Survivors include two nieces, Venice Hildebrand and Ruth Butler, both of Thomson; two nephews, Vinson McDonald, Thomson, and Allen McDonald, Lawrenceville; and several great nieces and nephews and several great great-nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and nephews-in-law.
