Lucille Brown Upton
Mrs. Lucille Brown Upton, 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mrs. Upton, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.

The funeral was Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church with the Revs. Carl Simmons and Perry Daniels officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include Willie James Upton, Tampa, Fla., Carolyn Tremble, Mary Alice Smith and Jerry Upton, Louisville; sisters and brothers, Mary Alice Wicker, Annie Maude Davis, Dorothy Wicker, Avera, William "Speed" Brown, Augusta, and Nathaniel Brown, Louisville; step sisters, Rosetta Habersham, Wrens, and Mary Alice Andrews, Augusta.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Eloise Cobb Parker
Mrs. Eloise Cobb Parker, 87, of Griffin died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Griffin.

Mrs. Parker, a native of Abbeville, had lived in Wadley since 1948. She was a homemaker and a member of Wadley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Parker.

The funeral was Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at Wadley Baptist Church with the Rev. Otis Andrews officiating. Burial was in the Wadley Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Gayle Parker Claxton, Griffin, and Karen Parker Harris, Spartanburg, SC; a sister, Mary Cobb Jenkins, Macon; two sisters-in-law; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Moses Lockhart
Mr. Moses Lockhart of Louisville died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003.

Mr. Lockhart was a 20-year United States Army veteran.

The funeral was Dec. 13 at noon at Eden Baptist Church in Louisville with the Revs. James O. Nelson and John A. Lockhart officiating.

Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Nipper, Columbia, SC; a sister, Eunice L. Lockhart, Louisville; four brothers, Rev. William (Dessie) Lockhart, Wadley, James A. Lockhart and Edgar (Viola) Lockhart, Louisville, and Johnny (Kim) Lockhart, Augusta; two great-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Garrer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Kathleen Perkins Hewett
Mrs. Kathleen Perkins Hewett died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003.

Mrs. Hewett, a native of Louisville, was the daughter of Dr. H.C. and Ruby Holladay Perkins. She lived in Louisville for 45 years. She also lived in Augusta, Orlando and Jacksonville, Fla., and Wilmington and Pittsboro, NC. She was a professional artist and an activist for peace, women's rights and the environment. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Hewett.

A memorial service will be held in Louisville in June.

Survivors include her daughters, Krystal Hewett Kilbourne, Jacksonville, and Joy Hewett, Pittsboro; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Jacob H. Holley M.D.
Jacob H. Holley M.D., 69, of Donalsonville died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003.

Dr. Holley, a native of Wrens, was the son of the late Kinchen G. and Carrie Arrington Holley. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army Reserve. After graduating from the University of Georgia and receiving his M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia, he interned at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany where he also studied anesthesiology. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene where he served as a member of the board and as a trustee. He was the current medical director of the Seminole County Public Health Department, the former chief of staff of Donalsonville Hospital and an active staff physician at that same hospital. He was the sponsor of the Betty Neal Holley College Scholarship for deserving Seminole County High School graduates.

The funeral was Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene in Donalsonville with the Revs. David Farling and Eric Boomer officiating. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Neal Holley; six children, Rhonda H. Payne, Brenda Holley Zachary, Jacob H. Holley Jr., Jeffrey N. Holley M.D., and Joy H. Bell, all of Donalsonville, and Betsy H. DuBose, Eufala, Ala.; three brothers, John C. Holley, Knoxville, Tenn., Marcus A. Holley, Eastman, and James "Bo" Holley, Wrens; one sister, Farris Lazenby, Lumberton, Ms.; and 13 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Dr. Charles O. Walker, Dr. Charles A. Walker, Dr. Milton Jones, Franklin Boulineau, Bennett Avery and David DuBose.

Honorary pallbearers were the men of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Memorials may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, Betty Neal Holley Scholarship Fund, c/o Commercial State Bank, P.O. Box 217, Donalsonville, GA 39846.

Dr. William Claiborne Clary Jr.
Dr. William Claiborne Clary Jr., 95, of Toccoa died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003.

Dr. Clary, a native of Harlem, lived in Stephens County most of his life. He attended Emory University and received his bachelor of science from the University of North Carolina. He served as vice president of the First National Bank in Waynesboro and then as president of the Bank of Wadley before serving as chairman and president of the Bank of Toccoa in 1955. He was also instrumental in establishing Carnesville State Bank in 1960. He had served as president of the Georgia Bankers Association, as Mayor of the City of Toccoa, was a member and past chairman of the Stephens County Development Authority, and served on the Stephens County Hospital Authority for 16 years. Prior to his career in banking, he served as principal in several Georgia high schools and established the School of Banking at the University of Georgia where he once served as Dean of the school. He also founded the School of Banking at Kennesaw State College. He was a member of the Toccoa Rotary Club, the Elks Club, the Atlanta Athletic Club and the Georgia Board of Education. He was a member and deacon of Grace Baptist Church where he served in various areas of the church. The Clary Center at Stephens County Hospital, the W.C. and Frankalene Clary Science Building at Toccoa Falls college and the W.C. Clary Distinguished Lecture Series at Kennesaw State College were all named in his honor. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Frankaline Walters Clary.

The funeral was Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. at Grace Chapel on the Campus of Toccoa Falls College with Dr. Henry Fields, the Rev. Joel Bradberry and Judge Alton Adams officiating. Burial was at Stephens Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Steele Savage Clary; a daughter, Alice McGregor, Cornelia; two sons, Frank Campbell Clary, Dallas, and W.C. Clary III, Franklin, NC; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-daughters; four step-grandchildren and two brothers.

Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church or to the W.C. Clary Jr. Scholarship Fund at Toccoa Falls College.

Whitlock Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Parham McNair
Mrs. Dorothy Parham McNair, 68, of Stapleton died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003.

Mrs. McNair, a native of Warren County, had lived in Glascock County most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church where she was a member of the Willing Women Sunday School Class. She was the daughter of the late Johnnie Parham and the late Annie Reynolds Parham.

The funeral was Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Beulah Baptist Church with the Revs. Russell Davis and Don Reeves officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth McNair; two brothers, Joe Parham, Lincolnton, and Henry Parham, Warrenton; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Leroy Usry, Sam Kitchens Jr., Glenn Mooney, Gary Mooney, Chad Foster and Michael Penno.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Beulah Baptist Church, c/o Kay Langham, Rt. 2 Mt. Beulah Rd., Warrenton, GA 30828.

Elizabeth Ann Tatum Pate
Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Tatum Pate, 95, of Gibson died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003.

Mrs. Pate, a native of Danville, Ark., was a member of the Gibson United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Elizabeth Pate.

Graveside services were held Nov. 28 at 11 a.m. at Macon Memorial Park with the Rev. Griffin Thompson officiating.

Survivors include two daughters, Marcia Jackson, Ft. Payne, Ala., and Claudia Carney, Gibson; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Gary Mitchell
Mr. Gary Mitchell of Sandersville died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Oconee Regional Medical Center in Milledgeville.

Mr. Mitchell, a native of Washington County, was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

The funeral was Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion AME Church and cemetery in Davisboro.

Survivors include his children, Simonica Mitchell, Louisville, Sharrone Mitchell and Degarius Mitchell, Sandersville; his step-father, Jimmy Young, Sandersville maternal grandmother, Mary Fort, Davisboro; paternal grandmother, Ola Mae Young, Mitchell; siblings, Gloria Best, Rochester, NY, Jewell Grant, Sandersville, Elaine Brown-Gardner, San Antonio, Texas, Harvey Hamp Jr., Atlanta; two grandchildren; four uncles; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jeffrey Stephen Rabun
Mr. Jeffrey Stephen Rabun, 42, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, in Orlando, Fla.

Mr. Rabun, a native of Peach County, attended Perry schools. He was a flight attendant for United Airlines for the past 14 years.

The funeral was Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. at Perry First Baptist Church. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Rabun of Perry; two sisters, Julie (Mike) Layfield, Perry, and June (Gary) Gilbert, Grayson; two nieces and three nephews.

Mr. Rabun was the grandson of the late Rufus "Red" Smith and Ethel Smith McGahee of Wrens and the nephew of Wayne and Cornelia Smith, Wrens, Sandra Huff, Atlanta, and Harold and Carol Smith, Stapleton.

Mildred V. Brinson
Ms. Mildred V. Brinson, 62, of Wrens died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003.

Ms. Brinson, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of the Harts Grove Baptist Church and its usher board.

The funeral was Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. at Harts Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. W.L. Jones officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Dana (Ricky) Huff, Wrens, and Carnell (Andrew) Hobbs, Atlanta; three sisters, Florrie Smith, Wrens, Betty Johnson, Augusta and Ceola (Morris) Hannah, Wrens; one granddaughter; and several other relatives.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Lewis "Buddy" Kelley
Mr. Lewis "Buddy" Kelley, 79, of Augusta died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Kelley, a native of Glascock County, retired from the maintenance department of Lily Tulip/Sweetheart Company after 36 years. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Julia Kelley Usry.

The funeral was Dec. 26 at 3 p.m. at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Boyd officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Elmer Johnson Kelley; one son, Clary Kelley, Augusta; one daughter, Sandra Kelley (Marshall) Skinner, Evans; one brother, Willis Kelley, Stapleton; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, GA 30904.

William Robert Hobbs
Mr. William Robert Hobbs, 84, of Wadley died Monday, Dec. 25, 2003, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Hobbs was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation and was a member of Kendall Heights Church of God.

The funeral was Dec. 26 at 2 p.m. in the Sandersville Chapel of May and Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. James Bridges officiating. Burial was in White Oak Methodist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Lou Pool Hobbs; a sister, Marie Miller, Augusta; and four step-sons, William Bridges, Jimmy Lee Bridges, Joe Bridges and Ronnie Bridges, all of Sandersville.

May and Smith Funeral Directors, Sandersville, was in charge of the arrangements.

Reba Waters Curl
Mrs. Reba Waters Curl, 84, of Savannah died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, in Memorial Health University Medical Center.

Mrs. Waters, a native of Atlanta, attended Wadley High School and had lived in Savannah for over 60 years. She was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Leila Cox Circle of Love. She was a retired bookkeeper with Starland Dairies where she had worked for over 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, John I. Curl Sr.

Graveside services were Dec. 24 at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Steve McGuiar officiating.

Survivors include a daughter, Pat C. Tuttle, Savannah; a son, John I. Curl Jr., Savannah; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Island Chapel, Savannah, was in charge of the arrangements.
