Barbara Ann Stewart Prescott
Mrs. Barbara Ann Stewart Prescott, 55, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003.

Mrs. Prescott, a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, was a homemaker. She was a member of Wrens Church of the Nazarene where she was the church secretary/treasurer and Sunday school teacher. She was a survivor member of the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life Matthews Team. She was preceded in death by her father, Lester Stewart.

The funeral was Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bill Ansley officiating. Burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemebery.

Survivors include her husband, William Norwood Prescott St.; two sons, Tanny Prescott, Mitchell, and Bill Prescott, Matthews; three daughters, Dianne Rabitsch, Millen, Susan Buckner, Stapleton, and Lisa Usry, Matthews; her mother, Elizabeth Huff, Stapleton; three brothers, Terry Stewart, Hephzibah, Lonnie Stewart, Stapleton, and Lynwood Stewart, Martinez; two sisters, Geraldine Snipes and Sarah Snipes, Keysville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Bruce Dowdy, Brad Phillips, Jeff Jones, Hayes Radford, George Snipes, Vic Crenshaw, Oliver Russell and Jimmy Pittman.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life Matthews Team.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Rd., Augusta, GA 30910; Wrens Church of the Nazarene, P.O. Box 116, Wrens, GA 30833; or American Cancer Society, Relay for Life Matthews Team, P.O. Box 5, Matthews, GA 30818.

Walter B. Reid
Mr. Walter B. Reid, 85, of Stapleton died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 at the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville.

Mr. Reid, a native of Columbia County, was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of the American Legion and of the Jefferson County Historical Society. He also served in the Army in combat as a Sergeant and Gun Commander in WWII, North Africa and Europe. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Mary Virginia Reid.

Graveside services were held Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. at Reedy Creek Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Jones officiating.

Survivors include his daughter, Sandra R. (Thomas) Tucker III, Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one brother, Gene Reid, Stapleton; one sister, Ruby Gunby, Augusta; two grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the American Legion.

Memorials may be made to the Reedy Creek Baptist Church, Reedy Creek Baptist Church Road, Stapleton, GA 30823.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Jo Sandeford
Mrs. Betty Jo Sandeford of Midville died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003.

Mrs. Sandeford, a native of Jefferson County, was a homemaker and a member of Midville United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the administrative board. She was a member of Midville Garden Club. She attended Bessie Tift College in Forsyth and the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She was the daughter of the late Joseph McDaniel and Marie Kennedy.

A memorial service was held Jan. 1 at 3 p.m. at Midville United Methodist Church with the Revs. Tony Smith and Larry Sauls officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Hogarth Sandeford; one son, Ralph H. (Jamie) Sandeford, Midville; one daughter, Marie S. Rachels, Waynesboro; and three grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Midville Garden Club and the Women of the Midville United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Midville United Methodist Church or the United Methodist Church Children's home.

William R. "Buddy" Anderson
Mr. William R. "Buddy" Anderson, 79, of Sylvania died Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at Sylview Heath Care.

Mr. Anderson, a native of Screven County, was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in World War II. He was an electrician for Torrington Co. for 20 years and a member of Sylvania First Baptist Church where he was a Deacon. He was also a member of the Guy Smalley Bible Study Class. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Mock Anderson.

The funeral was Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at Sylvania First Baptist Church with the Rev. Lonnie Norris, Linda Lariscy and Donnie Hopkins officiating. Burial was in the Screven County Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca A. and Lee Woods, Wrens; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry A. and Karen Anderson, Sylvania; one sister, Christine Anderson Taylor, Woodbridge, Va.; one brother, Nelson Anderson, Sylvania; two grandchildren, Alan Anderson, Statesboro, and Mitchell Woods, Wrens; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Danny Bishop, Lee Mock, Len Mock, Donnie Hopkins, Owen Woods and Tom Avret.

Honorary pallbearers were the Sunday School Class of Sylvania First Baptist Church, Lucius Waters and Rev. Edward Hunter.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund at Sylvania First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 318, Sylvania, GA 30467.

Alvis A. Dye
Mr. Alvis A. Dye, 77, of Tyrone died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005.

Mr. Dye, a native of Glascock County, was a self employed general contractor.

Graveside services were Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. in the Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Mitchell, with the Rev. Tony Key officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby H. Dye; one son, Robert Dye, Canton; four daughters, Emma Freeman, Daphene Chaffin and Alicia Dye, Grantville, and Nancy High, Dearing; one brother, Archie Dye, Houston, Texas; two sisters, Gypsy Strickland and Katie May Brewer, both of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Starling Funeral Home, Harlem, was in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas J. Hughes
Mr. Thomas J. Hughes of Morrow died Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, at Southern Regional Medical Center.

The funeral was Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Thomas L. Scroggs Funeral Directors with the Rev. Lee Ayers officiating. Burial was at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include daughters, Janice Shannon, Jonesboro, Cynthia Puckett, Forest Park and Christy Hughes, McDonough; sisters, Myrtice Thigpen, Greenwood, S.C., Juanita Reese, Martinez, and Pauline Brooks, Newnan; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Joe Nelson Johnson Jr.
Mr. Joe Nelson Johnson Jr. of Wrens died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005.

The funeral was Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. at Wrens Chapel AME Church with Pastor Roy Mathis and Presiding Elder Ella Smiley-Samuels officiating. Burial was in Sugar Hill Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, William J. Johnson, Rahway, N.J., and Paki Johnson, College Park; one daughter, Jeanyne K. Johnson, Las Vegas; two brothers, Jerome C. Johnson, Baltimore, and Jar M. Johnson, South Orange, N.J.; two sisters, Janice C. Johnson, Las Vegas, and Joann L. Johnson, Baltimore; mother-in-law, Martess Davis, Wrens; his fiancé, Mary E. Freeman, Wrens; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Pallbearers were Ralph Jordan, Lawrence Clarke, Donald Watson, Sidney Chappell, Gilbert Taylor and Butch Bryson.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Carolyn Wilcher Jones
Mrs. Mary Carolyn Wilcher Jones, 77, of Augusta died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005.

Mrs. Jones, a native of Glascock County, made her home in Augusta for the past 13 years. She was a retired housekeeping supervisor at Gibson Rest Home. She was a member of Pine View Baptist Church and Faith Sunday School class.

Memorial services were held Nov. 13 at 11:45 a.m. at Pine View Baptist Church with the Revs. Michael Davenport and Albert Osborn officiating.

Survivors include one daughter, Jacquelyn English; one granddaughter, Cassandra Griffith; great-granddaughter, Evangeline Griffith; one brother, Thomas S. Wilcher; one sister, Marjorie Wilcher; and several other relatives.

Memorials may be made to Pine View Baptist Church Building Fund, 154 Davis Road, Augusta, GA 30907.

Willie Anderson Walker
Mr. Willie Anderson Walker, 67, of Wrens died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005.

The funeral was Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at Wrens Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Gary Jouett officiating. Burial was in Wrens Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife, Lucinda Neal Walker; his children, Ada Denise Walker and Annie Ruth Walker, Wrens, John Wesley (Becky) Neal, Manassas, Va., Willie (Theresa) Neal, Irving, Texas, and Christopher Brown, Gresham, S.C.; siblings, Eunice Hudson and Lee Walker, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Louise Walker, Henry Walker and Robert Walker, Wrens, Louise Neely, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Charlie Dixon, Dania, Fla., Roy Dixon, West Palm Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and two aunts.

Rachel Keever Lytjen
Mrs. Rachel Keever Lytjen, 88, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005.

Mrs. Lytjen, a native of Salisbury, N.C., was the daughter of Daniel M. and Bess C. Keever. She moved to Savannah where she attended Armstrong Junior College and was a member of the college's first graduating class. She was a homemaker and a community volunteer. With friends, she began the Pink Ladies volunteer organization at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was active in Beta Sigma Phi service sorority. Later she worked for DeRenne Elementary School as a reading specialist. She was preceded in death by her husband John Lytjen.

Graveside services were Nov. 11 at 10 a.m. in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure cemetery with the Rev. Patrick O'Brien officiating.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Jack and Sandy Lytjen, Savannah, Dan Lytjen and Mary Minor, Virginia, and Lokey Lytjen and Bill Collins, Wyoming; her sister, Lindsay Keever Mahaney, Louisville; two granddaughters, Ashley and Kelly Lytjen; and several nieces and nephews.

Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors island Chapel, Savannah, was in charge of the arrangements.

Frances Louise Peebles Newman
Mrs. Frances Louise Peebles Newman of Grovetown died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005, in Doctors Hospital, Augusta.

Mrs. Newman, a native of Stapleton, was a homemaker. She was a member of Clifford Memorial Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the Grovetown Senior Center. She is preceded in death by her husband Lindsey Newman.

The funeral was Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Thomas L. King Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frank Thigpen officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Newman, Appling, Wayne Newman and Curtis Newman, Grovetown, and Larry Newman, Aiken; one daughter, Betty Smith, Grovetown; four sisters, Gladys Hammett, Vera Allen, Lois Tankersley and Dorothy McNair, all of Thomson; 27 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

Lewis Usry
Mr. Lewis Usry, 88, of Thomson died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005.

Mr. Usry, a native of Jefferson County, lived most of his life in Thomson. He was the son of the late Tom and Emma Marsh Usry. He was retired from National Homes and was a member of First Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his wife Inez Irby Usry.

Graveside services were Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church cemetery with Dr. James Ramsey officiating.

Survivors include daughters, Edna Kennedy, Thomson, and Kinda Bradley, Rex; sons, Kenneth L. Usry, Thomson, Dennis W. Usry, Martinez, Tommy Usry, Evans, Billy R. Usry, Union Point; son-in-law, Roy Mathis, Griffin; brother, Ray Usry, Grovetown; sisters, Dessie Newsome, Warrenton, Blanche Kitchens, Gibson, and Mary Landrum, Warrenton; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1205, Thomson.
