Alma Hughes Thigpen
Mrs. Alma Hughes Thigpen, 93, a resident of NHC Health Care Center, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Self Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Thigpen, a native of Stapleton, was the daughter of the late Pete and Angelo Kelley Hughes. She had been employed by Greenwood Mills, Mathews Plant, and was a member of Abney Memorial Baptist Church.

A memorial service was held Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. at Abney Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Ted Williams offi ciating. Burial was Sept. 3 at 2 p.m. in Holly Wood Cemetery, Orange City, Fla.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Abney Memorial Baptist Church building fund, 208 Panola Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.

Harley Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.

Marion Davis
Mrs. Marion Davis, 84, of Louisville died Friday, May 19, 2006, at Heritage of Old Capital Inn.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and a member of Waldens United Methodist Church. She was predeceased in death by her husband, J. Broadus Davis.

The funeral was May 22 at 3 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy White officiating. Burial was in Waldens UMC Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph Davis, Wrens, and Randy Davis, Avera; two daughters, Shelby Shelton, Gibson, and Betty Norton, Louisville; six brothers, Melvin McGahee, Aiken, S.C., Ralph McGahee, Wrens, D.W. McGahee, Louisville, Fay McGahee, Louisville, Eddie McGahee, Okla., and Harold McGahee, Stapleton; two sisters, Gladys Willis, Albany, and Frances Bradley, Waynesboro; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Tommy McGahee, Frank McGahee, Leon Peebles, Brian Davis, Chris Davis and Nathan Norton.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Jerri Renee Duncan
Miss Jerri Renee Duncan, 35, of Savannah died Wednesday, May 17, 2006.

Duncan, a native of Fairfax, S.C., was employed by Consolidaated Investment as the supervisor of their stores in Georgia.

A memorial service was held May 20 at 3 p.m. at New Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Lloyd Greene officiating.

Survivors include her parents, Ora Manning Davis and Louis P. Davis Sr.; two sisters, LouAnn (James) Davis, Burnett, and Laurie (Chris) Davis, Augusta; two brothers, Louis Davis II, Augusta, and Lee (Rachel) Davis, Matthews; and several other relatives.

Memorials may be made to Heritage Academy, 2230 Broad Street, Augusta, GA 30904 or to any charity of your choice.

Rosa Battie Morgan
Ms. Rosa Battie Morgan, 85, of Bartow died Sunday, May 14, 2006.

Ms. Morgan was a member of New Fleming Baptist Church and the Fair and Honest Society. She is preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Morgan.

The funeral was May 20 at 2 p.m. at New Fleming Baptist Church and cemetery in Bartow.

Survivors include six daughters, Catherine (Robert) Lewis, Rose Marian (Freddie) Thomas, Barbara A. Battie, Brenda (Willie L.) Jackson, all of Bartow, Elizabeth (Benjamin) Thompson, Sandersville, and Linda M. (Raymond) Pearson Jr., Hephzibah; three sons, Leroy (Lydia) Battie, Deerfield Beech, Fla., Eddie Lee (Hilda) Morgan, Bartow, and Larry (Sheila) Washington, Tennille; one sister, Annie Wesley, Pleasantville, N.J.; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

John Olin Newsome
Mr. John Olin Newsome of Augusta died Friday, May 19, 2005, at Augusta Hills Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Augusta.

Mr. Newsome, a native of Glascock County, served his country in WWII while in the Navy and then served in the Korean Conflict while in the Air Force. He also worked in the textile industry. He is the son of the late Robert and Amy Newsome. He is also preceded in death by two brothers, Lamar Newsome and Ralph Newsome; and one sister, Ethel McGahee.

Graveside services were May 23 at 11 a.m. at Jordan Chapel Church of God cemetery in Edgehill with the Layspeaker, Mr. Lewis Wells officiating.

Survivors include four brothers, Lonnie Frank Newsome, Gainesville, Fla., Eugene Talmadge Newsome, San Diego, Calif., William Melfin Newsome, Sarasota, Fla., and Thomas Newsome, Powder Springs; two sisters, Ophelia Hammett, Stapleton, and Brenda K. Lett, Elyria, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; and a good friend, Kenny Parish.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Pinkie Jean Walden Reames
Mrs. Pinkie Jean Walden Reames of Bath died Friday, May 19, 2006.

Mrs. Reames, a native of Glascock County, was the daughter of the late Gozie and Emma Jeanne Hawkins Walden. She had been a resident of Bath since 1946. She retired from Bath Mill in 1985 after 39 years of service. She was a member of Edgehill First Church of God.

The funeral was May 22 at 3 p.m. at Hatcher Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Perry Walden, Bob Still and Adam Hensley officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens, Graniteville, S.C.

Survivors include her son, Harold Reames, Bath; daughters, Harriett Reames Jones and Hilda (Roy) Reames, both of Bath; brothers, J.C. Walden, Waynesboro, and Linder “Big Jim” Walden, Wrens; sisters, Hazel McDonald, Gibson, Ogle Sammons, Edgehill, Ethel Newsome, Belvedere, S.C., and Annette Marschie, Brownsville, Wis.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bobby Storey, Mark Robinson, Patrick Robinson, Perry Walden, Jeff Walden and Kenny Skinner.

Hatcher Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Langley, S.C., was in charge of the arrangements.

Carey John Reynolds
Mr. Carey John Reynolds, 49, of Bartow died Thursday, May 18, 2006, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Reynolds, born in Richmond County, lived there all of his life. He was an auto mechanic.

Graveside services were May 21 at 3 p.m. at the Bartow cemetery with Chaplain Frankie May officiating.

Survivors include his mother, Grace Reynolds, Bartow; brother, Garnett (Charlotte) Reynolds, Gordon; sister, Diana (Bill) Periman, Louisville; niece, Emily Morgan, Statesboro; nephews, Robbie Morgan, Statesboro, and Wesley Morgan, Louisville; two special friends, Jerry Brown, Gordon, and Aubrey Ledger, Bartow.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Cora Lee Todd Wright
Mrs. Cora Lee Todd Wright, 81, of Milledgeville died Wednesday, May 17, 2006.

Mrs. Wright, a native of Jefferson County, made her home in Milledgeville since 1944. She was a retired employee of Central State Hospital and a member of Oak Grove Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late Luther and Bernice Newsome Todd.

The funeral was April 20 at 11 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Kittle officiating. Burial was in West View Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Robert A. Jackson; daughter, Virginia Baxter, Milledgeville; three sons, Danny Butts, Milledgeville, Robert G. Butts, Washington and Randy Butts, Sugar Valley; two sisters, Hazel Todd Black, Augusta, and Helen Wilcher, Edgehill; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Gideons or to the American Cancer Society.

Ruby Bridges Fair
Mrs. Ruby Bridges Fair, 94, of Louisville died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006.

Mrs. Fair was a life-long resident of Jefferson County and of the Baptist faith. She was the wife of the late Mr. Ernest Vaught Fair, great-grandmother of the late Justin Lamb and sister of the late M.O. Bridges, Agnes Bridges and Reba Sheppard.

The funeral was Dec. 16 at 11 a.m. in the Louisville City cemetery with the Rev. Larry Montgomery officiating.

Survivors include a son, Roy V. Fair, Snellville; a daughter, Pat Lamb, Louisville; a brother, Otis Bridges, High Springs, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Cleve Lamb, Beth Lamb, Gwen Stropoli, Paige Brown, Sam Fiar, Kimberly L. Krumm and Deborah E. Geise; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Louisville, 101 East Ninth Street, Louisville, GA 30434.

Wilbur Hudson Godowns
Mr. Wilbur Hudson Godowns, 89, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006.

Mr. Godowns, a native of Jefferson County, lived most of his life in Louisville. He was a member of Duharts Baptist Church for 57 years and was a deacon for many years. He was a retired farmer. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Pauley Daniel Godowns.

The funeral was Dec. 17 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home of Louisville with the Revs. Michael Allen and Marvin Goodman officiating. Burial was in the Louisville City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Earlean Godowns; two daughters, Jean McGahee and Anne McGahee, Louisville; two step-daughters, Dale Clements, Wrens, and Diane Johnson, Wrens; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Billy Godowns, Johnny Goodin, Larry Boulineau, Billy Weatherford, Ricky Godowns and George Lord.

Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Godowns, Bob Godowns, William Johnson, William Daniel, Steve Sheram, William Rabun, Lucius Miller, Greg Clements, Greg McDonald and Billy Samples.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Grady Warren Linnenkohl
Mr. Grady Warren Linnenkohl, 86, of North Augusta, S.C., died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006.

Mr. Linnenkohl, a native of Jefferson County, was retired from the civil service. He was a member of First Baptist Church of North Augusta, the Sheffield Club and the Campbell Sunday School Class. He is preceded in death by a grandson, Stephen Troy Bean.

The funeral was Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of North Augusta with the Rev. Jerry T. Matthews, Dr. Gary C. Redding and the Rev. Mack Enfinger officiating. Burial was in Pineview Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita S. Linnenkohl; two daughters, Elaine Maxwell and Miriam Powell, both of North Augusta; one granddaughter, Heather Eloy Van De Weghe.

Pallbearers were Dan Price, Carlton Thompson, Charles Taylor, Richard Griffis, Bill Taylor and Bud Maxwell.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of North Augusta, 602 Georgia Ave., North Augusta, SC 29841; or to the charity of one’s choice.

William Ridgeway “Pat” Murphy
Mr. William Ridgeway “Pat” Murphy, 79, of Leesburg died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006.

Mr. Murphy was born in Bartow on April 26, 1927, the son of Tarver Simeon Murphy and Willana Beasley Murphy. The Murphy family moved to Swainsboro in 1929 where Mr. Murphy spend his formative years. After graduating from Swainsboro High School in 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy where he served for three years. He then continued his education at the University of Georgia where he received his degree in 1951. Mr. Murphy had lived in the Albany area since 1953, where he was the broker/owner of Century 21 Realty, Pat Murphy Agency. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was an active participant in the Church Missions Committee and the Disaster Relief Ministry. He was a member of the Albany Bulldog Club and the Albany Jaycees where he was a past president.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Nunnelly Murphy; his son, John Ridgeway Murphy; two sisters, Maybess “Sue” Cone, Tucker; and Isabel “Bibble” Gurley, Americus.

Ethel Pauline Smith
Mrs. Ethel Pauline Smith, 91, of Wadley died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006.

Mrs. Smith, a native of Emanuel County, lived in Wadley most of her life. She was a homemaker. She is preceded in death by her husband Edgar Smith and son, Edgar L. Smith.

The funeral was Dec. 16 at 10 a.m. at Lambs Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. J. Larrie Smith officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, Leonard H. Smith, Wadley, Rev. J. Larrie Smith, Belair, Md., and Tildon W. Smith, Valdosta; one sister, Mary Alice Lumpkin, Decatur; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Edgar L. Smith, Matthew Smith, Mark Smith, Josef Smith and Leonard Smith Jr.
