Darlene Baxley Peeler Kitchens
Mrs. Darlene Baxley Peeler Kitchens, age 46, of East Dublin, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2006, at Emory Hospital in Atlanta following a brief illness.

Mrs. Kitchens was a native of Jefferson County. She was a graduate of Brentwood School and a graduate of the Georgia College and State University School of Nursing. She was employed as a Registered Nurse with the Veterans Hospital in Dublin. She was a member of the Smyrna Baptist Church and the Sigma Theta Tau Honorary Society.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. in the May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville with Rev. J. Emory Lindsey officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Kevin Ellis Kitchens of East Dublin; a son, William Thomas Peeler Jr. of Mt. Vernon; her mother and father, Eugene Harold Baxley and Charlotte Ann Jackson Baxley of Davisboro; a stepson, Matthew Eric Kitchens of East Dublin; two sisters, Donna (William) Dukes and Tammie (Kenneth) McBride, both of Davisboro; nieces and nephew, Bryan Dukes, Tiffany Dukes, Charity McBride and Kristtapher McBride; and a close friend, Nona Lord.

May and Smith Funeral Directors was in charge of the arrangements.

William “Jump” Brown
Mr. William “Jump” Brown, 71, died Monday, July 10, 2006, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Brown received his education in the Jefferson County School System. At an early age he joined Springfield AME Church. He relocated to Augusta in 1965 and joined Truevine Missionary Baptist Church in Augusta. He was a brick mason.

The funeral was July 13 at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church with Pastor Perry Daniel officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three sisters, Annie M. Davis, Mary A. Wicker, Dorothy (Billy) Wicker, all of Stapleton; brother, Nathaniel Brown, Augusta; and two step-sisters, Rosetta Habersha and Mary Alice Andrews.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Betty R. Goodwin
Mrs. Betty R. Goodwin of Martinez died Monday, June 10, 2006, at Hartland Hospice, Augusta.

Mrs. Goodwin, a native of Americus, lived most of her life in Augusta. She was a homemaker and worked for T’s Restaurant for several years. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.

Graveside services were July 13 at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park with Ronnie Crawford and Bruce Tanner speaking.

Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Goodwin; sons, Allen Turner, Josh Gary Turner, Augusta, Dan Turner, Interlachen, Fla.; step-son, Steve Goodwin, Stapleton; one daughter, Gayle Harrison, Louisville; step-daughter, Jan Tanner, Thomson; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Hatcher, Chance & Hydrick Funeral Home, Martinez, was in charge of the arrangements.

Annell Gray
Mrs. Annell Gray of Evans died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Gray lived most of her life in Evans and was a member of First Baptist Church of Evans. She is predeceased by her parents, Frank and Fannie Adams and her sister Edith Hensley.

The funeral was July 14 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Evans with the Revs. Robert Rayner and Steve Spencer officiating. Entombment was in the Mausoleum at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include her husband John “Johnny” T. Gray; two sons, Larry (Sandy) Gray, Evans, and Roger (Ginger) Gray, Martinez; two daughters, Nancy Johnson, Evans, Bonnie (M.L.) Hadden, Avera; one brother, Harold D. Adams, Marietta; three sisters, Doris Buck, Augusta, Norma Boyd, Boca Raton, Fla., Frances Delong, Gainesville; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were George Gray, Dean Adams, Al Gray, Thad Gray, Bruce Gray, Tracy Harris, Keith Gray and Braddy Hadden.

Memorials may be made to The Make A Wish Foundation of Georgia and Alabama, 1230 Johnson Ferry Rd., Ste. E40, Marietta, GA 30068, or The MCG Children Heart Program, MCG Foundation, 919 15th St., Augusta, GA 30912.

James “Danny” Gunby
Mr. James “Danny” Gunby of Martinez died Tuesday, July 11, 2006.

Mr. Gunby, a native of Wrens, was the owner of Gunby Refrigeration Service. He served in the U.S. Navy with 14 years of service and three tours of Vietnam.

Graveside services were July 13 at 11 a.m. at Westover Memorial Park with the Rev. Michael Davenport officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Gunby; two sons, James Sead (Jo Ann) Gunby, Lawrenceville, and Randy (Ashlee) Gunby, Appling; a sister, Kathern Wilson, Irwinton; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Lavern Anthony Jordan
Mrs. Lavern Anthony Jordan died Friday, July 7, 2006.

Mrs. Jordan, a native of Montgomery, Ala., was the daughter of Jimmy Johnson and the late Mrs. Julia Mae Gary.

She fellowshipped with Bethel AME Zion Church and True Vine Temple, Spring Lake, N.C.

The funeral was July 11 at noon at Colvin Funeral Home Chapel, Fayetteville, N.C., with the Rev. Alvonia McCoy officiating.

Survivors include her husband, James E. Jordan; a son, Jamie L. Anthony, Fayetteville, N.C.;’ father, Jimmy Johnson; three brothers, Jimmie, Anthony and Johnny (Renee) Gary, Kannapolis, N.C.; one sister, Teresa (Charles) Hollins, Newport News, Va.; one aunt, Geraldine Galloway, Newport News, Va.; three brothers-in-law, Thomas (Gladys), Tocoma, Wash., Elder Wilbur (Lottie) Jordan, Thomson, and Walter Jordan, Ha.; five sisters-in-law, Leollie (Rev. David) Elliott, Columbia, S.C., Eula (Rev. Horace) Holloway, St. Petersburg, Fla., Min. Jeanie (George) Sharrock, Newport News, Va., Rev. Alvonia (Charlie) McCoy, Louisville, and Roberta (George) Hatcher, Augusta; and several other relatives.

Colvin Funeral Home, Fayetteville, N.C., was in charge of the arrangements.

Louis Morgan Jr.
Mr. Louis Morgan Jr. of Atlanta died Friday, July 14, 2006.

Mr. Morgan, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of Louis and Lillie Grant Morgan Sr. He moved to Atlanta many years ago and was retired from Atlanta Steel. He is preceded in death by his wife, Elouise Morgan.

Graveside services were July 18 at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer CME Church with the Rev. King Mack officiating.

Survivors include his siblings, Carrie Bell Thomas and Doshia Upkins, Atlanta, Jessie Bell Williams and Elizabeth Davis, Sandersville, and Lillie Mae LaFavor, Buffalo, N.Y.; and several other relatives.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Harold F. Newsome
Mr. Harold F. Newsome, 77, of Harlem died Monday, July 10, 2006, at University Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Newsome, a native of Warren County, was the son of the late Willis Newsome and Ruby Newsome of Thomson. He was the proprietor of Newsome’s Barbershop in Harlem for more than 40 years.

The funeral was July 13 at 10 a.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne McDaniel officiating. Burial was at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Kitchens Newsome; two daughters, Vickie (Ken) Richardson, Harlem, and Mickey Huffman, New Ellenton, S.C.; seven brothers, Willis Newsome, Jay Newsome, Hodges Newsome, Chick Newsome, Edward Newsome, Wallace Newsome and Donald Newsome; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bill Barron, Paschall Price, Hal Keller, Larry Maynard, Len Reeves, Jack Addison, Jimmy Wilcher, Billy Neal, Wayne Higdon and Joe Wheeler.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Pauline Byrd Walden Pittman
Mrs. Pauline Byrd Walden Pittman, 89, of Avera died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Pittman was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, a member of Gleaners Sunday School class and the Pleasant Grove Avera Senior Citizens Group. She was the wife of the late Mr. Talmadge Walden and Eldridge Pittman.

The funeral was July 15 at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Donald Lumpkin and Lester Clark officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, John Charles (Jenene) Walden, Avera, and Ray Edward (Elain) Walden, Augusta; three stepsons, Ronnie (Annette) Pittman, Avera, Warren Pittman, Gibson, and Jimmy (Sara) Pittman, Avera; one stepdaughter, Linda (Mickey) Horton, Waynesboro; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Richard Walden, Keith Walden, Dwain Walden, Reggie Walden, Greg Walden, Scott Walden, Mark Walden and Ryan Walden.

Doris G. Poole
Mrs. Doris G. Poole, 85, of Louisville died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at The Heritage of Old Capitol Nursing Home.

Mrs. Poole was born in Washington County to the late Luther A. Garrett and Dovey Roberson Garrett Stavely. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Cramer Poole.

Graveside services were July 14 at 10 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include two sons, Robert L. “Bob” Poole, Louisville, James Earl “Jim” Poole, Acworth; one brother, Louis Garrett, Annapolis, Md., four grandsons; four step-children; and four great-grandchildren.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Eleanor Barfield Asbell
Mrs. Eleanor Barfield Asbell of North Augusta died Tuesday, May 2, 2006.

Mrs. Asbell, a native of Mitchell, was a lifelong resident of Aiken County. She was retired from Seminole Mills and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church in Graniteville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Zola G. Asbell, and her parents, Samuel Barfield and Lillian Howell Barfield.

The funeral was May 4 at 3:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Napier Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Hulsey officiating. Burial was in Graniteville Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Zora A. NeSmith, North Augusta; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several other relatives.

Pallbearers were Zach NeSmith, Matt NeSmith, Wesley Carter, Gary Gunter, Wade Napier and Scottie Napier.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1899 Central Avenue, Augusta, GA 30905.

Mary Muns Friedman Bellino
Mrs. Mary Muns Friedman Bellino, 62, of North Augusta, S.C., died Monday, May 1, 2006.

Mrs. Bellino, a native of Jackson, S.C., was the daughter of Robert Lee and Fannie Bell Muns. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Steven Edward Friedman and Joseph A. Bellino.

Graveside services were May 4 at 11 a.m. at Westover Memorial Park with Rabbi Robert Klensin officiating.

Survivors include her sister, Barbara and Ralph Neal, Mitchell; her brother, Alton and Susan Muns, Savannah; nieces and nephews, Darryl, Dennis, Alisha, Carol and Robin; and several other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Brentt Moyer, David Alalof, Nathan Jolles, Michael Stallings, Danny Lucas and Ryan Gregory.
