Archibald DeWitte Compton
Mr. Archibald DeWitte Compton, 92, of Lithonia died Saturday, July 15, 2006, at the Heartland Hospice in Conyers.
Mr. Compton was the son of the late W.D. Compton and Archye Speir Compton and was born on the Speir family farm near Wadley. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and was retired from the Math Department at Heritage High School in Conyers. He was a member of Lithonia First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his two wives, Frances Purvis Compton and Frances Gober Compton.
The funeral was July 20 at 1 p.m. at Lithonia First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Renea Slater and Dr. Lawrence Wilson officiating. Burial was at Jackson City Cemetery.
Survivors include two children, Bill Compton and Kaye Compton; stepchildren, Dr. Bill Allen, Jane Irminger and Mary Charles Clere; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Karl Heckard
Mr. Karl Heckard, 70, of Bartow died Monday, July 17, 2006.
Mr. Heckard was a Catholic, a retired pipe fitter and had served in the U.S. Navy.
Memorial services were held July 21 at 6 p.m. at Moxley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Lovejoy officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Heckard; three daughters, Monica (Chris) Robinson, Michelle (Jason) Strickland and Marsha Fehr; two sons, Tony (Cindy) Heckard and Tim Heckard; a brother, Tom Heckard; a sister, Darlene Mallie; and six grandchildren.

Christine Phillips
Mrs. Christine Phillips, 82, of Stapleton died Monday, July 17, 2006, at Athens Regional Medical Center Inc.
Mrs. Phillips was a homemaker and a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church. She is precedeased by her husband George Phillips.
The funeral was July 20 at 4 p.m. at Reedy Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. John Jenkins and Kenneth Jones officiating.
Survivors include two sons, Randy Phillips and A.G. and Joyce Phillips; a daughter, Catherine and Reggie Phillips; two brothers, Louis Thigpen and Melvin Thigpen; one sister, Ellen Wren; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Lester Allen, Jack Terry, Lee Roy Usry, Jimmy Rivers, Dennis Robertson and Marvin Reese.

Donald Eugene Simmons
Mr. Donald Eugene Simmons of Wrens died Monday, July 17, 2006.
Mr. Simmons was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean War.
A memorial service was held July 20 at 2 p.m. at Elliott Sons Funeral Home Lumpkin Road Chapel with the Rev. Bennie Bush officiating. Military honors were accorded by the Ceremonial Detachment of Fort Gordon. He is preceded in death by a son, Cecil Simmons.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Lanette Simmons; sons, Brian and Tammy Simmons and Jeff and Mary Simmons; mother Martha Simmons; brother Marion L. Simmons; and six grandchildren.

William Lee Turner
Mr. William Lee Turner, 79, of Louisville died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at the VA Medical Center in Augusta.
Mr. Turner, a native of Edgefield County, was retired from S&S; Restaurant as a food service manager. He was a WWII Navy veteran.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
Survivors include four sons, Allen Turner, John Gary Turner, Augusta, Joe Daniel Turner, Interlachen, Fla., and Johnny Turner, Evans; two daughters, Gayle Harrison, Louisville, and Gayle Johnson, Mission, Tex.; one brother, Jesse J. Turner, Woodland, Co.; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Elisha Dukes
Mr. Elisha Dukes, 94, died Thursday, May 11, 2006, at Glendale Nursing Home in Wadley.
Mr. Dukes served in the US Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during WWII. He passed through the Panama Canal in to the Pacific on Christmas Day of 1944. His ship was in Tokyo Bay when American Commanders met with Japanese officials to accept their surrender. After discharge from the Navy he returned home and worked in the family dairy, then began work at Lester’s Store in Wadley where he worked for 33 years until his retirement. He was the firstborn of Elisha and Mary Lou Watkins Dukes.
The funeral was May 13 at 2 p.m. at Bethesda Primitive Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a sister, Martha Norris, Wadley; two brothers, John Dukes, Wadley, and Eugene Dukes, Perry; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Margie Peeples Johnson
Mrs. Margie Peeples Johnson, 85, of Wrens died Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Johnson received her education in the Jefferson County School system. She was a member of Stone Springfield AME Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Mitchell Johnson, and her parents Eddie and Alice Evans Peeples.
The funeral will be May 18 at 4 p.m. at Stone Springfield AME Church with the Rev. Thompkins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her son, Eddie Oliphant, Los Angeles, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Otis Newborn Martin
Mr. Otis Newborn Martin, 91, of Louisville died Saturday, May 13, 2006.
Mr. Martin was a member of First Baptist Church of Louisville. He was a member of Louisville Lions Club for 50 years and was a Mason. He was retired from Independent Life and Accidental Insurance Company after 36 years of service. He is preceded in death by his parents, Randall Martin and Lelia Peebles Martin; three brothers, Leon Martin, Roney “Bill” Martin and Oliff Martin; and one sister, Mary Lee Thigpen.
The funeral was May 17 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Louisville with the Rev. Larry Montgomery officiating. Burial was in the Louisville City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Thigpen Martin; son, Randy Von and Phyllis Martin, Thomson; daughter, Jan M. and Terrell Marsh; one sister; Ophelia Logan; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several other relatives.

James A. “Zag” Moore
Mr. James A. “Zag” Moore, 53, of Augusta died Friday, May 12, 2006, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Moore, a life long resident of Augusta, was a graduate of Jackson High School and Orangeburg Technical College. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Beech Island. He was a carpenter, a truck driver and an amateur musician. He was preceded in death by his father, Josh R. Moore.
Graveside services were May 16 at 3 p.m. at Wrens City cemetery with the Rev. Joey Thompson officiating.
Survivors include his mother, Lois Johnson Moore; one sister, Mary Anne Hill, Martinez; two brothers, Randy (Patricia) Moore, Wilmington, N.C., and William Kenny (Patricia) Moore, Little Mountain, S.C.; three nieces; and two nephews.

Keylon C. “K.C.” Powell Jr.
Mr. Keylon C. “K.C.” Powell Jr., 80, of Augusta died Sunday, May 14, 2006, at Portsbridge Hospice.
Mr. Powell, a native of Wrens, lived in Augusta for the past 64 years. He was a member of Mize Memorial United Methodist Church where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent, Vice Chair of the Administrative Board, President of the United Methodist Men and Chair of the Council of Ministries. As a US Navy veteran of WWII he served in the Philippines. He was a member of the American Legion Richmond Post 63, one of the original members of Green Meadows Country Club and a past president of the North Augusta Boating Club. He retired from Doctors & Merchants Credit Bureau. He is preceded in death by his parents, Keylon C. Powell Sr. and Lucille Sheppard Powell, his wife Mary Jones Powell and his wife Alta Grammer Powell.
The funeral was May 16 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Home with the Revs. Fred Heard and C.W. Edwards Jr. officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Survivors include his daughters, Beth and Nick Evans, Augusta, and Kaye and Larry Ward, Martinez; step-daughter, Lynette (Tim) Kelleher, Martinez; step-son, Dwayne (Donna) Wheatley, Martinez; a sister, Ruth P. Lewis H. Wylds
Retired 1st Sgt. Lewis H. Wylds, 80, of Evans died Tuesday, May 9, 2006.
Mr. Wylds, a native of Blythe, lived in the Augusta area most of his life. He was retired after 27 ½ years from the US Army and served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He also retired from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department and Columbia County Magistrate Court. He was a member of Dunn’s Chapel of Leah. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Katherine Wylds Sr.; three brothers and two sisters.
The funeral was May 13 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with the Revs. Henry B. Shaffer Sr. and Marion Jay officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens with full Military Honors.
Survivors include his wife, Wilhemina Bussell Wylds; five daughters, Kathy and Sonny Batchelor, Augusta, Cheryl and Paul Beckworth, Stapleton, Becky and Kinney Harman, Evans, Connie Wylds, Augusta, and Fran and Rev. Henry Shaffer Sr., Vaucluse, S.C.; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Bob Harris
Mr. Bob Harris, 81, of Louisville died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at the Augusta Veterans Association Hospital.
Mr. Harris, a native of Harlem, Ky., had been a resident at the Blue Goose War Veterans Home in Augusta for the past five years. Mr. Harris, PSG/E-7 in the United States Army was a decorated war veteran. He received eight war medals for his commendable service to his country in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He had retired after the Korean War and re-enlisted to participated in the Vietnam War. He served as mayor for the town of Stapleton from 1990 to 1991. He served as a police officer for Wadley, Midville, Wrens and Stapleton before becoming Mayor. He was also a former employee of ThermoKing.
Burial was June 16 at 11 a.m. at the Georgia Veterans Memorial cemetery in Milledgeville with the Rev. Eddie Wiggins of Louisville Church of God officiating. Mr. Harris was buried with full military honors with his immediate family members present. The Honor Guard served as pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanien Sellars Harris; a daughter, Teresa Harris Pate, Augusta; four sons, Rocky Harris and wife Dale, Louisville, Joey Harris, Martinez, Terry Lynn Harris and Kevin Harris, Louisville; three sisters, Peggy, Aiken, S.C., Sophie and Immogene, both of Louisville, Ky.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Madie Meeks
Mrs. Madie Meeks, 101, of Wadley died Thursday, June 15, 2006, at Glendale Nursing Home in Wadley.
Mrs. Meeks, formerly of Emanuel County, had lived in Wadley for the past 78 years. She was retired from the Wadley Shirt Company and attended Kite Church of God.
Graveside services were June 17 at 1 p.m. at the Wadley cemetery with the Rev. Allen Meeks officiating.
Survivors include four daughters, Rosa Reed, Lincolnton, Eloise M. Brightwell, Savannah, Hazel Crist, Shreveport, La., and Jan McArthur, Wadley.
Pallbearers were grandsons Billy Reed, Stevie Reed, Jim Cowart, Travis McArthur, Jamie McArthur, Sean Pierce and Andy Pierce.
