Althea Bond
LOGANVILLE - Nina Althea Hanley Bond, 83, of 3655 Oak Grove Rd., died April 17, 2004 at the Lilburn Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lilburn.

A native of Madison County, she was born April 6, 1921 to the late Horace Lee and Ida Bray Hanley. She was the wife of the late Larry Crawford Bond, was a homemaker and was a member of the Royston Baptist Church.

She is survived by her brother, Wyma Hanley of Comer; sisters, Nadine Royston of Tucker, and Lois David of Royston; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Hanley; and sisters, Lutrell Peeples and Betty Faye Ginn.

The Rev. Byron Greene officiated at the funeral services, held April 20, 2004 at the Pruitt Funeral Home chapel. Burial followed in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the Children’s Health Care of Atlanta Foundation, 1687 Tullie Circle, Atlanta, GA 30329.

Lettie Williams
HARTWELL - Lettie Sanders Williams, 88, of Cade St., Hartwell, died April 15, 2004 at Hartwell Health Care Center in Hartwell.

The daughter of the late Samuel Leland Sanders and Meta Alice Edwards Sanders was born in Hart County on April 30, 1915. She was the wife of the late Jimmy Lester Williams and was a retired educator. She began her teaching career at Sardis School in Hart County, was employed with Hancock County Board of Education as a bookkeeper; and later as a teacher at Sparta High School, librarian at Hancock County Library, and co - owner of Jimmy Williams Insurance Agency. She was a member of UDC, serving in different capacities; and was a member of Madora Garden Club and charter member of DAR, older homes Preservation Society and Cornerstone Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sister, Carol Dunbar of Rock Hill, S.C.; and was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Phillips.

Funeral services were held April 18, 2004 at Cornerstone Baptist Church. The Rev. Terry Meeks officiated. Burial followed in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

Doris Davis Randall
HARTWELL - Doris Davis Randall, 88, of Brown Memorial Convalescent Center, formerly of Roberts St., Lavonia, died April 17, 2004 at Cobb Memorial Hospital.

A native of Franklin County, she was born April 10, 1916 to the late Henry Davis and Carmon Greer Davis, and was the wife of the late John Ed Randall. She was retired from Carwood Manufacturing Company where she was a seamstress and she was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Lavonia.

Survivors include her son and daughter - in - law, Davis and Delores Randall, Hartwell; and grandchildren, Eddie Randall, Ricky Randall, and Tim Randall.

She was preceded in death by her sons, John Eugene Randall and Henry T. Randall; grandson, the Rev. Randy Randall; brothers, Winford Greer, Buford Greer, and Hubert Greer; and sister, Lillian Loftis.

Funeral services were held April 20. 2004 at the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home. Burial followed at Franklin Memorial Gardens - North.

Helen Coile Graham
Comer—Helen Gertrude Coile Graham, 76, of 1347 Winn Lake Road, Comer, died Monday, April 18, 2004 at her home.

Born in Madison County on Nov. 20, 1927 she was the daughter of the late Thomas Goodman and Dezzie Lou Graham Coile. She was the wife of Willie T. Graham, a seamstress and a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Sons and Daughters - in - law Ned and Linda Graham and Larry and Gwen Graham, all of Comer; Daughters and Son - in - law Carolyn Bellew, Jeannie Graham, and Patsy and Don Crowe, all of Comer; Sisters Grace Pierce, Sue Coile and Beria Martin, all of Comer; three grandsons and three granddaughters; three step - grandchildren; seven great - grandchildren and four step - great - grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Ed Coile and four sisters, Eunice Duncan, Lois Bridges, Edna Moon and Minnie Pierce.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at the Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. James Creason and Odis Graham officiating. Burial followed in the Hillcrest cemetery in Bowman..

Benjamin James
Toccoa—Benjamin N. James, 80, of 2551 Prospect Road, Toccoa, passed away at his home Monday, April 19, 2004.

A native of South Georgia, he was born July 22, 1923 to the late Jessie Elard and Bernice Brantley James. He was the husband of Pearline S. James and the step - father of the late Hershel Ragsdale. He was a farmer and a member of the Prospect United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, one step daughter, JoAnn Holcomb of Toccoa; and seven step - grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, April 20, at the Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Grady Cheek
CANON - Grady William Cheek, 84, of Orchard Road, died Monday, April 19, 2004 at the Brown Memorial Convalescent Center in Royston.

Born in Hart County on April 10, 1920, he was the son of the late Burrus and Esther Cunningham Cheek. He was a farmer and founder of The Cheek Peach Orchard and was a member of the Bowersville Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and as a Sunday School teacher.

He served as Emeritus Director of the Federal Land Bank and was also a member of the Bowersville Masonic Lodge #595 and the Hart County Cattle Association. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during WWII.

His first wife, Lorraine Barnett Cheek, preceded him in death. As did brothers Leonard and Alton Cheek and sisters Luna Mae Cawthon and Lillian Mason.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Hill Cheek of Canon; son and daughter - in - law Wayne and Alice Cheek of Canon; daughter and son - inn - law Susan and Jerry Henderson of Bowersville; brothers Charles Cheek of Decatur and Howard Cheek of Clarkesville; and grandchildren Stephanie Cheek Bunner and Jason Cheek.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Bowersville Baptist Church with the Revs. Connie Ivester and Bobby Carson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bowers Memorial Gardens.

Pauline Cheek
ROYSTON - Janie Pauline Cheek, 78, of Cheek - Pulliam Road, Royston, died Monday, April 19, 2004 at Cobb Memorial Hospital, Royston.

Born in Madison County on November 22, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William Harvey and Hilda Elliott Cheek. She was retired from Oxford Manufacturing and was a member of New Bethel Congregational Holiness Church.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Pruitt Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bruce Kesler and Kenneth Vanderford officiating. Burial will follow in the New Bethel Congregational Holiness Church Cemetery.

Max R. Shirley
LAVONIA - Max Reeder Shirley, 79, of 330 Shirley Rd., Shoal Creek Providence community, died April 20, 2004 at his home.

A native of Hart County, he was born Nov. 22, 1924 to the late Lester and Aschia Reeder Shirley. He was the husband of Lucy Buffington Shirley and was a former employee of Yow and McMurry in Lavonia and Whitworth Hatchery where he was a manager. He was a former member of Providence United Methodist Church where he served as a steward, secretary, and on the building committee; and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lavonia, the Zack Daniel Sunday School Class and former Baptist Training Union director and a deacon.

Survivors in addition to his wife include, son, Dr. Steve Max Shirley, Athens; daughter, Sylvia Shirley Brock, Duluth; brothers, Blanton Shirley, Hartwell, and Nathan Shirley, Grayson; grandchildren, Patrick Brock, Katherine Brock, Margaret Shirley, William Shirley, and S. Matthew Shirley.

Funeral services were held April 22, 2004 in the chapel of Hamby Funeral Home in Lavonia. Dr. Larry Finger and the Rev. Richard Bielski officiated. Interment followed in the Providence United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Hubert Ellison officiating at the graveside committal service.

Jewell Carnes
HARTWELL - Jewell Byrum Carnes, 86, of 285 S. Jackson St., died April 21, 2004 at Hart County Hospital in Hartwell.

Born April 16, 1918 in Hart County, she was the daughter of the late John W. Byrum and Dora Carnes Byrum and was the wife of the late Columbus “Dick” Carnes. She was a homemaker and a dietician for Hart County Hospital and was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and the WMU.

She is survived by sons, Marvin Carnes, Hampton, Perry Carnes, Anderson, S.C., and Travis Carnes, Hartwell; daughters, Guynell Scott and Martha Thornton, both of Anderson; sisters, Blanche Dyar and Bonnie Sanford, both of Anderson; 17 grandchildren and 36 great - grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Thelma Seymour; brothers, Odis, Harmon and Frances Byrum; and sisters, Lillie White, Bessie Byrum, and Hailey Hamby.

The Rev. Joe Black and Mr. Douglas Brown officiated at the funeral services, held April 24, 2004, from the Chapel of the Strickland Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Kitchen Fund, 2973 Mt. Olivet Rd., Hartwell, GA 30643 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Lisa Renae Worley
ROYSTON - Miss Lisa Renae Worley, 31, of 736 Ginn’s Pool Rd., died April 18, 2004 at her home.

A native of Franklin County, the homemaker was born Oct. 17, 1972 to Bobby Worley and the late Sandra Rousey Worley.

She is survived by her father, Bobby Worley of Royston; and sons, Daniel and Brandon Worley of Royston. She was preceded in death by her brother Greg Worley.

The Rev. Darvin Cash and Mr. Dale Holcomb officiated at the memorial services, held April 24, 2004 at the Franklin Springs Baptist Church.

E. Vannon Pierce
MARTIN - Evelyn Vannon Pierce, 87, resident of Hart Care Center, formerly of 560 Pleasant Hill Rd., died April 22, 2004 at Hart County Hospital.

Born June 19, 1916 in Stephens County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Madison and Maggie Brown Brock. She was the wife of the late Charley Henry Pierce, who preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 1998. The dedicated homemaker and loving wife, mother and grandmother was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for some 58 years and was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class.

Survivors include her only son, James Henry Pierce, and daughter - in - law Carole, of the Pleasant Hill Community, Martin; and granddaughters, Elva Pierce, her grandmother’s namesake, and Lindsay Yancey.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, the Brock family. Siblings who preceded her in death include brothers, Novis, Grady, Lawrence, Opal, and Coloin Brock; and sisters, Macy Bruce and Ilone Davis.

Services were held April 24, 2004 in the chapel of Hamby Funeral Home. Dr. Billy Owensby officiated. Interment followed in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

Arrangements for Mrs. Pierce were entrusted to Hamby Funeral Home in Lavonia.

Frances Vickery
BOWERSVILLE - Erma Frances Cheek Vickery, 83, of 3560 Bowersville Hwy., died April 22, 2004 at Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.

The Gainesville native was born Nov. 1, 1920 to the late Elihu Cheek and Maude Jane Fleming Cheek. She was the wife of the late John Henry Vickery and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of Flat Shoals Baptist Church, Happy Timers, and the Inspiration Sunday School Class.

Survivors include nieces, Sandra Mason, Bowersville, Ruth Self, Hendersonville, N.C., and Betty Lewis, Martin; nephew, Bobby Jackson, Bowersville; great - nephew, John R. Mason, Bowersville; great nieces, Dorothy Stephens, Lilburn, Kelly Jackson, Kristi Jackson, and Karen Jackson, all of Bowersville. Other nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Bessie C. Gray, Ruth C. Arnold, Tommie C. Couch; and two half sisters, Addie Maefields and Lucille Renfroe.

The Revs. Lee Smith and Bob Self officiated at the funeral services, held April 25, 2004, at Flat Shoals Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park.

Noah Bohannon Sr.
MARTIN - Noah Samuel Bohannon Sr., 65, of 355 Griffin Rd., died April 23, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

The son of the late Clarence and Hassie Smith Bohannon was born in Stephens County on May 7, 1938 and was the husband of Margaret Black Bohannon. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Germany; was retired from Snyder Brothers Company after 37 years of service; and was a member of Welcome Faith Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Vickie Jordan, Augusta; sons and daughters - in - law, Rickey and Barbara Bohannon, Martin, Noah Jr. and Darlene Bohannon, Danielsville, and James Michael and Margaret Bohanon, Lavonia; seven grandchildren; sister, Christine Wiley, Alto; and brothers, Sam Bohannon, Eastanollee, Steve Bohannon, Curtis Bohannon, and George Bohannon, all of Toccoa, Herman Bohannon, Jerry Bohannon, William Bohannon, and Henry Bohannon, all of Martin, and Danny Bohannon, Abbeville, S.C.; father - in - law, Jack Black, Canon; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Roy, Troy, and Thomas Bohannon; and grandchildren, Kristel and Cody Bohannon.

Funeral services were held April 27, 2004 at the Hillcrest Chapel of Acree - Davis Funeral Home. The Revs. Ray Bohannon and Tim Bohannon officiated. Interment followed in Stephens Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by VFW 4346 Honor Guard.
