Tom L. Knight
Thomas Leon 'Tom L.' Knight, age 78, went to be with the Lord on November 2 at Health Care Center, where he had been a patient since September 14, 2001.
Mr. Knight, born May 2, 1924 in Hogansville, was the son of the late Ernest Walter and Effie Susan Powers Knight. Except for six years during the Great Depression, he had lived his entire life in Troup County and had resided at 2485 Cameron Mill Road since 1938. He attended LaGrange High School, where he excelled in athletics and music. Assisted by Coach Oliver Hunnicutt, he tried out successfully for minor league baseball teams in the late 1930s and auditioned as well for vocal recording contracts. As the youngest of four sons, he left school in 1941 to work on the family farm while his brothers served in Europe and the South Pacific during World War II. He later worked briefly as a LaGrange businessman, farmed and raised livestock, and worked in the local textile industry, earning a 25 - year pin for employment with Milliken Carpet Industries. He retired in 1984 but returned to work in 1988 as an agent for Wells Fargo Security Company stationed at LaGrange's Wall Street Journal Plant. The onset of his illness forced his second retirement in October 1995.
Mr. Knight had been a member of Concord Baptist Church since 1949 and assisted in the cutting and milling of timber for construction of the church's Sunday School annex in 1950 and 1951. He possessed a beautiful tenor voice which he loved to use for the glory of the Lord. Until 1996, he sung alone or in partnership with others at numerous area churches. He also sung on local radio ministries and during the 1970s and 1980s conducted his own music ministry at the Troup County Work Camp. He sung in the Concord Baptist Church Choir until becoming homebound in 1998. After admission to Franklin Health Care Center, he enjoyed singing solo at weekly church and music services as well as performing for employees and visitors. Mr. Knight was married July 1, 1957, in Franklin, to Juanita S. Duke Knight.

Knight; sister, Dorothy LeMerle Knight; parents - in - law, L.D. and Hazel E. Duke; and an infant daughter, Shelia Jo Knight.
Mr. Knight suffered from a cruel, devastating disease. It deprived him first of the mobility and vision necessary to pursue the activities he enjoyed and, in his final months, eroded his ability to speak or sing. It is a testament to his personal will, inner strength, and spiritual conviction that he continued to perform solo at religious services, despite the medical need for oxygen, until the day of his death.
