Carol Hammett
Carol Elizabeth Swann Hammett, 48, of 604 Seminole Road died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at her home.
Ms. Hammett, born Aug. 8, 1954, in Troup County, was the daughter of the late Emmett G. and Mary Elizabeth Denney Swann. She lived here all her life, was employed at Pizza Villa on Lafayette Parkway and was a member of Smyrna Holiness Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Brittany Nichole Gumm and Crystal Leigh Williams, both of LaGrange; two sons and a daughter - in - law, Darren Donald Hammett and Timothy and Melissa Smith, all of LaGrange; two sisters and brothers - in - law, Linda and Doug Attaway of Hogansville, and Helen and Gary Rich of Lancing, Tenn.; five brothers and sisters - in - law, Gale Swann, Bill and Leigh Swann and Danny and Jane Daniel, all of LaGrange, Gene and Faye Swann of Chattsworth, and Harold and Jennifer Swann of Roanoke, Ala.; a special cousin, Darlene Kent of LaGrange; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hunter - Allen - Myhand Chapel with the Revs. Wallace Pittman and Mike Powell officiating. Burial will be in Hillview East Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of her brother and sister - in - law, Bill and Leigh Swann, at 131 N. Page St., and will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 7 to 9.

Jeff Costley Jr.
Jeff Costley Jr., 65, of LaGrange died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at West Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Costley, born Oct. 19, 1937, in Troup County, was the son of Eunice Costley and the late Jeff Costley Sr. He had lived here all his life, was a maintenance manager for Twin Cedars Youth Services, was a member of the LaGrange post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his mother, Eunice Costley of LaGrange; four children, Todd Costley of Hogansville, Lisa Hurst of LaGrange, Kelly Henderson of Opelika, Ala., and Brian Costley of Atlanta; a brother, Lamar Costley of LaGrange; and seven grandchildren, Amanda Costley, Tiffany Costley, Danielle Costley, Erika Henderson, Trinity Henderson, Byron Hurst and Brad Hurst.
Memorial service will be at 4 this afternoon at New Community Church in LaGrange with the Revs. David Kegel and Hansel Parmer officiating.
Hunter - Allen - Myhand Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Shannon III
Mr. Joseph K. Shannon III of LaGrange died Saturday January 4, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Shannon, born July 28, 1928, in Charlotte, N.C., was the son of the late Joseph K. Jr. and Amy Tilley Shannon. He retired from Milliken & Company and was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth C. Shannon of LaGrange; two sons and a daughter - in - law, Joseph K. Shannon IV of LaGrange and Matthew K. and Becky Shannon of Richmond, Va., two daughters and sons - in - law, Amy S. and Lt. Col. Robert Cahill of Manassas, Va., and Missy and Steve Garrett of LaGrange; four grandchildren and a great - grandson.
Memorial services will be Tuesday afternoon at 2 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Lori Lowe officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 696. LaGrange, Georgia, 30241 - 0696.

Leonard Yearta
Leonard (Paw) Yearta, 87, of LaGrange died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Twin Fountain Nursing Home.
Mr. Yearta, born June 15, 1915, in Whitesburg, was the son of the late John T. and Emma Yarborough Yearta. He had lived here all his life and was employed as a carpenter.
Survivors include his wife, Ener Knott Yearta; two daughters, Jane Y. Ball of Hogansville, and Mary Emma Morgan of Cleveland; 23 grandchildren, 12 great - grandchildren and two great - great - grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Juanita Proctor; and three sons, Benny Frank Yearta, James Yearta and Dallas Yearta.
Funeral services will be at 2 this afternoon at the Hunter - Allen - Myhand Chapel with the Rev. David Simmons officiating. Burial will be in Louise Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will be at 402 Dallis St.

Bob Leonard
Julian Robert (Bob) Leonard, 50, of Lanett, Ala., formerly of LaGrange, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.
Mr. Leonard, born April 11, 1952, was the son of Al and Mary Gene Leonard. He was employed at the Fields Golf Course in LaGrange.
Survivors include three sons, Rob Leonard and Josh Leonard, both of Newnan, and Rollins Leonard of Lexington, Ky.; a brother, Jim Leonard of Williamsburg Va.; two sisters, Kathy Heyduk of Sugarhill and Kay Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; and his fiance, Carol Helton of Lanett, Ala.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Dunson United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dalton Hammock officiating. a private burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that those desiring make contributions to the American Heart Association in memory of Mr. Leonard.

John Cousins
John Cousins, 64, of 6415 Highway 100 in Meriwether County, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at West Georgia Medical Center.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Oakridge C.M.E. Church at 1640 Forest Road in Greenville with the Rev. M.L. Hardrick, Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the Olive Branch Cemetery.
Thrash and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Elizabeth Grisson
Mrs. Elizabeth Mullins Grisson, 97, of Arlington, Va., died Thursday, Jan. 2. 2003, at Cherry Dale Nursing Home in Arlington.
Local survivors include a daughter, Della Ogletree of LaGrange.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Community Church of God in Arlington, Va.
The wake will precede the services from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Baker and Chinn Funeral Home at 2605 South Shirlington Road in Arlington is in charge of arrangements.

Paula Bunn Thrower
Paula Jean Bunn Thrower, 46, of LaGrange died Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Adairsville.
Born Apr. 17, 1956, in Troup County, Mrs. Thrower was the daughter of Inez Hogan Bunn of Franklin and the late Jimmy Ray Bunn. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and was a member of Wehadkee Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Donnie Thrower of LaGrange; a daughter and son - in - law, Tammy and Jonathan Rogers of Adairsville; two sisters, Susan Kelley of LaGrange and Alice Turner of Franklin; a brother, Mike Bunn of West Point; and two grandchildren, James Rogers and Samantha Rogers, both of Adairsville.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at Wehadkee Baptist Church with the Revs. Olin McClain and Nick Pilgrim officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Paula Thrower Memorial Fund, c/o Wehadkee Baptist Church, 920 Abbottford Road, LaGrange, Georgia, 3 - 240 in memory of Mrs.. Thrower.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 this evening at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville.

Mary E. Bennett
Mary E. Bennett, 83, died Saturday, December 28, 2002.
Survivors include Beulah and Kenneth Harris, Mary Jane and Tommy Finney, Richard Bennett and James Bennett; twelve grandchildren and many great - grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at Beaches Memorial Park 1500 Main St., Atlantic Beach, Fla., at 1 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2003 with the Rev. James Robert Touchton officiating. Guestbook at www.eternityfuneralhome.com.

Mrs. Margaret Owen
Margaret Roecker Owen, 76, a native of Louisville, Ky., and longtime resident of Pikeville, Ky., died Sat., Dec. 21, 2002, at her home in Pikeville, surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late William and Berta Roecker.
Mrs. Owen was an honors graduate of the University of Louisville in 1947. While attending the university, she was a member of the Chi Omega Fraternity and served on the cheerleading squad her senior year. She was also named Outstanding Senior Woman. She earned her Masters Degree in 1975 from Morehead State University.
After graduation, she taught physical education primarily for the Pikeville City School system where she served in this capacity for 16 years. Following, she served 4 years as Pikeville High School librarian before retiring in 1989. Having also served as librarian for the Pikeville Public Library, she was responsible for its renovation after the disastrous flood of 1976.
Mrs. Owen was very active in the Pikeville community. She served as President of the Pikeville Concert Association, President of the PTA and was active as a Girl Scout leader for 10 years. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church, she served as an elder and was also clerk of the session. Until her death, she served as a Sunday School teacher and Church Librarian.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jean R. Owen; a sister, Gertrude Gray of Richmond, Va.; 2 daughters, Deborah Gregory - Dailey and her husband Bernard C. Dailey, of LaGrange, Ga., and Sharon Owen of Louisville, Ky.; 4 granddaughters, Ashley Owen Gregory of Charleston, S.C., Margaret Elizabeth Elliott, Katherine Leigh Elliott, Emily Owen Elliott, all of Louisville; a grandson, Michael Alan Dailey of Crestview, Fl., and a great - grandson, Noah Tyler Breitenstein, of Louisville, Ky.
Memorial services will be held Saturday Jan. 4, at 2:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Pikeville, Ky., with a reception following in the parlor. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Pikeville College, or the University of Louisville.

Sarah J. Bailey
Sarah J. Bailey, 73, of Stone Mountain, died Dec. 28, 2002.
She is survived by sisters, Lucille Frigiola and Juanita Darden, both of LaGrange; brothers, Jesse Jacobs Sr. of Ft. Mill S.C. and Posey Jacobs of Rocky Ford; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Church of the Messiah in Decatur and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Mrs. Bailey will be buried with her husband Master Gunnery Sgt. Ret. William T. Bailey Jr. at Marietta National Cemetery.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephens Lutheran Church, 4664 Covington Hwy. Decatur with Pastor James Capers officiating.
In lieu of flowers make donations to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 66, 30 Covington Rd. Avondale Estates.
Wages & Sons Stone Mountain Chapel in Stone Mountain is in charge of the arrangements.
