Mr. Edgar K. Smith
Mr. Edgar K. Smith, 89, of Newnan, Ga., died July 29, 2003 at Pointe Magnolia Assisted Living following an extended illness.

The family was receiving friends Wednesday evening, July 30 at McKoon Funeral Home.

A funeral will be at graveside today at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Garry Parrish officiating.

A native of Camp Hill, Alabama, he was born Sept. 22, 1913, the eldest son of Annie Kidd and John Clayton Smith. He spent most of his pre-adult years in Madison, Ga., graduating from Madison High School. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1936 and immediately began a lifetime career with the U.S. Department of Army. Beginning as an educational advisor and later as company commander of various Civilian Conservation Corps Camps, that service was followed by service in World War II as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Returning from active duty, he resumed his career as a civilian employee of the Department of Army, with assignments at The Atlanta General Depot; Headquarters Far East Command, Zama, Japan; and Headquarters Communications Zone Europe, located in Orleans, France, serving as training and personnel officer. Returning from his overseas assignments, he completed his career as personnel specialist in the Department of Army Atlanta Field Office, retiring in 1973.

Surviving are his wife, Iris Dye Smith; brothers, John Clayton Smith, Raleigh, N.C., and Wesley Pitts Smith, Camp Hill, AL; niece, Margo Timberlake, Atlanta, GA; and nephews John Clayton Smith Jr., Beaufort, N.C., Michael S. Smith, Columbia, S.C.; and grandniece and nephews, Harrison, Ryan and Katie Erin Smith of Columbus, Ga.

Mr. Weyman Wade
Mr. Weyman Wade of East Point, Ga., died July 26, 2003.

Mr. Wade was retired from Prestolite Battery and is survived by sister, Mrs. Frank (Emma) Collinsworth of Palmetto; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ed and Billie Ruth Wade of Fairburn, Mr. and Mrs. Glen and Jackie Wade of Palmetto; nieces and nephews.

A funeral was Tuesday, July 29 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Parrott Funeral Home. Minister Keith Davenport and Rev. Ralph Bobo officiated. Burial was in Holly Hill.

The family was receiving friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jessie Mildred Shirley Ellis
Mrs. Jessie Mildred Shirley Ellis of Newnan, Ga. died July 29, 2003.

Mrs. Ellis was born October 24, 1929. A beloved mother, grandmother and friend, she was a native of the Grant Park area of Atlanta, Ga. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Shelvia Ellis Sr. She was a member of Sargent Baptist Church for 20 years.

A funeral will be Thursday, July 31, at 11 a.m. at McKoon Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Harry White will officiate. Burial will be in Sargent Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers are Stephen Schafer, Matt Schafer, Chris Schafer, Shane Ellis and Ricky Ellis Jr.

Visitation is today from 6 to 8 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home.

Surviving are four children, Deborah Hale of Newnan, Shelvia Ellis Jr. of Newnan, Richard Ellis Sr. of Newnan and Terry Ellis of Sargent, Ga.; sister, Mrs. Jean Niday of Cordele, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ira Patterson Shepherd Jr.
Mr. Ira Patterson Shepherd Jr., 88, formerly of Newnan, Ga., died Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Newnan Hospital West.

A member of Newnan Presbyterian Church, he was also a member of Coweta Lodge #60 F.&A.M., having served as Past Master and had earned his 50-year pin. Concluding 31 years of service, Mr. Shepherd retired as an agent for Railway Express.

He was born January 14, 1915 in Monticello, Fla., son of the late Ira Patterson Shepherd Sr. and the late Belle (Chapman) Shepherd. His wife, Mary Jackson Shepherd, preceded him in death in 1999.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan (Shepherd) Prosser of Fayetteville, Ga. and Ann Smith of Rockville, MD; son, Ira Patterson Shepherd III of Peachtree City, Ga.; sister, Margaret (Shepherd) Miller of Stark, Fla.; two brothers, Charles Shepherd of Tampa, Fla., and Jack Shepherd of Stark, Fla.; six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening.

A funeral will be at Oak Hill cemetery at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 31 with Dr. Harry Barrow officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Shepherd's memory to the Newnan Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1107, Newnan, Ga. 30264.

Mr. Johnny Bunn, 54, of Senoia, Ga., died July 27, 2003 at Georgia Baptist Medical Center, Warm Springs, Ga.

He was born Sept. 5, 1948 in Meriwether County to Luther G. and Ruby (Dover) Bunn. He was a construction worker with Tinsley Construction Co. and was a lover of the outdoors and an avid deer hunter.

A funeral will be at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel in Newnan Tuesday, July 29 at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Senoia City Cemetery. The Rev. Terry Calhoun is officiating.

Pallbearers are Scott Quick, Greg Miller, Randall Pitts, Allen Ferigon, Corey Mask, Michael Hunnicutt, Billy Quick and Albert Padgett.

Visitation is Monday, July 28, from 7-9 p.m.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Russell Bunn and father, Luther G. Bunn.

Mrs. Christine Byrom, 83, of Senoia, Ga., died July 27, 2003 at Portsbridge Hospice in Riverdale, Ga.

She was born Nov. 9, 1919 in Coweta County to Walter and Jimel (Morris) Adcock, both of whom preceded her in death as did her husband, Everett Byrom. She was a homemaker and member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Senoia. She loved flowers.

A funeral will be at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel in Newnan Tuesday, July 29, at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis Fowler officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Senoia.

Visitation was Monday, July 28, from 6-8 p.m.

Surviving are sons, Jimmy and Dorothy Byrom of Luthersville, Everett Jr. and Brenda Byrom of Senoia, Mercer and Dorothy Byrom of Senoia, Preston and Kathy Byrom of New Iberia, LA; daughters, Shirley and Bobby Hatchett, Janice and Jackson Cannon, Dianne Caldwell, Betty Jo and Doug Lynch, Marsha and Bill Railey, all of Senoia; sister, Mary Wilson of Newnan; 37 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Loette Conger
Mrs. Bernice Loette Thompson Conger, 87, of Woodbury died Monday, July 21, 2003 at Doctor's Hospital in Columbus.

Mrs. Conger was born July 13, 1916 in the Cove, daughter of the late Chart and Hattie Mae Thompson. She was a retired loom fitter from Callaway Mills in Manchester.

Mrs. Conger was a member of Salem Baptist Church in the Raleigh community of Meriwether County, where she was active in Woman's Missionary Union. She also was active in the Manchester Senior Citizens Club.

She was the widow of Clark Conger.

The funeral service was held Thursday, July 24, at Salem Baptist Church. Burial followed at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery near Manchester.

Survivors include daughters, Iris Lonell Pettit of Valley, Ala., Carolyn Sue Fowler of Durand; sons and daughters-in-law, Guerry E. and Myra Smith of Centerville, Don and Jan Smith of Cochran; brother and sister-in-law, Claude and Joyce Thompson of Manchester; sister-in-law, Irene Strickland of Luthersville; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

Mr. Steve L. Orrick, 49, of Hogansville, Ga., died Sunday, July 27, 2003 at the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 30 in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Mike Holdredge and the Rev. Milton Vaughan will officiate, and burial will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens in LaGrange, Ga.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 29.

Mr. Orrick was born Oct. 6, 1953, in LaFayette, Ala. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam and was retired from the Coca-Cola Company in West Point as a routeman. A graduate of Newnan High School, he had lived in LaGrange before making his home in Hogansville in 1999.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Tonya and Cody Robertson; granddaughter, Madisyn Robertson, all of LaGrange; father and step-mother, Marvin and Christine Orrick of Hogansville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Melanie and Russell Lawson of West Point and Kathy and Howard Maxwell of Hogansville; brother, Rodger Orrick of Hogansville; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Bailey Orrick and brother, Randy Cochran.

Mrs. Helen Rowe
Mrs. Helen Hardaway Rowe, 74, of LaGrange died Sunday, July 27, 2003 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Mrs. Rowe was born April 7, 1929 in Greenville, daughter of the late Ira Eugene and Leola Angie Norris Hardaway. She was a graduate of Luthersville High School and received a bachelor of arts degree and masters degree from LaGrange College.

Mrs. Rowe retired from the LaGrange School System in 1992 as a teacher.

Mrs. Rowe was a member of First Baptist Church on the Square in LaGrange where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class, the Burdett Dyar Mission Group, the bereavement committee, the Merrymakers and the Meals of Wheels committee. She was a member of Beta Iota Chapter of Alpha Kappa Sorority and LaGrange Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity.

She worked as a volunteer at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain and with Hospice LaGrange. Mrs. Rowe was a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association and the Troup County Retired Teachers Association.

The funeral service will be held today, July 29, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church on the Square in LaGrange with Dr. Paul R. Baxter, officiating. Interment will follow at Luthersville Cemetery.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Gail Rowe of LaGrange; daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Rick Spencer of LaGrange, Linda and Young Trammell of Conyers, Susan and Dennis Young of Ringgold; brother, Harry Hardaway of Hartwell; sisters, Rose Lee of Lone Oak, Peggy Wilson of Dacula; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Joann Ellison Thompson
Mrs. Joann Ellison Thompson, 52, of Franklin, Ga., was remembered at a funeral Friday, July 25, 2003 at Franklin First Baptist Church.

The Rev. Ronnie Jordan officiated. Music was by Keith Cornelius, Jennifer Ellison and Joyce McLain. Burial was in Franklin City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Scott Turner, Johnny Rich, Robert Thompson, Clyde Smart and Dwayne Smart.

Mrs. Thompson was born Oct. 3, 1950 in Blount County, Ala., to Birtie Mae Compton Ellison and the late Howard Leon Ellison. Prior to her illness she worked as a machine operator in the textiles industry.

She was a loving wife of 33 years to Mr. Willie Huel Thompson and a caring mother, sister, daughter and friend. She was always willing to help others and gave all the credit to the Lord as a faithful member of Franklin First Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, Willie Huel Thompson of Franklin; daughter and son-in-law, Scott and Tina Turner of Carrollton; son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Brooke Thompson of Franklin; four grandchildren; mother, Birtie Mae Compton Ellison; three brothers, Thomas Ellison and L. D. Ellison, both of Boaz, Ala. and Michael Ellison of Snead, Ala.; seven sisters, Sue Martin of Snead, Ala., Dorothy SMart of Boza, Ala., Linda Chumley of Sterling, Alaska, Karen Mosley of Ranger, TX, Theresa Wilson of Gadsden, Ala., Eula Rodriguez of Brownfield, TX, and Laura Coley of Tallapoosa, Ga.; and a number of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mr. Henry Claude Dalrymple, 89, of Newnan, formerly of Roanoke, Alabama, died Sunday, July 27, at his home. A Randolph County native, Mr. Dalrymple was born Nov. 17, 1913 to Will and Nancy Yancy Dalrymple. He was employed at Wehadkee Yarn Mills.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 2 p.m. (Central Time) at the Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel in Roanoke with the Rev. Ridley Parmer officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens in Roanoke with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers will be Dewayne Satterwhite, Richard Laird, Truman Bassett, Jerry Bell, Elton Dalrymple and Winford Moore.

Mr. Mark R. Robertson
Mr. Mark Randall Robertson, 48, of Newnan, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Robertson was born Sept. 17, 1954, in Coweta County. He lived in Coweta most of his life and was a member of Lovejoy United Methodist Church in Newnan. He served as supervisor of the electrical department for the City of Ellaville for three years before returning to Newnan in June and was a former employee of the City of Grantville.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, in the Chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Bob Martin will officiate and burial will be in the Grantville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m., Monday night.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Bowden Robertson of Newnan; three daughters and a son in-law, Leigh Ann and Derwin Ware and Sarah Katherine Robertson, all of Newnan, and Jamie Brooke Robertson of Beckley, W.V.; one son, Bret Randall Robertson of Beckley, W.V.; his parents, John and Carolyn Robertson of Newnan; one sister and brother in-law, Lynn and Mark Macie of Newnan; two brothers and a sister in-law, John and Christie Robertson and Gregory Robertson, also all of Newnan; and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Ruth French
Mrs. Ruth French, 87, of Cumming, Ga., died Wednesday, July 23, 2003.

She had been active in Forsyth County for more than 20 years as a Realtor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius French Sr. and son Julius French Jr.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Cynthia French, Cumming; grandchildren, Terri Morris and Lisa Johnson, Jeffrey and Jennifer French, Candace Mullins, Carl Dodson, Crystal Parker, Carolyn Dodson; sister, Ethel Bruner of Newnan; and other relatives.

A funeral is Friday, July 25 at 1 p.m. at Freedom Tabernacle Church in Cumming, Ga. Rev. Larry French, Rev. Robbie Mathis officiating. The remains will be placed in state at the church at 12:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Union Methodist Cemetery in Buena Vista, Ga. at 6 p.m

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, July 24, from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mr. Fred Thomas
Mr. Fred Thomas, 76, of Newnan, Ga., died Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Newnan Hospital West in Newnan.

He was a member of St. George Catholic Church. He was born in Banning, Ga. Feb. 26, 1927, son of Roy Broughton Thomas and Gertrude Lyles Thomas. He graduated from Newnan High School and attended Perry Business School in LaGrange, Ga.

After being drafted into service in World War II, he served in Italy in the 88th Blue Devils Division of the Army. He served from 1945-1947, and during that time he met General Dwight David Eisenhower during an inspection of his battallion. General Eisenhower asked where he was from, and when Mr. Thomas told him that he was from Georgia, General Eisenhower said "Good quail hunting down there." He married Josephine Sbrugnera from Capriva, Italy on April 9, 1947. He retired from the James River Corporation in the accounting department in 1989. He loved the Braves, baseball, home movies and music. He loved working around his home. His love of family and friends was the most important thing in his life. Most recently he worked part-time at Lowe's.

Surviving are his wife Josephine Thomas; two daughters, Rita (Thomas) Melville and son-in-law Rick Melville of Newnan, and Lindas (Thomas) Cockrill of Marietta, Ga.; sister, Dorothy Huey of Canton, Ga.; brother, Bobby Thomas of Newnan.

The family was receiving friends at the funeral home 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 25. Rosary was held at the funeral home at 7 p.m. following the visitation.

A funeral will be at St. George Catholic Church at 10 a.m. today with Father Jorge Christancho officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. George Catholic Church Building Fund.

Angel Leigh Williams, one-day-old daughter of Jennifer Williams of Luthersville and Derrick Snelson of Woodbury, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at Columbus Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. today at graveside in Luthersville Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Campbell officiating.

In addition to her parents, surviving are grandparents, Pat and Ted Williams of Luthersville, Debra and Eddie Gravley of Woodbury, and Darrell and Susan Williams of Molena; great-grandmothers, Barbara Holcomb of Woodbury and Imogene Nixon of Molena; and great-great-grandmother Ezelle Reynolds of Woodbury.
