James Gober Sr.
July 2, 1921-July 23, 2002
James Ernest Gober Sr. of Dawsonville died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness. He was 81.
Mr. Gober was a native of Coffee County but had lived most of his life in Dawson County. He was a retired poultry farmer and carpenter.
Mr. Gober attended Liberty Baptist Church and Lumpkin Campmeeting. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the 79th Infantry Division in the European Theater and in the Occupational Forces following the end of the war.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Betty T. Gober, Dawsonville; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Dwight Whitmire, Gainesville, Melinda and Phillip Grindle, Cumming; sons, James Gober, Dawsonville, Jarvis Gober, Atlanta; sister, Virginia Cagle, Dawsonville; sisters-in-law, Lois Gober and Ruby Gober, both of Dawsonville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William J. and Eva Taylor, Wingate, N.C.; grandchildren, Elanie and Corey Milford, Jamie and Mark Robertson, William and Trent Grindle; great-granddaughter, Zoie Robertson; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Liberty Baptist Church. The Rev. Terry Cowart, the Rev. Cecil Reeves and the Rev. Edwin “Spud” English officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hannah Lang
Died July 23, 2002
CUMMING – Hannah Lang died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the home of her granddaughter near Baldwin. Mrs. Lang was born
in Amsterdam, Holland, where she met her husband following World War II.
They married
in 1947 and settled in Forsyth County soon after.
During the war, Mrs. Lang was a member of the Dutch Underground and later spent time in a Nazi work camp in Northern Germany from which she escaped. After arriving in Forsyth County,
Mrs. Lang and her husband operated a dairy farm and later Lang Signs. She was a member of Friends of the Library.
She was preceded in death by her husband, H.A. Lang Sr.; son, Adriaan Cornelius Lang; and granddaughter, Megan Ashley Lang.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Isaac Marinus and Deborah Lang, H.A. Jr. “Bud” and Linda Lang, all of Cumming; grandchildren, Emilie and Jason Pritchet, Baldwin, Kevin and Rebecca Lang, Atlanta, Valery and Jeff Hall, Cumming, Nathan Isaac Lang, Cumming; great-grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Pritchet, Joel Isaac Pritchet, Joseph Elijah Pritchet, all of Baldwin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robby and Darlene Tavenier, Cumming, Jan and Ree Tavenier, Cees and Allie Tavenier, Amsterdam, Marsha Tavenier, Cumming; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Billy Hicks, Madison, N.C.; sister-in-law, Mary Ridgely Lang, Edgewood, Md.; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Mars Hill Cemetery

Frank Lyle
March 12, 1930-July 29, 2002
Frank E. Lyle of Dawsonville died Monday, July 29, 2002, at his residence following a sudden illness.
He was 72.
Born in Brookhaven, he had lived in Dawson County for the past seven years having moved here from North Fulton County.
Mr. Lyle was a retired engineer having worked for Boyle-Midway more than 40 years. He was of the Methodist faith. Surviving are his wife, Betty Jo Lyle, Dawsonville; daughters and son-in-law, Myra and Joe Hannon, Cumming, Marsha Dalton, Winder; stepsons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Brenda Jennings, Suwanee, Stanley and Patricia Jennings, Braselton; brother, Marvin Lyle, Pendergrass; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held today, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel, Dawsonville.
The Rev. Sven Mossinger will officiate.
Burial will be in Sawnee View Gardens.

Lillith McDowell

DUNWOODY – Lillith M. McDowell died July 9, 2002, at St. Joseph’s Hospital following a brief illness.
She was 80.
A native of Alabama, Mrs. McDowell lived most of her life in Jacksonville, Fla., before moving to the Atlanta area 11 years ago.
She retired after teaching in the Jacksonville school system more than 30 years.
She was a member of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Boyd McDowell. Surviving are her daughters, Alycia M. Volk, Dawsonville, Lauren M. Gilreath, Covington; brother, Allen McCuffey, Cumming; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Saturday at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jimmy Hood officiated.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Juanita Nalley
Died July 20, 2002
MARIETTA – Juanita Ellenburg Nalley died Saturday,
July 20, 2002. She was 83.
Born in Atlanta, Mrs. Nalley had lived in Marietta since 1931. She was a member of New Georgia Baptist Church in Dallas.
Surviving are her daughters, Yvonne Stover, Dallas, Mary Wallwin, Powder Springs, Rebecca Young, Mableton; sons, N. Alvin Ellenburg Jr., Gainesville, Fla., Chris Nalley, Dallas; sister, Bennie Clackum, Dallas; brother, Hulsey C. Nash, Smyrna; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held July 23 at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home. The Rev. Philip Burt officiated. Burial was in Juno Baptist Church Cemetery
in Dawsonville. The Rev. Lawton Burt officiated.

John Oxford
April 14, 1930-July 28, 2002
Dr. John S. Oxford of Dawsonville died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following a brief illness. He was 72.
Dr. Oxford was a native of Jacksonville, Fla. He lived in Dawson County more than 30 years having moved here from Kansas City, Mo. He was a 1956 graduate of Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa, and was in private practice until his retirement. Dr. Oxford was a principled chiropractor. He was a member of Etowah Lodge No. 222, Free & Accepted Masons, was an avid railroad historian, and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean era.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Waldo and Ruth Oxford; brother, Ralph W. Oxford Jr., and a sister, Frances E. “Betty” O’Brien.
Surviving are his children, John B. Oxford, Kansas City, Mo., Leslie K. High, Blue Springs, Mo., Kevin B. Oxford, Garfield, Ark.; sister, Jo-Ann McMurry, Jacksonville, Fla.; grandsons, John W. Oxford and Michael A. Oxford, both of Garfield, Ark.; devoted friend, Eddie Goswick, Dawsonville. At his request, Dr. Oxford was cremated. A service will be held at a later date.

Gina Whisnant
Feb. 14, 1961-July 23, 2002
Regina “Gina” Whisnant of Dawsonville died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following a sudden illness. She was 41.
Ms. Whisnant lived most of her life in Dawson County. She was a homemaker at the time of her death and was of the Pentecostal faith.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Randall Dennis Castleberry.
Surviving are her sons, Charles Dewayne Whisnant, Gainesville, Preston Chadwick Whisnant, Homer; parents, Leroy and Hazel Castleberry, Suches; sister, Renna Elaine Jordan, Dawsonville; brothers, Ricky Castleberry, Orange Park, Fla., Ronald Castleberry, Dawsonville; granddaughter, Jacqueline Elaine Whisnant; and a number of other relatives.
Funeral services were held Friday at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. LeVon DeLee officiated. Burial was in Dawsonville City Cemetery.

Helen Bearden

Helen S. Bearden of Dawsonville died Friday, July 19, 2002, at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth following a short illness. She was 86. A native of Atlanta, she lived most of her life in Dawson County. Mrs. Bearden worked a number of years as the Dawson County clerk before being elected and serving three years as the Dawson County probate judge after which she worked for the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office. She served several years on the Dawsonville City Council after which she worked as the city clerk before retiring at the age of 80. She was a member of the Dawson County Woman’s Club, served on the Democratic Committee and was a member of the Mary-Helen Club. Mrs. Bearden was preceded in death by her husband, James Andrew “Andy” Bearden; and son, Calvin Bearden. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Drew and Cindy Bearden, Duluth, Jon and Janet Bearden, Dawsonville; grandchildren, Andrew Bearden, Cory Bearden, Jenna Bearden, Lamar Bearden, Cathy Davison; six great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives. Funeral services were held Monday at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Hugh Fields officiated. Burial was in the Dawsonville City Cemetery. John Linn
Sept. 23, 1926-July 19, 2002
John C. Linn of Dawsonville died Friday, July 19, 2002, at Baptist Medical Center in Cumming following a brief illness. He was 75. Born in Manteca, Calif., he lived his early life in rural Sacramento. He had lived in Dawson County for the past nine years, having moved here from Orange County, Calif. An engineer by trade, he was a partner in a sheet metal products company. He and his wife were very active volunteers with the American Red Cross, and he was a member of the Dawsonville Lion’s Club. While in California, he was an active member of the Friend’s Church and the Harbor Chaplin Ministries. After moving to this area, he attended Grace Community Church in Marietta and St. Elizabeth’s in Dahlonega. Mr. Linn was a Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Marcia Linn, Dawsonville; children, Terry Linn, Boston, Deborah Ann Bickett, Washington State, Bonnie Brim, Marietta, Tricia Raze, Windsor, Calif., Brian D. Linn, Dawsonville; brothers, James Linn, Texas , Leo Linn, California; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A memorial service was held Sunday at Bethel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Newt Newton

Winton H. “Newt” Newton of Dawsonville died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness. He was 69. Born in Cobb County, he lived most of his life in North Fulton County before moving to Dawson County 23 years ago. Mr. Newton was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a retired plumber and an avid outdoorsman and Atlanta Braves fan. He was of the Baptist faith and was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Newton. Surviving are his daughters, Elizabeth “Libby” Connor, Dawsonville, Eva Mae Austin, Cumming, Rebecca “Becky” Phillips, Oakwood, Brenda Kay Hyde, Dublin, Victoria “Toby” Newton and Ruby J. Newton, both of Dawsonville; son, Robert “Rusty” Newton, Dawsonville; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bonnelle Patterson

Bonnelle Pirkle Patterson of Dawsonville died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Gold City Nursing Center in Dahlonega following an extended illness. She was 91. Born in Forsyth County, she lived most of her life in Dawson County. Mrs. Patterson retired after teaching 35 years in the Dawson County School System. She was employed a number of years with the Georgia Department of Transportation. Mrs. Patterson was a member of Dawsonville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard W. “Pat” Patterson; parents, Dr. Walter and Minnie Elliott Pirkle; and a brother, Walter B. Pirkle. Surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Lois Pirkle Harben and Ralph E. “Pete” Harben, Dawsonville; niece, Marie Harben Lee, Nashville, Tenn.; nephew, Ernest Harben and his wife, Jan, Tucker; great nieces, Kathryn Lee Davis, Anna Marie Lee Alderson, Jonna Lee Ashwood, Jennifer Harben, Beth Harben, Becky Harben; great-great niece, Meredith Byrd; great-great nephew, R.J. Davis. Funeral services were held Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joel Embry and the Rev. Billy Boggs officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. CUMMING – William L. Patterson died Saturday, July 20, 2002. He was 76. Mr. Patterson retired from Southern Gunite after 35 years of service and continued to work with his son, Russ, at Peachstate Property & Development. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ella Patterson; brothers, Lake Patterson, Glenn Patterson, Clyde Patterson; and half-brothers, Clyde Higdon, Roy Higdon. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Pauline T. Patterson; son and daughter-in-law, Russ and Regina Patterson; son, Ricky Patterson; sisters, Marie Bauen of Ducktown, Tenn., Helen Bailey, Arlene Campbell, Flora Mae Rogers, all of Blue Ridge; brothers, Calvin Patterson of Atlanta; grandsons, David and Scott Patterson. He was 64.

SUCHES – Max Anthony “Tony” Wehunt of Grizzle Creek Road died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was 38.
Mr. Wehunt was a native of Pickens County who had lived in Suches for the past five years.
He was a resident of Dawson County for most of his life.
He was a carpenter and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Dawson County.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Norrell Wehunt, Suches; father, Max Wehunt, Dawsonville; mother and stepfather, Martha and Glenn Bishop, Suches; sons, Dexter Wehunt, Dusty Wehunt, Toby Wehunt, all of Dahlonega; daughters, Erica Burt, Canton, Shauna Lingerfelt, Niki Wehunt, both of Dahlonega; stepchildren, Jody Head, Calhoun, Nicole Head, Dahlonega; sister, Patty Wehunt, College Park; three grandchildren; and several other relatives. Services were held Sunday at Banister Funeral Home with the Rev. Carlton Coker officiating.
Burial followed in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery
in Dawson County.
