Died Oct. 2, 2003

Earl Grant of East Point died October 2, 2003. Grant was born in Dawson County and a was welder with Motor Convey.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gracie Lou Grant.

Survivors include, wife, Mary Court Grant of Peachtree City; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Court Johnson of East Point, Annie Belle Slaton of Dawsonville and Carrie Grant of Sautee; nieces, nephews and dear friends Olen and Ora Jean Gunnin of Fayetteville. Graveside services were held October 6 at the Dawsonville City Cemetery. The Rev. Joey Gilbert presided.

Patrick Johnson

Nov. 21, 1945 - Oct. 5, 2003

Patrick Johnson, 57, of Dawsonville died Sunday October 5, 2003 at Northside Hospital Forsyth following a short illness.

Born in Dekalb County, he had lived in Dawson County for the past 15 years having moved from Duluth. Mr. Johnson was a 1977 graduate of Georgia State University.

He was formerly employed by Whitehead & Associates and was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in the Navel Reserve for 12 years. He also served in the Air National Guard and was a former volunteer with the Dawson County Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Sarah Johnson.

Survivors include, wife, Susan Johnson of Dawsonville; daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Ted Rodriquez of Duluth; sisters, Robin Scocozza of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Alix Johnson of Cumming; grandchildren, Caleb Rodriquez and Erin Rodriquez. Funeral services were held October 7 at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Thomas Smith presided. Interment was held in the Dawsonville Memorial Gardens.

Lelia Elizabeth Davidson

Died Oct. 5, 2003

Lelia Elizabeth “Granny” Davidson, 70, of Ball Ground died Sunday, October 5, 2003.

Survivors include, children, Terry and Judy Wallis of Cumming, Wayne Wallis and Phyllis Lientz of Cumming, Len Wallis of Ballground, Karen and Juny Trent of Dawsonville, Kim Mallory and Rick Nunez of Cumming, Robert and Dot Jones family, Robin Wallis; grandchildren, Randy, Justin, Jerry, Tony, C.J., Brandon, Cheyenne, Patrick and Hannah; 6 great grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Mickey Benge of Marion N.C., Emily and Tony Timms of Duluth, Martha and Sonny Goodson of Cumming, Mattie and Robert Booth of Winder and several other nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 8 at 2 p.m. at the Ingram Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Jonathan Seitz and Sam Morris will preside. Interment will follow in the Sawnee View Memorial Gardens.

Marvin L. ‘Beno’ Ricker

Died Sept. 16, 2003

Marvin L. “Beno” Ricker, 62 years old, of Dawsonville died Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at the V.A. Medical Center in Decatur following an extended illness.

Originally from Wauseon, Ohio, Mr. Ricker was a 1958 graduate of Wauseon High School. He had lived in Dawson County for the past 15 years.

A founding member of the CHAPPED organization of Dawson County, Mr. Ricker was a retired truck driver for Alliance Imaging and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a former member of Hidden Valley Resort in Dawsonville and of Seredlpity Park in Cleveland.

Mr. Ricker is survived by his wife Teri; sons Michael (Edie) or Archbold, Ohio, and Jacob (Robin) of Winder; sisters Mariene Burket of Swanton, Ohio, and Lynnette (Richard) Gearlg of Montpeller, Ohio; brothers Melvin (Cathy) Ricker of Napoleon, Ohio, and Richard (Pam) of Wauseon, Ohio; several grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Walter Ricker, his mother Edith Leininger Ricker, and his brother-in-law Ronald Burket.

L.W. McDonald & Son Funeral Home of Cumming handled cremation. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Silent Unity, 1901 NW Blue Parkway, Unity Village, Mo., 64065-0001.

Herbert W. Roper

Died Nov. 19, 2003

Herbert W. Roper, 57, of Canton, died Wednesday November 19, 2003. Roper, a native of Forsyth County, was a member and long time deacon at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. His father and mother, Weldon and Eunice Roper and father-in-law, Wayne Cox, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife of 37 years, Sara Cox Roper of Canton; children Rodney and Kelly Roper of Dawsonville, Kristi and Jon Howard of Cumming; grandchildren Spencer and Hayden Roper of Dawsonville, Cooper and Jud Howard of Cumming; mother-in-law Nelle Cox of Dawsonville; brother-in-law Joe Lane and Judy Cox of Dawsonville, Joyce and Hugh Smith, Deanna and the Late Jake Mullinax, Judy and Lamar Roper, all of Cumming, Doug and Jane Cox of Dawsonville, Fran and Ralph Gravitt of Cumming, Greg Cox, Anita and Andrew Bearden, all of Dawsonville. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survived. Funeral services were held November 22, 2003 at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. The Revs. Davey Bales, Vernie Worley and David Skinner presided.

William Gene Burnette

Memorial Service

A memorial service for William Gene Burnette will be held on Saturday, November 29 at Grace Community Church, Spanish Wells Road on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Burnette was a former resident of Dawsonville.

Sam W. Carney

May 11, 1916 - Nov. 22, 2003

Sam W. Carney, 87, of Dawsonville died Saturday November 22, 2003 at Grandview Health Care Center in Jasper following a period of declining health.

Born in Lumpkin County, Carney lived most of his life in Dawson County. He was a retired carpenter, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in the Pacific Theater, and was a member of Amicalola Baptist Church. His wife, Delphia Carney, preceded him in death.

Survivors include, son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Peggy Carney of Dawsonville and grandson, Bryan Carney.

Funeral services were held November 24 at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Dave Holbrook and Lawton Burt presided. Interment was held in the Amicalola Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bonnie M. Fortner

Died Nov. 8, 2003

Bonnie M. Fortner, 79 of Dahlonega died Saturday, November 8, 2003 at her residence following an extended illness.

Fortner was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County, was a homemaker and member of Cavender Creek Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Ollie Lance Grizzle and was also preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh V. Fortner and brothers, Dock Grizzle and J.D. Grizzle.

Survivers include daughters and sons-in-laws, Mildred and Albert Vaughters of Dawsonville, Virginia and Neal Gilreath of Cleveland; son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Janie Fortner of Dahlonega; sister, Faye Fortner of Dahlonega; brothers, Hubert Grizzle of Wilmington, N.C., Albert Grizzle of Akron, Ohio, Jerry Grizzle of Dahlonega; grandchildren Mark and Melanie Fortner, Vickie and Roy Belville; six great grandchildren and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held November 11, 2003 at the Cavender Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Dean Bryant, Terry Head, Chris Anderson and Stephen Adams officiating.

Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family requests donations be made to the Cavender Creek Baptist Church Building Fund or Cavender Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 70 Porter Springs Rd., Dahlonega, GA 30533. Banister Funeral Home of Dahlonega handled arrangements.

Larry R. Galloway

Died Nov. 6, 2003

Larry R. Galloway, 60, of Dawsonville died November 6, 2003 at Lanier Park Hospital following an extended illness.

Born in Cherokee County, he lived in Dawson County for 17 years having moved here from Texas . Galloway retired from AT&T after over 25 years of service. His father Holbert Galloway preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughter Tracy Deltac of Marietta; son Randy Galloway of Canton; mother Elizabeth Galloway of Dawsonville; sisters Treena Hancock of Marietta, Sandy Goodwin of Lake Forest, Ill.; brother Mike Galloway of Dawsonville and six grandchildren.

Memorial services were held November 9, 2003 at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Randy Smith officiated. Bearden Funeral handled arrangements.

Jerry “Red” Jenkins

Died Nov. 7, 2003

Jerry “Red” Jenkins, 61, of Dawsonville died November 7, 2003 at Haven House Hospice following an extended illness. Born in Dawson County, Jenkins lived here most of his life. He was a Vietnam Veteran and regularly attended the V.F.W. in Cumming.

He was a member of the Dawsonville Baptist Church. His father, Toy Jenkins sister, Grace Fernback and a brother, Bobby Jenkins, preceded Jenkins in death.

Survivors include former wife and special friend, Nancy Jordan of Cumming; mother Ethel Jenkins of Dawsonville; brothers Jimmy Jenkins of Dawsonville, David Jenkins of Florida and a number of other relatives.

Funeral services were held November 9, 2003 at the Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Wilson Pruitt officiated. Bearden Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Frederick Otey Sr.

Died Nov. 7, 2003

Frederick Otey Sr., 58, of Cumming died November 7, 2003 at his residence following a sudden illness.

A native of Texas , he had lived in this area for the past 17 years. Otey was retired from AT&T, and was a member of the North Georgia Stripper Club, the Communication Workers Association, the Pioneers AT&T, and the Bromerliad Society. Survivors include daughter, Lana Filipponi of Lexington, S.C.; son Fred Otey Jr. of Dayton, Ohio; two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held November 12, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Randy Smith will officiate.

Donald L. Shelton

Died Nov. 6, 2003

Donald L. Shelton, 64 of Forsyth County died Thursday, November 6, 2003, following a brief illness.

Survivors include wife of 38 years, Annett Shelton of Forsyth county; children Tony and Teresa Shelton of Cumming, Tim Shelton of Cumming, Tommy Shelton of Cumming Tonya and Shane Bagwell of Cumming; 13 grandchildren; one great grandchild; brother and sister-in-law Wayne and Pat Shelton of Canton; uncles and aunts Harry and Edna Shelton of Canton, B.R. and Rose Shelton of Cumming; as well as several other relatives survived.

Funeral services were held Sunday November 2, 2003 at the Ingram Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Clyde Boling and Rev. Robbie Mathis officiated. Interment was at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens. Ingram Funeral Home in Cumming handled arrangements.

Kimberly Dawn Hudgins Ward

Died Nov. 5, 2003

Kimberly Dawn Hudgins Ward, 21 of Dawsonville, died November 5, 2003 as the result of an automobile accident.

A native of Rome, Ga., Ward worked at Discovery Point Day Care and was preceded in death by her father, Donnie Hudgins and a son, Conner Ward. She is survived by her husband, Nathan Ward; daughters, Megan and Kalei Ward, all of Dawsonville; mother Ann Redding; sister, Leeann Hudgins and a brother, Bradley Hudgins, all of Duluth

Funeral services were held November 8, 2003 at McDonald and Son Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Joe Redding and John Redding officiating. Interment followed at Peachtree Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Larry Nale, J.D. Nale, Ricky Nale, Bradley Hudgins and Jerry Kilgore.
