J. Jerry Whitlock

TOCCOA, GA -- Mr. James Jerry Whitlock, 61, of 106 Rose Lane, Toccoa, died Sunday, September 28, 2003, at his home.

Born September 2, 1942 in Stephens County, he was a son of the late Rev. James Whitlock and Blanche Bell Whitlock. He was owner and operator of Whitlock Mortuary, Skands Construction, Roselane cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, and Toccoa Casket Company. Mr. Whitlock was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Toccoa Rotary Club, the National and Georgia Funeral Director's Associations. He graduated from Lavonia High School in 1960 and was a 1966 graduate of the John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tennessee where he served as Vice President of his class. He served in the National Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Camp Whitlock of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherri W. and Buddy St. Clair of Toccoa and Susan W. and Kevin Keith of Dalton, GA; a son and daughter-in-law, J. Allen and Tina Whitlock of Toccoa; two granddaughters, Krystle Whitlock and Molly St. Clair; two grandsons, Duncan "Bo" St. Clair and J. Andrew Whitlock; two step-grandsons, Matthew and Marcus Chumley; a sister, Doris Nichols of Toccoa; a brother, Daniel Whitlock of Toccoa; mother-in-law, Hilda B. Camp of Toccoa; stepmother, Louise Whitlock of Toccoa; an uncle, four aunts, several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Friday, October 3, 2003 at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Dr. Roddy Turner and Dr. Henry Fields officiating. Entombment will follow in Roselane cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Employees of Whitlock Mortuary will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be at the mortuary on Wednesday and Thursday.

Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to the church of one's choice or the Stephens County FFA Program.

Whitlock Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Nellie Mae Hitchcock

COMMERCE, GA -- Nellie Mae Freeman Hitchcock, age 93, died Monday, September 29, 2003. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Hitchcock was the daughter of the late George B. and Annie Ginn Freeman. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Hitchcock is preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Gordon and Dorothy Escoe; four brothers, Lee, Frank, Clinton and S.B. Freeman.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003 at 11:00a.m. in the chapel at Brown Funeral Home with the Reverends Dayton Logan and Mike McLemore officiating. Burial will follow in the Danielsville Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include her husband, William Crawford Hitchcock; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ruth and Calvin Smith of Comer, GA; one son and daughter-in-law, William and Nina Hitchcock of Danielsville, GA; one brother, George B."G.B." Freeman of Danielsville, GA; two sisters, Gladys Rowland of Anderson, SC and Callie McLeskey of Hartwell, GA; grandchildren, Renee and Dave Moon of Commerce, GA, Patti and Danny Smith of Cordell, GA, April and Stanley Watson of Danielsville, GA; great grandchildren, Mandy and Michelle Smith, Kendell and Parker Moon, and Adrianna Watson; two step great-grandchildren, Adam and Chris Watson.

Pallbearers will be Stanley Watson, Dave Moon, Danny Smith, Jimmy Bird, Steve Whitington, and Leon Swindell.

The family will receive friends on Wed., October 1, 2003 from 6-8pm at Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville.

Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, are in charge of arrangements.

Pope Webb

ELBERTON, Ga. -- Pope Dalton Webb, 101, of Spring Valley Health Care, formerly of 1548 Athens Highway, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Elbert Memorial Hospital.

Born in Elbert County, he was a member of Doves Creek Baptist Church, a retired farmer, granite worker, and Woodmen Insurance Agent, where he served as president of the Woodmen of the World.

Surviving are daughters, Helen Norman of Elberton, Virginia Oakley of Elberton, Betty Blackmon of Washington, Ga. and Hilna Bond of Elberton; son, Maurice Webb of Cartersville; sisters, Bobbie Harper of Elberton and Mary Dye of Bowman; brother, Billy Webb of Elberton; 32 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was the widower of Martha Thomas "Tommy" Bond Webb and the son of the late Hansel Ayers Webb and Daisey Ayers Webb. He was preceded in death by a son, Vernon Webb; two sisters, Jeanelle Burton and Edna Nash; and brothers, Ronald Webb, Joe Webb and Jack Webb.

Services are at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home by the Revs. Billy Pittman and Jack Findley; burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park.

The family will be at the home of Hilna Bond, 508 Ridgecrest Drive, Elberton and will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Annie Ruth Alewine

HARTWELL, Ga. -- Annie Ruth Peeples Alewine, 76, of 110 Cayuga St., widow of Denver Alewine, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Hartwell Health Care Center.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell.

Catherine Wiley Bolden

BOWMAN, Ga. -- Catherine Wiley Bolden, 61, of 2649 Clark Road died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Elbert Memorial Hospital, Elberton.

Born in Franklin County, she the daughter of the late Mary Simpson Wiley and John Henry Harrison. She was a member of Ellis Chapel C.M.E. Church in Carnesville.

Surviving are widower, the Rev. Truman Bolden; daughters, Latoya Bolden and Kimberly Holloway; sons, Brian Teasley and Ryan Teasley; sisters, Carmar Gibson, Mary Jo Wiley and Rose Means; and brothers, Velmar Wiley and William Wiley.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Ellis Chapel C.M.E. Church, Carnesville by the Rev. Truman Bolden and Keith Ellison, pastor; burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Moss-Stovall-Neal Funeral Home, Toccoa.

Dorothy Barnett Rucker

HARTWELL, Ga. -- Dorothy Barnett Rucker, 59, of 211 Reynold St. died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at her home.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Mack's Funeral Home, Hartwell.

Howard Bartow Hope

June 6, 1914 -- Dec. 3, 2003

LULA, Ga. -- Howard Bartow Hope, 89, of Lula, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Born in Banks County, he was the son of the late George and Maggie Jones Hope. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the South Pacific with Co. a 596th S.A.W. BN during World War II. He was a parts manager at Haynes & Gailey. He was an active member of Hickory Flat United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Sue Garrison Hope; a brother, Clarence E. Hope; and a sister, Fay Garrison.

Surviving are a sister-in-law; nieces; and nephews.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home by Bishop Bevel Jones and the Rev. Jerry Cameron; burial will be in Lula Belton cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Walter W. Slater

Oct. 9, 1942 -- Nov. 29, 2003

LAVONIA, Ga. -- Walter William Slater, 61, of Shawnee, Kan., died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at his home.

Born in Peoria, Ill., he received his bachelor of science degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., and for the past 10 years was an underwriter for Universal Underwriters.

Surviving are widow, Cheryl Whitworth Slater of the home; and a sister, Karen Zweifel of Carlsbad, Calif.

He was the son of Walter K. and Mary M. Yanko Slater.

Graveside services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Lavonia City cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Kansas City Hospice, 1625 W. 92nd St., Kansas City, Mo. 64114.

Amos Family Chapel, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas is in charge of arrangements in Kansas.

Hamby Funeral Home of Lavonia is in charge of local arrangements.

Dorothy Akins

CANON, Ga. -- Dorothy Akins, 70, of 133 Akins Lunsford died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at Cobb Memorial Hospital, Royston.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston.

Eugene Bryant

CARNESVILLE, Ga. -- Eugene Bryant of Decatur, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004.

He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps 712th Bomber Squadron. He was retired from General Motors in 1990.

Surviving are son, Al Bryant of Stockbridge; brother, Ed Bryant of Carnesville; sister, Maisie Beacham of Demorest; and two grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cross Road Baptist Church by the Rev. Grady Jordan. The body will be at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday; burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home.

Eugenia Segars

Sept. 6, 1936 -- Feb. 4, 2004

LAVONIA, Ga. -- Eugenia Smith Segars, 67, of Brown Memorial Convalescent Center, Royston, formerly of Brookwood Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Hart County Hospital in Hartwell.

Born in Cramerton, N.C., she was the daughter of the late George Raymond and Margaret Alda Ballard Smith. She was a seamstress and was a Baptist

She was preceded in death by a sister, Margareet Smith and a granddaughter Samantha Sunshine Segars.

Surviving are daughters, Betty S. King of Somerset, Ky., Cathy Pickens of Fort Mill, Wanda Bickley of Irmo and Myra S Szustak of Spartanburg; sons, Cheyenne Segars and Stanley Segars, both of Lavonia; and 10 grandchildren.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hamby Funeral Home by the Rev. Jeryle Roach. Services of committal and interment will be held Sunday at Amity Baptist Church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery in Denver, N.C. by the Rev. Larry Little. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Family members will be at their respective homes.

The family suggests memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720, or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 672648, Marietta, Ga. 30006.

Jennifer Marie Carnes

Feb. 21, 1951 -- Feb. 5, 2004

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. -- Jennifer Marie "Jenny" Wilkes Carnes, 52, of Clarkesville died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at her home.

Born in Habersham County, she was the daughter of the late Jesse James and Burlia Mae Williams Nations. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are widower, Clarence Carnes of Clarkesville; daughters, Heather Harper of Monroe, and Becken Mae Harrell of Virginia; sons, Ron Johnson of Richmond Ga., and Christopher Farmer of Mississippi; brothers, Buster Hottum and Andy Hottum; sisters, Sylvia Wheeler of Demorest and Olivia Mauney and Ann Wheeler, both of Hiawassee; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home by David Wheeler. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Judy Morris Gunter

Dec. 27, 1951 -- Feb. 6, 2004

HOMER, Ga. -- Judy Morris Gunter, 52, of Homer died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta.

Born in Habersham County, she was a homemaker and a member of Mud Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are widower, Jimmy Gunter of Homer; daughter, Angela Field of Alpharetta; sons, Bradley "Brad" Morris and Chad Gunter, both of Homer; brother, Ronnie Smith of Jonesboro; and two grandsons.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home by the Rev. Terry Rice; burial will be in Level Grove cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Nobie Watt

Dec. 5, 1905 -- Feb. 5, 2004

LAVONIA, Ga. -- Nobie Elizabeth Whitworth Watt, 98, of 804 Whitworth Road died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at her home.

Born in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late John Winston and Pearl Mozelle McCrakin Whitworth. She was the widow of Thomas Melvin Watt. She was retired from Carwood Manufacturing Company in Lavonia after 25 years of service. She was a homemaker and a life-long member of Shoals Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Hugh W. Whitworth.

Surviving are daughter, Winnie Hugh Watt Peltz of the home; sons, Jimmy T. Watt of the home and Johnny Watt of Dahlonega; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hamby Funeral Home by the Revs. Jonathan Ayers and Mike Smith; burial will be in the Shoal Creek Baptist Church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
