April 4, 1927 -- April 8, 2004
TOCCOA, Ga. -- George Thomas Poole, 77, of 645 Branch St. died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Stephens County Hospital.
He was born in Banks County, and had lived most of his life in Stephens County. He was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Marines Corps and was retired from Trogdon Furniture Co. after 38 years of service and later was employed with Toccoa Wood Products for 10 years. He was a member of the Toccoa Creek Baptist Church and attended the Toccoa Church of God. He was a charter member of the Stephens County Historical Society, member and past master of Masonic Lodge 309, member of all the York Rite bodies, member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Atlanta and the Royal Order of Scotland, past prior of the Cherokee Rose Priory, past member of the Yarah Temple, and past patron of the Toccoa Chapel of the Order of Eastern Starr.
He was the son of the late Freeman Wheeler and Verlie Minyard Poole.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Oscar Poole and Buford Poole; and by two sisters, Mae Sellers and Sarah Murray.
Surviving are widow, Ruzelle Simmons Poole of the home; and his daughter, Anita Poole of Marietta.
Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home by the Revs. Wade Bridges and Paul Wright; burial will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens with a masonic rites graveside service performed by Masonic Lodge 309. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Family members will be at the home.
Grady Leon Stratton
ELBERTON, Ga. -- Grady Leon Stratton, Sr., 83, of 1842 Stratton Rd., Elberton, husband of Sara Ayers Stratton died Thursday April 8, 2004 at Elbert Memorial Hospital.
Born in Elbert County, he was a son of the late Omer Grady Stratton and Albina Gaines Stratton. He was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church, a retired Cotton Broker, a member of the Elberton Lions Club, The Retired Officers Association, The Bulldog Club, a member of The Sons of the American Revolution, and a U.S. Air Force Veteran serving in WWII as a Major.
Survivors include wife of the home, Sara Ayers Stratton, two sons and daughters in law Grady Leon Stratton Jr. and Carllene Stratton of Greenville, SC, and three grandchildren Kristen Stratton of Greenville, SC, Alec Stratton of Greenville, SC and Wade Stratton of Griffin, Ga.
He was preceded in death by one grandson Grady Lee Stratton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday April10, at 11AM at New Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Nancy Morgan and Rev. Albert Askew officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery. The family will be at the home 1842 Stratton Rd.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Stratton, Neal Floyd, Herman Clark, Raymond Bass, Pete Taylor, and Stevie Stovall.
Honorary pallbearers will be Elberton Lions Club. The Samual Elbert Chapter of the Sons of The American Revolution, and the N. GA Chapter of The Retired Officers Association.

HARTWEL, Ga. -- Helen Ruth Dockery Carey, 69, of 95 Bannister Drive died Friday, April 9, 2004, at her home.
Born in Hart County, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Maybelle Pilgrim Dockery. She was retired from Hartwell Co. She was a member of Flat Shoals Baptist Church Friendship Sunday school class where she was the class secretary, and was a member of the WMU.
Surviving are widower, James W. Carey of the home; brothers, Howard Dockery of Royston, and Johnny Dockery of Canon; sisters, Connie Johnson of Hartwell, Annie Bell Dudley of Royston, Betty Fields of Canon, and Barbara Maxwell, of Hartwell. She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Dockery.
Services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Strickland Funeral Home by the Revs. Lee Smith, Frank Sailors and James Ginn; entombment will be in Nancy Hart Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

James 'Jim' Lester Grist Jr.

TOCCOA, Ga. -- James Lester "Jim" Grist Jr., 79, of 126 Pine Valley Drive died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Emory University Hospital.
Born in Rabun County, he was the son of the late James Lester Sr. and Fannie Mae Gillespie Grist, and had lived in Stephens County since 1959.
He was an U.S. Army World War II and Korean War Veteran having served as a medic. He was a lab technologist, X-ray technician and hospital administrator of Rabun County Memorial Hospital from 1952-59. He came to Toccoa Clinic Medical Associates in 1959 and served as administrator for 27 years before retiring in 1986. He was a life time member of the Medical Group Management Association and former member of Toccoa Kiwanis Club where he served as treasurer for several years. He was a member of the Toccoa First Baptist Church, the Agoga Bible Class, and former assistant Sunday school director and teacher in the youth department and later served as assistant director of the adult Sunday school department.
Surviving are widow, Jeanette Moore "Jean" Grist of the home; daughters, Terrie G. Harrison of Toccoa, Linda G. Maxwell of Watkinsville, and Dana G. Purcell of Dalton; sister, Martha G. Neville of Rabun Gap; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Hubert G. Grist.
Services are at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Whitlock Mortuary by Drs. Jim Nelson and Henry Fields. Graveside services will follow at Head of Tennessee Baptist Church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery, Dillard, Ga. The body is at the mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

DEWY ROSE, Ga. -- Jeremiah Nicholas "Jeremy" Pless, 17, of 1810 Liberty Church Road died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in Pickens County.
Born in Anderson, he is the son of Rickey M. Pless and Tracy Moore Pless of Dewy Rose. He attended Hart County Schools and Goldmire Christian Academy. He was employed by Faith Fabrications. He was also a member of Goldmine Church of God.
He is survived by his parents, brother, Jason Pless of the home; paternal grandmother, Mornay Pless of Dewy Rose, and the late Coy Pless; maternal grandparents, Larry Moore of Anderson, and Joanne B. Davis and stepgrandfather, Donald Davis of Westminster.
Services are at 3 p.m. Saturday at Strickland Funeral Home by the Rev. Gary Thompson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

ROYSTON, Ga. -- Mark Alton Crowe, 56, of 401 Dovetown Road died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at the Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Born in Burke County, N.C., he was the son of the late the Rev. Coy Isaiah Crowe and the late Sadie Evans Crowe. He was a retired insurance agent. He was a United States Navy veteran having served during Vietnam and Desert Storm. He was presently Master of the Primrose Masonic Lodge in Bowman, and member of the Harrison McCrary V.F.W. Post in Royston and served on the board of directors of the National Association of Laryngectomees.
Surviving are son, Donald Alexander Crowe of Athens; daughter, Margaret Estelle Crowe of Carnesville; and brother, Phil Crowe of Mocksville, N.C.
Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Evangelical Methodist Church by the Revs. Elisha Robertson and Tim Peek; burial will follow in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery with Full Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Family members are at their respective homes.

Ruth Albertson
ELBERTON, Ga. -- Ruth B. Albertson, 84, of Yuma, Ariz., formerly of Petersburg Towers, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Palm View Rehabilitation and Care Center, Yuma, Ariz.
Born in Elberton, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Azalee Wall Barksdale. She was a retired beautician and was a member of the Elberton First Baptist Church.
Surviving are daughter, Marie Milam of Wellton, Ariz.; one grandson; one granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Grubbs; brother, Paul Barksdale; and two sisters, Carolyn Gose and Mary Edwards.
She was the last surviving member of her family.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Forest Hills Memorial Park by the Rev. Steve Fenlon.

Dewey Frank Johnson
ELBERTON, Ga. -- Dewey Frank Johnson, 83, of 1824 Washington Highway died Thursday, June 17, 2004.
Born in Elbert County, he was the son of the late Paul Johnson and Lillie Saxon Johnson. He was a member of Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church as well as a member of Gideons International, Farm Bureau Board, the Elbert County Fire Board, and a deacon and treasurer of the church. He was a former Boy Scout Master, a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII where he retired as a major. He was one of the founding members of Nancy Hart Nursing Home and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 35 years of service.
Surviving are his widow, Alice Peppers Johnson of the home; daughter, Linda J. Burden of Athens; sons, Farnky W. Johnson and David M. Johnson, both of Elberton; sister, Ruby Carder of Thomas; brother, Oscar Johnson of Elberton; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services are at 4 p.m. Sunday at Flatwoods Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Phillip Hart; burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park. The family will be at the home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Berry Funeral Home.

HARTWELL, Ga. -- Hazel Shiflet Foster, 92, of 94 Cade St., formerly of Flat Shoals Community, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at Hartwell Health Care Center.
Born in Hart County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie C. Shiflet and Ethel Cornell Shiflet. She was a homemaker and a member of the Flat Shoals Baptist Church.
Surviving are son, Gary Foster of Hartwell; daughter, Genelle Stewart of Hartwell; brother, Charles Shiflet of Hartwell; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was the widow of John Lester Foster. She was preceded in death by one son, Samuel Lester Foster; brother, Ervin Shiflet; and five sisters, Evelyn Robertson, Opal Cheek, Jean Thompson, Mildred Thornton and Audrey Guest.
Services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Flat Shoals Baptist Church; burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Strickland Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Horace Garrett

DEMOREST, Ga. -- Horace Garrett, 83, of Demorest died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at a private healthcare facility.
Born in Towns County, he was the son of the late Bill and May Phillips Garrett. He was retired from Mount Vernon Mills where he was a card tender for 35 years. He was a gardener and was of the Interdenominational faith. He was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Durden, and one granddaughter, Pamela Garrett Chastain.
Surviving are widow, Callie Nations Garrett; daughters, Laverne Ballew of Alto and Vinetta Hogsed and Refellice Garrett LeMaster, both of Demorest; sons, W.G. Garrett, and Julian Garrett, both of Demorest; brothers, Whelchel Garrett of Blairsville and Billy Garrett of Hiawassee; sisters, Isabell Dill, Elizabeth Mull and Lela Mashburn, all of Hiawassee; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services are at 4 p.m. Friday at McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, by the Revs. Thomas Gragg and Don Coleman; burial will be in Garrett Family cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home where the family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
James Henry Childs
ELBERTON, Ga. -- Mr. James Henry Childs, age 82, of 437 Elm Street, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens.
Born in Elberton, Georgia, he was the son of the late Ed B. Childs and Lillie Mae Thornton Childs. He retired as an advisor and salesman with Childs Brothers where he was co-owner for 35 years.
He was a member of the Elberton First Baptist Church; the V.F.W. Post #5456; the Elks Lodge #1100 and was a Royal Arch Mason, Lodge #25. Mr. Childs served in the US Army during WWII in Austria, New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. During this time he was decorated with many honors including the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. He started the reunion of the 243rd Port Company which is held annually since 1982 and was President Emeritus.
He was preceded in death earlier this year by his wife of 62 years, Mrs. Barbara Mary Rennie Childs.
Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Edna and John Lumpkin of Locust Grove, Virginia; sister-in-law, Imogene Childs of Elberton; a number of adoring nieces and nephews and special friend, Betsy Wigglesworth of Elberton.
Graveside funeral services will be held at noon, Saturday at Elmhurst cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery with Reverend Steve Fenlon officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to service from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. at the funeral home and go in procession to the cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Matt Kantala, Steve Seymour, Rick Prince, Mark Bradford, Van Locke and Scott Locke.
The body is at Hicks Funeral Home pending the service and the family can be contacted at the residence at 437 Elm Street, Elberton.
