Loyd Purcell

WINTERVILLE, Ga. - Loyd Kenneth Purcell, 71, of Winterville, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004.

A native of Carnesville, he was formerly the co-owner of Hairworld in Athens and was a barber for 40 years. He was a member of Winterville Lions Club and Winterville First Baptist Church.

Surviving are widow, Jean H. Purcell; daughter, Paula; and two granddaughters. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Purcell. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Connelly, Lauren and Harold.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East, by the Revs. Lonnie Norris and Jim Mastin; burial followed in Winterville cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery. The family received friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to the Winterville cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery Fund or the Winterville First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Curtis C. White

March 1, 1940 -- Sept. 9, 2004

HARTWELL, Ga. -- Curtis Climmie White, 64, of 1780 Will Bailey Road died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Hart County Hospital.

Born in Hart County, he was retired from Monroe Auto Equipment Co. where he was a welder for 38 years. He was a member of the Price Chapel Church of God, where he served as an usher.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy "Peggy" Allen White; mother, Annie Mae Young White Cobb of Hartwell; son, Ricky C. White of Hartwell; daughters, Martha Robinson and Nancy White, both of Hartwell; brother, Clifford White of Hartwell; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father, Mack C. White; and son, Tony C. White.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home with the Revs. Johnny Stowe and Gettis Allen officiating. Burial will be in the Nancy Hart Memorial Park. The body is at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. The family will be at the residence. Memorials can be made to Price Chapel Church of God Building Fund, 45 Price Chapel Road, Lavonia, Ga. 30553.

Dennis Duncanson

Jan. 19, 1947 -- Sept. 8, 2004

CARNESVILLE, Ga. -- Dennis John Duncanson, 57, of 775 Hayes Road died Wednesday, Sept. 8. 2004, at Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.

Born in Winona, Minn., he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a decorated Vietnam veteran. Before his disability, he owned and operated a pest control service. He was a member of the Hebron Masonic Lodge 564, was an avid hunter and fisherman, had coached Little League football and baseball and had served at a Boy Scout leader. He was a member of the Franklin County Church of Christ.

Surviving are mother, Marguerite Stow of Sapulpa, Okla.; wife, Betty Anne Mormon Duncanson; daughters, Jodi Anne Roney of Cleveland and Emily Anne Duncanson of the home; sons, Dennis Shawn Duncanson of Atlanta, Stephen Robert Duncanson of Douglasville, and Casey John Duncanson of Lavonia; stepsons, Jason Lee Crowe of Oxford and Shawn Wesley Crowe of Monroe; brothers, Larry Duncanson of Soldotna, Alaska, and Rick Duncanson of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; half sister, Donna Lee Duncanson of California; step sister, Lynn Grant of California; and nine grandchildren.

He was first married to the late Doris Kundrat Duncanson. He was preceded in death by brother, Tommy Duncanson; and a grandson.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at B.D. Ginn Memorial Chapel of the Ginn Funeral Home with Erik Griswold, Dr. Tommy Childress, and Roy Neal officiating. Interment will be in Franklin Memorial Gardens. The body is at the funeral home. The family is at the home and will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Grady E. Cawley

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Grady Edward Cawley, of Augusta died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Surviving are wife, Sara Cawley; daughter, Cathy Ferguson of Lowndesville, S.C.; sons, James Allen, Larry E. and Steven Wayne Cawley; stepchildren, Bobby Nault and Loretta Poppel; brother, Eugene Cawley; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery. The family requests no flowers, please. Contributions may be made to Lowndesville Vol. Fire Department, P.O. Box 41, Lowndesville, S.C. 29659 or Pine Grove United Methodist Church, c/o cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery Fund, Lincolnton, Ga. 30817.

Nellie Howard

Aug. 3, 1910 -- Sept. 8, 2004

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Nellie Louise Lynch Howard, 94, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, in Royston.

Born in Wilmington, N.C., she was a member of the First Pentecostal Church in Greenville, N.C.

Surviving are sons, M.J. "Buddy" Howard of Greenville and Thomas R. Howard, of Washington, N.C.; daughters, Betty Jo Bailey and Rachel Sorrow of Franklin Springs and Bonnie Simmerman of Jonesborough, Tenn.; brother, Billy Mack Lynch of Statesville, N.C.; sisters, Mary Adelia Casey and Francis Deans, both of Goldsboro, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of the Rev. Odell T. Howard and a daughter of the late John Samuel and Mary Elizabeth George Lynch. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Annie Lynelle Howard.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Greenville. The burial service will follow at Willowdale cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Goldsboro. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the home of Buddy Howard, 2521 Bells Fork Road, Greenville. Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Pruitt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roy Hamilton

CORNELIA, Ga. -- Roy Hamilton, 71, of 310 Martin Luther King Drive died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at Habersham Medical Center, Demorest.

Born in Cornelia, he was a member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church, a US. Army veteran, and was educated in Cornelia public school.

Surviving are son, James Douglas Hamilton Sr. of Powder Springs; sisters, Victoria Hamilton of Cornelia and Barbara Ann Green of Atlanta; brother, Samuel Hamilton of Virginia; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was the widower of Lucille King Hamilton and a son of the late Willie Louise and Roy Hamilton Sr. He was preceded in death by a son, Andre Hamilton.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Cornelia, with Bishop Earnest Burns officiating. Burial will be in Yonah Memorial Gardens. The body is at Moss-Stovall-Neal Funeral Home in Toccoa.

Dawson Payne

TOCCOA, Ga. - Jim Dawson Payne, 93, of 3989 Prather Bridge Road, died Saturday, Oct 9, 2004 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston.

Florence Lester

ELBERTON, Ga. - Florence Elaine Harvell Lester, 57, of 1732 Ruckersville Circle, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004.

Born in Elbert County, she was a member of Vans Creek Baptist Church and a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Surviving are her mother, Lenolia Rice Harvell of Elberton; son, David Dupree Lester of Elberton; sister, Camelia Owens of Hartwell; brothers, George Harvell Jr. and Ethell Harvell of Dewy Rose; and two grandchildren.

She was the widow of Jerry David Lester and the daughter of the late George Dupree Harvell Sr.

Graveside services are at 3 p.m. Sunday at Vans Creek Baptist Church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery with the Rev. Lyndon Westmoreland officiating. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Berry Funeral Home.

The family is at the home.

Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to Vans Creek Baptist Church cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery Fund, 1715 Ruckersville Circle, Elberton, Ga.

Hoke D. Goss Sr.

MARTIN, Ga. - Hoke Donald Goss Sr., 75, husband of Evelyn Blakely Goss, of Hwy. 17 South, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 at Athens Regional Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Whitlock Mortuary Chapel in Toccoa.

The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church or to the charity of choice in memory of Mr. Goss.

Ichie Dooley

June 4, 1930 - Oct. 3, 2004

TOCCOA, Ga. - Ichie Dooley, 74, of 432 East Iris St., Oxnard, Calif., died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004 in California.

Born in Japan, she lived most of her life in California.

Surviving are widower, Charles R. Dooley Jr. of the home; daughters, Carol Dooley Schwabauer and Doris Dooley, both of California; and five grandchildren.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at James Reardon Funeral Home in Oxnard, Calif.

Jack Morrison

LAVONIA, Ga. - Mr. Joseph Jackson "Jack" Morrison, 76, of 560 Riverbend Rd., Lavonia, died Saturday, October 9, 2004 at his home.

Born on November 16, 2004 in Pickens Co., SC and also lived in McDowell Co. NC, he was the son of the late George J. Morrison and Etta Stancil Morrison Hayes. He attended U.S. Mechanical Machinist School. Jack was retired Owner/Operator of Georgian Cleaners & Co., serving Lavonia, Royston & Carnesville. He was a second generation Dry Cleaner. Jack was an accomplished businessman and entrepreneur. He was a DCT sponsor & advised those interest in his profession. He served on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Association of Dry Cleaners. Jack also served on the Advisory Board of the North Georgia Technical College. He was a fireman and had served as Fire Chief of Lavonia City Fire Department. He was a former member of the Lavonia Lions Club, member and former officer of the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Savannah Valley Rod and Gun Club & Recreation Center. He was a avid antique foreign car enthusiast. He was a member of the Toccoa Elks Club and Lavonia Moose Lodge. Jack was a member and supported Habitat for Humanity of Franklin Co. He was a member of the Lavonia First Presbyterian Church and was a WW II U.S. Merchant Marines veteran and was employed by the U.S. Navy before enlistment.

Survivors include his wife: Rachel Turpin Morrison of the home; three daughters, Cynthia Barrett and her husband Mike of Carnesville, Teresa Vickery and her husband Jimmy of Acworth and Kim Lord of Athens. Three step-children: R. Keith Milford of Duluth, Elizabeth Wiggins of Helen and Rebecca Milford-Floyd of Lavonia. Two sisters: Sandy Monroe and her husband Jim of Holden Beach, NC and Dot Fisher of Marion, NC; four grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James T. Morrison; a son-in-law, Benjamin Hampton Lord, III and a grandson: Benjamin Hampton Lord, IV.

Funeral services will be Monday, October 11 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Hamby Funeral Home with Dr. Larry Finger, Rev. Mike Smith and Rev. Hugh Minor officiating.

Burial will be in the Lavonia City cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery. Former employees of Georgian Cleaners are requested to be honorary pallbearers.

The body is at the Hamby Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening. The family is at the home. Flowers are optional, memorials may be made to the Lavonia First Baptist Church, 95 Bowman St., Lavonia, GA or to the Lavonia First Presbyterian Church, 5610 Vickery St., Lavonia, GA.

The Hamby Funeral Home of Lavonia is in charge of all arrangements for Mr. Jack Morrison.

Loyd Harbert

TOCCOA, Ga. - Mr. Furman Loyd Harbert, 80, of Brookhaven Circle, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004 at his home.

Born June 5, 1924 in Stephens County a son of the late America Lee and James D. Harbert. Mr. Harbert was a former employed of Toccoa Housing Authority and a former partner of C&H Aluminum Products. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Air Force in Guam. He was a member of Rock Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen McCollum Harbert of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Edna and Roger Thomas of Martin, Linda and Donald Ivester of Toccoa and Janet and Kenneth Banks of Commerce; a sons and daughter-in-law, Michael and Deborah Harbert of Eastanollee; a sister, Violet Jackson of Eastanollee; a brother, Fred Harbert of Summerville; a sister-in-law, Willard Harbert of Toccoa; grandchildren are: Bucky and Stephanie Simmons, Tonya Williams, Brent Harbert, all of Toccoa, Courtney Thomas of Martin, Haley and David Banks of Commerce; honorary granddaughter, Lindsey Williams of Toccoa; great-grandchildren are: Daniel Ivester, Kel Thomas, Ashton Simmons, all of Toccoa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Henry Harbert, Lowry Harbert, James Robert Harbert, Clarence Harbert and Johnny Harbert; and 3 sisters, Inez Jones, Annie Lee and Elizabeth Harbert.

Funeral services will be held at three o'clock Sunday at Rock Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Leon Miller and Rev. Harris Pressley officiating and Rev. Sam Bates officiating at the graveside. Burial will follow in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

The family will be at the home and received friends from 3-5 and 7-9 Saturday afternoon and evening.

Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to Rock Creek Baptist Church or Tugalo Baptist Church.

Whitlock Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Ola Belle Scruggs

April 8, 1913 - Oct. 8, 2004

CLAYTON, Ga. - Ola Belle Burrell Scruggs, 91, of Wayah Trail, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004 at Rabun County Memorial Hospital in Clayton.

Born in Rabun County, she was a homemaker and was a member of the Clayton Baptist Church for over 70 years. She was also a member of Joy Sunday school class and a former Georgia leader.

Surviving are sons, Bill Scruggs and Jim Scruggs, both of Clayton; daughters, Shirley Allred of Dillard, Joan Kinzly of Sky Valley, Dorothy Buice of Clayton and Sara Wood of Tiger; brother, Pick Burrell of Clayton; sisters, Mary Shedd and Ruth Childers, both of Clayton; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was the widow of William L. "Bud" Scruggs and the daughter of the late Virgil and Lelia Cannon Burrell.

Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Clayton Baptist Church by the Rev. Mike Campbell and Layman Lloyd Martin; burial will follow in the Clayton cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery. The body is at Hunter Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

The family is at the home on Wayah Trail. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday to lie in state.
