David Ruil Smith

David Ruil Smith died June 2, 2011, in Montgomery, Ala. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother and dedicated soldier. David faithfully served his country as a captain and Airborne Ranger in the United States Army and National Guard.
He is survived by his wife, Marla Rea Smith; daughters Sara Christine Baker (Dan) and Rachel Marie Smith. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Lewis and Shirley Smith of Eatonton; and a brother of Karen Moore (Carlton), Cathy Caviness (David), and Deborah Smith.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 7, at the Main Post Chapel, Ft. Benning, Ga. Burial with military honors followed in the Post cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Wounded Warriors Project, or the Red Cross, Alabama Tornado Relief Fund.

Art Cook

Art Cook, 55, of Eatonton, passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 31, 2011. A memorial service was held Thursday, June 2, at Crossroads Baptist Church with Rev. John McMillian Jr. officiating.
Art was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church and helped with the Timothy House in Talking Rock, Ga. He also attended the University of Georgia. Surviving Art is his wife, Linda Cook of Eatonton; his son Chad Cook of Canton, Ga.; a brother Hal Cook of Kentucky; and three grandchildren, Megan, Zach and Emily Cook.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Crossroads Baptist Church, 106 South Wesley Chapel Road, Eatonton, Ga. 31024 or to the Timothy House, 15 Regeneration Way, Talking Rock, Ga. 31075 in his memory.
Vining Ivy Hill Chapel had charge of the arrangements.

Ollie Mae Dennis

Ollie Mae Dennis of 108 Sunnyland Drive, Eatonton, passed away Monday, May 30, 2011, at Putnam General Hospital.
Ollie Mae was born January 17, 1919 to the late Sarah Johnson and Nelson Johnson. She received her education at the community school located at Mt. Zion Church in Eatonton, Georgia. Ollie Mae served as a teacher for several years as well as a homemaker. She loved to take long rides in the rural areas of Putnam County where she was born and raised, often telling those accompanying the rich history of the locations. She also loved building and working outside. Ollie Mae was a member of Texas A.M.E. Church all her life. She will always be remembered for the strong love she had for her children and grandchildren as well as her family and friends.
In addition to her mother, father, husband, and sons, she was also preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Rosalee Scott. Ollie Mae leaves to mourn her passing, her three sons, Paul Dennis, Sr. (Bearcat), William Richard Dennis, Sr. (Skip), Willie D. Dennis, Sr. (Doug); three daughters, Sarah Stembridge and Janice Butler (Joseph) both of Jersey City, N.J., Mary Dennis, Linda Reid both of Eatonton; two sons, Curtis Dennis (Dee) of Loganville, Henry Johnson (Tanya) of Athens,.; one brother-in-law, Henry of Eatonton; two nieces that she dearly loved, Mrs. Eva Thompkins and Lilly Bell Hargrove both of Eatonton, ; 35 grandchildren, 52great grandchildren; a host of great great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 3, 2011 from Union Baptist Church, Elder Jesse Porter, Pastor, the Rev. Willie C. Jones, Sr. served as officiant and Eulogist. Burial followed in Texas A.M.E. Church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

Timothy Dean Day

Mr. Timothy "Tim" Dean Day of Milledgeville, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011.
He was born on March 22, 1962, in Covington, to Harold Dean Day and Cornelia Dial Day Kitchens. He served our country in the U.S. Marines and was active in the Toys for Tots program in Massachusetts and California. He was the owner of Home Solutions and loved fishing, grilling and always had a smile on his face. Tim was a loving husband, son, father, grandfather and was affectionately called "Papa T" by his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Faye A. Day of Milledgeville; mother, Cornelia Day Kitchens of Oxford; daughter: Kimberly McDonald of Eatonton; brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Kim Day of Oxford; sisters: Sheila Day Benson of Birmingham, Ala., Shona and Mike Fincher of Covington, Tammy and David Hodges of Covington; grandchildren: Ansley McDonald and Andrew McDonald; sisters-in-law: Bonnie and Tony Taylor of Covington, Virginia and Perry Goss of McDonough; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Harold Dean (Boots) Day and step-father John Kitchens.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 4, in the chapel of Wheeler Funeral Home with Rev. Lynn Hollingsworth officiating.

Graciela Waheeda Abdulbaqi (Grace M. Simmons) of 125 Sparta Highway, Eatonton, departed this life Thursday, June 2, 2011, at Putnam General Hospital.
A private service was held Friday, June 3, 2011.

Ruby Ann Lunsford-White

Ruby Ann Lunsford-White passed away Friday, May 27, 2011, after battling prolonged illnesses at Landmark Hospital in Athens, Ga.
Ruby was born in McDonough, Ga., on June 27, 1948, and spent the last six years living in Eatonton to be closer to her family. She was preceded in death by her parents Adrion and Carlene Lunsford and husband Kenneth White. Also her oldest brother Hendley Lunsford and his wife Pansy Lunsford and her beloved nephew who she always said was her "guardian angel" Hendley Lunsford Jr.
Ms. Lunsford-White is survived by two brothers, Ellis Lunsford and Carlton Lunsford (Donna). She also has three daughters who meant the world to her, Candace Ledbetter and husband John Sealey. Roni Butts & husband Ronald, and Jenny Clegg. Ms. Lunsford-White also left behind six grandchildren, Michael Clegg, Megan Ledbetter, Melissa Clegg-McCranie (Brandon), Tara Ledbetter, Adrian Butts and Logan Butts. She is also survived by many nieces and great nieces and her loyal dog Buzz.
Also her "saving grace" and care taker which was also her niece Carla Lunsford. Her grandchildren were everything to her. Ms. Ruby would jam her Rock N' Roll music so loud that it would shake the house and the music could be heard from a mile down the road. Therefore, her grandchildren gave her the nickname "Rock N' Roll Granny."
Ms. Ruby was a kind and generous woman. She would do anything she could to help someone in need. If anyone needed someone to talk to about anything or a shoulder to cry on, Ms. Ruby was the person to go to. In her last moments of life her granddaughter, Tara played her favorite classic rock music for her at her bedside. Ms. Ruby left this world dancing into the gates of heaven and she will truly be missed by all her family and friends. The service was conducted by Pastor Jeff Hegwood at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel on Tuesday, May 31.

Walter Claude “Buddy” Queen

Walter Claude "Buddy" Queen, age 48, of Hillsboro, died Friday, May 27, 2011, at the Coliseum Medical Center in Macon.
Buddy Queen was born in Macon in 1963. His father was the late Johnny Franklin
Queen. He lived in Eatonton for a number of years before moving to Hillsboro in 1988. He attended Hillsboro Baptist Church. Walter loved to sing, fish, watch NASCAR racing and wrestling. Prior to being disabled, Walter worked as a security guard and relief operator for Georgia Pacific. He served as a policeman for Eatonton and Monticello for a number of years.
He is survived by his wife of nine years, Catherine Jeanette King Queen of Hillsboro; children and daughters-in-law, Chris and Joanie Queen of Milledgeville, Christina Beveridge of Hillsboro, and Brian and Jennifer Beveridge of Eatonton; granddaughter, Kirsten Queen; mother, Fay Fuller Cooke of Eatonton; mother-in-law, Ruby King Johnson of Hillsboro; brother and sister-in-law, Wyman and Linda Foskey of Eatonton; three uncles, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 31, at Hillsboro Baptist Church in Hillsboro. Burial was held in Fullerton Memorial Gardens in Hillsboro. Rev. John McDuffie and Rev. Wills Davis officiated.
Serving as pallbearers were Travis Brinson, Brian Brooks, Hal Dent, Randy Greenway, Kenny Hodges, Jim Hooks, and Paul Kitchens. Honorary pallbearers were Glen Johnson and Rob Keith.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Walter Queen Burial Fund, c/o Jordan Funeral Home, P.O. Box 46, Monticello, Georgia 31064.

JoAnne Wright

Mrs. JoAnne Wright of Eatonton passed away Monday, May 30, 2011. Funeral Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Williams Funeral Home of Eatonton with the Rev. Randy King officiating.
Mrs. Wright was a native of Rockdale County having moved to Eatonton in 1960. She was the daughter of the late James Irving and Montine Slaton Dix. She was a nanny to a lot of children and loved flowers and gardening. She was a member of Christ's Glory Church.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Wright of Eatonton; daughters, Jane Mize and Angela (Ernie) Davis; a son, Rick (Frances) Mize; grandchildren, April (Bruce) Johnson, Jennifer (Brian) Beverage, Stashia (Bryan) Arthur, Kimberly Davis, and Ernie Davis, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Levi, Landon, Braxton, Lily Grace, and London.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made to Christ's Glory Church; 1093 Lake Oconee Parkway, Eatonton, GA 31024.

Maurice Vincent Lane Sr.

Maurice Vincent Lane Sr., 90 died Saturday, May 14, 2011. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at Liberty Chapel Church in Eatonton. Pastor Mike Willard will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following in the church center.
Mr. Lane was born in Ansonia, Conn., the son of Maurice Patrick Lane and Susan Koch Lane. Mr. Lane attended Georgia Military College transferring to the University of Georgia where he received a bachelor of science in geology. He completed a masters in geology from Pennsylvania State University. Mr. Lane served in the Merchant Marines and enlisted in Army Air Force during World War II. Thereafter he did some mapping of the Northwest Territories in Canada.
For the next five years he worked for Standard Oil of New Jersey in Talara, Peru and Bogota, Colombia. Later he moved to Salvador Bahia, Brazil where he was employed by Petrobras as one of their leading geologist for oil exploration. There he formed his own consulting and exploratory geology firm to look for minerals and water throughout the interior and Amazon Basin of Brazil. Mr. Lane was particularly proud of being elected president of the American Chamber of Commerce for state of Bahia, Brazil.
Mr. Lane loved to play golf. He traveled extensively with his family throughout Central and South America. Mr. Lane had many friends that were scattered all over the world.
Mr. Lane's wife, Edna Davis Lane, preceded him in death five years earlier. He was married for over sixty years. He is survived by his son, Vince Lane of Payson, Arizona; a daughter, Melinda Lane Willingham (Broadus) of Macon; three grandchildren, Amy Angell Willingham of Anchorage, Alaska; Kassandra Willingham Kellett (Jordan) of Atlanta; and Broadus Willingham V of Charleston, S. C.; two sisters; Peggy lane Butts of Newington, Connecticut, and Dorrie Lane Czarra of Bethesda, Md; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Liberty Chapel Church, P.O. Box 3296, Eatonton, Georgia 31024 or to the donor's favorite charity.

George Brown Jr.

George Brown Jr. passed from this life May 17, 2011. Mr. Brown was born December 22, 1922, in Thomaston, Ga., to the late Pierce and Bertha Russell Brown.
He received his education in Thomaston, and later in Eatonton public schools. He left Putnam County in the late 1950s and returned in 2000. He joined Greater Bells Chapel.
The mother of his children, Nona Mae Parks, one sister, Geneva Riley; and three brothers, Ernest Brown, Clifford Brown and Charles Brown, all preceded him in death.
On Tuesday, May 17, 2011, God called him home. He leaves to mourn a devoted companion, Sherry Gullatt; eight sons, Willie James Brown (Krista), George Brown Jr. of Thomson, GA, Tommy Lee Brown of Eatonton, Wesley Fluellen, Shane Burns, Walter Fluellen, George Parks Jr. of Savannah, and Charles S. Brown of Atlanta; four daughters, Latisha Fluellen, Dorothy Mae Brown of Eatonton, Jackie Fluellen, Willette Brown; three sisters, Pearlie Mae Little, Elise Jones, both of Eatonton, Doris Scott Bailey of Decatur; four brothers, Ernest, Lenza, George and James Scott, all of Decatur; a devoted friend, Pat Buckner; 22 grandchildren, Yvette Clements (Ricky), Linda Parks (Terry), Carolyn Farley, Shawanda Crutchfield (David), Rafeal Brown (Tiffany), Jason, Jessica, Dennis, Angel, Kayla, Malik, Tyrell, Tommy, Elanda, William, Shirley, Anthony, Kaylia, Keontay, Kamar, Kobi Brown; 28 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren; nephews, Ernest Brown, Jr., and Michael Brown both of Miami, Fla., James Brown (Stella), Michael Bishop (Flora) of Decatur, and Johnny Bishop, Sr. (Tracy) of Athens; nieces, Linda B. Roquemore of Macon, and Merle Smith of Lithonia; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 21, 2011, at The Greater Bell's Chapel Baptist Church. The Rev. Gregory Ellison, Pastor, officiated. Burial followed in Eastside Eatonton City cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

John Peck Jr.

On May 7, 2011, a memorial service celebration was held for John Peck, Jr. He was eulolgized by his grandsons and daughter and a Masonic Memorial was held. John passed away on May 1, 2011, after an extended illness.
John was the only child of John Walter Peck and Laura Victoria Thomas Peck. He was raised in Marion, Ala., on the farm of his grandparents, George W. and Martha Miree Thomas. He attended the Perry County School System and graduated from Marion Military High School. Before a short service in the United States Navy, he attended the University of Alabama.
In 1940, John's father built the movie theatre in Eatonton, GA and ran it until his death in 1950. At this time, John was 23 years of age. He then moved to Eatonton because he inherited the theater from his father. John ran the theatre until the 1990's when he transformed the building into rental office space. In the early years of 2000, he sold the building, ending his association with the reason for coming to Eatonton.
On December 23, 1951, John married Mary Elizabeth Cone, forming a 59 year marriage. From this marriage, one child was born, Susan Victoria. They all are members of the Eatonton First United Methodist Church.
While operating the movie theatre, John attended and graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS degree in accounting in 1961. He first worked for the J.P. Stevens textile company and then McGaw Laboratories as an accountant before retiring with 15 years employment with the State of Georgia Revenue Sales Tax Division.
John was ever interested in his Eatonton community. Upon moving to Eatonton, he quickly joined the local Kiwanis Club and Masonic Order. He actively served both of these organizations for 60 years. Just before his death, he and two other local Masonic Brothers, Roy Vining, Jr. and Jack Rossee, were proudly honored by their Rising Star #4 Masonic Lodge for their 60 years of service.
John leaves his wife, Mary Elizabeth Cone Peck, daughter Susan Peck Park, grandson Sy Park and wife Aimee, grandson J. Park and two great-grandsons, Ace and James Park. John is preceded in death by his son-in-law, Richard S. Park, Jr.
