Mrs. Rosa McGruder

Mrs. Rosa Bell McGruder, 82, of 2243 Rosier Road, Apt. 18-E, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at her residence.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Clyde Hill officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mrs. McGruder, a native of Burke County, Ga., was a homemaker.

Her family said she was a caring and loving person who gave to others unconditionally. She was loved by all and will be truly missed.

Survivors include four sons, John T. McGruder Jr., Jamaica, N.Y., Walter McGruder, Dallas, Henry McGruder, Capitol Heights, Md., and Leon McGruder, Arverne, N.Y.; three daughters, Mary McGruder and Betty McGruder-Howard, both of Augusta, and Florence McGruder, Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Mears Chance, Waynesboro, Ga.; five sisters, Mattie Burns, Bronx, N.Y., Ruby Brown, New York, Willie Mae Howard, Augusta, Lulu Wilson, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Oridene Ruffin, Sylvania; and 14 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be sons and grandsons.

Friends may call at the residence or at Dent's Undertaking Establishment.

Ms. Elizabeth McKettrick

Homemaker

Ms. Elizabeth McKettrick, 63, of 2418 Southgate Drive, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998.

A memorial service will be held at a later time.

Ms. McKettrick, a native of Augusta, was a homemaker.

Her family said she was the very best mother and grandmother anyone could ever ask for. She was very special and very caring toward everyone.

Survivors include three daughters, Judy Lee Corley, Alabama, Tina McKettrick-Dasher, Hephzibah, and Robin Lee McKettrick, Augusta; a brother, Pedro Williams, North Augusta; a sister, Peggy Sims, Vidalia, Ga.; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 246 Davis Road, Augusta, GA 30907.

Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Telfair Street, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Eleanor McNair

Homemaker

Mrs. Eleanor T. McNair, 86, of 2404 Hiawassee Road, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Columbia Augusta Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at The Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Wofford B. Caughman Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. McNair, a native of Griffin, Ga., had lived in Augusta since 1967. She was a homemaker and a member of the Business and Professional Women's Clubs Inc. She was a member of The Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Gleaners and the Seed Sowers Bible Class.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynell M. Widener, Evans; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John Mullins, Tommy Padgett, Jim Youngblood, Charles Gibson, Grady Jenkins and David Widener.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Youngblood Bible Class, and Gleaners and the Seed Sowers Bible Class of The Hill Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to The Hill Baptist Church Vision, 2165 Kings Way, Augusta, GA 30904.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Platt's Funeral Home, Crawford Avenue.

Mrs. Evelyn Mobley

Housekeeper

WAYNESBORO, Ga. -- Mrs. Evelyn Stewart Mobley, 56, of 113 Legion Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at University Hospital, Augusta.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at DeLoach Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Paradise officiating. Burial will be in Burke Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Mobley, a native of Burke County, was a housekeeper for Samson Manufacturing Co. and a member of Nazarene Church of Wrens.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Dale Mobley, North Augusta, and Joey Lewis Mobley, Waynesboro; her mother, Elizabeth Huff, Stapleton; three brothers, Lester L. Stewart, Martinez, Lonnie F. Stewart, Wrens, and Terry Stewart, Augusta; three sisters, Geraldine Snipes and Sarah Snipes, both of Hephzibah, and Barbara Prescott, Matthews; and one grandchild.

Pallbearers will be George Snipes, Rodney Snipes, James Snipes, Ben Snipes, Lonnie Quick and Iso Holmes.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Essie Oglesby

Homemaker

Mrs. Essie Mae Oglesby, 97, of 2904 Old Louisville Road, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at her residence.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bay Branch Baptist Church cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Sylvania, Ga., with Chaplain Wayne Bruner officiating.

Mrs. Oglesby, a native of Jenkins County, Ga., was a homemaker and a member of Bay Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Mitchell Oglesby and Billy Oglesby, both of Augusta, and Jack Oglesby, Mobile, Ala.; three daughters, Ruby Melton and Joyce Quick, both of Augusta, and Charlotte Walsh, Sacramento, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, GA 30904.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road.

Mr. Barry Pierce

Retired sales executive

NORTH AUGUSTA -- Mr. Barry Pierce, 62, of 7 Fox Creek Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, in Augusta.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church with Drs. John Younginer and Jim Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Pineview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Pierce, a native of Englewood, Tenn., had lived in North Augusta for 40 years. He had retired from Merke, Sharp and Dohme Pharmaceutical Co. as a sales executive. He was a founding member of the North Augusta Sertoma Club and the North Augusta Cotillion. He was a past president of the North Augusta Junior Chamber of Commerce, a former North Augusta Jaycee of the Year and one of the 1966 Outstanding Young Men of America. He was a little league football coach and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Harman Pierce; three daughters, Karen Pierce Peters, Aiken, Laurie Pierce Douglas, Athens, Ga., and Angela Pierce Milligan, Augusta; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Louie Wanninger, John Gibbs, Loyd McNair, Bob Thiede, Max Beal, Jim Rogers, Scott Miller, Toby Clemons, Donald Metz and Jerry Hart.

Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 639 Georgia Ave., North Augusta, SC 29841.

Mrs. Jessie Ramsey

Mrs. Jessie Mae Ramsey, 90, of 2436 Lawton St., died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Lincolnton, Ga., with the Rev. Robert Crawford officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

Mrs. Ramsey, a native of Lincolnton, was a homemaker and a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Julian A. Curry, East Orange, N.J.; and a sister, Beulah Beard.

Pallbearers will be friends and relatives.

Friends may call at the residence or after 3 p.m. today at C.A. Reid Sr. Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bessie Smallwood

Mrs. Bessie Davis Smallwood, 93, of 205 Weldon Road, Martinez, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, in Augusta.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Platt's Funeral Home, Crawford Avenue, with Dr. William L. Owens officiating. Burial will be in Westover Memorial Park.

Mrs. Smallwood, a native of Jefferson County, Ga., was a homemaker and a member of Crawford Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Conner, Martinez; a sister, Annie Wren, North Augusta; and six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Norman Smith

Educator

Mr. Norman Carlos Smith, 87, of 703 Bransford Road, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at Windermere Nursing Home.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Curtis Baptist Church with Dr. John Bryan and the Rev. Sherrell Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Westover Memorial Park.

Mr. Smith, a native of Livermore, Ky., was a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology. He taught at Georgia Tech, Truett-McConnell College, Cleveland, Ga., Augusta College, Academy of Richmond County High School, Tubman Junior High School, Curtis Baptist High School and Waycross Technical School.

He was a training director for Bell Aircraft Corp., Marietta, Ga., and a custom home designer and builder. He was president of Norman C. Smith Construction Co. Inc. and a member of the Rotary Club of Augusta.

Mr. Smith was a member, deacon, trustee, and Sunday school teacher and superintendent of Curtis Baptist Church. He was a founder of Curtis Baptist Schools and a charter member of Roswell Street Baptist Church, Atlanta.

Survivors include a son, Alan C. Smith, Martinez; a daughter, Dianne Smith Barton, Lincolnton, Ga.; two sisters, Virginia Smith Jones, Cumming, Ga., and Mildred Smith Holland, East Point, Ga.; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Melvin Douglas Barton Jr., Eric Spires, Michael G. Barton, Douglas Beasley, Matthew B. Barton, Daniel D. Smith, Timothy E. Smith and Kameron G.A. Waters.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Curtis Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Curtis Baptist Church, 1326 Broad St., Augusta, GA 30901.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Platt's Funeral Home, Crawford Avenue.
