Mrs. Ruth Bessman

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Mrs. Ruth E. Bessman, 80, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, Augusta, with the Rev. Allan McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Augusta.

Mrs. Bessman, a native of Augusta, was retired from St. Joseph Hospital as assistant manager of the hospitality shop. She was a member of Church of the Most Holy Trinity and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3200.

Survivors include two sons, John W. Bessman Jr., Reston, Va., and James A. Bessman, Martinez; seven daughters, Jacqueline Bessman and Teresa Patterson, both of Green Cove Springs, Patricia Lyons, Orlando, Ruth DeLaGarza, Atlanta, Mary Vignati, Augusta, Margaret Keels, Manning, S.C., and Katherine Sluder, Asheville, N.C.; one brother, Henry Redd, Fort Walton Beach; one sister, Muriel Carpenter, North Augusta; and 29 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren

Memorials may be made to Church of the Most Holy Trinity Restoration Fund, 720 Telfair St., Augusta, GA 30901.

Friends may call at the residence of Mary Vignati, 2808 Walton Way, Augusta.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Poteet Funeral Home, Greene Street.

Mr. Lawrence Bailey

Retired machinist

AIKEN -- Mr. Lawrence W. Bailey, 71, of 210 Hudson Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.

The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Valley Fair Baptist Church, Graniteville, with the Rev. Ronald Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Young Zion Hill Baptist Church.

Mr. Bailey, a native of Wininga, Va., was a retired machinist with Cornell Manufacturing Co., Orangeburg, N.Y., and a member of Valley Fair Baptist Church. He served in the Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Bailey; two sons, Michael Bailey, Yonkers, N.Y., and Reginald Bailey, Albany, N.Y.; three foster sons, Gasnell O. Sanders, Darious Sanders and Nijev Walker, all of Aiken; two foster daughters, Missy Charkeena Sanders and Bianca Walker, both of Aiken; one brother, Aubrey Bailey, Orangeburg, S.C.; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild

Friends may call at the residence, at 2 p.m. today at Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home or at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Valley Fair Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at New Beginning Baptist Church.

Mrs. Margaret Arthur

Personnel manager

Mrs. Margaret Malfroid Arthur, 57, of 180 Stone Mill Drive, Martinez, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at University Hospital.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Platt's Funeral Home, North Belair Road, with the Rev. J. Andrew Menger officiating. Burial will be in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Mrs. Arthur, a native of Grand Rapids, was a personnel manager with Vanity Fair.

Survivors include her husband, Barry M. Arthur; one son, Michael Arthur, Atlanta; one daughter, Vickie Duncan, Orange Park, Fla.; three sisters, Betty Bynum, Caledonia, Mich., and Lynn Berry and Joyce Christopher, both of Grand Rapids; and two grandchildren

Memorials may be made to God's Love Mission, Safe Haven for Women and Children.

Mrs. Brenda Amos

Homemaker

Mrs. Brenda Walker Amos, 48, of 108 E. Chapman St., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at her residence.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at C.A. Reid Sr. Memorial Funeral Home, with the Rev. Willie White officiating. Burial will be in Walker Memorial cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mrs. Amos, a native of Augusta, was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Jamieson Jabari Amos; two brothers, George Walker Jr. and Willie Albert Fludd, both of Augusta; and three sisters, Betty Johnson, Edwina Johnson and Ada Bell Faulks, all of Augusta

Friends may call at the residence or C.A. Reid Sr. Memorial Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mary Alexander

Homemaker

MCCORMICK, S.C. -- Mrs. Mary Louise Alexander, 71, of 610 E. Gold St., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Isaac Barnwell, R. Haskell, Willie Harmon and James Rouse officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

Mrs. Alexander, a native of McCormick, was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, George Alexander; five sons, John Louis Thompkins, James Alphonse Thompkins, George Vincent Alexander and Jerome Kennedy Alexander, all of Detroit, and George Emmett Alexander, Seffner, Fla.; three brothers, Johnnie B. Scott, Detroit, and Archie L. Scott and Jesse Scott, Cincinnati; four sisters, Ivory Leverette, Lincolnton, Ga., Alice Crawford, McCormick, Minnie Ella Settles, North Augusta, and Leila Ealy, Indianapolis; and 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.< > Pallbearers will be Al Crawford, Calvin Settles, Timothy Crawford, Paul Leverette, Paul Pratt and Thales Parker.

Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews.

Friends may call at the residence.

The family will receive friends until 1 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home.

Mr. Bobby H. Barton Sr.

Former state official

Mr. Bobby H. Barton Sr., a former assistant attorney general of Georgia, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at Columbia Augusta Medical Center. He was 72.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Poteet Funeral Home, Wheeler Road, with the Rev. Robert L. Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Westover Memorial Park.

Mr. Barton, a native of Augusta, served as assistant attorney general from 1956 to 1960 and had been an attorney since 1949, when he graduated from Augusta Law School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, in which he served as a tank commander in the 3rd Armored Division in the European theater. He received the Silver Star, Purple Heart and five battle stars. He was a graduate of the Academy of Richmond County. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3200 and Georgia Trial Lawyers Association.

Survivors include one son, Bobby H. Barton Jr., Martinez; one daughter, Linda B. Hann, Augusta; his mother, Irene Widener Barton, St. Simons Island; one brother, Giles Barton, Augusta; one sister, Mary Hitt, St. Simons Island; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be William Hitt Jr., Mark Hitt, David Hitt, Michael Hitt, Arthur Robinson and David Hann.

Friends may call at 753 Old Stevens Creek Road, Martinez.

Mrs. Marian Brant

Retired nurse

SYLVANIA, Ga. -- Mrs. Marian Brewer Brant, 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Memorial Medical Center, Savannah.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home with the Revs. John Eckert and Karen Zeigler officiating. Burial will be in Screven County Memorial cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mrs. Brant, a native of Philadelphia, was a retired nurse with Screven County Hospital and served with the Army Nurse Corp during World War II. She was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and a member of Sylvania First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, John Dolphus Brant, Estill, S.C.; one daughter, Nancy Brant Long, North Charleston, S.C.; three brothers, James Edward Brewer Jr., State College, Pa., Thomas Howard Brewer, Lexington, Ky., and David Meridth Brewer, Little River, Calif.; and three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Nicholas Mock, Howard Warren Bazemore, Terrell Gene Stewart, Jim Boddiford, Cleve Freeman and Billy Tucker.

Mr. R.T. Brown

Retired truck driver

VIDALIA, Ga. -- Mr. R.T. Brown, 67, of 2620 Cadillac Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at his residence.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Murchison Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pinecrest cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mr. Brown, a native of Chatham County, was a retired truck driver with Piggly Wiggly Southern and a member of Bible Baptist Church. He was a member of Lyons Lodge No. 49 and Toombs Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Brown; one son, Roy Brown, Soperton; one daughter, Margie Page, Tarrytown; two brothers, Delmas Brown, Vidalia, and Frank Brown, Dublin; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mary Butler

Businesswoman

Mrs. Mary Butler, of Evans, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Poteet Funeral Home, Greene Street, with the Rev. Frederick A. Green officiating. Burial will be in Westover Memorial Park.

Mrs. Butler, a native of Belfast, Ireland, was self-employed and a Catholic. She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross.

Survivors include one brother, Herbert Graham, Belfast; and one sister, Iris Latif, Martinez.

Friends may call at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Parker Corley

BLACKVILLE, S.C. -- Mr. Parker William Corley, 28, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, in Barnwell.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Barnwell County Memorial cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery with the Rev. Shad Douglas officiating.

Mr. Corley, a native of Augusta, was an electrician.

Survivors include one son, Brian Corley, Williston; one daughter, Samantha Corley, Williston; his father, Alonzo E. Corley III, Barnwell; his mother, Mary W. Aumiller, Blackville; his stepfather, Lynwood Aumiller, Blackville; three brothers, James Chavis, Barnwell, Raymond Chavis, Orangeburg, and Alonzo E. Corley IV, Blackville; one sister, Kimley C. Davis, Barnwell; and his grandfather, Luther Williams, Millette.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Mole Funeral Home, Barnwell.
