Mrs. Winifred VanSickle Adriance, 98, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, in Augusta.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Lakeview cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, New Canaan, Conn.

Mrs. Adriance, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, was a homemaker and an Episcopalian.

Survivors include one daughter, Josephine J. Finsness, Palm Beach, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Jan Sterling Douglas, Los Angeles, and Mimi Welfeld, Palm Beach; and one grandchild.

Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Telfair Street, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Samuel Augustus Sr.

BLACKVILLE, S.C. -- Mr. Samuel Augustus Sr. of Oak Street died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, in Orlando, Fla.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Green's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Blackville cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mr. Augustus was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include three brothers, Solomon Augustus and Willie Augustus, both of New York, and Jerry Augustus, New Orleans; and three sisters, Georgiann Ward, New York, and Rosa Lee Augustus and Pernell Augustus, both of Blackville.

Mr. Samuel Bates Jr.

ELKO, S.C. -- Mr. Samuel Bates Jr., of Bay Street, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at Medical College of Charleston.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at St. Peter Baptist Church. Burial will be in Elko cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mr. Bates, a native of Barnwell County, was a member of St. Peter Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Bates; one brother, Robert Bates, Elko; one sister, Ella Bates, New York; and five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter Baptist Church.

Green's Funeral Home, Blackville, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Roger Boyd

Carpenter

DEARING -- Mr. Roger Boyd, 89, of 4134 Boyd-Bradshaw Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Windermere Nursing Home, Augusta.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Spring Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Louisville, with the Rev. Thomas O. Lampkin officiating.

Mr. Boyd, a native of Jefferson County, was a carpenter and general contractor. He was a member of Spring Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie Lewis Boyd, Dearing; six sons, Joe Louis Boyd and Harold Boyd, both of Atlanta, Marcus Boyd, Dearing, Sammie Boyd, Anchorage, Alaska, Marvin Boyd, Mobile, Ala., and Jay Arthur Boyd, Killeen, Texas; five daughters, Ruth Miller and Elmyria Hudson, both of Augusta, Norene Pearson, Dearing, Pearl Hollis, Atlanta, Annie and Lula Noquera, Los Angeles; two brothers, Joe Boyd, Dearing, and Frank Boyd, Springfield, Mass.; two sisters, Mary Winn, Buffalo, N.Y., and Lula Adams, Augusta; and 33 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be nephews and grandsons.

Friends may call at the residence or Thomson Funeral System, Thomson.

The family will receive friends after the burial at the church.

Mr. James Calhoun

EDGEFIELD, S.C. -- Mr. James Calhoun, 81, of 346 Marigold St., died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at University Hospital, Augusta.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Willow Spring Baptist Church with Dr. Earnest Cain officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, Willie Calhoun and Jacob Calhoun, both of Edgefield, and Johnny Calhoun, West Palm Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Ella Mae Calhoun, Edgefield; one sister, Martha Diggs, New Jersey; and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today at Davis Funeral Home, Johnston.

Rev. James Dickert

Lutheran minister

WHITE ROCK, S.C. -- The Rev. James Cannon Dickert, 82, of Lowman Home, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at his residence.

The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Ascension Lutheran Church, Columbia, with the Rev. Ron Brown officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Gardens.

The Rev. Dickert, a native of Columbia, was an ordained minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He served Grace Lutheran Church, Liberty, N.C., St. John's Lutheran Church, Clinton, Reformation Lutheran Church, Lancaster, and Ehrhardt Memorial Lutheran Church, Ehrhardt. He was the organizing pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church, Augusta, and a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Chapin. He received a bachelor of science degree in commerce from the University of South Carolina and a bachelor of divinity degree from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.

Survivors include his wife, Nell West Dickert; one son, Andy Dickert, Simpsonville; two sisters, Elizabeth Dickert Vinson, White Rock, and Dorothy Dickert Sharpe, Columbia; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers will be the South Carolina Synod pastors.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Irmo, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ernest Gay

Truck driver

Mr. Ernest Gay, 77, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at Columbia Augusta Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road. Burial will be in Walker Family cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Dearing.

Mr. Gay, a native of Dearing, was a truck driver with Brown Transport and a Protestant.

The family said he loved his family and always put them first. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone without any expectations of repayment.

Survivors include his wife, Queen Gay; two sons, Wayne Gay, North Augusta; and Melvin Gay, Belvedere; one daughter, Edna Stewart, Cocoa, Fla.; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Buddy Gay, James Gay, Steven Weeks and Richard Stephens.

Honorary pallbearers will be former members of Brown Transportation Drivers.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Frank Gresham

TIGNALL, Ga. -- Mr. Frank Gresham, 45, of 120 Wilson St., died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Washington, with the Rev. G.L. Avery officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

Mr. Gresham, a native of Wilkes County, served in the Army and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa M. Gresham; two stepsons, John L. Small, Tignall, and Mitchell Small, Atlanta; his stepmother, Edna M. Gresham; three brothers, Jessie Gresham, Evanston, Ill., Calvin Gresham, Lockhart, Texas, and George Ferrell, New York; four sisters, Janie Everett and Georgia M. Weems, both of Detroit, Pecola Heard, Washington, and Catherine Freeman, Atlanta.

Davenport-McLendon Mortuary, Washington, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gladys Hammonds-Grant

Homemaker

AIKEN -- Mrs. Gladys Hammonds-Grant, 85, of 1327 Hampton Ave. N.W., died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at University Hospital, Augusta.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Murdaugh officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

Mrs. Hammonds-Grant, a native of Allendale, was a homemaker and a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include six sons, Eugene Hammonds, Ernest Hammonds, Eddie Hammonds, Hughsey Hammonds Jr. and Johnnie Hammonds, all of Aiken, and Willie Joseph Hammonds, Allendale; four daughters, Catherine Gartrell and Minnie Lee Creech, both of Aiken, Ronnie H. Martin, Dale City, Va., and Verna M. Boynton, Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Edward Boynton, Allendale; and 35 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Benjamin Mims, Morris Mims, William Mims, Marion Martin, Melvin Basket, Moses Mims and Charles Key.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

Friends may call at the residence or at 3 p.m. today at Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home.

Ms. Nina Holland

THOMSON -- Ms. Nina Day Holland, 59, of 312 Magnolia Drive, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at her residence.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Bennett and Patrick Shannon officiating. Burial will be in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Holland, a native of Warren County, was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Jay Holland, Kennesaw; two daughters, Jan H. Keith, Gatlinburg, Tenn., and Jennifer H. Cook, Warrenton; her mother, Nellie Reese Day, Thomson; one sister, Vylene D. Purvis, Anderson, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jack Hill Jr., Steve Hill, Tommy Gant, Lenton ``Junior" Davis, Stanley Dallas and Bob Wilson Jr.

Friends may call at the residence or until 12:30 p.m. Sunday at John B. Johnson Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
