Mrs. Nell Denby

JOHNSTON, S.C. -- Mrs. Nell Burnette Denby, 66, of Route 2, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at her residence.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Ebenezer cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Trenton, with the Rev. R.O. Johnson officiating.

Mrs. Denby, a native of Edgefield, was a homemaker and a Baptist. She was a retired textile worker.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas E. Denby; three daughters, Jeanne Buzhardt and Pauline Bledsoe, both of Aiken, and Brenda Caddell, Edgefield; her mother, Estelle B. Burnette, Edgefield; one brother, Jesse E. Burnette, Aiken; two sisters, Betty Jean Taylor, Johnston, and Lena Miltiano, Cleveland; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Shelton Covar, Ed Lamb, Lee Doolittle, Chip Taylor, Tim Enlow and Winthrop Hallman.

Friends may call at the residence.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.

Mr. Jack Hawkins

Retiree

Mr. Jack Sharkie Hawkins, 68, of 2307 Old McDuffie Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at University Hospital.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road, with the Rev. James Bland officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Hawkins, a native of Gibson, Ga., was retired from Serta Mattress Co. and was the former owner of Bi-Rite Food Store. He was a member of Bayvale Baptist Church.

The family said there was no kinder or gentler man that suffered so long. We praise God that he is now at peace with him.

Survivors include his wife, Mazina F. Hawkins; three sons, Gregory Hawkins, Waynesboro, Ga., Gary Hawkins, Augusta, and David Hawkins, Hephzibah; his mother, Zeddie Hawkins, Gibson; four brothers, O.C. Hawkins and Jamie Hawkins, both of Gibson, Harold Hawkins, Athens, Ga., and Ronnie Hawkins, St. Louis; one sister, Jessie Sue Sammons, Gibson; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Rollins, Roy Black, Jamie Hawkins Jr., Timmy Rollins, Tommy Hawkins and Vinson James.

Mr. Willie Henderson

Mr. Willie HendersonMr. Willie Henderson of 2455 Madrid Drive died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home with Roger Spratt officiating. Burial will be in Southview cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mr. Henderson was a native of Aiken County.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae ``Betty" Henderson; two sons, William Lewis Henderson and Henry Lee Jackson; three daughters, Maxine Wimberly, Phillis Scott and Stephanie Williams; his mother, Elizabeth Anthony; one brother, Jesse Henderson; two sisters, Georgette Nelson and Minnie Elam; and 12 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Antonio Conway, Vincent Williams Sr., Dusham Wimberly, Demeterius Wimberly, Monzell Wimberly and Clyde Martin.

Friends may call at the residence.

Mr. Sanford Hershey Sr.

Mayor

SYLVANIA, Ga. -- Mr. Sanford E. Hershey Sr., 76, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at Memorial Medical Center, Savannah.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Screven County High School auditorium with the Rev. Ralph E. Dixon Jr. officiating.

Mr. Hershey, a native of Cleveland, was the mayor of Sylvania since 1991 and was a retired football coach. He was a head high school football coach at schools in Georgia, Florida and South Carolina. He coached at the University of Florida in the 1961-62 season. He had been director of marketing and sales with Random House Publishing Co. in the library and book divisions. He taught social studies, and served as a guidance counselor and assistant at various high schools. He was associate booster director and consultant to the athletics department for Georgia Southern University. He was a former president of the Georgia High School Coaches Association, an honorary lifetime member of the Georgia Coaches Association and a member of the Screven County Athletic Hall of Fame. He served as first district vice president and president of the Georgia Municipal Association, president of the Sylvania Rotary Club and director of the board of the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia. He was a member of Liberty Presbyterian Church.

The family said he was proud to be a Gator.

Survivors include his wife, Mary M. Hershey; two sons, Sanford E. Hershey Jr., Jonesboro, and James E. Hershey, Atlanta; two daughters, Susan H. Childree and Anne H. Easom, both of Cordele; one brother, Edward F. Hershey, Leesburg, Fla.; and nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sylvania City Council, employees of City Hall of Sylvania and members of the Sylvania Rotary Club.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Jean Hagan, 114 Morningside Drive, Sylvania, GA 30467; or the American Diabetes Association, 1 Corporate Square, Suite 127, Atlanta, GA 30329.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mattie Jackson

Homemaker

AIKEN -- Mrs. Mattie Jackson, 63, of 245 Locke Lane S.E., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at her residence.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Baptist Church, Trenton, with the Rev. Nathaniel Langford officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

Mrs. Jackson, a native of Edgefield County, was a homemaker and a member of Union Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior choir and the Union Baptist Society. She was a member of Singing Stars Fan Club, Johnston.

Survivors include two daughters, Mattie Pixley and Diane Frazier, both of Aiken; two brothers, John Williams and James Williams, both of Atlanta; three sisters, Mary Williams, Aiken, and Frances Terrell and Carrie Washington, both of Augusta; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be members of the Singing Stars Fan Club.

Friends may call at the residence, at 2 p.m. today at Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home; or from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Alma Kron

Retired dental assistant

Mrs. Alma J. Kron, 84, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Teresa's Catholic Church with the Rev. Walter DiFransico officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Langley.

Mrs. Kron, a native of Richmond, Minn., was a retired dental assistant with the Fort Gordon Civil Service. She was a member of St. Teresa's of Avila.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary K. Sahm and Donna Adams, both of Augusta, and Rita K. Lovering, Martinez; two brothers, Ralph Zumwalde and Walter Zumwalde, both of Richmond; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Michael Sahm, Donald Sahm, Brian Lovering and Kevin Lovering.

The family will receive friends today after the 5 p.m. vigil at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Columbia Road.

Mr. George Markert

Court administration director

COLUMBIA -- Mr. George Anton Markert, 47, of 2402 Park St., died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Washington Street United Methodist Church.

Mr. Markert, a native of Augusta, was director of the South Carolina Court Administration and a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church and the Palmetto Mastersingers. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law.

Survivors include two brothers, H. Rupert Markert, Florence, and Gary P. Markert, Gaithersburg, Md.

Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of the South Carolina Court Administration.

Memorials may be made to Washington Street United Methodist Church Memory Garden.

Dunbar Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Roy Moore

Mr. Roy E. Moore, 55, of 2143 Balfour Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at his residence.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hillcrest Memorial Park with the Rev. Robert Boyd officiating.

Mr. Moore was a native of Augusta.

Survivors include his mother, Cora Moore, Augusta; and one brother, Roy C. Moore Jr., Augusta.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road.

Mrs. Claire Struble

Homemaker

NORTH AUGUSTA -- Mrs. Claire Ann Struble, 59, of 109 Running Creek Road, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Magnolia Nursing Center, Augusta.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kyper Funeral Home, State College, Pa. Burial will be in Center County Memorial Park, State College.

Mrs. Struble, a native of Lewisburg, Pa., was a homemaker.

The family said she enjoyed working in the outdoors.

Survivors include her husband, Dean Irvin Struble; one son, Allan Dean Struble, State College; two daughters, Holly Jean Struble Zeigler, Runville Bellefonte, Pa., and Darla Kay Struble Baker, Spring Mills, Pa.; her father, Harold C. Ross; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Hatcher Funeral Home, Langley, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mayneta Warren

BATH -- Mrs. Mayneta Lindler Warren, 97, of 120 Maple St., died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at National Health Care Center, North Augusta.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sunset Memory Gardens, Langley.

Mrs. Warren, a native of Stillmore, Ga., was retired from Bath Mill and was a member of Bath First Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Josh Warren Jr., Clearwater; one daughter, Eloise Brown, St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Ansel Bridgers, Adam Brown, Josh Brown, Yates Villepigue, Ernie Brown and Kyle Brown.

Friends may call at the residence of Josh Warren Jr., 3102 Edgewood Drive, North Augusta.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hatcher Funeral Home, Langley.
