Mrs. Nellie Counts

Retired school bus driver

SYLVANIA, Ga. -- Mrs. Nellie Skinner Counts, 71, of 411 Pine St., died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Bulloch Memorial Hospital, Statesboro.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home with the Rev. Lillian Rabun officiating. Burial will be in Screven County Memorial cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mrs. Counts, a native of Screven County, had retired from the Screven County Board of Education as a school bus driver after 21 years of service. She was a member of Sylvania Foursquare Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Lovett Skinner, Yuma, Ariz., and Arnold Skinner, Springfield; and two sisters, Ellen S. Owens, Sylvania, and Nira S. Chance, Perkins.

Pallbearers will be Ken Thompson, Gerald French, Jason Ballard, Clarence Gnann, Ellis Skinner and Larry Herrington.

Friends may call at the funeral home.

Mrs. Margie Eubanks

Retired social worker

Mrs. Margie Eddington Eubanks, 74, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Beverly Manor Care Center.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown, with Dr. Colin Dacus officiating.

Mrs. Eubanks, a native of Springfield, Mo., had retired from the Office of Economic Opportunity as a social worker. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Hattaway, Augusta; her mother, Mary Eddington, Springfield; two brothers, Donald A. Eddington and Wayman Kenneth Eddington, both of Springfield; a sister, Bell Florette Inglesbe, Springfield; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Platt's Funeral Home, Crawford Avenue.

Mr. R.O. Anderson

HARLEM -- Mr. R.O. Anderson, 89, of 6644 Wrightsboro Road, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at his residence.

Mrs. Ruth Fowke

Department of Defense retiree

COLUMBIA -- Mrs. Ruth Gillespie Fowke, 84, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Providence Hospital.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Eau Claire Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Alan Mallory and H.R. Patteson officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Old Baptist cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Boiling Springs community, Barnwell County.

Mrs. Fowke, a native of St. Joseph, Mo., had retired from the Department of Defense. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Legion Post No. 6 Auxiliary and Eau Claire Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Women's Circle.

Survivors include two sons, James G. Fowke, North Augusta, and Havener B. ``Hal" Fowke, Cayce; a daughter, Phyllis Fowke Laughridge, Columbia; three brothers, George R. Gillespie Jr., Bessemer City, N.C., Charles R. Gillespie, High Point, N.C., and David E. Gillespie, Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Frances LeFever Faeth, Foot Hills Ranch, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren, 13 stepgrandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ruth Groves

Retired resident manager

GROVETOWN -- Mrs. Ruth B. Groves, 79, of 1149 Reynolds Farm Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital.

There will be no funeral services.

Mrs. Groves, a native of Rapid City, S.D., had retired as a resident manager.

Her family said she was admired and loved by all who knew her and will be missed greatly.

Survivors include two sons, Greg Groves and Brad Groves; two daughters, Sherry Timmer and Jeannie Greene; and 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Miss Celeste Hatcher

Retired librarian

SAVANNAH -- Miss Celeste G. Hatcher of Claremont Circle died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Savannah Specialty Care Center.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethlehem cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Graniteville, with the Rev. Phillip Watson officiating.

Miss Hatcher, a native of Aiken, was a graduate of Aiken County public schools and South Carolina State College. She had retired from the Carnegie Branch Library and the Savannah Public Library after 34 years of service. She was a former librarian for Paine College, where she was honored by the Savannah Chatham Coalition of Black Women. She had received the Hampton Institute Award for Outstanding Leadership.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home, Aiken.

Mr. Daniel Hughes Sr.

Retired railroad conductor

BEECH ISLAND -- Mr. Daniel Gibson Hughes Sr., 68, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at his residence.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Marvin United Methodist Church, Martinez, with Dr. John Page officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Augusta.

Mr. Hughes, a native of Alma, Ga., had retired from CSX as a railroad conductor and was an amateur genealogist.

His family said he was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Lampley Hughes; two sons, David Hughes and Clifton ``Cliff" Hughes, both of North Augusta; two daughters, Vera McDowell, Belvedere, and Barbara Benjamin, North Augusta; a brother, Gene Hughes Gray, Martinez; a sister, Lessie Chapman, Evans; and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Garland, John Garland, Christopher Gray, Philip Prince Jr., James Lee Wheelin and Dennis Sidener.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, GA 30904.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Thomas L. King Funeral Home, Martinez.

Mr. Bill Johnson

Nuclear security officer

SARDIS, Ga. -- Mr. William Edward ``Bill" Johnson, 34, of 832 Screven St., died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, in Burke County.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Sardis Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill King officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Sardis cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson, a native of Burke County, was a nuclear security officer for Georgia Power Co. at Plant Vogtle. He was graduate of Augusta College and a veteran of the U.S. Army Airborne, where he earned the rank of first lieutenant. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a past worshipful master and past secretary of Alexander Masonic Lodge No. 385. He was a member of Sardis Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, William E. Johnson II and Mitchell L. Johnson, both of Sardis; his parents, William Johnson Jr. and Enice Henley Johnson, Sardis; and two sisters, Ann J. Watford, Cochran, and Patricia J. Chandler, Sardis.

Pallbearers will be Marty Skinner, Les Jenkins, Arnie Bell, Jeff Oliver, Bill Edmonds, Marvin Henry, Timmy Lovett and Tommy Ansley.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Alexander Lodge No. 385.

Memorials may be made to Sardis Baptist Church General Fund, P.O. Box 280, Sardis, GA 30456.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at DeLoach Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Mrs. Agnes Lamb

Homemaker

SAVANNAH -- Mrs. Agnes Counihan Lamb, 93, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at Savannah Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

The funeral will be at noon Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will be in The Catholic cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mrs. Lamb, a native of Savannah, was a homemaker and a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Carroll Kelly, Augusta; a brother, Michael Counihan, Tybee Island; four sisters, Margaret C. Walsh, Mildred Counihan, Evelyn M. Counihan and Anne Counihan, all of Savannah; and nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church or the St. Mary's Home.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Baker-Hayman Funeral Home, with a rosary service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Millard Norwood

NORTH AUGUSTA -- Mr. Millard W. Norwood, 64, of 4821 Augusta Road, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Augusta.

Mrs. Justine Parker

Licensed practical nurse

NEW YORK -- Mrs. Justine Weathersbee Parker, 79, of 39 Alvin Place, Inwood, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, at St. John Episcopal Hospital.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sand Hill cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Williston, S.C., with the Rev. W.J. Simmons officiating.

Mrs. Parker, a native of Williston, was a licensed practical nurse for Five Town Community Health Care Center, where she served on the board. She was a graduate of Aiken County public schools, and she was a member of Culbert Branch Baptist Church and Westminister Presbyterian Church, Queens.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Jessie Parker and Irvin Parker, both of Queens, Stephen Parker and Tyrone Parker, both of Nassau County; a daughter, Rosaland Parker, Pocono, Pa.; a sister, LaCree Garvin, Jamaica; two stepbrothers, John J. Allen and Phillip Allen, both of Queens; a stepsister, Ethel Woodward, Wilson, N.C.; and 14 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday and until 10 a.m. Tuesday at Simmons Funeral Home, Williston.

Mrs. Violet Potteiger

Homemaker

Mrs. Violet Esther Potteiger, 91, of 118 Springlakes Drive, Martinez, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at her residence.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. R. Allen Stewart and Dr. K.C. Stevens officiating.

Mrs. Potteiger, a native of Reading, Pa., was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, West Reading, Pa.

Her family said she was a great mother and grandmother, devoted to loving all and impressing the value of family upon her loved ones.

Survivors include three daughters, Sarah H. Bond, Lansdale, Pa., Lynne P. Young, Augusta, and Amelia P. Wiener, Winter Park, Fla.; and 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospital Hospice Program, 2260 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, GA 30904.
