Mrs. Picola Baker

SPARTA, Ga. -- Mrs. Picola Baker, 86, of Route 3, died Thursday, March 26, 1998 at Oconee Regional Medical Center of Milledgeville.

The funeral will be at noon Monday at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dante Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

Mrs. Baker, a native of Hancock County, was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Willie Baker, N.Y., James Elberts Baker, Patterson, N.J., and Johnnie Baker, Sparta; three daughters, Ella Citizens, Patterson, Gracie Berry, Augusta, and Christine Baker, Sparta; one step-daughter, Ola Mae Kitchens, Sparta; four sisters, Ilean Johnson, Sparta, Gracie Blount, Tampa, Fla., and Rosie Chappel and Essie L. Roberts, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; and 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Ingram Brothers Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. James Bishop

Retired antiques dealer

GREENSBORO, Ga. -- Mr. James Edward Bishop, 56, of 2015 East St., died Thursday, March 26, 1998 at his residence.

The funeral will be at a later date.

Mr. Bishop, a native of Newark, N.J., was a retired antiques dealer and a Protestant.

Survivors include one sister, Harriet Bishop Kennedy, Stuarts Draft, Va.

McCommons Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Randolph Bowman Sr.

Retired construction worker

EDGEFIELD, S.C. -- Mr. Randolph Douglas Bowman Sr., 72, of 28 Peterson Lane, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998 at Edgefield County Hospital.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Lane Baptist Church with Rev. J.T. Tate officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery" target="_blank">cemetery.

Mr. Bowman, a native of Chicago, Ill., was a retired construction worker and a member of Pleasant Lane Baptist Church where he served on several committees.

Survivors include six sons, John Henry Bowman Sr., Randolph D. Bowman-Horton Jr., Willie A. Bowman Sr. and Bermard A. Bowman, all of Washington, and Wendell B. Bowman and Robert A. Bowman, both of Maryland; four brothers, Johnny J. Bowman, Edgefield, Willie F. Bowman and William C. Bowman of Washington, and Howard Bowman, Cheverly, Md.; six sisters, Carrie Simmons, Annie Gilchrist, Anna Murray and Edith Bowman, all of Washington, and Mary Peterson and Gussie Washington, both of Edgefield; 27 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his sons.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Mary Peterson and at noon Sunday at the church.

Blalock's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Doris Brinson

Homemaker

SALUDA, S.C. -- Mrs. Doris Blanche Cobbler Brinson, 68, of Route 1, died Thursday, March 26, 1998 at Richland Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Emanuel Church with the Rev. Burton Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Brinson, a native of Saluda County, was a homemaker and a member of Emanuel Church.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Larry Brinson, Saluda, and Michael Brinson, Orlando, Fla.; one stepson Otis Brinson, Fort Worth, Texas; one daughter, Hazel Keefer, Summerville; two sisters, Frances Adams and Ann Rushton, both of Saluda; two brothers, Sammy Cobbler, Lexington, and Lawrence Edward Cobbler, Saluda; and 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Emanuel Church, P.O. Box 594, Saluda, SC 29138.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today at Ramey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pauline Belk Brinson

Teacher

STAPLETON, Ga. -- Mrs. Pauline Belk Brinson, 95, died Friday, March 27, 1998 at Jefferson County Hospital, Louisville, Ga.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Twin City First Baptist Church with the Revs. Franklin Sasser and Billy Howell officiating. Burial will be in Brinson cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mrs. Brinson, a native of Marion County, was a teacher and a member of Twin City First Baptist Church where she served in the choir and as pianist.

Survivors include one son, B. Lewis Brinson Jr., Savannah; and one daughter, Elaine Belk Brinson Evans, Bartow; and six grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Benjamin L. Brinson III, Lane E. Brinson, Wiley C. Evans IV, Matthew Evans, Jonathan Belk Brinson, Dolan E. Brown III, David B. Brown and Mark H. Brown.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Laurene Coleman Baptist Women.

Memorials may be made to Twin City First Baptist Church, Twin City, GA 30471.

Mrs. Elizabeth Browning

Homemaker

BLACKVILLE, S.C. -- Mrs. Elizabeth Ray Browning, 82, of Main Street, died Friday, March 27, 1998 at her residence.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Folk Funeral Home, Williston, with the Revs. Johnathan Hickman and Tommy Hutto officiating. Burial will be in Barnwell Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Browning, a native of Sleytown Community, Barnwell, was a homemaker and a member of Unity Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Browning, Cottageville, Willis ``Bo Bee" M. Browning, Blackville; two daughters, Betty B. Jones, Blackville, and Marlene B. Estridge, Folly Beach; three brothers, Leighton Ray, Swansea, Bobby Ray, Orlando, Fla., and Howard Ray, Columbia; three sisters, Louise R. Rimer, Clearwater, Fla., Mary R, Layson, Macon, and Polly R. Dorn, North Charleston; and nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Palmetto Baptist Hospice, P.O. Box 1123, Bamberg, SC 29003.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Albert Bumpus

Lumber company owner

Mr. Albert E. Bumpus, 87, of 1902 Melrose Drive, died Friday, March 27, 1998 at Columbia Augusta Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Glenn Hills Baptist Church with the Revs. John R. Yarborough and Robert Boyd officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Bumpus, a native of Clarksville, Tenn., was owner and president of Bumpus Lumber Company and a charter member of Glenn Hills Baptist Church. He was also a deacon emeritus, former chairman of the building committee, Sunday school superintendent, chairman of deacons at Glenn Hills Baptist Church and a past deacon of Sharon Baptist Church, Appling.

The family said he was the world's greatest father and grandfather and that his handshake was a valid contract.

Survivors include one son, Albert E. Bumpus Jr., Woodbridge, Va.; two daughters, Betty B. Stewart and Mary B. Plunkett, both of Augusta; one sister, Clarice King, Nashville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be Craig Plunkett, Tommy Plunkett, Albert Hankinson, David Thigpen, Donnie Wren and Benny Penn.

Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Glenn Hills Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Poteet Funeral Home South.

Mrs. Lela Carr

Retired seamstress

LOUISVILLE, Ga. -- Mrs. Lela Boyd Carr, 87, of 1160 Handy St., died Wednesday, March 25, 1998 at Glendale Nursing Home.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Spring Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Thomas O. Lampkin officiating. Burial will be in Spring Bethel Benevolent Society cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.

Mrs. Carr, a native of Jefferson County, was a retired seamstress and a member of Spring Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Spring Bethel Benevolent Society.

Survivors include one son, Willie James ``Buddy" Carr Jr., Louisville; one sister, Louise Thomas, Louisville; and seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and five great-great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John Henry Bloomfield, Willie Lee Boyd, Robert Wells, Willie Lewis Wells, Bernard Washington, Johnnie Gilmore, Sam Cuyer and Dennis Washington.

Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Glendale Nursing Home and officers of Spring Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Friends may call at the residence of Denise Carr Brown, 1160 Handy St.; or at Davis Funeral Home.

Mrs. Esther Cato

Retired teacher

RINCON, Ga. -- Mrs. Esther Mathis Cato, 93, of 211 Westwood Drive, died Friday, March 27, 1998 at her residence.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Beaufort National cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery, Beaufort, S.C., with the Revs. Jim Murphey and Travis Cowart officiating.

Mrs. Cato, a native of Jefferson County, was a retired school teacher and a member of First Baptist Church of Rincon.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Albers and Alma Cato, both of Rincon; and one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Rincon Building Fund, P.O. Box 249, Rincon, GA 31326.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Thomas C. Strickland Funeral Home.

Mr. Franklin Cooper

Retired millwright

Mr. Franklin Delano Cooper, 61, died Thursday, March 26, 1998 at University Hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Hillcrest Memorial Park with the Rev. Don Cooper officiating.

Mr. Cooper, a native of Millen, Ga., was a retired millwright and a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church. He was a Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion Post 400.

Survivors include his wife, Karen S. Cooper; one son, Michael Shayne Lanham, Jacksonville, Fla.; five daughters, Sherrie Ann Huitt, Heather Leigh Lane and Shannon Lynn Cooper, all of Augusta, Terrie Ann Leek, Columbus, Ga., and Stephany Ann Diedrich, Blythe, Ga.; one brother, Wilmer Cooper, Millen; and 10 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jack Ryles, Robert Amerson, Billy Huitt, Travis Lane, Paul Mason and Tom Leek.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Poteet Funeral Home South.
