GROVETOWN -- Mr. Paul E. Williams, 75, of 4845 Columbia Road, died Saturday, June 20, 1998, in Augusta.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Hillcrest Memorial Park with the Rev. William T. Deneke officiating.
Mr. Williams, a native of Kirkwood, N.Y., had lived in the Augusta area for 50 years. He had retired from the Medical College of Georgia. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Church of Our Savior.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Williams; three sons, Paul E. Williams Jr. and Robert E. Williams, both of Grovetown, and David Williams, Leesville, S.C.; two daughters, Glenda Patterson, Grovetown, and Patricia Garcia, Evans; two sisters, Elnora Wilson, LeRaysville, Pa., and Barbara Laird, Tyrone, N.M.; and nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

NEWINGTON, Ga. -- Mr. C. Reginald Woods Sr., of 201 Oliver Highway, died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at Bulloch Memorial Hospital, Statesboro.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Newington Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Scarborough officiating. Private burial will be in Newington City cemetery" target="_blank">Cemetery.
Mr. Woods, a native of Screven County, had been a Newington merchant for 55 years. He served on the Newington Housing Authority and was a former member of the Newington Lions Club. He was a member and former deacon at Newington Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Woodcock Woods; two sons, Charles R. Woods Jr., Valdosta, and H. Ashley Woods, Beaufort, S.C.; a brother, William M. Woods, Palm Harbor, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Woods, Owen Woods, Billy Woods, Charlie Hutto, Gill Stewart and William Futch.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of Newington Baptist Church.

Mr. Jeffers, a native of Jenkins County, had retired from the Savannah Police Department. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, a Mason and a Baptist.
Survivors include a daughter, Becky J. Middleton, Ludowici; a brother, Joseph C. Jeffers, Savannah; a stepbrother, J.D. Mikell, Savannah; and three grandchildren.

Mr. Cogburn, a native of Edgefield County, had retired as a farmer and was the former owner of Cogburn's Grill, Columbia. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. He was a Mason and a 32-year member of the Gamecock Club. He was a member and deacon of Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Othella Balchin Cogburn; a brother, Steve Cogburn, West Columbia; and six sisters, Rebecca James, Helen Padgett Hare and Sue Cogburn, all of Edgefield, Ruby Mae Timmerman, Ninety Six, Rhett Oneal, Anderson, and Joan Nobles, Toccoa, Ga.

Rev. Allen Clarkson
Day school founder

The Rev. Allen Boykin Clarkson, longtime rector of Church of the Good Shepherd and founder of Episcopal Day School died Friday at his Augusta residence.
He was 85. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Church of the Good Shepherd on Walton Way.
The Rev. Clarkson was a leader in the parochial day school movement in the Episcopal church and founded Episcopal Day School in Augusta in 1944. He also was one of the founders of the National Association of Episcopal Schools.
He was rector of Church of the Good Shepherd from 1942 to 1979 and was rector emeritus from 1980 until his death. When he came to Augusta in 1942, there were five Episcopal churches here. By the time the Rev. Clarkson retired in 1979, he had a ``greater or lesser influence" on the birth of eight more churches, he said in a 1979 article in The Augusta Chronicle.
The Rev. Clarkson did not abandon church work when he retired. From 1980 until his death, he also assisted at various Episcopal parishes in Georgia and South Carolina. He was the priest-in-charge at All Saints Church in Beech Island from 1981 to 1986.
The Rev. Clarkson was born May 15, 1913 in Columbia. He was the son of the late Nathaniel Heyward Clarkson and Floride Cantey.
He earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1936 from the University of South Carolina. In 1939, he received a bachelor of divinity degree from St. Luke's Seminary at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. The Rev. Clarkson received an honorary doctorate of divinity degree in 1971 from the University of the South.
The Rev. Clarkson began his career as a lay assistant at Trinity Church in Columbia, where he served from 1932-1936. He was ordained deacon at Trinity Church in 1939. In 1940, he was ordained priest at the Church of Our Savior in Trenton, S.C.
He was the rector of Trinity Church in Edgefield and was the priest-in-charge at Grace Church in Ridge Spring, S.C. and Church of Our Savior in Trenton.
The Rev. Clarkson was an honorary canon at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Savannah, president of Provincial Parochial School Commission from 1966-1967, a former president of standing committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia and a delegate to seven General Conventions of the Episcopal Church, a national governing body that meets every three years.
The Rev. Clarkson was a member and former president of the Ministerial Association of Augusta. He also was a member of the Lions Club, the Beech Island Agricultural Club, the Richmond County Historical Society, Historic Augusta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and the Red Ribbon Society of the University of the South.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Hamby Clarkson; three sons, Allen B. Clarkson Jr., of New York., Ted H. Clarkson, of Augusta and William D. Clarkson, of St. Matthews, S.C.; two daughters, Mary H. Kelly, of Columbia, and Floride C. Dickert, of Augusta; and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Allen B. Clarkson Jr., William D. Clarkson, Neal W. Dickert, Neal W. Dickert Jr., A. Makey Brabham, Ted H. Clarkson, Thomas L. Wagner Jr., Thomas C. Kelly, R. Westmoreland Clarkson and A. McKay Brabham III.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Church of the Good Shepherd Parish House.

Mrs. Patricia ``Pat" Challenger, 53, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, in Columbia County.

Mrs. Challenger, a native of Ballston Spa, N.Y., had lived in Augusta for 20 years. She was a graduate of the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia, where she was a member of the Alumni Association, and of Chaminade University, Honolulu. She was a registered nurse and clinical research coordinator at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center. She was a member of the Augusta Striders and the Augusta Freewheelers. She was a member of the female barbershop quartet Satin Trim and the mixed quartet Dynamic, and she volunteered on the uniform and make-up committee for the Garden City Barber Shop Chorus. She was a Protestant.
Survivors include her husband, William H. ``Chall" Challenger; a son, Brett A. Challenger, Izmir, Turkey; a daughter, Jill Debra Challenger Painter, Paris, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Sheri Challenger Perkins, Hickory, N.C.; her father, Lyman Palmatier, Melbourne, Fla.; her mother, Doris Palmatier, Barefoot Bay, Fla.; a brother, Richard L. Palmatier, Schenectady, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
