He was a native of Chatham County, where he attended public schools.

STATESBORO -- Martha Bailey Anderson, 58, died June 6 at Bulloch Memorial Hospital.

She was a Bulloch County native and a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: a son, Wayne B. Anderson of Statesboro; a daughter, Diane NeSmith of Register; a sister, Frances J. Woodcock of Connecticut; and four grandchildren.

Margie Y. Bisbee

YEMASSEE, S.C. -- Margie Youmans Bisbee, 72, died June 6 at home.

She was a native of Early Branch, S.C. She was a retired secretary, having worked with the Council on Aging in Yemassee, and was a member of Yemassee Methodist Church. She was an Air Force veteran.

SURVIVORS: a son, Robert Bisbee of Guyton; a brother, Johnny Youmans of Yemassee; three sisters, Annie M. Reeves of Yemassee, Leona Brasington of Heath Springs, S.C., and Myrtle Mickel of Beaufort; a granddaughter, Crystal D. Shaffer of Guyton; a grandson, Albury S. Shaffer of Guyton; and several nieces and nephews.

Sadye Richman Block, 94, died June 5 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was a native of Savannah and the widow of David Block. She was the retired owner and operator of Block Cleaning Supply Co. She was a member of Congregation B'nai Brith Jacob Synagogue, Hadassah, and the Jewish Educational Alliance.

SURVIVORS: two nieces, Myrna Becker of Albany, N.Y., and Doris Kadish of Athens; and a great-niece, Jillian Silva of St. Louis, Mo.

MIDWAY -- Marie P. Bowens, 77, died June 4 at Candler Hospital in Savannah.

She was a native of Liberty County, a household technician, and was a member of New Testament Gospel Center in Midway. She was a deaconess, served on the Board of Directors, and was the eldest and mother of her church.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Velma Stuckey of Little Springs; a brother, Frank Polite of Midway; and five grandsons.

VISITATION: 7-8 p.m. Monday at Dorchester Funeral Home, Midway.

Carroll L. Cowart

Carroll L. Cowart, 86, died June 5 at home on Wilmington Island.

He was a Tattnall County native and lived in Glennville for 36 years. He graduated from Emory University. He was an Army veteran, having served in World War II. He taught at Glennville High School and practiced law for 18 years. He served as a public defender for the Atlantic Judicial Circuit, an attorney for Tattnall County Board of Education, the city of Glennville, and was a judge of the Glennville Municipal Court. He was a member of the Atlantic Judicial Bar Association, the Glennville VFW No. 8379, and Glennville United Methodist Church, where he was a teacher at Cowart Memorial Sunday school class. He was an insurance claims manager for 30 years,working with Continental Assurance Co.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Elizabeth Goluckle Cowart of Wilmington Island; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol E. Sand of Seattle, and Connie C. and Ted Hightower of Savannah; a sister-in-law, Vivian W. Cowart of Glennville; and several cousins, nephews and nieces.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. Monday at Carter Funeral Chapel, Glennville.

Durell L. Donaldson Jr.

Durell Lee Donaldson Jr., 51, died June 6 at Candler Hospital.

He was a native of Savannah and a Marine Corps veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and was the owner of Carriage Cleaners.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Sandra Kent Donaldson of Savannah; two sons, Glenn and Timothy Donaldson, both of Savannah; two daughters, Sherry and Kelly Donaldson, both of Savannah; his mother, Virgin W. Donaldson of Savannah; three sisters, Shirley Benson of Freeland, Mich., Cecile Linton of Savannah, and Linda Battle of Orlando, Fla.; a grandson, Timothy R. Donaldson of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.

Howard G. Downing

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Howard Gaston Downing, 80, died June 4 at Preston Health Center.

He was a native of Minneapolis, moved to Hilton Head in 1988 from Flint, Mich., and served as a 1st lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. He was a graduate of Armour Tech in Chicago, a member of Moss Creek Golf Club, owned the insurance company Howard G. Downing Inc., and was past president of Flint Golf in Flint. He was the widower of Jane Marie Downing.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Irene Marie Hinton Downing of Hilton Head; a son, Howard G. Downing of Holly, Mich.; a daughter, Gail D. Morgan of Grand Blanc, Mich.; a stepson, Marvin Simmons of Fairfield, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Lisa D'Amore of Masury, Ohio, and Sherry Simmons of Jacksonville, Fla.; two granddaughters, Maureen and Sydney Smith, both of Grand Blanc, Mich.; two stepgranddaughters, Dr. Laura Kovalcik and Dr. Margaret Hollar ; and a stepgrandson, Tyler J. Dellaire; and other relatives.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: 10: 30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church. A reception will follow at Moss Creek Golf Course.

Jacqueline B. Gantt

BEAUFORT -- Jacqueline Berlina Gantt, 55, died June 2 at St. Joseph's/Candler Hospital in Savannah.

She was a native of Beaufort, and was a 1959 honor graduate of Robert Smalls High School. In 1963, she received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Benedict College in Columbia. In 1976, she received her master's degree in education from Southern University, Baton Rouge, La. Additional study was completed at North Carolina A&T College in Greensboro, N.C., and the University of South Carolina-Beaufort. She taught in Georgetown County School District for one year and for 32 years in the Beaufort County School District until her retirement in 1996. She was a consultant to the Academics Challenge Writing Team, and was Beaufort County Teacher of the Year in 1986. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, participating in many outreach ministries. She was a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible school teacher, and a member of Ward Five.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Vonetta S. Gantt of Beaufort; her mother, Theresa S. Gantt of Beaufort; two sisters and a son-in-law, Dr. Lella T. and Dr. Charles W. Bonds of Statesboro, and Elaine F. Gantt of Washington, D.C.; a brother and a sister-in-law, James W. and Mary Gantt of Sheldon, S.C.; and three nephews, a niece and other relatives.

VISITATION: 7-8 p.m. today at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Beaufort.

FUNERAL: 1 p.m. Monday at Tabernacle Baptist Church, burial in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.

Herbert C. Gunner

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Herbert Charles Gunner, 83, died June 3 at Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics.

He was a native of Morgan Park, Ill., and moved to Hilton Head Island in 1979 from Evanston, Ill. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1934. He was an officer in the Army during World War II. He was chairman of the Board of Directors of The Seabrook, a member of Providence Presbyterian Church where he was treasurer, and participated in the SCORE program. He was the widower of Helen Mae Gunner.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Jean Gunner; two daughters, Jill G. Cornish of St. Davids, Pa., and Judith Gunner of Lexington, Va.; a son, John H. Gunner of Lexington; and six grandchildren.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. June 13 at Providence Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow at The Seabrook.

James B. Henley

James Beryl "Jack" Henley, 76, died June 3 at Memorial Medical Center from injuries received in an automobile accident.

He was a native of Bulloch County. He was the widower of Arrie Elizabeth Stafford Henley, and a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Richmond Hill. He was retired from the merchant Marines and served in World War II on several ships that were torpedoed and sunk. He also served in the Coast Guard, and was a member of Seafarers International Union.

SURVIVORS: a son, Lt. Col. L. Thomas Henley, Air Force, South Korea; four daughters, Brinda H. Kelton of Knoxville, Tenn., Jane H. Haymans of Richmond Hill, Kathy H. Hamilton and Frances H. Davis, both of Bloomingdale; and eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home.

Nick Higgins

LUDOWICI -- Nick Higgins, 58, died June 5 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup.

He was a native of Watertown, N.Y. He lived in Hinesville for 30 years, and was a resident of Long County for the past two years. He retired from civil service at Fort Stewart and retired from the Georgia National Guard. He was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Pat Higgins of Ludowici; two daughters, Lynn Simmons and Paula Guyett, both of Ludowici; a son, Nicholas C. Higgins III of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Grace Fortin of Rapid City, S.D., Mary Kidder of Copenhagen, N.Y., and Julie Lester of Black River, N.Y.; three brothers, Ed Higgins of Ogdensburg, N.Y., Skip Higgins of Watertown, and Kenny Higgins of Havelock, N.C.; and three grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

WAKE SERVICE: 7: 30 p.m. today at Carter Funeral Home, Hinesville.

ELLABELL -- Steve Arredondo Montiel, 70, died June 5 at Savannah Hospice.

He was a native of Arizona, and a resident of Bryan County for more than 50 years. He was an Eighth Army Air Corps, veteran having served in World War II and the Korean War. He was the former owner of Amigo's Nursery, from which he retired. He was an active member of Pembroke Lions Club, and a member of Christian Renewal Assembly of God Church in Pembroke.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Carolyn Ruth Montiel of Ellabell; two sons, Steve A. Montiel Jr. of Savannah, and Roy K. Montiel of Daisy; and 12 brothers and sisters.
