Robert Zappa
9/1/1934 - 1/26/2008

Robert Joseph Zappa, 73, of Raymond,Ga, passed away Saturday January 26, 2008. He was born September 1, 1934 in Cumberland, Wi to the late Joseph M. Zappa and the late Elizabeth Zappa. He was the youngest of six children. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. He and his four brothers served our country in the armed forces, three brothers in WWII and Mr. Zappa and his other brother in Korea. R.J. served as Quarter Master III in communications aboard the U.S.S. Turner DDR834 in the United States Navy Pacific Fleet between 1950-1955. AS a mechanical engineer R.J., renouned in his field, pioneered numerous advancements in technology for battery recycling industry. He founded and operated Diversified Sales and Service a highly successful design and engineering firm for 25 years. R.J. was a 32 degree mason and an active member of the Canton lodge. He was well known and loved for his story telling and quick wit and all who spent time with him left with a story and a fond memory. Above all of these many accomplishments he was most of all a loving father and grandfather, and cherished friend. R.J. is survived by his sons Joe Zappa and Rodney Robinson, Daughter Christy Zappa Leich and grandson Sean Leich. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral service for Robert Joseph Zappa,will be Tuesday, Jan 29, 2008 at 2:00Pm at the McKoon Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Terry Calhoun will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, Jan 28, 2008 from 6:00 Pm to 8:00 Pm at the McKoon Funeral Home.

Ruby Jackson
2/3/1917 - 1/24/2008

Mrs. Ruby Kate Hendrix Jackson, age 90, of Newnan died January 24, 2008 at Newnan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Jackson was born at her family’s residence in Roopville, Georgia on February 3, 1917 to the late Marvin Lee and Noma Worley Hendrix. She was the fourth child of 12 children. She grew up and lived in Roopville until moving to Newnan in 1937. There she met Philip Hugh Jackson and they were married on August 31, 1938. In 1942 they moved into their home on First Avenue where they lived for the next 61 years. In 2003, they moved into Georgia Place in independent living. As the result of a fall, Mrs. Jackson had been under the care of Newnan Nursing and Rehabilitation for over a year. During the course of their 69 years of marriage, Ruby and Philip had four children. They are Philip Lee Jackson, James Madison Jackson, Marie Jackson Schall and Cathy Jackson Powell. She treasured her 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. A woman of strong faith, she had been baptized at Glenloch Baptist Church in Heard County. After moving to Newnan, she transferred her membership in 1938 to Newnan First Baptist Church. Her church benefited from her love of children as she served in the nursery for many years. Her greatest joy in life was providing a loving home environment for her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street where the funeral service will be on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at 4:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Jerry Walker and Dr. Jimmy Patterson officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, her memory may be honored by memorial contributions to Newnan First Baptist Church Building Fund or to the Vista Care Hospice Foundation 1585 Highway 34 East Newnan, Georgia 30265.

Chester Shumake
3/29/1922 - 1/24/2008

Chester Eugene Shumake, age 85 passed away on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008. He was born on March 29, 1922 in Carroll County, Georgia to the late John Buren and Stella (Harper) Shumake. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Richards Bennett; brother, Dorsey Shumake and step mother, Buvenia Shumake. Mr. Shumake was a Mason and was affiliated with Sylvan Lodge #429. The family received friends on Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 and Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, Newnan,Ga. Funeral service was held on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008 at 2:00 PM in McKoon Funeral Home Chapel with Earnest Allred officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Charles Jackson, Jerome Johnson, Adam Shumake, Alan Green, Philip Green, Mitchell Kelly Hobby and Matthew Durrough. Honorary pallbearers were masons from Sylvan Lodge #429. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.mckoon.com He is survived by his wife, Edna Merle Shumake of Newnan; daughter, Edith Durrough (Steve); daughter, Jean and husband Larry Holcomb; son, Rickey Shumake(Wanda); daughter, Cindy and husband Mike Green; son, John Shumake(Pam); son, Jeff Shumake(Terri); daughter, Stella and huband Ivan Vrabel and step daughter, Peggy and husband Ronald Carter. Twenty-one grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

Floydene Thomas

She is the daughter of the late George and Eunice (Stokes) Redding. She is survived by her husband, Art Thomas of Newnan; Children; Wayne Thomas of Tucson, AZ., Arthur (Debbie) Thomas, Jr. of Sharpsburg,GA., Tim (Maryellyn) Thomas of Newnan; Chris Thomas of Newnan. Siblings; Joyce Faircloth of Geneva, FL., Yvonne Boykin of Orlando, FL., George Redding of Georgetown, FL., Edmund Redding of Melbourne, FL. Douglas Redding of Dothan, AL., and Frank Redding of Geneva, FL. Mrs. Thomas was the past president of Legion of Mary, along with RCIA. She loved her church, her friends and her community. Francis Sherman
4/30/1931 - 1/23/2008

F.A. "Bud" Sherman departed this planet on January 23, 2008 after a valiant battle with prostate/bone cancer. Bud was born April 30 1931, Francis Anthony Sherman in Jackson Heights, Long Island, New York to Eileen Ward Sherman and Frank J. Sherman. He was the eldest of three brothers. He served in the Army National Guard as a battlefield reconnaissance aviator in the Korean War. Bud continued his life long love of aviation with United Airlines, Western Airlines and retired from Delta Airlines in December 2001. In the 1970's he established the California Airline Institute and taught flight dispatching to students from all over the world. After retiring from the airline world Bud continued his love of teaching as a Reiki master teaching the art of healing. He shared his love of nature with his children and grandchildren. Bud is survived by his wife Beverly LaJoie; his children, Rex (Karen) and Scott (Asako) Sherman and Laura (Mike) LaJoie Bishop and seven Magnificent grandchildren. Bud was always and adventurous free sprit with a love of the outdoors, particularly the Sierra Mountians. This loving, gentle man is remembered as a philosopher, teacher, healer, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, beloved friend. Emory Gene Lee, 79, of Sharpsburg died Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at his home. He was born January 13, 1929 in Felton, GA-Haralson County. He was preceded in death by his wife, June Gore Lee and his mother, Mildred Lee. He was a U.S. Marine and a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the PGA of America and was the Past President of the Georgia Section of the PGA. He is a member of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame and the Coweta Sports Hall of Fame. He was the Head Golf Professional at Canongate for 31 years. The funeral is Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson St, Newnan, GA with Rev. Jerry Eley & Olin Gammage officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM at Northview cemetery in Cedartown, GA. The visitation is Friday evening between 6:00 & 8:00 PM at McKoon Funeral Home. Michael Christy

Michael H. Christy, age 69 of Newnan passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. Mr. Christy is preceded in death by his daughter, Claire Christy as well as his parents, Hugh and Carol Christy and brother Rodney Christy. He is survived by his Wife, Carolyn Christy of Newnan. Children, Kathryn Christy Barnes and husband Jerry Barnes of Denver, CO., Kelly Christy Rosenberg and husband Robert Rosenberg of Dallas, TX. and Michael Carter Christy of Houston, TX. Grandchildren; Haley and Kenny Rosenberg of Dallas, TX. and Jake and Erin Barnes of Denver, CO. Sarah Key
6/3/1910 - 1/22/2008

Sarah Hammond Pippin Key, age 97, passed into the glory of God on January 22, 2008 in Peachtree City, Georgia. Sarah was born in Fredonia, Alabama on June 3, 1910, the daughter of the late Taswell Milton and Cora Lee Hardegree Hammond. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands S. J. Pippin in 1955 and Howard B. Key in 1966. For 15 years, she was the manager of the Carter’s Manufacturing Co. in Forsyth. At the time of her death, Mrs. Key was the elder member of Unity Baptist Church. Surviving Mrs. Key are her children, Dorothy Branton, Beverly Perryman and her husband Richard and Patricia Mobley and her husband Bob. She was the devoted grandmother to seven grandchildren and great grandmother to 12 great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street where the family will receive friends on Friday morning January 25 beginning at 9:30 AM. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Danny Wilson officiating. Friends and family will gather Friday at 3:00 PM in the Forsyth City cemetery for the interment service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Key’s memory to Unity Baptist Church Building Fund 311 Smokey Road Newnan, Georgia 30263.
