WILLIE "BANJO" STONER
Willie L. "Banjo" Stoner, 71, of Lookout Mountain died Dec. 22 in a local hospital. Stoner was a lifelong resident of Lookout Mountain. He was retired from Roadway Express and was a member of Hinkle Baptist Church and of Teamsters Local 515. He was preceded in death by son Willie Kenton "Kent" Stoner and parents James and Sara Stoner. Survivors include wife of 51 years Sara Kirby Stoner; daughters Sabrina J. Long and Caprice D. Stoner of Lookout Mountain, Candyce L. Hitchcock of Soddy Daisy; son Colby T. Stoner of Lookout Mountain; brothers Pete Stoner of Chickamauga, Tom, Dick and Tilburn Stoner all of Rossville; sisters Annie Mahaffey of East Ridge and Audrey Murray of Lookout Mountain; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Dec. 24 in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Jim Lilly officiating. Interment was in Payne's Chapel cemetery on Lookout Mountain. Arrangements were by lane Funeral Home in Rossville.
DONALD WELLS
Donald R. "Donnie" Wells, 51, of Ider, Ala., died Dec. 23. Survivors include daughters Shannon Wells and Ashley Smalley of Midland, Ala.; son Jeremy L. Wells of Ider, Ala.; sister Gracie Gorham of Dutton, Ala.; brothers Roy W. Wells of Pikeville, Tenn., George Wells of Ider, Ala., and Norman Wells of Dutton, three grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services were held Dec. 26 at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel. Arrangements were by Corner Stone Funeral Chapel.
MARY LOU WEST
Mary Lou West, 74, of Higdon died Dec. 20 at a Huntsville Hospital. West owned and operated Lou's fashions in Higdon before retiring. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Elsie Lynn and Tommy Cleckler of Mapelsville, Ala., daughter Valorie West of Higdon; son and daughter-in-law Mark Rufus and Chanda West of Higdon; sister Avie Lona Hall of Sheffield, Ala., nine grandchildren and one grandchild.
MAE WILKS
Mae Whitaker Wilks, 89, of Huntsville, Ala., formally of Ider, Ala., died Dec. 25 at her residence. She was a 50-year member of Ider Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by husbands Elmer Whitaker and Elburn Wilks; daughter Mary Frances Whitaker; parents, Miller and Mamie Smith; brother William Smith. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Ronnie and Linda Whitaker, Henagar, Ala.; step-son and daughter-in-law Charles and Gail Wilks, Decatur, Ala.; daughter and son-in-law Faye and Arlen Moore, Huntsville, Ala.; step-daughter Wynnell Hammonds, Henagar, Ala.; brothers J.B. Smith, Birmingham, Ala., Walter Smith, Atlanta; sister Sara Smith, Nashville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. DONNA SARGENT DURHAM
Mrs. Donna Sargent Durham, 57, of Scottsboro, Ala., died December 11, at Jackson County Hospital.
Survivors include husband, Kenneth Talley, of Scottsboro; daughters, Taneca Stanbrook, of Huntsville, and Brandy Durham, of Flat Rock; brothers, David Sargent, of Macedona, and Tony Sargent, of Sylvania; sisters, Karen Malone, of Rainsville and Kristi Garner, of Bridgeport; and one grandchild, Brandon Stanbrook.
Funeral services were held on December 13, at the Kerby Funeral Home Chapel, with Dewayne Sargen officiating.
Interment was in the Green Haven cemetery at Pisgah.
Arrangements were made by Kerby Funeral Home in Henagar, Ala.
DELMUS MCELHANEY
Delmus Harold McElhaney, 55, passed away December 15. He was an avid fisher, enjoyed gardening and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his father Luther McElhaney.
Survivors include his loving wife Carolyn McElhaney; daughters, Sandy McElhaney, Marion Parrish, Edith McElhaney, all of Michigan, Cindy Scogin, Pisgah, Ala.; son Timothy McElhaney, Michigan; sisters Ann McElhaney Hidgon, Huntsville, Ala., Betty Steele, Scottsboro, Ala., Jane McElhaney Dugus, Fyffe, Ala.; brothers Lloyd Stevenson McElhaney, Palm Bay, Fla., Ernest Carl McElhaney, Valley Head, Ala., Artis Eugene McElhaney, San Diego, Calif.; mother Madeline McElhaney; six step-children Sudie B. Smith, James A. Beason, Gary L. Beason, Audie M. Beason, Penny B. Johnson and Bryon G. Beason; eleven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday in the chapel of Moore Funeral Home with Brother Eddie Cantrell officiating.

JEAN SHULL
Jean Johnson Shull, 65, of Ider, Ala., passed away December 18, at her residence.
She was preceded in death by her parents Casey and Joyce Walker Johnson and a granddaughter.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Susan Shull, Chattanooga, Nathan and Karen Shull, Ider, Ala.; three daughters and son-in-law, Kathy and Cecil Daniel, Henagar, Ala., Tammy Sims and Angel Johnson, both of Ider, Ala.; brothers, Cohen Johnson, Bridgeport, Ala., Grail and Wayne Johnson, both of Ider, Ala., Kenneth Johnson, Cleveland, Tenn., David Johnson, Henagar, Ala., Gary Johnson, Rossville, Ga.; sisters, Brenda Pryor, Ider, Ala. And Gloria Lawson, Rossville, Ga.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on December 20 in the Kerby Chapel
Interment was in Adamsburg Cemetery.

RENE TINKER
Mrs. Rene Tinker, 87, of Pisgah, Ala, died on December 12, in Chattanooga. She was a member of Free Hill Baptist Church in Rosalie.
She preceded in death by her parents, William and Margaret Shrader Whisenant; husband, H. Ray Tinker; daughter, Madgeline Tinker; brothers, Robert, Hugh Boy and Earl D. and Harrison (Poss) Whisenant; sisters, Addie Carlton and Ruby Carson.
Survivors include sons, Ray Tinker, Jr. of Ringgold, Ga; Robert Wayne Tinker and Charles Edward Tinker both of Pisgah; daughters, Gaynell Day of Pisgah and Mildred Inez Brown of Section; sisters, Lucile Russel of Florida and Leola Shirey of Rainsville; step-brother, Clyde Sartin of Ider; ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on December 14 at the Kerby Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Garren and Rev. Watson Williams officiating.
Interment was in Pisgah Cemetery.

Octavie Sellers
Octavie Sellers of Covington, died May 22, 2009, at the age of 94. She enjoyed gardening, reading her Bible, and loved attending her churches, Jersey Holiness Church and Conyers Church of God. Most important to Mrs. Sellers was her love of God, and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ephraim Sellers; daughter, Ruth Sellers; sons, Boyce Ray Sellers, William Francis Sellers; grandchildren, Jonathan Sellers, Neal Glenn, Danny Sellers, Mark Smith; 1 sister; 4 brothers; and parents, Tombs and Quilla Bell Graham Bridges.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Sybil and Dan Smith of Carlton, GA, Angie and Wayne Hinton of Covington, Judy and Richard Youghn of Conyers; sons and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Lila Sellers of Soddy Daisy, TN, John Sellers of Lithonia; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Nell and George Pittard of Comer, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rudy and Sue Bridges of Madison, Hugh Dorsey and Rachel Bridges of Kannapolis, NC, Talmadge and Ann Bridges of Danielsville.

Stephanie Y. Brown
Stephanie Y. Brown, 52, of Covington, died May 6, 2009. She enjoyed flower gardening and taking care of her cats.

Carl Fasshauer, Jr.
Carl Albin Fasshauer, Jr., an accomplished cellist who served as manager of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra during the era of Sir George Solti and Carl Maria Giulini, has died at the age of eighty-four after a long illness.
Born in Chicago on April 21, 1925, Fasshauer attended LaneTechnicalHigh School, then known for its accomplished music program. Upon graduation, he was drafted into the US Army and served in combat during World War II. He took part in the battle for Guadalcanal as a member of the Amphibians, of the Americal Division attached to the First Marine Division. He was then reassigned as solo cellist with the New Zealand Royal Air Force Band.
After the war, Fasshauer studied cello in New York with Gregor Piatigorski and Emanuel Vardi and in Chicago with Frank Miller. In 1947, he studied music at Tanglewood. That experience led to an invitation to join the cello section of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
Fasshauer joined the Houston Symphony in 1954. In 1967, he was named that orchestra’s general manager. During these years, Fasshauer served under Leopold Stokowski, Sir John Barbirolli and Sir Andre’ Previn.
When Fasshauer was appointed manager of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in 1969, he returned to his home town, where his father, Carl Sr., had been concert manager of the NBC radio orchestra for decades.
Carl Fasshauer, Jr., served as manager of the Chicago Symphony until his retirement in 1982. In this capacity, he was involved in a variety of assignments, from arranging world tours to negotiating union contracts with the musicians. And working with the board of directors of the orchestra.
His interest in performing continued throughout his career. He was cellist for the Chicago production of “Gentlemen Prefer Blonds” with Carol Channing. He also toured with Robert Shaw.
After his retirement from the CSO in 1982, Fasshauer was consultant to the Birmingham (AL) Symphony, which he reorganized as the Alabama Symphony. He consulted for the Boca Pops, and formed a trio with Julian Stein and Norman Bauer.
In 1999, he married
Susan S. Braggiotti, a professional pianist and composer. The couple toured and recorded as the cello-piano duo “Partou”. Both also taught private lessons. Carl and Susan Fasshauer relocated to the Atlanta area in 2007.
In addition to his wife, Carl Fasshauer is survived by a sister, Jean Smith of Chicago, a son, Mark Fasshauer of Birmingham, AL, a stepdaughter, Stephanie Guttman of Tallahassee, FL, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His elder son, Carl Fasshauer III, preceded him in death.

Elizabeth Jeanette Capes
Elizabeth Jeanette Capes, of Oxford, died peacefully at her home, May 16, 2009, at the age of 75.
Daughter of the late Thomas and Pearl Henderson, she loved flower gardens and enjoyed going to yard sales. Mrs. Capes was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and will be dearly missed by all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene E. Capes, her daughter, Diana Capes Denney and two brothers, Bud Henderson and David Henderson.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Bobby and Tim Mock of Oxford, Toni and Rondey Williams of Covington, Lynn Capes of Covington, Tommy Denney of Oxford; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dee Burgess of Marietta, Edna Jett of Pickens, SC, Betty Tompkins of Myrtle Beach, SC; brother, Woodson Henderson of Columbia, SC; many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for Mrs. Capes will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2:00 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, with Rev. Wayne Rutherford officiating. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Rd, on Monday, May 18, from 5-8 PM. Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to help with funeral expenses.
Gladys Veale Harris
Gladys Veale Harris of Covington, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Abbey Hospice, surrounded by her loving family. She is preceded in death by her grandson, Douglas Stevens (Trae) Cash, III.
She is survived by her husband, Samuel (Neal) Harris of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Steve Cash, Susan Gilbert and Tim Huffstickler; sons, Bob Harris, Howard Harris, all of Covington; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Betty Walton of Forsyth, Howard and Joyce Walton of Roscoe, IL; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sue and Jim Worley of Covington, Marie and Tom Ussery of Jasper, GA; her most precious gifts, her grandchildren, Patrick Gilbert, Luke Gilbert, Kasey Cash, Hannah Cash, all of Covington; bonus family, Dawn, Marshall, Dusty, and Wesley Atha, Latrelle Cawthon, all of Covington; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Betty McIntosh of Covington, Lynn Ellington of Oxford, and her beloved pet, Rambo.

Ross Reeves
Ross Reeves of Social Circle, died May 22, 2009, at the age of 58. Son of the late Hubert Lee and Grace Evelyn Parker Reeves, he was a “people person”, who loved talking with his friends, watching Nascar racing, the Georgia Bulldogs, hunting, throwing horseshoes, and cooking on the grill. Mr. Reeves especially loved his grandchildren, Morgan and Melissa Reeves, Lillie Reeves,, Lyla Marie and Katie Lynn Parr.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Hester Reeves; daughter and son-in-law, Bridget and Wesley Parr of Social Circle; sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Donna Reeves, Jeremy and Tonya Reeves, all of Covington; 5 grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Phil Durand of Covington.
