Mrs. Evelyn R. Usry

THOMSON, Ga.- Mrs. Evelyn R. Usry, 84, widow of the late Jack Usry, entered into rest Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 at the residence.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Sweetwater Baptist Church. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

Survivors include four children, Jaclyn (Steve) Wukela, Florence, S.C., Kathleen Usry, David (Kay) Usry, Martinez, Ga., Danny (Theresa) Usry; six grandsons, Stephen (Laura) Wukela, Michael (Kelli) Wukela, John Wukela, Florence, S.C., J.D. Usry, Drew Usry, Martinez, Ga., Daniel Usry; a granddaughter, Christine Usry; and a great-grandson, Stephen Wukela, Jr., Florence, S.C. Mrs. Usry, daughter of the late J.D. and Grace Rucker, Hartwell, Ga., was born in Fulton County, Ga.

She was a long-time resident of McDuffie County. Mrs. Usry, a loving mother, was a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church where she was secretary for Sweetwater Baptist for over 30 years. 'Mrs. E' leaves a multitude who will cherish her memory.

Mr. Robert Bailey
Retired U.S. Army
MARTINEZ, Ga.- Mr. Robert Bailey, 73, passed away on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004 at his residence.
Funeral services were held at Platt's Funeral Home on Belair Road on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bryan Jeffcoat officiating. Burial with full military honors was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Bailey, a native of Erie, Pa., was the son of Irish Immigrants, the late Robert Bailey and Frieda Meiser Bailey. He had been a resident of the Augusta area for many years. Mr. Bailey was retired from the U.S. Army with more than 20 years service. A veteran of both Korean conflict, and Viet Nam, he earned several medals and accommodations including a Bronze Star. Mr. Bailey was Lutheran.

Survivors include, his beloved wife, Betty Collins Bailey. Other survivors also include, three devoted step-children, Ronnie Long and wife, Janice, of Appling, Mike Long and wife, Joyce, of Martinez, and Patricia Long Watts of Leesville, S.C. Loving grandchildren include Kathy Griffis, of Martinez, Donnie Watts, of Lexington, S.C., Leslie Wallace, of Dearing, Stephen Long on Greesboro, N.C. and Roddy Long and Booby Long of Martinez. Mr. Bailey also leaves eight cherished great-grandchildren, and a cousin, Bea Schriver of Hendersonville, N.C. In addition survivors also include several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Honorary pallbearers were Donnie Watts, Steven Long, Roddy Long, Bobby Long and Keith Griffis.

In lieu of flowers the family ask that memorials be made to St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Rd., Augusta, Ga. 30904.

Platt's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Deacon Joe Boyd
DEARING, Ga.- Funeral service for Deacon Joe Boyd of Hobbs Mill Road, Dearing, were held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Poplar Head Baptist Church of Christ in Dearing with Rev. David Lowe officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors are his devoted wife of 65 years, Mrs. Pennie L. Boyd of Dearing; children, Fran Boyd of Dearing, William (Barbara) Boyd of Dearing, Polly (Lawson) Hopkins, Sr. of Bronx, N.Y., Mary Boyd of Washington, D.C., Penny Boyd of Washington D.C., Pauline Boyd of Dearing; one brother, Frank Boyd of Springfield, Mass.; 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Thomson Funeral Systems was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Catherine Nell Carswell
Homemaker
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Miss Catherine Nell Carswell, 48, daughter of Vernell Peebles Carswell of Thomson, entered into rest Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Carswell.

Other survivors include her son, Jason Cates of Augusta, sisters, Caroline Hartfield of Thomson, Vivian DuBose of Hephzibah, and Elaine Marchant of Atlanta, brothers, Tony Carswell of Lawrenceville, James Carswell of Worth, Ill., Daryal Carswell of Modesto, Calif., and Tommy Santino of Beech Island, S.C.

Funeral services were private.

Mr. Garvin B. Chalker

GIBSON, Ga.- Mr. Garvin B. Chalker, 66, of Barford Road, entered into rest Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at the University Hospital, Augusta.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Carter Hudson and Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Chalker was a native of Glascock County where he was employed by the Georgia Forestry Commission for 29 years in Glascock and Jefferson counties before retiring. He was a member of the Glascock county Jaycees and he attended Fellowship Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mrs. Tannie Jo Chalker; three daughters, Wanda (Ronny) Wood of Gibson, Sherri (Sean) Epps of Thomson and Tyana (Ron) Martin of Harlem; two brothers, Calvin Chalker of Gibson and Don Chalker of Lincolnton; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Reese of Martinez and five grandchildren, Bobby and Jerry Wood, Haley and Casey Epps and Jared Martin.

Mr. Chalker was preceded in death by a brother, B.A. Chalker and two sisters, Edna Bowen and Margaret Thompson.

Pallbearers were Gregory Milburn, Joey Chalker, John Jones, Joe Dean Usry, Jerry Wood and Lee Griffin. Honorary pallbearers were employees of the Georgia Forestry Commission.

Memorials may be made to the Fellowship Baptist Church in Care of Mrs. Elsie Milburn, 712 Calhoun St., Gibson, Ga. 30810.

Mrs. Carolyn K. Cobb

BONEVILLE, Ga.- Mrs. Carolyn K. Cobb, 79, widow of Mr. J.W. Cobb, of Boneville Road, Boneville, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 at her residence.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Rev. Stanford Holsonback officiating.

Mrs. Cobb was a native of McDuffie County. She was a member of the Boneville United Methodist Church. She was a retired insurance agent, who in her latter years managed her farm and delighted in her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by Mr. Bill Bledsoe and Mr. J.W. Cobb.

She is survived by four daughters, Becky C. (Ken) Hughes, Boneville, Elizabeth B. (Tom) Walden, Hoschton, Martha B. (Barry) Hemphill, Thomson and Ann B. (Tony) McTier, Thomson; two sons, William Ike (Diane) Bledsoe, Eatonton and John N. (June) Bledsoe, Douglasville; a brother, O.J. Kaney, Jr., Warrenton; a sister, Martha Jones, Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren, Tracy Walden, Nathan Bledsoe, Stephanie Bledsoe, Whitney McTier and Kallie Hughes; and two care-givers, Nina Hart and Sheila Turman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boneville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 43, Boneville, GA 30806.

Mr. Darrick Dunn
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Funeral services for Mr. Darrick Dunn, 29, of Sanctuary Dr., who died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 were held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Olive Grove Baptist Church, Appling, Rev. Robert F. Leverett, pastor officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors are mother and stepfather, Mrs. Willette (Augustus) Dunn, Augusta; father, David Dunn, Lincolnton., Ga.; brother, Reginald Dunn, Sr. Augusta; sister, Tymeka (Germaine) Watkins, Edgefield, S.C.; paternal grandmother, Annie Dunn, Grovetown, Ga., two nephews, Reginald Dunn, Jr., Harlem and Davian Rowan, Augusta, Ga.; other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Mary Julia Thompson English
Retired School Teacher
THOMSON, Ga.- Mrs. Mary Julia Thompson English went to join her youngest and beloved daughter Louise English Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at the home of her oldest daughter, Helen J. Epps at Ginger Hill Road in Thomson.
Mrs. English resided at her home in Gibson up until the age of 84. She lived at Watson Manor in Thomson for four years where she celebrated her 88th birthday.

The oldest of three children of Nora Elizabeth Hogan and Charles Evans Thompson, Mrs. English is survived by her three daughters, Helen Epps of Thomson, Mary F.J. Threlkeld of Warner Robins, Ga., and Nancy J. Sammons of Coshocton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.

Mrs. English attended college in Spartanburg, S.C. and graduated with a BS in Education from Georgia State College in Milledgeville, Ga. She dedicated her life to serving children in the field of education. It was her calling, to love, guide, and inspire others to pursue knowledge and wisdom. She began teaching in the late thirties. Her educational career provided her the opportunity to teach in West Green, Bastonville, Gibson, Wrens, and as a principal at Edgehill. She retired after 40 years of dedicated service to the boys and girls of these communities. She thanked the Lord daily for his guidance and love. It was with his held she was able to travel life's way. Her membership in the First Baptist Church of Gibson helped her maintain her dedication to Christ Jesus as her Lord and Savior.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at the Gibson First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Interment was in the Gibson City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Charles Thompson, Bennette Williams, Joe Williams, Russell Davis, Lee Griffin, and Roy Black.

Mrs. Elvyn Pritchard Gunter
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga.- Mrs. Elvyn Pritchard Gunter died Jan. 28, 2004.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte Ivey, College Park, Nancy and Russell Kingston, Newnan, Catherine and Paul McLeroy, Flowery Branch, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Rita Gunter, Sharpsburg, Jerry and Marilyn Gunter, Tyrone; sisters, Leslie Gaither, Raleigh, N.C., Jean Looper, Cleveland, Tenn.; brother, Robert Pritchard, Severville, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Grethel Pritchard, Union City; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Chapel of Parrott Funeral Home with Pastor Kent Richards officiating. Interment services were held at 3 p.m. at Savannah Valley cemetery in Thomson.

Ms. Patty Jean Henderson
NORWOOD, Ga.- Ms. Patty Jean Henderson, 25 of North Cadley Rd., Norwood, Ga., entered into rest Jan. 26, 2004, at her residence.
Survivors include her son; James Richard Duff (J.R.) age 5, mother; Penny Arnold (Eddie), Thomson, brothers; Freddie Henderson, Ill. Wayne Henderson, Ill. Daniel Arnold, Thomson, sisters; Victoria Arnold, Thomson, maternal grandmother; Patricia Mayor (Joe), Waynesboro, grandfather; Jim Watson.

Patty was born in Marietta, Ga., but lived in the Warren, Glascock and McDuffie County area most of her life. She was also a 1997 graduate of Warren County High School and a member of First Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Allen Tillman and Loy Whitten officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jeremy Duncan, Freddie Henderson, Wayne Henderson, Daniel Henderson, Timothy Murphey and Eddie Arnold.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Johnny Johnson
GIBSON, Ga. - Mr. Johnny Johnson, 54, of Kitchens Road, entered into rest Jan. 29, 2004 at his residence.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at 11 a.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmie Richardson officiating. Interment was in Mitchell City Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson was employed with Glascock County for more than 23 years. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. & Mrs. Ray Johnson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 31 years, Barbara Johnson; one son, John Lee Johnson, Gibson; one daughter, Monica Rebecca Tedford, Dearing; three brothers, Billy Johnson, Tennille; Lewis Johnson, Warrenton; Raymond Johnson, Warrenton; one sister, Linda Searcy, Warrenton; and one special grandchild, Elizabeth Marie Tedford. Honorary Pallbearers were Glascock County Commissioners.

Pallbearers were Sheriff Bryan Bopp, Chuck Cason, Edward Shelton, Randy Dukes, John Waller, Don Finch, and Jeff Johnson.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mattie Mae Jones
THOMSON, Ga. - Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Mae Jones, 85 of Willow Street, Thomson, Ga. were held on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Cadley, Rev. Williams Wright, officiating, interment in the church cemetery.
Survivors are one son, Charlie Jones, four daughters, Louise Jones, Rose Sallywhite and Lucille Harris all of Thomson, Verna Green of Warrenton, Ga. two sisters, Louise Franklin, Thomson and Marie Cody of Camak, Ga. 27 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
