Mr. Paul Ashley

THOMSON, Ga.- Mr. Paul Ashley, 83, beloved husband of Mrs. Thelma Ashley, of Dixie Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 16, in the Thomson First Baptist Church with Dr. James C. Elder Jr. officiating. Burial was in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Ashley was a native of Anderson, S.C. but had lived in Thomson for many years. He was a retired Department Manager at Kingsley Mill. He was a Navy Veteran of W.W. II. He was a member of Thomson First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Ashley, Thomson; a daughter, Carolyn White, Savannah; a son, Jeff Ashley, Lincolnton; five grandchildren, Keith Ashley, Lacey Strait, Shawn Ashley, Ashley White, and Bob White, III; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Juanita Arflin, Anderson, S.C. and a brother, Wade Ashley, Anderson, S.C.

Pallbearers were Logan Marshall, William Swan, Ralph Starling, Barry Strait, and Bob White III.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Brittany Janae Cartledge
THOMSON, Ga.- Little Miss Brittany Janae Cartledge, age 9, of 320 Pecan Avenue, Thomson, entered into rest Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004 at her residence.
Brittany, a Richmond County native, was a member of First Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Winfield, Ga., where she was a member of Mt. Carmel Children's Ministry, Children's Bible Study, Youth Choir, and the F.M.C. Summer Prep Program. She was a 3rd grade student at J.A. Maxwell Elementary School, Thomson, Ga., where she participated in many school activities. She was an Honor Student, member of the Student Council, and has been selected as Student of the Month. She was a MAX Reader for the year 2003 and for obtaining that goal, she was awarded a visit to the office of Thomson Mayor Bob Knox and received the City of Thomson pin. She became a Citizen Reader for 2002-2003. During 2003-2004 she became a Council Reader and a Citizen Reader. She was a member of the Boys and Girls Club of Thomson where she sang in the choir. She enjoyed sports and participated with the McDuffie County Recreation Department as a cheerleader and softball player.

Survivors include her mother, Mildred Sherry Cartledge, of Thomson; father and step-mother, Stanley (Fiona) Johnson, Sr., of Thomson; four sisters, Aciandra Ivey of Atlanta, Macy Johnson of Martinez, Kaleyah Cowins of Thomson, and Betenna Johnson of Warrenton; six brothers, Octavious Johnson and Stanley Johnson, Jr., both of Warrenton, Sherrod Castleberry, Qudrea Castleberry, both of Martinez, Jalen Johnson and Jarius Johnson both of Thomson; grandmothers, Barbara J. Cartledge of Thomson and Bertha Morfort of Warrenton; grandfather, Melvin Bolton, of Warrenton; great-grandmother, Mrs. Queen E. Lewis, Thomson; two uncles, three aunts, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at 2 p.m. with the pastor Rev. Roscoe Perry officiating at First Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Crawford-Pinkston-Roberts Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Claude Elam
THOMSON, Ga.- Mr. Claude Elam of Thomson, Ga. passed away Tuesday, January 13.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at 1 p.m. Pleasant Grove CME Church with Rev. John Smalley, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

His survivors include two sisters, Susie Freeman of Lincolnton, Ga. and Naomi Andrews of Atlanta, Ga.; four brothers, Thomas Banks of Augusta, John Elam of Woodstock, Ga., Eugene Elam, Roger Elam and Ellis Elam all of Lincolnton, Ga.

Wright and Jones Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Irene Kelley Luke
AUGUSTA, Ga.- Mrs. Irene Kelley Luke, 82, of Augusta, entered into rest Jan. 15, 2004 at University Hospital.
She was the beloved wife of the late John Howard Luke. She is preceded in death by her parents, the late Julian Lee Kelley and the late Amy Daughtry Kelley and her son, Ronald Howard Luke.

She is survived by her son, Marvin L. (Rachel) Luke, Sr, of Grovetown; her daughter, Ellen L. (Dale) Hutto of Harlem; seven grandchildren, Marvin Lewis Luke, Jr., Stephen Luke, Renee Page, Bobby Hutto, Brandon Hutto, Lee Luke, Christina Luke; and 8 great-grandchildren, Morgan Luke, Ashlyn Luke, Lauren Luke, Nicholas Luke, Bethany Luke, London Luke, Jordan Page and Shiannah Hutto.

Mrs. Luke was born in McDuffie County, Georgia but had lived in Augusta most of her life. She graduated from Thomson High School. She was a homemaker and a member of Sherwood Baptist Church in Augusta.

Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sonny Serigney officiating. Graveside services at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Bobby Hutto, Lee Luke, Lewis Luke, Stephen Luke, Ricky Malin, Tim Malin and William Page.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Katherine Hinton Wisham
THOMSON, Ga.- Mrs. Katherine Hinton Wisham, age 85, of Thomson, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004 in the Birmingham Nursing and Rehab Center East, in Birmingham, Ala.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 at Sweetwater Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Garvin officiating. Burial followed in the Westview Cemetery.

She was a native of Thomson, but had been living in Birmingham, Ala. for the last 3 1/2 years. She was a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church and also enjoyed many church services at Birmingham Nursing and Rehab Center East. She retired from Thomson Company.

She was preceded in death by her husband, N. Robert Wisham; parents, Elias M. and Ethel Mae Young Hinton; brother, Hoyt Milton Hinton.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sybil S. and Gerald T. (Jerry) Lewis; grandsons, Gerald T. Lewis, Jr., Tommy and Lynn Lewis, Timothy Mark and Regina Lewis; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Will, Victoria, and Bryce Lewis; a br other and sister-in-law, Bobby W. and Kathryn Hinton; nephews, Gregory M. and Martin J. Hinton; nieces, Kathy Hinton Westbrook and Vic and their two children, Lynn and Clay Westbrook.

Mrs. Kathryn W. Heffernan

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, Mrs. Kathryn W. Heffernan, 79, retired real estate broker.
Mrs. Heffernan was a Presbyterian and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star had been a Cub Scott Den Mother in Thomson.

Family members are her sons, Randall W. Cowart and Joseph C. Cowart of Augusta; grandchildren, R. Scott Cowart, R. Wheeler Cowart, Jr., Adam H. Cowart, Joseph W. Cowart, Jason P. Cowart, Chris D. Douglas, Emily L. Douglas and Daniel E. Douglas; brother, Thomas J. Wheeler, Jr., of Barrington, RI and sister, Anne W. Archer of Sparta, Ga.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the graveside in Westover Memorial Park with Dr. Steve Hurte officiating.

Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Earl Burnett
AUGUSTA, Ga.- Funeral services for Mr. Earl Burnett, 92, of Kennedy Dr., Augusta, were held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the graveside of the Jones Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Thomson. Rev. Clifton Edwards, Jr. officiating.
Survivors are a very loving devoted and special friend, Ms. Alberta Gregory, Augusta; a devoted cousin, Ms. Earnestine Tucker, Augusta, and a host of other nieces, nephews, and friends.

Thomson Funeral System, Thomson, was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Willie Thomas Cason
THOMSON, Ga.- Funeral services for Mr. Willie Thomas Cason, 54, of Atlanta, were be held on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Brinkley Chapel Baptist Church, Thomson with the Rev. W.R. Ferrell, officiating. Interment was in the churchyard cemetery.
Survivors include a loving daughter, Taura Cason; two step-daughters, Crystal and Ashley McCrory; a loving mother, Onnie M. Cason, Thomson; three brothers, John Cason of Thomson, Douglas Cason of Fitchburg, Mass., and Neal Cason of Hamilton, Penn.; four sisters, Christine Lane, Louisville, Ga., Cynthia Hobbs, Fitchburg, Mass., Ruth Neal, Thomson, and Daisy Friend, Chicago, Ill.; a devoted friend, Marie McCrory; other relatives and friends.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pauline K. Simons

THOMSON, Ga.- Mrs. Pauline K. Simons, 96, widow of Mr. Hubert L. Simons, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 at her residence.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 20th, in the Fort Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Phil Bray and Rev. Boyd Reeves officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Simons was a native of McDuffie County. She was retired from the Thomson Company and was a homemaker. She was a member of Fort Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Kelly Wood, Thomson; two grandchildren, Jimmy Wood and Kay Wood Faircloth; a great-grandson, Brandon Faircloth; a niece, Shirley K. Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews and numerous great- nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were active deacons at Fort Creek Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers were the Women's Sunday School Class.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Fort Creek cemetery Fund.

Miss Mattie Beall Oxford

DEARING, Ga.- Miss Mattie Beall Oxford, 85, of Iron Hill Road entered into rest Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Warrenton Health and Rehabilitation Center, Warrenton, Ga. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Mineral Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Phil Bray and Rev. Boyd Reeves officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Miss Oxford was a native of Washington County but lived in Glascock County around the Mitchell area most of her life. She was a member of Fort Creek Baptist Church. Aunt Mat was a very loving and devoted person, she loved her Lord and was faithful to her church and Jesus Christ. She also loved her family very much.

Her survivors are two sisters, Mary V. Denton and Betty Chalker both of Gibson, she had a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbeares were Ronnie Chalker, Jimmy Reddick, Cody Reddick, Tommy Cope, Russell Tharpe and Tommy Yarbrough. Honorary Pallbearers were Harvey Pearson, Kenneth Huff, Kenneth Reeves, Donnie Jones and Barry Brassell.

Sheppard Funeral Home of Gibson was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Andrew Boyd "Jack" Lake, Jr.
LINCOLNTON, Ga. - Mr. Andrew Boyd 'Jack' Lake Jr., 84, of McCormick Highway entered into rest Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at University Hospital.
Mr. Lake was the son of the late Andrew Boyd Lake, Sr., and the late Julia Blair Lake.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Lincolnton United Methodist Church with the Revs. John W. Pike, Jr. and Donald Clark officiating. Interment in the Lincolnton City Cemetery.

Mr. Lake, a native of Newberry, S.C., honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. After his tour of duty, he moved to Lincoln County in 1946 and resided there until present.

He was president of Piedmont Wood Company, a member of the Georgia and South Carolina Forestry Association, American Legion Post # 194, Lincolnton United Methodist Church and the Men's Club of the Church.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Amos F. Lake; one son, Eugene Boyd Lake, of Thomson; two daughters, Betty L. Pinson of Martinez and Beverly L. Abbott of Columbia; one brother, Ryan B. Lake of Ridgeway, S.C.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Richard Butler, Nathan Heyward, Andrew B. Lake, III, Matthew Lake, and Andrew Pinson. Honorary pallbearers were the Men's Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lincolnton United Methodist Church Van Ministry, P.O. Box 85, Lincolnton, Ga. 30817.

Mrs. Ruby F. Shelton
ELIZABETHTON, TN - Ruby Frances Shelton, 80, formerly of 222 Hardin Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004 at Pine Ridge Care Center following an extended illness.
Mrs. Shelton was a native of Washington County and had lived in Carter County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Eli and Bertha Brummitt Trivett and was also preceded in death by four sisters, Ethel Trivett, Nell Melenson, Ella Mae Gee and Maude Trivett, and two brothers, Elbert Trivett and C.B. Trivett.

Mrs. Shelton was of the Baptist faith and retired from Holiday Inn in Johnson City in Housekeeping.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Charlie L. Shelton, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Ron Langham, Riverdale, Ga.; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Raymond and Cassie Shelton, Jonesboro, Ga., Roy Lee Shelton, Gary Dean and Sherry Shelton, and Bobby Gene Shelton and his fiancee, Roberta Hardin, all of Elizabethton; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Eli "Sonny" Trivett Jr., Thomson, Ga.; and two sisters, Margaret Smith, of Florida, and Pat Yates, Alexandria, Va. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services were held Monday, Jan. 5, at Blevins cemetery with the Rev. D.C. Byrd officiating.

Active pallbearers were Robert Shelton, David Shelton, Michael Shelton and Danny Tanner. Honorary pallbearers were the nursing staff of Pine Ridge Care Center, Bill and Evelyn Ward, Dr. Stephen May and Dr. George Kehler.

Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Carter County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 682, Elizabethton, TN 37644.
