Mr. Albert E. "Gene" Wells

THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Albert E. "Gene" Wells, 70, of Thomson, entered into rest Thursday March 13, 2008, at University Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Betty H. Wells and was married to the late Reesie Wells for 43 years.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 17, 2008, at Second Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Drawdy officiating.

Pallbearers were members of the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department.

Mr. Wells was born in Marianna, Fla., and was the son of the late Dewey Wells and the late Norma Sasser Wells. He attended Florida University and served in the U.S. Marines. Mr. Wells worked as a Law and Criminal Investigator with the U.S. Department of Customs and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. He worked as a deputy and investigator for McDuffie County Sheriff's Department for several years and served as McDuffie County Probate Judge for 18 years. Mr. Wells served as a bailiff for Warren and McDuffie Counties. He was also a member of Second Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife: Betty H. Wells, Thomson; sons: Tom Wells and his wife, Krista, Thomson, Steve Wells and his wife, Tracy, Dearing; brother: Donald Wells, Dothan, Ala.; grandchildren: Hollis, Brittany, Kate, Tommy and Victoria Wells.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Memorials.

Mr. Parrish Mitchell Allen

LINCOLNTON, Ga. - Mr. Parrish Mitchell Allen, 46, of Lincolnton, passed away Friday, January 25, 2008, in Elbert County due to a car accident.

His funeral services were held Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. at White Rock Baptist Church with Rev. Seymour Harris officiating and Pastor. The burial was at church cemetery.

His survivors include a wife, Mary Lois Allen of Lincolnton; a son, Marcus Allen of Elberton, Ga.; four step-children, Shelia Green, Alton McCord, both of Lincolnton, Emma McCord of Greenwood, S.C., and Sable Davis of Thomson; two sisters, Pe'Cola Huff of Milledgeville, Ga., and Ternee Huff of Elberton, Ga.; four brothers, Oslen Huff, Harold Huff, both of Elberton, Ga., Marvin Huff of Lawrenceville, Ga., and William Huff of Forest Park, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

DEARING, Ga. - Miss Nancy Vinson, 45, entered into rest April 11, 2008, at Doctors Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 13, 2008, at the Dearing United Methodist Church with Revs. Key Kernaghan and Stan Holsenback officiating. Interment followed in the Dearing Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tony Bowman, Lloyd Axon, Jeff Welch, Don Clements, Kenny May and Barry Taylor. Honorary Pallbearers were employees of Thomson Middle School.

Miss Vinson was a lifelong resident McDuffie County. She was a Paraprofessional at Thomson Middle School for many years. Miss Vinson was also a member of Dearing United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her father, Willard "Bill" Vinson, Dearing; brothers, James Willard Vinson, Ochlouchee, Ga., David Carlton Vinson, Dearing, Alex Vinson, Hiram, Ga.; a sister, Jerrett Ann Stiner, Republic, Penn.

Miss Vinson was preceded in death by her mother Effie Helen Vinson.

Mrs. Barbara Cowins Hixson

THOMSON, Ga. - Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Cowins Hixson, 66, of Thomson, were held on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Springfield Baptist Church with the Rev. F. D. Favors officiating. Interment was in Sandy Grove A.M.E. Church cemetery in Warrenton.

Survivors are: three daughters, Kim Steed of Conyers, Ga., Yolanda (Dewayne) Sinkfield and Sylvia Hixson, all of Thomson; two stepdaughters, Cheryl (Shawn) Lucas and June Lucas, all of Thomson; two goddaughters, Renee (Nathaniel) Jones and Wanda Belton, all of Thomson; one sister, Thelma (Leroy) Roberts of Thomson; three brothers, Herman, Jr. (Joyce) Cowins, Roy Melvin (Catherine) Cowins, all of Thomson, and Rev. Roy Milton (Betty) Cowins of Tulsa, Ok.; one aunt, Daisy (Wade) Howard of Decatur, Ga.; one uncle, James (Jessie) Rogers of Atlanta; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

Mr. Henry H. Burley

NORWOOD, Ga. -Mr. Henry H. Burley, of Norwood, died March 27, 2008 at the McDuffie Regional Hospital in Thomson.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 5, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Andrew Chapel C.M.E. Church, Norwood, Ga., Rev. Sarah Cooper and Rev. George Ivey officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include Mr. Eddie L. Lowe, Mr. Willie L. Burley, and Mrs. Mary F. Cody, Atlanta, Mrs. Annie R. Byrd, Mr. Willie B. Burley, Ms. Elizabeth Burley, Norwood, and Ms. Barbara Burley, Washington; 56 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers; other relatives and friends.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Mrs. Nan Howell Ray, 79, of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Warrenton, entered into rest March 2, 2008, at her residence.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Sallie Hill cemetery in Warrenton with Rev. Jeanette Purvis officiating.

Mrs. Ray was born in Waycross, Ga. and was the daughter of the late Wendell Howell and the late Alma Taylor Howell. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Warrenton.

Survivors include a son: Charlie Ray, Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchild: Melinda Berber-Ray, Germany. She was preceded in death by her son William Michael Ray.

THOMSON, Ga, - Funeral service for Mr. Johnny Lee Hill, 54, of Thomson, was held on Sunday, May 4, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Vanderhorst C.M.E. Church, Thomson, with Rev. John W. Smalley officiating. Interment was in William Hill Memorial Gardens in Thomson.

Survivors include wife, Mary D. Hill, Thomson; son, Joseph (Tonya) Battle, Augusta; two stepsons, Michael Taylor & Johnny Battle, both of Thomson; 2 stepdaughters, Katenia Battle, Thomson, & Tara Taylor, Washington; mother, Flora (Jerodus, Sr.) Allen, Thomson; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Jerodus Allen, Jr., Thomson, and John Hardin, Harlem; two sisters, Annette H. White and Janie Butler, both of Thomson; three aunts, one uncle, nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives & friends.

THOMSON, Ga. - The funeral service for Mrs. Bridie Reese Moss Jive, 70, of Thomson, was held on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at noon at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Dearing, with the Rev. Luther Rogers officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Willie M. Few, Thomson; a son, Clarence (Sarah) Moss, Thomson; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a special cousin, John B. Moss; a special friend, Louise Crawford; a special son, Billy F. Cartledge; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other friends and relatives.

EDISON, N.J. - A homecoming celebration for Mr. Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Gibson, 69, of Edison, NJ, was held on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at noon, at the United House of Prayer for all People, Dearing, with the Pastor Elder W. Patrick Scott officiating. Interment was in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens in Thomson.

Survivors: two sons, Glenn Gibson, Plainsfield, NJ, and Terrence Gibson, Rahway, NJ; three daughters, Sheila (James) Hill, Thomson, Sharon Gibson, Linden, NJ, and Kim Gibson, Edison, NJ; one brother, Bobby Gibson, Newark, NJ; two sisters, Hattie Stapleton, Thomson, and Ann (Ruben) Sullivan, Augusta; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Sybil Edmunds Brantley, 61, beloved wife of Mr. Harold Brantley, died Monday, March 6, 2006 in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2006 in the Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Patrick DeVane and Rev. Butch Baston officiating. Burial will follow in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Deacon V.E. Calhoun, Retired Farmer

THOMSON, Ga. -Deacon V.E. Calhoun, 99, entered into rest Thursday, April 3, 2008, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, April 7, 2008, at Springfield Baptist Church, with Rev Mark A. Downs officiating and Rev Sylvester Nabritt serving as Eulogist. Interment was at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his son Wayne Calhoun Sr., Thomson; five grandchildren; Anvenitra (Raymond, Jr.) Parker, Wayne Calhoun, Jr., Yvonka Calhoun, and Tai Calhoun all of Thomson, and Sarmona Clay, Augusta; special devoted niece, Lucille Morris, Atlanta, and special care giver Laverne Davis, of Thomson; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Brian Allen Willis, 26, of Thomson, entered into rest March 1, 2008, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Holbrook officiating. Interment followed in Westview Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Pete Paulson, L.J. Fernandez, Cole Gray, Don Ray, Wayne Wilkerson, Robert Whitfield, Zach Norris and Ivan Crawford.

Mr. Willis was born in Augusta, but lived in Thomson for many years. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. The family said that he enjoyed archery, hunting , fishing, horseback riding, singing and playing guitar.

Survivors include his parents: Chuck and Kay Whitener Willis, Thomson; sister: Valerie Willis Hackenberry and her husband Patrick, Thomson; nephews: Jacob and Johnston Hackenberry; maternal grandmother: June Whitener, Augusta; paternal grandmother: LouEllen Willis, Augusta; paternal great- grandmother: Lula Johnston, Augusta, GA. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Charles E. Willis and his maternal grandfather, Charlie Whitener.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church 1424 Cobbham Rd. Thomson, GA 30824.

THOMSON, Ga. - Funeral services for Mr. Jessie Denson, 51, of Thomson, were held on Saturday, February 2, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Thomson Funeral System Chapel.

Mr. Vondall Lee Hall

Mr. Vondall Lee Hall, 73, of Dearing, entered into rest March 27, 2008. He was the beloved husband of the late Miriam Frances Hall.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 31, 2008, at the Mesena United Methodist Church with Revs. Pete Strals, Sue Meehan and Buddy Morris officiating. Interment followed in Mesena United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Georgia Southern College Alumni.

Mr. Hall was born in Melvin, Ky., and was the son of the late George Hall and the late Pricie Cole Hall. He graduated Georgia Teachers' College in 1957 and pitched baseball for the GTC Eagles. Mr. Hall was the Georgia High School Coach of the Year in 1967. For many years, he was a golf coach for the McDuffie County Recreation Department Youth Golf Program. He was an advocate for handicapped children and began the Kicklighter Rehabilitation Center in Savannah. Mr. Hall was also a member of Mesena United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife Miriam Frances Hall.

Survivors include: sons: Dee Hall, Lawrenceville, Ga.; daughter: Kim Cheely, Thomson, and grandchildren: Lance Cheely and Whitney Hall.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Von Hall Memorial Fund for Thomson-McDuffie Rec. Dept Youth Golf Program, 337 Main Street, Thomson, GA 30824.
