Mrs. Mary N. McTier

THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Mary N. McTier, 83, widow of Mr. Hershel McTier, died Thursday, January 10, 2008, in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 13, in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bobby Farmer officiating.

Mrs. McTier was a native of Glascock County, but had lived in Thomson for many years. She had retired from Uniroyal.

Survivors include her daughters, Imo Clemenes, Thomson; Mylan Betounes, Valdosta; two sons, Wally Redfern, Thomson; Mickey Redfern, N. Charleston S.C.; five sisters, one brother, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Kids Wish Network, McDuffie County / GA Campaign, C/O National Gift Processing Center, P.O. 17217 Indianapolis, IN 46217-0217.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Clennice Fellers
GAINSVILLE, Ga. - Entered into rest Friday, July 21, 2006, in Gainesville, Ga., Mrs. Clennice Usry Fellers, wife of Ernest E. (Bo) Fellers, Jr. of Gainesville, formerly of Augusta.

Mrs. Fellers was a native of Glascock County, and had resided in Augusta all of her life, until the last year when she lived in Gainesville, Ga. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Augusta.

Family members in addition to her husband include her sons and daughters-in-law: Ernest E. Fellers III and Eleene Fellers of Gainesville, Ga., Richard H. Fellers and Kay Fellers of Thomson, and grandchildren: Lauren Fellers, Sharon Fellers and Ashley Fellers.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 24, 2006, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Augusta with Dr. Rodger Murchison officiating. Interment followed in Westover Memorial Park.

The family request in lieu of flowers that memorials be made in honor of Lauren Kay Fellers to Respite Care Fund, c/o Queensborough National Bank and Trust, PO Box 190, Thomson, GA 30824 or the First Baptist Church of Gainesville, Green St., Gainesville, GA 30501.

Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Debra Elaine Welch
Retired school bus driver
HARLEM, Ga. - Mrs. Debra Elaine Welch, 50, wife of Mr. Julian Welch, entered into rest on Friday, July 20, 2007.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 22, 2007, at 3 p.m., at Powell Baptist Church with the Rev. Randall Whitaker officiating. Interment was in Harlem Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Welch, a native of Richmond County, was a retired school bus driver for Columbia County Board of Education.

Survivors include her husband Julian Welch; two sons, Michael and (Dawn) Welch, Grovetown, and Travis (Monica) Welch, Martinez; one brother Mickey (Denese) Wheeler, Harlem; one sister Daisy (Buck) Ansley, Dearing; eight grandchildren, Blake Welch, Savannah Welch, Tristan Smith, Logan Welch, Evan Welch, Kaitlin Welch, Alexia Dodgen, and Christopher Williams.

Pallbearers were Phillip Welch, Pat Reese, Andy Johnson, Donnie Thomas, Steven Usry, and Scottie Willcow. Honorary pallbearers were CSRA Express Softball Team.

If so desired, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2623 Washington Road, Augusta, Georgia 30904 or Heartland Hospice Services, 1365 Interstate Pkwy, Augusta, Georgia 30909.

Mrs. Thelma Reese Langham
Retired waitress
THOMSON, Ga. - Mrs. Thelma Reese Langham,96, of Ridge Road, widow of Mr. Bunyan T. Langham, died Saturday, July 16, 2005 at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2005 in the Washington Heights Baptist Church with Rev. D.L. Sonny Peevy officiating. Burial followed in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Wallace Langham, James Langham, Larry Lendman, Buford Lambert, Lynn Thigpen, Walley Thigpen, George Thigpen and Ronnie Newman.

Mrs. Langham was born February 23, 1909 in Warren County, a daughter of the late J.O. and Theloa Duckworth Reese. She was a homemaker and for several years, worked at a waitress at Rachel's Cafe and Michael's Restaurant. She was a member of Washington Heights Baptist Church for more than 45 years. She was a loving wife and godly mother.

Mrs. Langham was preceded in death by her husband, Bunyan T. Langham; five brothers, Harvey Reese, Earl Reese, G.T. Reese, Pilcher Reese and Leon Reese; a sister, Reba Reese; and a grandson, J.L. Lambert.

She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Blanche Lambert of Warner Robbins, and Waistel and Clemon Thigpen of Thomson; three sons and daughters-in-law, J.W. and Annie Mae Langham of Franklin, Ala., Bunyan T. and Mary Langham, Jr. of Thomson, and Reese B. and Jean Langham of Thomson; four sisters and brother-in-law, Bertha Cheely of Naples, Fla., Kitty Newsome of Coco Beach, Fla., Polly Woodruff of Sardis, and Mary and John Culbreath of Union Point; two sisters-in-law, Edith Reese of Cadley, and Mable Reese of Camak; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, seven great- great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1899 Central Ave., Augusta, GA 30904.

Mr. Levie Jackson
THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Levie Jackson, of Thomson, entered into rest Sunday, July 9, 2006 at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

He is survived by his children, Ms. Virginia Jackson, Ms. Barbara Ann Jackson and Mr. Larry Jackson, all of Augusta, Mrs. Ethel (Willie) Mance and Ms. Minnie Jackson of Wrens and Mrs. Mary (J.J.) Smith of Atlanta.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 15, 2006, 1 p.m. at Mt. Aldred C.M.E. Church.

Mrs. Byrnece Purcell Knox Swanson
Distinguished Artist
EVANS, Ga.- Mrs. Byrnece Purcell Knox Swanson, died at Brandon Wilde on July 9, 2004.
She was born May 3, 1912, in Metter, Candler County, Ga., where her father, Thomas Malcolm Purcell, organized the public schools. She spent most of her early years in Cochran, Ga., where her father was principal of the Cochran city schools.

Mrs. Swanson was educated at the University of Georgia, graduating with a B.A. in art in 1933.

Following graduation from college, she moved to Thomson, Ga., to teach school and later married Wyckliffe A. Knox of Thomson.

She and Mr. Knox had a daughter, Harriet, who predeceased her mother, and a son, Wyckliffe A. Knox, Jr.; of Augusta. Mrs. Swanson was a homemaker and a distinguished artist. Her paintings, using all mediums, were widely enjoyed by friends and family. She also painted china and in later years developed expertise in portraitures.

She was also active in the Thomson community, the First Methodist Church, and the Girl Scouts. She was the first president, in 1939, of the Garden Study Club in Thomson.

Following the death of Mr. Knox, she married Denver W. Swanson of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., who had settled there following his retirement from St. Paul Insurance Companies. She and Mr. Swanson enjoyed many years of happiness prior to his death.

Mrs. Swanson is survived by her son; one stepdaughter, Sandra Swanson Hammer of Dedham, Massachusetts; seven grandchildren and three step grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, July 11, 2004, at 4 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 353 Main Street, Thomson, Ga., with burial in the Knox family plot, Westview Cemetery, Thomson.

Pallbearers were Boone A. Knox, W.L. (Larry) Knox, Robert E. Knox, Jr., Dr. John Charles Knox, Charles Edward Knox, Donald T. McNeill, Jr.

Mr. Harold F. Newsome
HARLEM, Ga. - Mr. Harold F. Newsome, 77, entered into rest Monday, July 10, 2006 at University Hospital.

Harold was born in Warren County. He was the son of the late Willis Newsome and Ruby Newsome of Thomson.

Funeral services were held Thursday July 13, 2006 at 10 a.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Wayne McDaniel officiating. Burial followed at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Harold was proprietor of Newsome's Barbershop for more than 40 years in Harlem, Ga. and he was a beloved member of the Community. Harold was an avid gardener and fisherman and known for his generosity with his home grown vegetables and fresh fish.

Mr. Harold is survived by his loving and devoted wife Eva Kitchens Newsome. They would have celebrated 29 years of marriage this Saturday July 15, 2006. He was the father of two daughters, Vickie (Ken) Richardson, of Harlem, and Mickey Huffman of New Ellenton, S.C. Left to cherish his memory are six grandchildren, Len Payne, Randy (Farrah) Payne, Brett (Crystal) Huffman, Daniel Huffman, Lori Britton and David Huffman; seven great grandchildren, Shayla Britton, Savannah Huffman, J T Huffman, Ava Glisson, Jalean Britton, Tucker Payne and Calvin Britton; seven brothers, Willis (Fraces Ann) Newsome, Jay Newsome, Hodges (Corine) Newsome, Chick Newsome, Edward (Marjorie) Newsome, Wallace (Patsy) Newsome, Donald Newsome and devoted family friend, Martha Brown.

Pallbearers were his long time friends, Bill Barron, Paschall Price, Hal Keller, Larry Maynard, Len Reeves, Jack Addison, Jimmy Wilcher, Billy Neal, Wayne Higdon and Joe Wheeler.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rosa Lee Beard Jackson
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Rosa Lee Beard Jackson, of Roosevelt Dr., entered into rest Thursday, July 7, 2005 at the University Hospital.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at 1 p.m. at the First Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with Rev. Andrew Johnson officiating. Burial was at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, Evans.

Mrs. Jackson was a native of Columbia County and a member of the First Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.

Survivors are one daughter, Barbara Beasley, Augusta; one son, James Jackson, Thomson; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a host of cousins and other relatives.

Williams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Lee Lewis Kirby

HARLEM, Ga. - Mrs. Mary Lee Lewis Kirby, 55, entered into rest at her residence.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2007 in the Adams Chapel cemetery with the Dr. Ronald Young officiating.

Mrs. Kirby was a native of Louisville and a retired factory worker.

Survivors include one stepson, Billy Kirby of Dearing; and three brothers, George (Deleita) Lewis, Eugene (Brenda) Lewis, both of Dearing, Jerry (Lisa) Lewis of Warrenton; one sister, Martha (Ray) Parish, Dearing. Additional survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Mr. John R. Murray

THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. John R. Murray, 63, beloved husband of Mrs. Jean Murray, died Saturday, July 21, 2007, in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were held 10 am Monday, July 23, in the Faith Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Murray was a native of Banks County, but had lived in Thomson for many years. He was a retired brick mason.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Murray, Thomson; his son, Travis Murray, N. Augusta, S.C.; his two grandsons, Justin Murray and Joseph Murray; five sisters, Lucille Blakey and JoAnne Barden, both of Lincolnton, Nancy Langham, Thomson, Hope Looper and Bobbie Looper, both of Augusta; and his brother, Swain Murray.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lynda Carol Burgess Malpass

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Lynda Carol Burgess Malpass, wife of Mr. James (Jim) T. Malpass, III, entered into rest Sunday, July 16, 2006 at her residence.

Graveside services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Mt. Olive Memorial Gardens with Rev. Robert Eick officiating.

Mrs. Malpass was a native of Augusta and a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Dennis and Anna Belle Bryant Burgess.

Additional survivors include; one son James (Jimmy) T. Malpass IV of Augusta, three brothers and sisters-in-law; Richard and Emily Mercer of Warrenville, SC, Michael and Kay Burgess of Martinez, William and Kathy Burgess of St. Louis, Mo, two sisters and brother-in-law, Sandra Evans of Augusta, Pat and Bob Eick of Thomson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hatcher, Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Eliza Lue Cartledge
WARRENTON, Ga. - Funeral services for Mrs. Eliza Lue Cartledge, 90, of Warrenton, were held on Saturday, July 16, 2005 at 1 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, Cadley, Rev. J.W. Howard officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors are four sisters, Mrs. Eula M. Berry and Ms. Fronie Franklin, both of Warrenton, Mrs. Mae Lizzie Berry and Mrs. Pansy Moss, both of Norwood; two brothers, Mr. Richard Lester Griffin of Thomson, and Mr. Robert Franklin of Warrenton; other relatives and friends.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.
