Lenora Jackson Poole, 79

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Lenora Jackson Poole, 79, was held Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at 4 p.m., at St. Philip Baptist Church with Pastor James E. Love officiating. Burial was in the Swainsboro City Cemetery.
She died at Emanuel Medical Center after an extended illness.
Mrs. Poole was a native and lifelong resident of Emanuel County where she attended public schools and was a member of St. Philip Baptist Church of Swainsboro.
Survivors include one son, Johnny Poole of Newark, N.J.; four daughters, Dora Moore, Mary Wadley, Geraldine Jones, all of Swainsboro, and Annie Mae Bryant of Patterson, N.J.; two sisters, Eloise Williams of Baltimore, Md. and Jessie B. Hodges of Cross-Green community; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Pearl Wilson Johnson, 94

GARFIELD--Funeral for Pearl Wilson Johnson, 94, was held Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Hebron Primitive Baptist Church. Elder Tommy Rountree officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
She died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Tatnall Community Hospital in Reidsville after an extended illness.
Mrs. Johnson was a native of Johnson County and lived in Garfield before moving to Reidsville to live with her son, Winton, for several years. She worked for Oxford Industries in Millen and at Swainsboro Sportswear. She was also a homemaker and the oldest living member of Hebron Primitive Baptist Church. The late Otis L. Johnson Sr. was her husband.
Survivors include three sons, Otis L. Johnson Jr. of Good Hope, Winton L. Johnson of Reidsville and Billy Edward Johnson of Swainsboro; one sister, Gladys Lamb of Twin City; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Womack, Jerry Johnson, William Riner, Larry Wilson, Lawrence Perkins and Ricky Williams.
Honorary escorts were deacons of Hebron Primitive Baptist Church.
Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Henry C. "Babe" Todd, 81

CLAXTON--Funeral for Henry C. "Babe" Todd, 81, was held Friday, August 16, 2002, at 3 p.m. at the J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. David Hagan and Elder Jimmy Haire officiated. Burial followed in Brewton cemetery in Hagan.
He died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at Carl Vinson VA Hospital in Dublin after a short illness.
An Evans County native, Mr. Todd was a member of Hagan Baptist Church, veteran of World War II, former Hagan Police officer and retired school bus driver.
Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Todd and Benny Todd of Hagan; two daughters, Judy Johns of Twin City and Sybil Lanier of Nevils; three sisters, Dolly Todd of Glennville, Pete Holland of Sevierville, Tenn. and Doris Sapp of Hagan; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Ruby J. Parker, 94

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA.--Funeral for Ruby J. Parker will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, 11 a.m. at Hebron Primitive Baptist Church in Garfield. Elder Tommy Rountree will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002 at Carrington Place Convalescent Center in St. Petersburg.
Mrs. Parker was born in Garfield. She later moved to St. Petersburg in 1925 from Monroe, N.C. She was employed by Amin Dress Shop as a seamstress for many years. She was also of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a sister, Ottis T. Cowart of Metter; and three granddaughters, Marsha L. Hill of Riverview, Fla., Brenda H. Hitt of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. and Lisa D. Hill of Gulfport, Fla.
Wood Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Johnson, 70

MILLEN--Funeral for Kenneth Johnson, 70, will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary with Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in Swainsboro City Cemetery.
He died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Jenkins County Hospital in Millen after an extended illness.
A native of Emanuel County, Mr. Johnson was a US Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and owner and operator of Johnson's Auto Sales in Statesboro. He was also a member of Ogeechee Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Lisa Rich of Swainsboro, Carol Gay and Susan Brinson, both of Millen; his former wife and friend, Betty Blackburn Johnson; three sisters, Frankie Barfield of Orange Park, Fla., Shirley Murphy and Christine Nasworthy, both of Swainsboro; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Lester Brinson, Ben McNorrill, Richie Gay, Donnie Pope, Robert Wiggins and Mike Johnson.

Mary Ethel Flanders Pittman, 87

BRUNSWICK--Funeral for Mary Ethel Flanders Pittman, 87, was held Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Taylors United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at Swainsboro Nursing Home.
Mrs. Pittman was a native of Stillmore and made her home in Brunswick since 1937. She was a member of Taylors United Methodist Church for 45 years.
Survivors include two sons, Merrill C. Pittman Jr. of Warner Robins and Marshall McDaniel Pittman of Birmingham, Ala.; two daughters, Kathleen P. Parker of Orange Park, Fla. and Lesa Marie Pittman-Collins of Swainsboro; three sisters, Minnie Mae Lamb, Thelma Wooten and Hyman Smith, all of Swainsboro; one brother, Dave Flanders of Madison, Ohio; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were James J. Parker, Jack S. Parker III, Ashley M. Edwards, William L. Pittman and Jean-Paul Collins.
Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Essie Mae Whittington Crabb, 83

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Essie Mae Whittington Crabb, 83, was held Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at 3 p.m. at Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Louis R. Pearce, the Rev. John Strickland and the Rev. Cail Pressey officiated. Burial was at Watson-Odomville cemetery near Adrian.
She died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Emanuel Medical Center in Swainsboro after an extended illness.
Mrs. Crabb was a native of Emanuel County. She was retired from Johnson County Nursing Home in Scott.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul Whittington and James Crabb; her son, Ray Whittington; two grandchildren, Tonya Forbes Snyder and Greg Whittington.
Survivors include two daughters, Debbie McDaniel of Swainsboro and Martha Snyder of Tallahassee, Fla.; two sons, Tommy Whittington of Swainsboro and Curtis Whittington of Dublin; five sisters, Louise Porter of Metter, Marie Durden of Nunez, Cleo Whittington of Tallahassee, Fla., Linda Farmer of Bluffton, S.C. and Ethelene Thomas of Ridgeland, S.C.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were Garbutt Fountain, Steve Peebles, Nan Dora Kemp, Mary Lou Riner, Connie Brown, Gary Cavanah, Earl Morris and Donald Braswell.
Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Verlon Keen, 82

SOPERTON--Funeral for Verlon Keen, 82, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at 3 p.m. at Sammons Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Harmony cemetery near Soperton.
He died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta.
Mr. Keen was born in Appling County to the late Bernard and Mattie Mae Toler Keen. He was retired from the Georgia Dept. of Transportation and was of the Church of God faith. His wife, Jacqueline Kicklighter Keen, preceded him in death.
Survivors include six sons, Virgil Keen, Marvin Keen, Jerry Keen and Lamar Keen, all of Soperton, Tommy Keen of Glenwood, and Ralph Keen of Oak Park; two daughters, Carolyn Keen-Lanford of Soperton and Lillian Keen-Gregory of Swainsboro; three brothers, Carlton Keen and Duel Keen of Soperton, and Clarence Keen of East Dublin; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Sammons Funeral Home of Soperton has charge of arrangements.

Christine Bell, 53

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Christine Bell, 53, was held Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at 3 p.m. at Swainsboro City Auditorium with Evangelist Barbara Tillman officiating. Burial was at Swainsboro City Cemetery.
She died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at MCG Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Emanuel County, Mrs. Bell was born April 22, 1949, to the late Jay C. Pullens and Lurie Lee Pullens. She attended elementary and high school in Emanuel County and at an early age, she joined Coleman Chapel A.M.E. Church.
Her daughter Mannix Pullens preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Bell; two daughters, Kim Moorman of Great Lakes, Ill., and Tracy Bell of Keysville; eight foster children, Marion, Teresa, Tonya, Timothy, Jimmy, Gerald, Ray Paul and Raymond Shanks, all of Swainsboro; her mother Lurie Lee Pullens of Swainsboro; a step-mother, Susie Pullens of Swainsboro; 10 sisters, Pastor Barbara Tillman, Helen Williams, Mrs. Mickey King, Phyllis Strobridge, Minnie Howard. Diane Pullens, Debbie Pullens, Denise Pullens, Anna Coney, all of Swainsboro, and Geraldine Turner of Atlanta; two brothers, Charles Pullens and J.C. Pullens, both of Swainsboro; seven grandchildren; fourteen foster grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends.
Mosley's Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Robert T. Drew, 60

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.--Funeral for Robert T. Drew, 60, was held Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Seventh-day Adventist Church in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Burial was at Six Oaks Memorial Park.
He died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics.
Mr. Drew was born in Millen to parents Wilson D. and Dorothy Gallaher Drew, and grew up in Midville. He played basketball in high school and was a state of Georgia All Star player. He attended Georgia Military College and earned a bachelor of science degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966 attaining the rank of captain. After serving in the Army, he joined Merck and Co. and became Director of Worldwide Quality Assurance. He was also instrumental in establishing the QA/Regulatory Affairs Program at Temple University. In addition, he provided financial support to a grant program and was a member of the Temple University Steering Committee. He retired from Merck in 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Gale K. Drew; two daughters, Andrea Drew Gounev of Kansas City, Mo. and Deborah Givens of Lansdale, Pa.; a son, Barry Robert Drew of Gainesville, Fla.; and a granddaughter.
The Island Funeral Home, Inc. of Hilton Head Island, S.C. had charge of arrangements.
