Esther Lurline Gillis, 93

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Esther Lurline Gillis, 93, was held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Freeman officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.
She died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.
A native of Truetlen County, Mrs. Gillis was the daughter of the late William Linton and Leila Toler Kitchens. She had been a resident of Swainsboro and Emanuel County for 53 years. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and Faith Sunday school class. She was also a former member of Harmony Baptist Church near Soperton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred B. Gillis.
Survivors include three sons,Charles Gillis of Shellman Bluff, Franklin Gillis of Swainsboro and Lamon Gillis of Millen; one daughter, Jouce Williams of Swainsboro; one sister, Billie K. Hood of Kite; one brother, Colon Kitchens of Vidalia; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Darrell Williams, Freddy Gillis, Dock Claxton Jr., Scott Bragdon, Donald Avery, Lanier Parham, David Watson and Brandon Claxton.
Sammons Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Retha Day Watkins, 79

KITE--Funeral for Retha Day Watkins, 79, was held Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Kite Church of God with the Rev. Allen Meeks officiating. Burial was at Kite City Cemetery.
She died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Wrightsville Manor after an extended illness.
A native of Claiborne County, Tenn., Mrs. Watkins was a homemaker and member of Kite Church of God. She was the wife of the late Jesse Ford Watkins.
Survivors include one son, Tony Watkins of Kite; five sisters, Willie Connor of Duncanville, Texas, Nell Meyers of Knoxville, Tenn., Betty Connor of Texas Margaret Lynch and Lavetta Meyers, both of Maybee, Mich.; six brothers, George Day and Doug Day, both of Crowley, Texas, Mack Day and Ray Day, both of Stephenville, Texas, Conley Day and Jay Day, both of Ft. Worth, Texas.
Pallbearers were Andy Meeks, Stevie Meeks, Todd Ivey, Roy Hawkins, Randy Buxton, George A. Meeks, Johnny Claxton and Paul Williams.
Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Lucille Martin Odom, 81

SWAINSBORO-Funeral for Lucille Martin Odom, 81, was held Monday, Feb. 10, at 3 p.m. from Swainsboro First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Benjy Varnell and the Rev. Bunny Hudson officiated. Entombment was in Eastbrook cemetery Mausoleum in Swainsboro.
She died Friday, Feb. 7, in Emanuel Medical Center of Swainsboro, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Odom was a native of Emanuel County, she was retired from Swainsboro Sportswear and a member of Swainsboro First United Methodist Church and the C.I. Hall Sunday school class. She was the daughter of the late Freddie and Ella Coleman, wife of the late Ward Odom and sister of the late Jack and Charles Martin.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Wilkes of Piedmont, Ala.; three sons, Penton Allen, Johnny Fred Allen and Jimmy Wasden, all of Swainsboro; a sister, Evie Dell McCall of Savannah; two brothers, Roger Martin Sr. of Swainsboro and Ray Martin of Savannah; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Church Martin, Roger Martin Jr., Richard Snell, Johnny Ware, Jody Ware and Mike Tillman.
Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary had charge of arrangements.

Sara Lively Willis, 76

TCANOOCHEE-Graveside services for Sara Lively Willis, 76, of Canoochee will be Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m. at Old Canoochee Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Louis Pearce officiating.
She died Monday, Feb. 10, at her residence.
Mrs. Willis was a native of Emanuel County and a homemaker. She was the wife of the late Sam Willis and was a Baptist.
Survivors include three daughters, Frances Hickman and Evelyn Sheppard of Swainsboro and Faye Fowler of Senoia; three sons, Sammy Willis of Swainsboro, Jimmy Willis and Ricky Willis of Twin City; two sisters, Jeanette Holloway of Pooler and Willene Lively of Metter; 16 grandchildren; and 27 great-granchildren.
Pallbearers are David Hickman, Johnny Hickman, Clayton Sheppard, Jody Sheppard, Brian Sause and Tommy Sause.
Peebles-Curry-Durden has charge of arrangements

Robert William Brinson, 55

SWAINSBORO--Graveside services for Robert William Brinson of Swainsboro, 55, will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. in Eastbrook Cemetery. The Rev. Neil Stitch will be officiating.
He died Monday, Feb. 10, in Emanuel Medical Center after a brief illness.
Mr. Brinson was a native of Emanuel County, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Crops serving in the Vietnam Conflict where he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one star and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with device. He worked with Macy's Construction Co.. and was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother, Mildred Tanner Brinson of Swainsboro; a son, Troup Brinson of Swainsboro; a sister, Gail Lewis of Santa Claus; and two grandchildren.
Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

Annie Lois Scott, 90

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Annie Lois Scott, 90, was held Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at 12 noon at St. Phillip Baptist Church with the Rev. James Love officiating. Burial was at Swainsboro City Cemetery.
She died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Flushing Hospital of New York after an extended illness.
A native of Emanuel County, Mrs. Scott was the daughter of the late Jack and Annie Roberts. She was raised by grandmother, Mary McCloud and attended Cross Greene Elementary School. She became a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church and later moved her membership to St. Phillip Baptist Church. She was wife of the late James Edward Scott Sr. and mother of 13 children. Seven children preceded her in death. She worked at Park Haven Nursing Home in Swainsboro for many years. She was also a cook for the elderly and disabled. In 1959, she moved to New York and was a housekeeper in Great Neck and attended Ebenezer Baptist Church. She returned to Swainsboro in 1961 and attended St. Phillip Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Annie Louis Scott and Delores Anderson, both of Flushing, N.Y.; four sons, Willie Scott of Atlanta, Tommy Scott of Swainsboro, James Scott Jr. and Charles Scott, both of Flushing, N.Y.; one brother, Al Simmons of Jersey City, N.J.; 32 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren and 28 great-great-grandchildren.

James Phillips, 50

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Bishop James Phillips, 50, was held Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Swainsboro City Auditorium with Pastor Mattie Brinson officiating. Burial was at Swainsboro City Cemetery.
He died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
A native of Emanuel County, Mr. Phillips was born May 3, 1952, to the late Rudolph and Rosa Mae Parks. At an early age, he joined the House of God Church. He also worked for 23 years at Swainsboro Electric Plate Company.
Survivors include his wife, Verita Lee Phillips of Swainsboro, two daughters, Sabrina Smith of Atlanta and Klassie Robinson of Swainsboro; one son, Antonio Phillips of Swainsboro; six sisters, Annie Kelly of Savannah, Lizzie Mae Brown, Gloria Phillips, Mamie Phillips, Mary Phillips and Viola Phillips, all of Swainsboro; two brothers, David Phillips and Alonzo Phillips, both of Swainsboro; and 16 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were family and friends.
Mosley's Funerl Home, Inc. had charge of arrangements.

Jimmy Lee Leverett, 49

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Jimmie Lee Leverett, 49, was held Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Greater St. James Baptist Church with the Rev. Bennie Brinson and the Rev. Denny Beacham Sr. officiating. Burial was at Swainsboro City Cemetery.
He died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Georgia Regional Medical Center of Statesboro.
A native of Richmond County, Mr. Leverett was the son of Jim Leverett and the late Ola Mae McClatty. He attended Richmond County schools. He moved to Emanuel County after marriage and was a member of New Bethel Believers in Christ Church. He also worked in construction.
Survivors include his wife, Sheila Young Leverett of Swainsboro; five daughters, Tatyana Leverett and Tiffany Leverett, both of Swainsboro, Debra Leverett, Temeka Wells and Tabatha Perkins, all of Augusta; two sons, Jimmie Leverett Jr. and Jamie Leverett, both of Augusta; three sisters, Linda Leverett of Wrens, Elnora Stokes and Helen Moss, both of Augusta; five brothers, Willie McClatty of Long Beach, Calif., Harold Leverett, Jim Leverett, Billy McClatty and David McClatty, all of Augusta; and 14 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were brothers and brother-in-law.
Mosley's Funeral Home, Inc. had charge of arrangements.

Lewis C. Wimberly, 84

TWIN CITY--Funeral for Lewis C. Wimberly, 84, will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Hebron Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Tommy Rountree and Elder Sammy Bryant officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
He died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Metter Nursing Home after an extended illness.
A native of Emanuel County, Mr. Wimberly was a self-employed carpenter, member of Hebron Primitive Baptist Church and World War II veteran having served in the D-Day invasion with the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Madlyn Hendley Wimberly of Twin City; one son, Lewis Austin Wimberly of Dublin; one daughter, Constance Lee Hanson of Northwood, Iowa; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Walter J. Wimberly, Anthony Newsome, Anthony Brock, Tim Hendley, Kevin Brady, Ronald Austin and Lewis Austin.
Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Cowart, Joe Sid Cowart, James Johnson, Dan Womack, Homer Lewis Lanier and William Doaldson.
Southern Heritage Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Manning E. Temples, 75

VIDALIA--Funeral for Elder Manning E. Temples, 75, will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Elder Gary Hall and Elder Tommy Rountree officiating. Burial will be at Old Canoochee Primitive Baptist Church cemetery near Swainsboro.
He died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at Memorial Health University Medical Center of Savannah after a brief illness.
A native of Emanuel County, Elder Temples lived in Vidalia most of his life. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1944 and 1945. He was ordained in 1950 by the Primitive Baptist Church and pastored Old Line Primitive Baptist Church of Vidalia since 1968 and Old Canoochee Primitive Baptist Church near Swainsboro since 1970. He had served in Indiana and Macon prior to Swainsboro and Vidalia. He was also an accountant at Choo-Choo Supply Co. of Vidalia for about 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Temples of Vidalia; one son, Paul Temples of Vidalia; two daughters, Myra Soles of Vidalia and Barbara Hall of Danville; one brother, Jack Temples of New Orleans, La.; three sisters, Gertrude Calhoun of Lyons, Sara Barfield of Macon and Louise Cook of Vidalia; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Josh Hall, Brent Hall, David Hall, Brandon Soles, Brent Temples and Rodney Horne.
