Virginia K. Banks

CLAXTON -- Virginia Kight Banks, 68, died Oct. 4 at Evans Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Evans County and a member of Bull Creek Baptist Church. She worked for a number of years as a waitress at Mrs. Rogers Restaurant in Claxton.

SURVIVORS: a son, Randy Mitchell of Rincon; a daughter, Brenda M. Clark of Claxton; two sisters, Edna Glisson and Lois Lynn, both of Claxton; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. today at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home, Claxton, burial in Brewton Cemetery.

Laverne E. Blocker

GLENNVILLE -- Laverne Edith Blocker, 79, died Oct. 11.

She was a native of Long County and a resident of Glennville most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Pigott Branch Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: a son and daughter-in-law, George and Ann Blocker of Glennville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Geraldine Rhodes and Linda and Melvin Fort, all of Glennville; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-9 p.m. today at Carter Funeral Chapel in Glennville.

FUNERAL: 3 p.m. Wednesday at Carter Funeral Chapel, burial in Pigott Branch Church Cemetery.

Perry Sam Finney Jr.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND -- Retired Col. Perry Sam Finney Jr., 80, died Oct. 10 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Macon and a resident of Glynn County the past 21 years. He was a 1939 gradyate of the University of Georgia and a graduate of Command & General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth. He retired from the Army as colonel with 29 years of service. He served in the 3rd Army in Europe during World War II, Japan, Germany and Korea.

Upon retirement, he served as senior adviser in Logistics for Computer Sciences Corp. for 12 years. He was a member of Golden Isles Retired Officers Association, Golden Isles Masonic Lodge No. 707, F&AM, Scottish Rite of Savannah, York Rite, Alee Temple of Savannah, Brunswick Shrine Club and St. Simons United Methodist Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Margaret D. Finney of St. Simons Island; a daughter, Mary Grace Whittle of St. Simons Island; a son, John Perry Finney of Nashville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Whittle Stumpf and David and Daniel Finney; and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Simons United Methodist Church, burial in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens with full military honors and Masonic rites.

Fay H. Godfrey

Mrs. Fay Hall Godfrey, 84, died Oct. 10 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born in Wadley and was the widow of Virgil Forrest Godfrey. She lived in Miami for 32 years before moving back to Savannah. She formerly worked as a telephone operator for the Miami office of Southern Bell Telephone Co.

She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, the Sunshine Sunday School Class and the Circle of Love.

SURVIVORS: a niece, Barbara Pritchard of Brazil, Ind.; a nephew, William Hall of Bluffton; several great-nieces and great-nephews, including Stacey Pritchard and Diane Randall, both of Savannah; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

VISITATION: 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, burial in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.

Thelma J. Greenway

Thelma Jane Greenway, 67, of Pooler, died Oct. 10 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

She was born in Jenkins County and was a longtime resident of Pooler. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3092 and Disabled Veterans of America, Chapter 8. She was also a member of American Legion Post No. 135 and Woodmen of the World.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Rufus F. Greenway of Pooler; a daughter, Thelma Jane Floyd of Pooler; her mother, Annie Mae Zipperer of Savannah; a brother, Raiford Cowart of Savannah; a sister, Martha Hall of Faulkville; a grandson, Clifford J. Aitken of Pooler; and several nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Massey Chapel in Garden City.

FUNERAL: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Massey Chapel, burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Tommy A. Hodges

BRUNSWICK -- Tommy Archie "Tom" Hodges, 44, died Oct. 9 at home.

He was born in Brunswick and lived in Glynn County the past five years. He was a former Atlanta resident. He was a 1972 graduate of Brunswick High School and attended Brunswick Junior College.

He was a retired journalist, having worked with the Brunswick News, Marietta Daily Journal and Columbus Enquirer. He was a member of Brunswick Kiwanis Club and attended Pine Ridge Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: his mother, Mattie Hodges of Brunswick; a sister, Mary Edmands of Panama City, Fla.; two brothers, Michael D. Hodges of St. Simons Island and Charles J. Hodges of Alpharetta; and several nieces and nephews.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. today at Pine Ridge Baptist Church.

Dapheny H. James

BRUNSWICK -- Dapheny Hamilton James, 88, died Oct. 7 at Southeast Georgia Regional Hospital.

She was born in Camden County. She was a former member of Jerusalem No. 1 Baptist Church and a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Brunswick, where she served as a communion stewardess. She was the widow of Davis James Sr.

SURVIVORS: a son and daughter-in-law, Davis James Jr. and Beatrice James of Brunswick; three daughters and a son-in-law, Eunice Johnson, Vernell Hubbard and Shirley and Nathaddeus Dallas, all of Brunswick, two sisters, Amy Woodard and Doretha Wilson of Folkston; two brothers, Lucious Hamilton of Folkston and Joe Watson Hamilton of White Oak; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church in Brunswick, burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Tarboro community in White Oak.

Mildred H. Leslie

BURTON -- Mildred Sue Hooper Leslie, 68, died Oct. 10 at home.

She was born in Piedmont. She worked as a merchandiser for American Greeting Corp. She was a member of Port Royal Baptist Church, the Young Hearts and served as Sunday School class treasurer.

SURVIVORS: a son, Kenneth Michael Leslie of Columbia; two daughters, Joni L. Embrey of Burton and Lisa Garber of Lady's Island; three brothers, Bobby Hooper of Greensboro, N.C., and Jerry and Gary Hooper, both of Piedmont; two sisters, Ann Chadwell and Connie Kelley, both of Piedmont; four grandsons and a great-grandson.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 11 a.m. Wednesday in Beaufort National Cemetery.

Lovie C. Nunn

Lovie Collins Nunn, 90, of Port Wentworth, died Oct. 11 at Candler Hospital.

She was born in Tattnall County and lived in Port Wentworth the past 56 years. She was the widow of Perry Collins and Henry Nunn. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Port Wentworth since 1946 and was a member of Willing Workers Sunday School Class and Port Wentworth Senior Citizens.

SURVIVORS: two daughters and a son-in-law, Alice and Donald Howell of Port Wentworth and Margaret Gould of Rincon; a brother and sister-in-law, James C. and Betty Jo Collins of Augusta; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter and a number of nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-9 p.m. today at Fountain Funeral Home, Port Wentworth.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Port Wentworth, burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Gladys W. Page

LYONS -- Gladys Weaver Page, 90, died Oct. 10 at Starcrest Nursing Home in Lithonia.

She was born in Laurens County and lived in Lyons since 1927. She was manager of United 5&10 Retail in Lyons in early years and continued in retail sales until retirement. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lyons and was the widow of W.J. Page Sr.

SURVIVORS: four daughters, Patricia Ann Head of Conyers, Mary Sue McLane of Seneca, S.C., Sarah Betty Page of Lyons and Lynda Kaye Odom of Severna Park, Md.; a son, W.J. Page Jr. of Lyons; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. today at Murchison Funeral Home, Vidalia.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Murchison Funeral Home, burial in Lyons City Cemetery.

REMEMBRANCES: First Baptist Church of Lyons, 183 W. Liberty St., Lyons, GA.
