CLAXTON -- Lawson Lewis, 82, died Feb. 1 at Claxton Nursing Home.

He was a member of First Baptist Church and Men's Bible Sunday School Class. He was a World War II Veteran and past City Councilman for the City of Claxton. He worked as a farmer, tobacco warehouseman, school bus driver, City of Claxton policeman and eventually retired from the Department of Transportation.

SURVIVORS: a son, Willie Thomas Lewis of Claxton; a daughter, Linda Ann Scott of Statesboro; three grandchildren, James Bradley and Rev. Mark T. Lewis of Claxton and Shasta Butler of Clyo; two great-grandchildren, Brett Butler of Clyo and Caleb Bradley of Claxton.

VISITATION: beginning at 6 p.m. today at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton.

FUNERAL: 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Claxton, burial in Brewton cemetery in Hagan.

REMEMBRANCES: a charity of the donor's choice.

Pearlie Mae Moore

ESTILL, S.C. -- Mrs. Pearlie Mae "Hemmer" Moore died Jan. 27.

She was born in Hampton County. She attended the public schools of Hampton County and was a member of First Thankful Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Roslyn Mickie Wilson of Jacksonville, N.C.; two sons, Sam and Alexander Fields, both of Brooklyn, N.Y..; two sisters, Julie Mitchell and Rosella Brown, both of Estill; a brother, Bob Fields of Allendale; 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. today at First Thankful Baptist Church in Estill, burial in the church cemetery.

Raymond Morris

STATESBORO -- Raymond "Shep" Morris, 64, died Jan. 31 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Bulloch County and lived in Dallas, Texas, before moving to Tahlequah, Okla., for 19 years and returned to Bulloch County in 1991. He was an Air Force veteran and a retired general contractor. He was a member of the Statesboro First Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Jewell Kennedy Morris of Statesboro; two sons, Raymond S. Morris Jr. of Norristown and Darrell Morris of Statesboro; a daughter, Dawna Olsen of Tucson, Ariz.; four sisters, Bertie Ann Rowe of Nevils, Lois Chafin, Elizabeth Morris and Janice Amerson, all of Savannah; and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. today at Statesboro First Baptist Church, burial in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Jimmy H. Roberts

RIDGELAND, S.C. -- Jimmy Haskell Roberts, 61, died Feb. 2 at home.

He was born in Ridgeland. He was an auto technician at Stokes-Brown Toyota of Beaufort for 15 years. He was a member of Great Swamp Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Bobbie Roberts of Ridgeland; two sons, Sandy and Buddy Cooler, both of Beaufort; three daughters, Pam Cook and Judy Lowther, both of Ridgeland, and Mary Ann Peeples of Hilton Head Island; three brothers, John D. Roberts and Royce Malphrus, both of Ridgeland, and Val Malphrus of Michigan; three sisters, Virginia Byles, Vera Floyd and Eula Lee Price, all of Ridgeland; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Sauls Funeral Home .

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. Sunday at Great Swamp Baptist Church in Ridgeland, burial in the church cemetery.

Stephanie Seymour

SHARON, Tenn. -- Stephanie Seymour, 35, died Jan. 29.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Robert Seymour of Sharon; her mother and stepfather, Carolyn and Richard Hamilton of Clarksville; her father and stepmother, Henry and Jeannie Kicklighter of Savannah; sisters Deborah Doolin of Gainesville, Ga., Darlene Davis of Winder, Ga., and Susan O'Connell of Savannah; a niece, nephews and other relatives.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: was held at 3:15 p.m. Thursday in North Atlanta Memorial Park.

Edward Verdree Jr.

Edward Verdree Jr., 62, died Jan. 31 at home.

He was born in Screven County and lived in Savannah for 16 years. He was an Air Force veteran. He was a graduate of Alfred E. Beach High School Class of 1956 and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for more than 15 years in the New York and Washington., D.C. area.

SURVIVORS: sons Fernando Verdree of Columbus, Stanley Verdree of Atlanta, and Darien and Terrence Verdree, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sisters Carolyn V. Johnson and Maxine Yvonne Verdree, both of Atlanta, and Marsha A. Verdree of Savannah; a brother, Richard A. Verdree of Savannah; and three grandchildren.

Shirley T. Carter White

Shirley T. Carter White, 41, died Feb. 1 at Hospice Savannah.

She was born in Savannah and was a paraprofessional. She was a member of St. Mary's Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the No. 2 Choir.

SURVIVORS: a daughter, Lakenya Carter of Savannah; sons, Tyree L. and Deshaun T. White, both of Savannah; her grandparents, Elizabeth Fisher of Miami and Bennie Fisher of Savannah; a sister, Thelma Williams of Savannah, a brother, James Carter Jr. of Savannah; and a grandchild.

PETERSBURG, Va. - Herbert Eugene "Gene" Williams, 66, died Jan. 31 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Va.

He was born in Savannah and attended the public schools of Chatham County. He was a 1954 graduate of Woodsville High School (Sophronia M. Tompkins High School). He retired from the State of Virginia and was a self-employed taxi driver. He was an Army Veteran and member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg, Va., where he served on the Usher Board.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Catherine Williams of Petersburg, Va.; three daughters, Charlene Prince Wright of Savannah, Cheryl W. Stretcher of Virginia Beach, Va. and Regina Williams of Petersburg, Va.; two sons, Darryl Ruffin and Herbert E. Williams Jr., both of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Catherine W. Cooper of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Louis Williams Jr. of Savannah and Archie L. Williams of Tampa, Fla. and four grandchildren.

FUNERAL: noon Monday at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg, Va., burial in Petersburg Memorial Garden.

Elba Hernandez

CLAXTON - Elba Hernandez, 32, died Feb. 1 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah.

She was a native of Mante Tamalipas, Mexico and had lived in the United States for the past eleven years. She was a member of Church of Christ.

SURVIVORS: her husband, Jose Hernandez of Claxton; a son, Joe Hernandez of Claxton; two daughters, Jacqueline and Jennifer Hernandez of Claxton; her father and mother, Armando and Elba Aquilar of Claxton; a brother, Armando Aquilar of Claxton; three sisters, Alejandro Aquilar, Blanca Estela Melvin of Claxton and San Juana Ramirez of Glennville.

VISITATION: 9-10:30 a.m. today at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 11 a.m. today at Brewton cemetery in Hagan.

Iris T. Schreier

BLUFFTON - Iris Tullius Schreier, 69, died Oct. 13 in Okatie, S.C.

She was a native of Los Angeles. She was a travel agent with AAA Vacations of Bluffton, a 14-year veteran of the Travel Industry and formerly employed by United Airlines. She was a member of Church of the Cross in Bluffton and had been a resident of Sun City for one year.

SURVIVORS: two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles F. Schreier III of Takoma Park, Md. and David P. and Kimberly Schreier of Long Valley, N.J.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Church of the Cross, Bluffton.

John F. Shearouse Jr.

John F. Shearouse Jr. died Oct. 13 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of Savannah. He retired from Savannah Sugar Refinery after 32 years of service. In 1969 he retired as a major from the National Guard with 28 years of service, including four years with the European Theater of Operations during World War II with the 9th Aviation Army. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 631 and the 4th Degree. He was a member of First Volunteer Regiment, Savannah Volunteer Guards, Irish Jasper Greens and St. Patrick's Day Committee. He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Mary S. Shearouse of Savannah; a daughter and son-in-law, Angie and Bernie Foran of Savannah; four sisters, Mildred Mullis of Alma, Nell Hagins of Garden City, Julia Lewis and Penny Lane both of Thunderbolt; three grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, a sister-in-law, a granddaughter-in-law, several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

VISITATION: 4-8 p.m today at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Drayton Chapel.

ROSARY SERVICE: 6 p.m. today at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Drayton Chapel.

FUNERAL MASS: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Wilmington Island, burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

REMEMBRANCES: St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church or charity of donor's choice.

Josephine Sherwood

HILTON HEAD ISLAND - Josephine Sherwood, 63, died Oct. 13 at home.

A native of Montgomery County, Va., she moved to Sun City in 1996 from Bowie, Md. She was a member of the Sun City chorus.

SURVIVORS: her husband, William H. Sherwood; four children, Debra S. Hughes of Olney, Md., Donna A. Daley of Lothian, Md., Mary Ann Hines and Patrick A. Sherwood, both of Bowie, Md.; four sisters, Rebecca Booth of Jonesborough, Tenn., Dot King of Shawsville, Va., Sue Woodahl of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Mary Reich of Walkertown, N.C.; and 14 grandchildren.

Burial will take place in Maryland and a Memorial Mass will be held at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Bluffton at a later date.
