Madeline D. Smith

FURMAN, S.C. - Mrs. Madeline Daley Smith, 94, died Oct. 14 at Harper Nursing Center in Estill.

She was a native of Hampton County and the widow of Hoyt Grady Smith. She was a homemaker and had been affiliated with Smith & Cooper Distributors in Furman. She was a member of Furman United Methodist Church and had been active with the United Methodist Women.

SURVIVORS: two daughters and sons-in-laws, Frances and Larry Barnes of Meldrim, Ga. and Vera Margaret and Ray Cooper of Furman; two grandsons, Denny and Mark Cooper; and four great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 9 a.m. today at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, Hampton.

FUNERAL: 4 p.m. today at Furman United Methodist Church, burial in Lebanon Cemetery.

Anna Wright

SYLVANIA - Mrs. Anna Wright, 89, died Oct. 10 at East Georgia Regional Center.

A native of Screven County, she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Andrews Chapel Methodist Church where she served on the stewardess board and participated in Lamar Gospel Choir and Senior Choir.

SURVIVORS: a son, Joseph Wright of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a daughter, Bertha Williams of Augusta; a brother-in-law, Norman Scurry of Sylvania.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. today at St. Andrews Chapel Methodist Church, burial in Martin Cemetery.

J.P. Sweat

ALMA -- J.P. Sweat, 81, died June 5 at Satilla Regional Hospital.

The Ware County native owned and operated Sweat Battery and Electric for many years before retiring. He was a member of Alma First Baptist Church and had taught Sunday school for many years. He was a former member of the Alma Lions Club, Woodmen of the World and had served as a Scoutmaster.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Reba Medders Sweat of Alma; six daughters, Rhonda Howell of Blackshear, June Jeffrey and Audrey Skidmore, both of Deland, Fla., Marie Paulk of Ambrose, Lynn Music and Mary Lee Sweat of Alma; six sons, John, Larry, Roy, Jerry, David, Henry and Patrick Sweat, all of Alma; a sister, Eunice Smart of Alma; 26 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 2 p.m. today at Alma First Baptist Church, burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Gary R. Turner

RINCON -- Gary R. Turner, 52, died June 5 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

The Chatham County native was a foreman with Kawasaki Motors and an Air Force veteran of Vietnam.

SURVIVORS: three daughters and a son-in-law, Tammy M. Turner of Augusta, April D. Turner of Greenville, S.C., and Terri T. and Michael Greco of Savannah; a sister and brother-in-law, Annette and Danny Bevill of Guyton; two nephews, a great-nephew and two great-nieces.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, Effingham Chapel.

FUNERAL: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, Effingham Chapel, burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Peggy S. Wagner

WASILLA, Alaska -- Peggy Ruth Simmons Wagner, 70, died May 22 at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.

She was born and educated in Savannah and was the widow of Bill Wagner. She moved to Alaska in 1960 and lived in the Knik area and Mountain View before retiring and moving back to Knik in the 1980s.

SURVIVORS; two sisters, Connie Duncan of Savannah and Shirley Brannen of Statesboro, Ga.; a brother, Henry Harrison of Birmingham, Ala.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends is pending for some time in August, with arrangements being made by Don Wagner. Her ashes will be scattered with those of her late husband over their homestead.

James W. Ward

RINCON -- James W. Ward, 78, died June 5 at Memorial Health University Medical Center.

The Sherman, Texas, native was a member of Countryside Baptist Church. He retired from the Army after 22 years and retired from the Chatham County Public Works Department.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Rachel F. Ward of Rincon; two stepsons, Bobby Hawkins of Rincon and George Hawkins of Monks Corner, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Janice Sommers of Montgomery, Mich., and Rose Mary Runkel of Rincon; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, Effingham Chapel.

FUNERAL: 10 a.m. Thursday at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, Effingham Chapel, burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Cecil L. Adams

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Cecil Loyce Adams, 78, died Sept. 30 at Beverly Health Center in Winter Garden.

He was born in Graceville, Ga., and had served in the Army. He moved to Deland in 1975 from Savannah and to Orlando in 1990. He was a branch manager for Chatham Steel Corp., in Orlando, and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Savannah and Disabled American Veterans.

SURVIVORS: a son, James Adams of Stephens City, Va.; a daughter, Jan Elaine Taylor of Orlando; a brother, Joseph Adams of Panama City; sisters, Katrina Mastowy of Cocoa and Betty Jo Adams of Atlanta; and six grandchildren.

Walter Belton Jr.

BRUNSWICK -- Walter Belton Jr., 80, died Sept. 28 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Jacksonville, Fla., and was a member of First African Baptist Church, Brunswick, Cornerstone Lodge No. 8, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Virgin Chapter No. 58, Order of the Eastern Star (PHA). He was an educator.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Creola Barnes Belton of Brunswick; a son, Ira Michael Belton of Atlanta; two daughters, Jacqualyene B. Traeye of Brunswick and Janice M. Gibson of Decatur; a sister, Dr. Lois B. Kinney of Greensboro, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL: 4 p.m. today at First African Baptist Church, burial in Memory Gardens.

Ithiel Boggs Jr.

Ithiel Boggs Jr., 81, died Sept. 29 at Candler Hospital.

He was born and educated in Liberty County and lived in Savannah most of his life. He retired from Espy Paving Co. as a truck driver and was a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: his guardian, Mayola Jones of Savannah; and several cousins, including Olivia West of Palatka, Fla., Melvin Boggs, Ruth Jinks and Paul Boggs, all of Savannah.

SERVICE: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bynes-Royall Funeral Home, burial in Jerusalem Baptist Church cemetery in Groveland.

John B. Bruce

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- John Bidwell Bruce, 80, died Sept. 30 at Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics.

He was a native of Middletown, Conn., and was a graduate of Wesleyan University of Middletown, where he was a member of Chi Psi Fraternity and participated in track. He moved to Hilton Head Island in 1986 from Warwick, R.I.

He was an Army captain in World War II and served in the Pacific Theater, in New Guinea.

SURVIVORS: two daughters and a son-in-law, Pamela and William McKenna of Hilton Head Island and Brenda Bruce Attridge of Manchester, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Zachary and Mariah McKenna, both of Hilton Head Island, and Terrence Attridge of Manchester.

Services will be private, with interment in Middletown.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mary Lizzie Driggers Chesser, 79, died Oct. 1.

She was a former resident of Savannah.
