COVINGTON -- Mrs. Laura Emma Whited Worth, 79, died Sept. 17 at home .

The Ithacta, N.Y., native lived in Covington for a number of years and was a member of the First Baptist Port Orange Church. She was a homemaker.

SURVIVORS: three daughters, Shirley Ann Center of Conyers, Janice Marie Henry of Lithonia and Norma Jean Nichols of Douglasville; a sister, Betty Jean Vastenio of Newfield, N.Y.; a brother, Kenneth Gerald Whited of Ithacha; a half brother, Harry Bolt Higgins of Trumansburg, N.Y.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

VISITATION: will begin at 6 p.m. today at Wainwright-Parlor Funeral Home.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home, burial in Broxton City Cemetery.

Becky Atwood

VARNVILLE, S.C. -- Mrs. Becky Atwood, 82, died Oct. 22 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The Findlay, Ohio, native, along with her late husband, Robert Miller Atwood, had owned and operated a gift shop in Deerfield Beach, Fla. She was active in local civic organizations including the Wil Mila Ladies Group in Hampton, the local Prison Ministry and was a member of Community Faith Fellowship Church in Hampton.

SURVIVORS: daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia A. and James Blume of Hampton and Margo A. and Richard H. Gay of Broken Arrow, Okla.; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

VISITATION: 7-10 p.m. today at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, Hampton.

FUNERAL: 10 a.m. Thursday at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home.

BURIAL: will be private in Varnville Cemetery.

REMEMBRANCES: Community Christian Academy, 900 Wade Hampton Road, Hampton, SC 29924.

Mary L. Barnhill

SOPERTON -- Mary Lois Barnhill, 77, died Oct. 22 at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin.

The Emanuel County native was a retired novelty packer with Sealtest, Jacksonville, Fla. She was a member of Sardis Primitive Baptist Church, Emanuel County.

SURVIVORS: two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Danny Brooks of Soperton and Jeannie and Jerry Smith of Largo, Fla.; three granddaughters, Kimberly Brooks-Keen and Renee Brooks, both of Soperton and Wendy Smith-Ling of Tallahassee, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren, Adrianne Keen and Taylor Keen, both of Soperton and Morgan Ling of Tallahassee.

SERVICE: 3 p.m. today at Sammons Funeral Home, Soperton, burial in Red Bluff Cemetery, Treutlen County.

Frances L. Brooke

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Frances Lea Brooke, of Sea Pines Plantation, died Oct. 21 at home.

She was the widow of Edgar Duffield Brooke, a career officer in the Foreign Service. She was a native of South Carolina and a former resident of Richmond, Va., and Falls Church, Va. She was a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party.

She was an NABC Master of the American Contract Bridge League, a duplicate member of the Hilton Head Island Bridge Association and an associate member of the Sea Pines Country Club.

SURVIVORS: her children, Robert Taliaferro Brooke of Berkeley, Calif., Lawrence Lea and Eliana Brooke; her grandchildren, Kristina, David and Ian of Sonoma, Calif., Julia Hammond Brooke and Jude Edgar Brooke-Totty recently returned from Cornwall, U.K.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Virginia Heslep of Richmond and Helen and Lewis Cobb of Lancaster, Va.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 12:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Hilton Head Island.

Samuel P. Brown

JESUP -- Samuel P. Brown, 58, died Oct. 19 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of Wayne County.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Shirley R. Brown of Jesup; two sons, Samuel Pickett of Jacksonville, Fla., and Joseph McCray of Jesup; a sister, Ruth Hines of Dallas; three brothers, Edward Brown of Jesup, Ronald Brown of Jacksonville and David Wells of Atlanta; three grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

FUNERAL: 3 p.m. today at Eternal Harvest Holiness Church, burial in Jesup City Cemetery.

Bernice F. Campbell

WARE COUNTY -- Miss Bernice Faye Campbell, 84, died Oct. 22 at Baptist Village.

She was a lifelong resident of Ware County and a longtime member of Gilchrist Park United Methodist Church, where she formerly served as treasurer. She was a retired teller from First National Bank in Waycross, now SunTrust.

SURVIVORS: two sisters, Ethel Smallwood of Cochran and Frances Reeder of Childersburg, Ala.; a brother, Earl Campbell of Waycross; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives including Nancy and Phil Keeny of St. Charles, Ill.

FUNERAL: 3 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home, Blackshear, burial in Oakland Cemetery.

Navy Cmdr. William H. Dewey

ST. MARYS -- Retired Navy Cmdr. William Harold Dewey, 81, died Oct. 21 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick.

The Van Buren County, Mich., native was a graduate of Michigan State University. He retired from the Navy after 26 years and served as an executive officer at NAS Glynco. He served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. After retirement he was the Glynn County assistant county administrator for 10 years. He was a member of Brunswick Kiwanis and Christ Church Episcopal of St. Simons Island.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Doris B. Dewey of St. Marys; two daughters, Cindy Dewey of Newnan and Sue Dewey of Lawrence, Kan.; a son, Mark Dewey of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; a stepson, John Robert Davis of Kingsland; a sister, Miriam Hurley of East Lansing, Mich.; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 2 p.m. today in Christ Church Frederica, St. Simons Island.

Zedna W. Donaldson

Mrs. Zedna Woodcock Donaldson, 88, died Oct. 22 at Azalealand Convalescent Center under the care of Hospice Savannah.

The Bulloch County native moved to Savannah 37 years ago from Florida. She was the widow of Dean F. Donaldson. She was a member of Savannah Progressive Primitive Baptist Church, Etha Everett Bible Class and Emma Cowart-Sadie Crowe Circle.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Barbara D. Matos and Deborah Ruth Coolidge, both of Savannah; a sister, Virgie Donaldson of Savannah; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Thursday at Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel, burial in Bonaventure Cemetery.

Virginia R. Furse

INGLIS, Fla. -- Mrs. Virginia R. Furse, 96, died Oct. 22.

The Luray, S.C., native was a homemaker. She was a member of Beech Branch Baptist Church in Luray and the widow of William J. Furse.

SURVIVORS: a son, William J. Furse Jr. of Inglis; a brother, Dan Rouse of Luray; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 11 a.m. Friday in Beech Branch cemetery near Luray.

W. Ben Kelly

W. Ben Kelly, 67, died Oct. 22 at home.

He was a native of Vienna, Ga., and lived in Savannah the past 30 years. He was a graduate of Berry College in Rome. He was a retired insurance executive, a veteran of the Army and a member of Wilmington Island United Methodist Church.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Shirley M. Kelly of Savannah; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Glenn Kelly of Jacksonville, Fla., Jeff and Fran Kelly of Savannah; a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Herschel Burch of Cleveland, Ga.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Mae Kelly of Columbus and Steve and Nancy Kelly of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Thursday at Wilmington Island United Methodist Church.

Brenda Levenia Stanfield King, 37, died Oct. 19.

She was born in Savannah and attended Groves High School. She was a cook for Terry's Day Care in Savannah and a member of Redeem Fellowship Baptist Church.

SURVIVORS: two daughters, Chiquitta Lattimore and Rhonda Stanfield, both of Savannah; a son, Calvin Stanfield of Savannah; her parents, Joe and Jackie Stanfield of Savannah; two sisters, Rose Simmons and Tammy Blackshear, both of Savannah; and three brothers, Ray Stanfield, Joe Wayne Stanfield and Jessie Mitchell Stanfield, all of Savannah.

SERVICE: 11 a.m. today at Richmond Hill Funeral Home in Richmond Hill, burial in Hillcrest Abbey West, Savannah.

John K. Newman Jr.

John Kelly Newman Jr., 62, of Garden City, died Oct. 22 at home.

He was born in Chatham County and retired from Union Camp as a papermaker. He was a Marine Corps veteran and a member of Union Mission Church in Savannah.

SURVIVORS: his wife, Shirley Sue Newman of Garden City; a daughter, Angela Newman Fields of Garden City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen Glyn Newman and Alana Newman of Brooklet and John Kelly Newman III and Stacy Newman of West Virginia; his mother, Gladys A. Newman of Garden City; three brothers, Jack and Roscoe Newman, both of Garden City, and Joseph Newman of Port Wentworth; seven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 6-8 p.m. today at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel in Pooler.

SERVICE: 2 p.m. Thursday at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel in Pooler, burial in Hillcrest Abbey West.
