Sosebee, 62, of Kingsland died on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Following high - school graduation, Sosebee served in the U.S. Air Force, then was employed for 10 years by Lockheed Aircraft Corp. in Marietta. He later entered the Dental School of the Medical College of Georgia, graduating in 1977 with a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. Sosebee practiced dentistry in southeast Georgia for 23 years, primarily in Glynn County, retiring in 2002 due to illness. Sosebee was an avid reader and lifelong student. He enjoyed several hobbies and sports which brought him many happy hours and treasured friendships. He also had a soft heart for animals and provided a welcome home to several beloved pets during his lifetime. Sosebee was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest B. and Maudelle C. Sosebee of Rockmart. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Sandra F. Sosebee; sister, Janet S. Adams of Kennesaw; aunts, Edna C. Lumpkin of Rockmart and Judy Sosebee Ingram of Jasper; uncle, Harold Sosebee of Kennesaw; mother - in - law, Doris A. Morris of Rockmart; sister - in - law, Vickie M. (Ray) Worsham of Dallas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Allison Memorial Chapel of St. Marys is in charge of arrangements. Memorial services will be held at a later date. THOMAS - Theodore Byrd Thomas Sr., 79, of St. Marys died on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at the home of his daughter in Hendersonville, N.C. Thomas was a native of Broward County, Fla. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Pauline Thomas, who died in 2003. He was a veteran of World War II and from 1940 to 1974 served with the U.S. Merchant Marines and briefly with the U.S. Coast Guard. For his service he received medals for duty in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean - Middle East war zones. Thomas was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 109 F & AM in St. Marys. He enjoyed woodworking and especially loved children. Survivors include two sons, Theodore (Karen) Thomas Jr. of Boca Raton, Fla., and Warren Thomas of Kingsland; two daughters, Pauline Moorehead of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Ann (Stan Jr.) McChristian of Hendersonville; brother, Doug Phillips of Portsmouth, Va.; nine grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew. Allison Memorial Chapel of St. Marys is in charge of arrangements. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 12 at the funeral home. RYALS - Betty Jane Ryals, 64, of Folkston died on Monday, July 26, 2004. Ryals was a member of Ruhamah Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Joseph "Kenneth" Ryals of Folkston; three daughters, Tammie (Michael) Turner, Tonya (Michael) Morgan and Teresa (David) Batten, all of Folkston; six grandchildren, Tiffany Burch, Kaylee Turner, Tyler and Tanner Morgan, Megan Miller and Devin Batten; and brothers and sisters, Grady (Willa Mae) Bridges of Jacksonville, Fla., Clinton (Linda) Bridges of Bakersfield, Calif., Richard (Paulette) Bridges of Kingsland, James (Jackie) Bridges of Waynesville, Terry (Becky) Bridges of Jesup and Joann (Ken) Lipthratt and Teresa (Robert) Brooks, all of Brunswick. Shepard Funeral Home of Folkston was in charge of arrangements. Visitation was held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28 at the funeral home. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 29 at the church, with Rev. John Anglin and Rev. Walter Dowling officiating. Burial followed in Homeland Cemetery. ELLERSON - Margaret Ellerson, 85, of St. Marys died Oct. 1, 2004 at Camden Medical Center in St. Marys. Sister Margaret Ellerson affectionately known as "Bug" was born Jan. 16, 1919 to the late Chancey and Clara Theresa Campbell Johnson. She was the youngest of three children, she married the late Howard Ellerson. She joined the First African Baptist Church at an early age where she served faithfully for more than 70 years. She was a Sunday school teacher, as well. Sister Ellerson leaves to cherish her loving memories four daughters: Mildred Thomas of Woodbine, Peggy Smith of Kingsland, Venus Austin of Chicago, Ill., and Viola Drummond of St. Marys. She raised two grandsons, Howard Ellerson of St. Marys and Michael Ellerson of Kingsland. She is survived by one aunt, sister Roberta Campbell of Kingsland, 13 grandchildren and a host of great - grandchildren, great - great - grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and sorrowed friends. Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. at First African Missionary Baptist Church located at 495 North Lee St., Kingsland. Sister Ellerson will lie in State inside the Butler Memorial Chapel located inside the Myers Funeral Home in Woodbine. Interment will be at Oak Grove cemetery in St. Marys. Rev. Gary O. Tyner will officiate and the pallbearers are Charles Jenkins, Calvin wilson, Charles Floyd, Sammie Campbell. The deacons of First African Baptist Church in St. Marys and Zion Lodge No. 7, Howard Ellerson, Michael Ellerson, Kenneth Smith Jr., Kevin Smith, Kimyatta Smith and John Hubbard. MACKEY - William Henry Mackey, Jr, 84, died Oct. 2, 2004 in U.S. Veteran's Medical Center, Lake City, Fla. Mackey was born June 9, 1920 in Jacksonville, Fla. to the late Blanche Weston Mackey and William Henry Mackey, Sr. He is survived by son Patrice Mackey; sisters Myryl Warren and Harriett Lloyd; brothers Robert and Fernandez Mackey; and grandchildren Sofia Harriett and Isabel Mackey. He was predeceased by daughter Constance Johanna Mackey on Dec. 23, 2000. Mackey was raised in Scarlet, outside of Woodbine by his maternal grandmother, Harriett Sibley Weston. After serving honorable as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, Mackey moved to New York City where he studied Structural Engineering at the State University of New York. He received his engineering degree in 1949. While working as an engineer he began honing his photography skills. In 1961 he opened what was to become a well - known coffeehouse in East Greenwich Village are of New York City, "Les Deux Megots". The coffeehouse hosted poetry readings and political discussions featuring many luminaries of the day including LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), Allen Ginsburg, Carol Berge, Paul Krassner and William F. Buckley. During the 1960's Mackey began a successful career as a studio and freelance photographer covering photographic assignments for Time/life, The Liberator and Black Creation Magazine among others. In the early 1970's Mackey became a recurring guest lecturer at the Black Studies department of the City College of New York where he subsequently held a position as a professor of history. From 1978 until his illness in July 2003, Mackey was a professor of History and Labor Studies at Empire State College. In addition to his college courses, Mackey taught weekly free African and African - American history classes for his local community. He was also a highly acclaimed lecturer on many subjects including History, Music, Photojournalism, Art History and Current Events. Mackey is remembered as a highly motivational and very outspoken teacher who emphasized the necessity of critical thinking skills to his students. He opened many of their eyes to the importance and value of education in an increasingly competitive and complex world. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, at Westlight Baptist Church, Woodbine, at 1 p.m. The body will lie in state at the church two hours prior to services. There will be no wake. TELEGA - Michael P. Telega, 87, of 375 Hadley Road, Sunderland, Mass., former Sunderland two - term selectman, died Sept. 26, 2004 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. He was born in Sunderland, March 13, 1917, the son of Theodore Sr. and Tatianna (Bohonowicz) Telega. He was educated in the Sunderland school and graduated from Amherst High School in 1936. He later married Helen Margaret Korpita in Holy Ghost Ukranian Catholic Church, South Deerfield. All of their married life was spent in Sunderland. He was a self - employed farmer. He owned and operated the Silver Lane Package Store in Sunderland for 50 years. Michael was president and treasurer of Holy Ghost Church, captain of Sunderland Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, Sunderland police officer, Boy Scout advisor and advisor to Food Bank in Hadley. Besides his wife Helen, he leaves one son, Peter M. Telega, and his wife Margaret, two daughters, Donna L. Casey, and her husband Patrick, and Patricia E. Robinson and her husband Sam. Another daughter, Rebecca Powers predeceased him; two brothers, William Telega of St. Marys and Theodore Telega, Jr. of Greenfield; one sister, Elizabeth Karas of South Deerfield; six grandchildren; two step - grandchildren; 10 great - grandchildren; five step - great - grandchildren, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, "Buddy." A sister, Pauline Moreau, and one brother, Stephen Telega predeceased him. DICKEY - Lizzie Belle Simpson Dickey, 84, of Woodbine died on Friday, Oct. 8, 2004 at Southeast Georgia Health Systems in Brunswick. Dickey was a native and lifelong resident of Camden County. She was the co - owner and operator of Dickey & Sons, Inc. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Sunday School class in St. Marys and past member of the St. Marys Women's Club. Dickey was preceded in death by her son, Alvin J. Dickey. Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Alvin C. Dickey of Woodbine; daughters, Elizabeth Mae (George) Dickey Campbell of Texas - Colorado and Dolores Nina (Tommy) Dickey Rudulph of Woodbine; daughter - in - law, Virginia Dickey Caldwell of St. Marys; sons, Wesley Frank (Luana) Dickey of Jekyll Island, Jim S. (Wanda) Dickey of St. Marys and Jack Bishop (Kate) Dickey of Woodbine; brothers, Arthur Simpson of St. Marys and Jimmy Simpson of Aransas Pass, Texas; 18 grandchildren; 38 great - grandchildren; and two great - great - grandchildren. Allison Memorial Chapel of St. Marys was in charge of arrangements. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11 at the funeral home. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at the funeral home, with Rev. David Lunden and Rev. Steve Kegley officiating. Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers included Travis Dickey, Derek Dickey, Wayne Dickey, Wes Dickey, Wyman Dickey, Raymond Dickey, Brian Dickey, Murray Campbell, Marshall Campbell and Marc Campbell. Honorary pallbearers included Camden County Sheriff Bill Smith, Clifford Manning, Kilroy Cook and Stafford Sheffield. PATTERSON - Hunter Earl Forest Patterson, 3, of Folkston died on Monday, Oct. 4, 2004 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jennifer Lynn Patterson. Survivors include his father, Jamie Patterson of Folkston; four brothers, Christopher Chastain, Brandon Lee Green, David Alex Glenn Chastain and James Carl Patterson, all of Folkston; grandparents, Arnold Glenn and Jeanette Chastain of Augusta, Fred Patterson of Folkston and Debbie Patterson of Jacksonville, Fla.; aunts, Rebecca Chastain of Folkston and Christy Young of Sunnyside, Md.; uncles, Hubert Chastain and Glenn Chastain, both of Folkston; and a number of cousins and other relatives. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 8 at Camp Pinckney Baptist Church, with Rev. Ray McMillan officiating. Memorialization will be by cremation. JENNINGS - Frances O'Berry Crews Jennings, 69, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004 at the Baptist Medical Center - Nassau in Fernandina Beach, Fla. She had been a lifelong resident of Camden County and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church in Woodbine. She was proceeded in death by her spouse, Alfred P. Jennings. She is survived by her son, Allen Crews; two daughters, Maria Lloyd of Waynesville, and Janice Griffen Harris of Yulee, Fla.; two sisters, Mildred McClendon of Galveston, Texas, and LaVerne Lovell of Freeport, Texas; two brothers, Billy O'Berry of Woodbine, and Buck O'Berry of Marrianna, Fla.; nine grandchildren, 29 great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family received friends Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 6 pm. to 8 p.m. at Edo Miller Funeral Home Camden Chapel. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Missionary Baptist Church in Woodbine with the Rev. Charles Harris officiating. CRIBBS - Marie Kathleen Cribbs, 56, St. Marys, died Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 24, 2004, at the home of her mother Mrs. Cecile Ternest in Jamestown after an extended illness. ALLARD - Arthur J. "Al" Allard Jr., 84, of St. Simons Island died Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick. Allard was born on May 23, 1921, in Parris Island, S.C. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1939. When America went to war in 1941 he volunteered for the 1st Raider Battalion, also known as "Edson's Raiders." Allard fought in the Battle of Tulagi, the first and second battles of the Matanikar and the Battle of Bloody Ridge on Guadalcanal. His awards include the Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal with four Battle Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. After his retirement in 1985 from Kraft Bag Company in St. Marys, Allard moved to St. Simons Island where he enjoyed golfing with his buddies and get - togethers with the Sandpipers Club. Allard was preceded in death by his wife, the former Carlotta Haskins of Savannah. Survivors include his daughters, Holly (Wayne) Thompson of St. Simons Island and Judy (Frank) Marchione of Attleboro, Mass.; five grandchildren; and two great - grandchildren. Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick is in charge of arrangements. A celebration of his life will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 12 in the home of his daughter, 120 Dunbarton Drive, St. Simons Island.
