Wilbur Gene Kennedy, 61

Wilbur Gene Kennedy, 61, of Collins died Friday, August 17, 2007, at his home.
The Tattnall County lifelong resident was a 1965 graduate of Collins High School and was an Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. He worked most of his life as an electrical contractor and farmer and was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church. Wilbur loved fishing, hunting and softball.
He is survived by a son, Brian Gene Kennedy of Collins; daughter and son - in - law, Melody and Francis E. Lightsey of Brooklet; three brothers, Billy Kennedy of Cobbtown, Edward Kennedy of Collins and Larry Kennedy of Vidalia; two sisters, Betty Brown of Collins and Julia Hook of Savannah; two grandchildren, Dylan Gage Lightsey and Cierra Morgan Lightsey.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, August 19, 2007, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, with burial in the Cedar Creek Cemetery. Rev. Jim Rogers officiated.
Pallbearers were John Kennedy, Randy Brown, Michael Lynn, David Williamson, Richard Kennedy and Lewis Cowart Jr.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Lloyd E. McGlashan, 73

Lloyd E. McGlashan, 73, died Monday, August 20, 2007, at Glenvue Nursing Home. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area most of his life. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Smyrna Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd E. McGlashan Jr. and a daughter, Janet McGlashan.
Survivors include children, Ernest McGlashan of Cobbtown, James McGlashan (Vickie) of Metter and Michael McGlashan of Warner Robins; sisters, Shirley Brewton and Janice McGlashan, both of Claxton; half - brothers, Marty McGlashan of Kentucky, Joey McGlashan of Nashville and Barry McGlashan of Glennville; 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 22, 2007, from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Murl Gwynn officiating. Burial followed in Smyrna Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jerry Burkhalter, Raymond McGlashan, Larry McGlashan, Joshua McGlashan, Andy McGlashan and Cody McGlashan.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Lamont Moody, 75

Lamont Moody, 75, passed away Friday, August 17, 2007, at Ogeechee Area Hospice Center in Statesboro. The Volusia County Florida native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He served his country with honor during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army and went on to serve in the U.S. Merchant Marines for over 35 years. He was a former funeral assistant and a member of Glennville United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Madera Folsom Moody of Glennville; daughters and son - in - law, Diane and Irbie Moody of Glennville and Patty Lang of McDonough; sisters, Laverne M. Coleman of Folkston and Loree M. Miller of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Kristen Moody and Parick Hall, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 from the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, with Reverend Oscar Rowe Jr. and Reverend Vance Riggins officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dicky Dixon, Louis Geiger, Charles Moody, Tim Crews, Donald Barrow, Derrell Bland and Kenny Long.

Elizabeth Speer Ratzel, 68

Elizabeth Speer Ratzel, 68, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2007, at her residence under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. The Newton County, GA, native had lived in the Ft. Stewart/ Hinesville since 1995 moving to Glennville in 2003. She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother and great - grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Maynard E. Ratzel Jr. of Glennville; children, Kenneth Palmer of Atlanta, Hammond Palmer (Brenda) of Claxton, Eric Palmer of Atlanta, Teresa Anthony of Stockbridge, Maynard E. Ratzel III (Lynn) of Glennville, Jason Ratzel and Michael Ratzel, both of Atlanta; sister Lucille Moore (Riley) of Sharpsburg; brother, Sam Speer of Forest Park; eight grandchildren; two great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 25, 2007, from the Chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Jerald Dorr officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Steven L. Thaden Jr., Joshua A. Palmer, Ryan O’Qualls, Wallace Holloway, Joe Davis and Danny Durrence.

Samuel James “Sammie J.” Rhodes, 84

Samuel James “Sammie J.” Rhodes, 84, of Collins, formerly of Abbeville, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2007, in the Ogeechee Area Hospice Center in Statesboro. Funeral services were held Sunday, August 19, 2007, in the Lebanon Baptist Church in Abbeville. The Reverend Chuck Taylor and Reverend Jim Faircloth officiated over the ceremony. Interment followed in the Lebanon Cemetery with military rites.
Mr. Rhodes was born on November 26, 1922, in Wilcox County, but had lived in Collins since 1974. He was son of the late John Albert Rhodes and Vera Eliza Tomberlin Rhodes. He was a retired school teacher, principal, mortician and funeral director. He was a member of the Collins First Baptist Church and was an ordained Missionary Baptist Minister. He was a member of the Western Light Masonic Lodge #272 and was former Wilcox County coroner. He served his country with honor during World War II and the Korean Conflict in the United States Air Force and Army.
He is survived by his wife, Joicelyn C. Rhodes of Collins; son, Warren (Connie) Rhodes of Allen, TX; sisters, Alice R. Dowdy of Gulfport, MS; and Johnnie R. Knight of Vandiver, AL; three grandchildren, Michelle R. (Daniel) Gerber, Steven R. Rhodes, and Stacy W. Rhodes; three great - grandchildren, Natasha Gerber, Abigayle Gerber and Samantha Joy (Sami J) Gerber.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lebanon Baptist Church, C/O Mary Rhodes, 213 Wilson Rd., Abbeville, GA 31001; or Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.
Frazier and Son Funeral Home in Rochelle was in charge of the arrangements.

Rachel Rubena Surrency, 80

Rachel Rubena Surrency, 80, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2007. She was born to Rev. Tyson King and Iona Moore King March 23, 1927, in Glenwood, GA, in Wheeler County. She attended Wheeler and Tattnall County schools. Sis. Rachel had a great experience with God and received Jesus Christ as her Saviour and Lord. He filled her with His Holy Spirit some 40 odd years ago. Sis. Rachel had a ministry with men, women, boys and girls and she was able to meet each person at their level. She didn’t have a problem with their condition or color. She would tell them what Jesus would and could do for their life if they just received Him as their Saviour and Lord. She ministered especially with the children; Burns Village has lost a great servant of God and a prayer warrior.
She leaves to mourn her homegoing, two loving daughters, Mrs. Maxine Coley (Norris) of Reidsville, GA, Janice Oglesby (Carl) of Glennville, GA; two sons, Freddie Hicks Jr. (Gail) of Glennville, GA, Johnny Brown (Mamie) of Augusta, GA; three brothers, George King (Velma), Sam King (Sherry), all of Miami, FL, and Ruben King (Novella) of Glennville, GA; three sisters, Min. Pinkie Brown (Rev. Willie Brown) of Glennville, GA, Ms. Zadene Walker, Ms. Bernice Collins, all of Tulsa, OK; one aunt, Mrs. Omie Lee Burney of Glenwood, GA; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and one grandchild preceded her in death; one Goddaughter, Emily Murphy of Glennville, GA; a host of adopted children of all ages; and a special friend, Mrs. Emily Kicklighter.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 19 at 11 a.m. at Evening Light Reformation Church of God in Glennville. Pastor Joeretha Johnson officiated and Rev. Lillie Pearl Taylor presided over the service.
Pallbearers were Herman Lisbon, Eric Brown, Dale Thomas, Ananias Thomas, Earl Brown, Eugene Harvey Jr., Terry Brown and Andrew MacFarlane.
King and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Bennie J. Burkhalter, 75

Bennie J. Burkhalter, 75, died Thursday, August 9, 2007, at Candler Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of his life. He was a farmer and was of Baptist faith.
He is survived by special friends, Wendell and LeeAnn Durrence, and several cousins.
Graveside funeral services were August 11, 2007, at Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery with Dr. Charles (Bucky) Strickland officiating.

Clark Gardner, 58

Clark Gardner, 58, died Friday, August 10, 2007, at Heritage Park Nursing Home in Savannah. He was a Tattnall County native but moved away for a while. After returning to Glennville in 1989, he worked for Duramatic Products Manufacturing Company from November 1989 until his retirement due to illness in June 2000. He attended St. James A.M.E. Church.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah A. Gardner; three sons, Felix Gardner and Dexter Gardner of Glennville and Demetrius Gardner of Tampa, Florida; two daughters, Julie S. Gardner and Channell Gardner of Riverhead, New York; daughter - in - law, Denise Gardner of Indianapolis, Indiana; one sister, Sharee Gibson of Atlanta; two sisters - in - law, Joyce C. Hart of Palatka, Florida, and Vernie L. Hill of Jacksonville, Florida; five brothers - in - law, Larry H. Hill of Glennville, David L. Hill and Eric L. Pope of Atlanta, Frederick L. Hill of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Lorenzo J. Hart of Palatka, Florida; one special aunt, Ruth Porter of Glennville; one uncle, Jimmy Futch of Chicago, Illinois; eight grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 18, at 11 a.m. at St. James A.M.E. Church in Glennville. Burial will follow in Sandhill Cemetery in Long County.

Jack E. Terrell, 78

Jack E. Terrell, 78, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2007, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Toombs County native had lived in Glennville most of his life. He was a member of Glennville Church of God where he previously served on the Pastor’s Council, and as Sunday School Superintendent. He loved God, his church and family and was an avid fisherman and Volkswagen auto mechanic. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elaine Terrell Thompson and brothers, Luke and T. E. Terrell.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Hazel Terrell of Glennville; sons and daughters - in - law, Danny and Jean Terrell and Wayne and Deborah Terrell; daughter and son - in - law, Holly and Frankie Wieczorek all of Glennville; brothers and sister - in - law, Dewey “Shady” Terrell of Faulkville and Huey “Reggie” and Betty Terrell of Savannah; sisters and brother - in - law, Doris McCullough and Barbara and Leon White all of Pooler; grandchildren, Telenia Thompson Brooks of Grandview, TN, Scott Terrell, Matt Terrell, Amanda Loyed, Daphnie Smith, Lynette Clark, Sarah Todd and Cyndi Mock, all of Glennville; 11 great - grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 14, 2007, at Glennville Church of God with Reverend John Nunes and Reverend Mourice Floyd officiating. Burial followed in Glennville Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Colby Allen, Scott Blake, Stoy Martin, Roger Nelson, Ken Plyler, and Buster Johnson.

Faye Hallman Tootle, 61

Faye Hallman Tootle, 61, died Monday, August 13, 2007, at Community Hospice House in Vidalia. The Tattnall County native had lived in this area all of her life. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Ada Steedley Hallman and a brother, Donnie Hallman.
She is survived by her husband, Kline Tootle of Reidsville; daughters and son - in - law, Chari and David Karinshak of Charleston, SC and Tiff Tootle of Columbus, GA; son and daughter - in - law, Shawn and Shanna Tootle of Reidsville; brothers and sisters - in - law, Bob and Ouida Hallman of Savannah, Ronald and Sonja Hallman of Jacksonville, FL and Jim and Cathy Hallman of Tennessee; sister - in - law, Betty Hallman of Marion, NC; grandchildren, Christopher, Lauren and Ben Karinshak and Kayla and Austin Tootle; special friend and caregiver, Margaret Johnson; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Michael Morgan and Dr. Charles (Bucky) Strickland officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Wilkes, Ernest Stanfield, Robert Krause, Eddie Durrence, Hal Waters and Tommy Wilkes. Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
