Waldo F. Blocker, 89

Waldo F. Blocker, 89, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of his life. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was retired from Civil Service at Ft. Stewart. He was a member of the VFW Post #8379 and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He loved farming and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great - grandfather and great - great - grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Louise Waters Blocker of Glennville; sons and daughters - in - law, Everette F. and Peggie Blocker of Westlake, LA, Neal L. and Patricia Blocker of Lyons, and Loy S. and Bonnie Blocker of Glennville; daughters and sons - in - law, Cathy and George Leubner of Westlake, LA, Cay and Eddy Holliday of Glennville, Donna Blocker Frey of Lake Charles, LA; sister, Rubye Waters of Winter Park, FL; brothers, Dwight Blocker of McDonough, Henry C. Blocker Jr. of Columbia, SC and Kenneth Blocker of Glennville; 13 grandchildren; 12 great - grandchildren, two great - great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at Calvary Baptist Church with Reverend Jerry Knight and Reverend Oscar Rowe Jr., officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery with military honors.
Pallbearers were Stephen L. Blocker, Michael W. Leubner, Stacy L. Blocker, Evan W. Frey, Jason E. Leubner and Tyler S. Frey.
Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

John Ander Foskey, 61

John Ander Foskey, 61, died Thursday, February 7, 2008, at his home.
The Wheeler County, Shiloh City, Georgia, native had resided in Evans County for most of his life. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church. He was an avid antique dealer.
Ander was preceded in death by his parents, Viene and Eulie Foskey.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle Barrow Foskey of Claxton; two sons and daughter - in - law, Abe and Foskey of Claxton, and Dwayne Randle of Temple, GA; one daughter, Chona Dyess of Claxton; three brothers, Harold Foskey of Collins, Perry Hearn of Millen and Terry Hearn of Louisiana; two grandchildren, Nevan Dyess and Ayla Foskey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers were Josh Reynolds, Tracey Driggers, Sammy Driggers, Tommy Sapp, Kevin Hendrix, and Kyle Vliett.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 10, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Gatus Cheatham officiating. Interment followed in the Brewton Cemetery.
Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Anne Odom Rogers, 77

Anne Odom Rogers, 77, passed away February 6, 2008, after a short illness.
The Tattnall County native was born November 11, 1930, and lived most of her life in Evans County. She was a member of Bull Creek Baptist Church and a homemaker. She attended Georgia Southern College and worked for a number of years at the Evans County Tax Commissioners Office and as a substitute teacher for Evans County Elementary School.
She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Grady and Cyril Odom and Cubie Odom Kicklighter.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Odell Rogers of Claxton; three daughters and sons - in - law, Joy and Tom Pinckard, and Janet Byrd, all of Claxton and Jill and Jim Pittman of Metter; one sister, Linda Cuellar of Springfield; grandchildren, Becky and Josh Havener of Griffithville, AR, Jordan and James Pittman of Metter, Casey and Deidre Pinckard of Claxton and Tuesday Byrd of Claxton; great - grandchildren, Hallie Havener of Griffithville, AR and Dawson Pinckard of Claxton; two sisters - in - law, Jean Odom and Christine Odom of Glennville; brothers and sister - in - law, Charles and Louise Fields of Claxton and Donald Rogers of San Francisco, CA; special caregiver and friend, Amy Jones of Claxton and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 9, 2008, at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Jimmy Haire and Reverend Harold Smith officiating. Burial followed in Bull Creek Church Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were Jill Griffin and the staff of Northspring Assisted Living and the Directors of the Evans County Wildlife Club.
Remembrances may be made to Ogeechee Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA, 30458; or American Cancer Society, 4425 Hwy 280, Claxton, GA 30417.

George Cozad Starcher, 94

George Cozad Starcher, 94, passed away Monday, February 11, 2008, at his residence under the care of Pearls of Life Hospice. He was born in West Virginia and lived in Prattville, Alabama, before moving to Glennville ten years ago. George had lived a very interesting life, retiring from the Federal Government as a Soil Conservationist with 25 years of service. He worked with an orphanage in Talladega, AL; Pratlow Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL; Georgia’s Experiment Station in Griffin and a shipyard in Mobile, AL. After retirement he tried his hand at dairy farming, professional photography, sign painting and newspaper writing, where he wrote a column for The Glennville Sentinel called “By George”.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Montez Swindell Starcher.
He is survived by a son and daughter - in - law, George Alan and Carol Starcher of Birmingham, AL; daughter, Lillian Burtram Blake of Glennville; four grandchildren, six great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2008, from the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home with Reverend Vance Riggins officiating. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Paul Thornhill, Ronnie DeLoach, Willie DeLoach, Gerald Blocker, Justin Foster and Ron DeLoach.
Remembrances may be made to Peals of Life Hospice, 215 South Duval St., Claxton, GA, 30417 or Glennville United Methodist Church, 116 South Caswell St., Glennville, GA, 30427.

John Arthur Stevens, 89

Mr. John Arthur Stevens, 89, was born to Willie and Rachel Williams on January 27, 1919, in Liberty County, Georgia. He passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville.
He lived most of his life in Hinesville and worked at Liberty ICE Company for 40 years. He was a member at First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully on the Usher Board.
He is survived by nine nieces, Nettie Leigh Hewlett (William) of Boston, MA, Catherine Roberts (Leon) of Philadelphia, PA, Luvenia Green, Jacquelyn Green, both of Hinesville, GA, Earthaline Palmer of Delaware, Lottie M. Freeman of Hollywood, FL, Mary Bobbins of Savannah, GA, Juilette Jones of Atlanta, GA, Rachel Ash of Hinesville, GA; one godson, Gregory Wilson (Falicia) of Las Vegas, NV; a special friend and neighbor, Mr. Eddie Wilson of Hinesville, GA.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 9, 2008, at 2 p.m. at First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Hinesville with Rev. Sinclair L. Thorne officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
The deacons of First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church served as pallbearers.
King and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Rafael Volpe, 73

Mr. Rafael Volpe, 73, passed away, Tuesday afternoon, February 5, 2008, at his residence under the care of Community Hospice.
The Puerto Rico native had lived in New York for many years, prior to moving to Reidsville 22 years ago. He was a Head Chef for the Rocking Horse Ranch in New York for 35 years and recently retired from Toombs Middle School. He was a member of the Lake View Full Gospel Praise and Worship Center in Reidsville.
He is survived by his children, Rafael Volpe Alvarado, Rosalina Volpe Alvarado, Nancy C. Volpe Alvarado, and John D. Volpe Alvarado; grandchildren, Jessica I. Mercado Volpe, Jesus A. Mercado Volpe, Kenia Robles, Danny Torres, Maritza Torres, and Yasmin Torres; great - grandchildren, Alexia Jadiel Negron Mercado; and a sister, Nora Peceo.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 9, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Lake View Full Gospel Praise and Worship Church with Pastors, E.V. Jenkins and Carlos Volpe officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.

Carl James Willis, 51

Carl James Willis, 51, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at his home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Toombs County native had lived in Reidsville most of his life, prior to moving to Glennville one year ago. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections after twenty - five years of service. He attended Abundant Faith Pentecostal Fellowship in Reidsville.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Willis of Glennville; two sons and daughter - in - law, Pat and Sarah Willis and Jordan Willis, all of Reidsville; two daughters and son - in - law, Crystal and Daniel Crummey of Glennville and Mandy Willis of Reidsville; his parents, James and Eileen Willis of Reidsville; a sister, Teresa Hutcheson of Reidsville; five grandchildren, Tristan, Isaac, Aidan and Andrew Willis of Reidsville and Lily Ann Crummey of Glennville; several aunts, uncles, nieces.
Pallbearers were Randal Murray, Joey Anderson, Dean Wright, Lang Dunham, Preston Arnold and Gary Curl. Honorary pallbearers were Georgia Department of Corrections Honor Guard.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 9, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, with Rev. John Price and Rev. Lester Whitehead officiating. Interment followed in the Reidsville City Cemetery.
Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alan Dwight Church, 67

Alan Dwight Church, 67, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Center in Statesboro. The Ohio native retired from the U.S. Army with 20 years service. He was a member of the VFW and a Master Mason at Camp Knox Lodge #919 in Radcliff, Kentucky.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Mae Church of Glennville; son, David Church of Gaithersburg, MD; granddaughter, Heather Church of Hanover, PA.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 22, 2008, at Smyrna Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Edward Brannen officiating, with full Military Honors and Masonic Rites.

Dillard Crume, Jr., 72

Dillard Crume, Jr., 72, of Reidsville, died Friday, March 21, 2008, at his residence. He was a native of Portageville, MO, and grew up in Chicago, IL. He resided in Tattnall County for more than 20 years and was a member of Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church in Reidsville.
He was a professional musician and singer. His career began when he and six of his brothers formed a gospel group called “The Crume Brothers.” His singing career spanned over 63 years and included singing and playing with the “Five Blind Boys” of Mississippi and the “Highway QCs” of Chicago. In 1976, Dillard became the lead singer and producer of the world famous “Soul Stirrers” of Chicago, Ill.
Dillard ministered God’s word in song extensively throughout the United States, throughout Western Europe, the Caribbean Islands, Canada, France, and Japan.
He was inducted as an honoree into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”
He leaves to cherish his never - to - be - forgotten memory, his loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Carolyn Crume; four lovely daughters, Mrs. Pamela (Rodney) Allen of Park Forest, Illinois, Mrs. Monica Crume of Michigan City, Indiana, Mrs. Christina (Rasul “Kojo”) Cromwell of Norwalk, Connecticut, and Ms. Melanie Crume of Reidsville, GA; one step - daughter, Ms. Vanessa Sharpe of Reidsville, GA; one son, Mr. Ryine Bartley of North Charleston, SC; one sister, Ms. Anna L. Meeks of Chicago, Illinois; five brothers, Amos Crume, Michigan City, IN, Arthur Crume and Rufus (Betty) Crume of Reidsville, GA, Leroy Crume of Ocala, FL, and Rev. Floyd (Betty) Crume of Los Angeles, CA; four brothers - in - law, Mr. Rufus Meeks of Chicago, Illinois, Mr. David (Brenda) Smith of Fayetteville, NC, Mr. James (Bertha) Smith of Atlanta, GA, Mr. Gary (Bernadine) Smith of Suffolk, VA, and Mr. Thurman Smith of Denver, CO; four sisters - in - law, Mrs. Frances (Forrest) Jordan of Marietta, GA, Ms. Ernestine Gordon of Fort Pierce, FL, Mrs. Sandra (Paul) Dickey of Minneapolis, MN, and Mrs. Charlene Crume of Orlando, FL; eight grandchildren, Denero Jones and Charmaine Crume of Michigan City, IN, Brandon Williams of Reidsville, GA, Roderick and Eric Wright of Park Forest, Illinois, Pheonecia, Ja - Ala, and Alannah Cromwell of Norwalk, Connecticut. A dear friend, who was just like a brother, Mr. Gary Blackshear of Hawkinsville, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. And his extended family - the children of the late Mr. Handy Kennedy of Cobbtown, GA.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at the Greater Bethel A.M.E. Interment followed in the Robert Chapel Cemetery, in Reidsville, GA, in the Tyson Community.
Pallbearers were Brother Gary Blackshear, Brother Eddie Huffman Jr., Brother Roy Summerset, Minister Lewis Butler, Brother Al Gaines, Brother Benjamin Kennedy, Brother Charles Kennedy and Brother Mike Kennedy. Honorary pallbearers were The Soul Stirrers of Chicago, IL. Also, there was an Honor Guard from the United States Army.
Whitaker Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of the arrangements.
