Linda Wood

Linda Wood, 60 of Monroe died January 4, 2006.

She was born in Raleigh County, W.Va. October 31, 1945 to the late Thomas Elmer Fortner and the late Ruth Kathleen Walker Fortner Hatcher.

Surviving are husband: David Wood of Monroe; daughters: Carla Waddell of Monroe and Alicia Peppers of Winder; son: Tim Waddell of Dawsonville; sister: Karen Brewster of Concord, N.C.; brother and sister-in-law: Rick and Linda Fortner of Beckley, W.Va.; six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lighthouse World Outreach Center with The Rev. Raymond Hardy officiating. Pallbearers were: Carlton Swords, David Butler, Larry Lewis, Joe Lowe, Chris Worrell, and Zack Nesbitt.

Contributions can be made to the Lighthouse School of Ministry, P.O. Box 1596, Monroe, Ga. 30655.

Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Lynn Davis

Lynn Davis, 70 of Monroe, died on Jan. 4, 2006, She was born in Cobb County on Oct. 13, 1935 to the late Virgil Henry Frey and the late Florence Mulkey Frey.

Surviving are: husband: John Arthur Davis, Monroe; daughter and son-in-law: Nancy and Greg Purves, Lawrenceville; son and daughter-in-law: Richard and Paula Davis, Lawrenceville; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Dr. Thom Allen and the Rev. Hoyt Johnson officiating. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Davis Scott, Michael Scott, Marcus Chaffin, Trae Davis, Andy Davis and Chris Davis.

Meadows Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Pauline P. Hataway

Pauline P. Hataway, 95 of Monroe died December 29, 2005.

A native of Walton County, she was the daughter of the late Calvin R. and Ida Rowe Palmer. The widow of Orrin W. Hataway, she was a homemaker and was a member of Campton United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held Dec. 31 in Campton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Geoff Grubbs and The Rev. Benson Bottoms officiated and interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Shannon Broach, Steven Broach, Tony Gunnels, Ray Broach, Don Hataway, Brad Huff and Bryce Huff.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law: Linda and Thomas Parker and Dot and Alton Broach all of Monroe; daughters-in-law: Betty Hataway of Monroe and Joann Hataway of Athens; eight grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by sons, Robert C. Hataway and Donald Hataway.

Sarah Hazel Smith

Sarah Hazel Smith, 85 of Colbert, Ga. died on December 29, 2005

Mrs. Smith was a native of Oconee County, the daughter of the late Seab and Floy Eberhart Hardman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Ford Smith.

She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Wrightsville, Ga.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Carl Smith of Athens; son and daughter-in-law: Calvin and Kitty Smith of Monroe; grandsons and wives: Michael and Amy Smith of Dacula, Lt. Cmdr. Bo and Nancy Palmer, Coronado, Calif.; Adam Palmer. Monroe; great-grandson: Jackson Palmer, Coronado, Calif.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 2, 2006 in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home with The Rev. Royce McNeal officiating. Interment followed at the New Cemetery in Washington County.

Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 W. Peachtree St, Suite 100, Atlanta, Ga., 30309.

Bridges Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Sonjia K. Rottier

Sonjia K. Rottier, 58 of Fremont, Mich. died December 23, 2005.

A native of Pennington Gap, Va. she was the daughter of the late Cecil Shelburne. She was a partner in Rottier Accounting & Tax Service and was a member of First Christian Reform Church of Fremont.

Funeral services were held Dec. 27, in the First Christian Reform Church. The Rev. Allen Petroelje officiated. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Fremont, Mich.

She is survived by her husband: James R. Rottier’ three children: Richard (Amy) Rottier of Allendale, Mich, Brian Rottier of Hesparia, Mich and Tiffany Cecil McDonald of Jesup, Ga. ; her mother: Susie Shelburne of Monroe, Ga. ; sisters: Melinda (Wayne) Quinn of Monroe and Cecilia (Phil) Goforth of Loganville; one grandchild.

Memorials are requested to the Fremont Area Community Foundation for the First Christian Reform Church Endowment.

Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

William “Ben” Knox

William “Ben” Knox, 85 a retired salesman of Conyers, died January 6, 2006.

He is survived by wife of 64 years: Sybil Knox, Conyers; daughters and sons-in-law: Linda and Wesley Cobb, Mansfield, Cynthia and Walt Barr, Social Circle, Kathy Knox, Elijay; son and daughter-in-law: Bob and Trisha Knox, Chatsworth; six grandchildren: Scott Cobb, Jennifer Cobb, Tamara and Tim Haase, Jason and Kelly Barr, Brandon Barr, Jake Knox and Aaron Knox; four great-grandchildren: Kaitlin, Krista and Kyle Cobb, Katherine Haase.

Mr. Knox was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Conyers. He was a life member and a past president of ASHRAE and RSES.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 10 at Salem Untied Methodist Church with The Rev. Randy Kanipe officiating. Contributions may be made to Salem Untied Methodist Church Building fund, 3962 Salem Rd. Covington, Ga. 30016.

Robert ‘Bruce’ Sears
Bruce Sears, 42 formerly of Monroe passed away Dec. 27 at his home with his loving family in Panama City Beach, Fl. Bruce is survived by: his wife Lori Sears; four children: Timothy Bruce 18, Stacy Ann 16, Elizabeth 14, and Aimee Marie 13; two brothers: Bernie and David; one sister: Donna and father: Maurice Sears.

Walter Alex Granholm
Walter Alex Granholm, 87 of Loganville, a retired commercial artist, died Dec. 30, 2005. He was born on June 6, 1918 in Greenwood MS where he graduated from Greenwood High School. he completed his advanced art studies at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh; and as a Commercial Artist, he produced art work for National Advertising Campaigns for many companies including, Coca-Cola, Southern Airways and Chick-fil-A. He served his country in World War II in the Army Air Corps, from 1939 to 1945.

Caroline Crawley
Caroline Crawley, 85 of St. Marys died Dec. 27, 2005 at the Life Care Center of Hilliard after and extended illness. She was born to the late Vernon and Carrie Keener Smith on July 31, 1920 in Atlanta, Ga. She was married to the late Harry Crawley for 40 years, who was an attorney and Judge in Thomaston, GA. She had been a resident of St. Marys for the past 13 years coming from Social Circle. Caroline retired form teaching after 45 years of service and she was a former Elder in the Presbyterian Church. Caroline was preceded in death by a daughter Barbara Elaine Crawley.

Clyde E. Adkins, 82 of Monroe, died Friday Dec. 23, 2005. Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home. The Rev. Glen Money officiated. Burial followed at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville. Mr. Adkins was a WWII Army Veteran, retired after 14 years of service as a shop teacher with Gwinnett County Schools and was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe.

Heather Lynn Dalton, age 25, died on Tuesday, December 20, 2005. She attended Jersey Holiness Church. She enjoyed playing all types of sports. She formerly played softball, basketball, and ran track at Eastside High School. She made the all star team every year and won numerous awards for sports throughout her life. In 1994 she played in the USAA softball world series.

Sara Ozburn, 88. of Social Circle died on Dec. 27, 2005. She was born on Oct. 20, 1917 in Rockdale County to the late Ewell Bedford Adams and the late Janie Conner Adams. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Alex “Pearl” Ozburn. Surviving are: sister: Grace Knight, Social Circle; brother-in-law: Eugene “Sonny” Sidwell, Madison; four nieces; six nephews; several great nieces and great nephews.

James Frederick (Fred) Bolinger
Lt. Col. (Retired) James Frederick (Fred) Bolinger, 71, of Philadelphia, MS died Dec. 18, 2005. A native of Middlesboro, KY, he was the son of the late A.D. and Ethel Powell Bolinger. Retired from the U.S. Air Force, he was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was one of three hundred people in the United States to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of the First Methodist Church.

Lamar Parker, former Monroe City councilman died Dec. 24, 2005 He was 76. A native of Walton County, he was the son of the late Clarence R. Parker and Florine Satterfield Parker. A former mayoral candidate, he was retired from American General Life Insurance Co., having received LUTCF designation and served as president of the Monroe Life Underwriters Assn. He was a member and deacon of Walker Baptist Church and served in the National Guard. He was a member of Generous Warren Lodge # 20 F. & A.M. and had served as American Red Cross Director at one time.

Pamela Blake Aro, 50 of Monroe died Dec. 26, 2005. Mrs. Aro was preceded in death by her father (Former State Representative) A.J. Blake. She was a member of Pell City First United Methodist Church and a 1973 graduate of Pell City High School. She was also a volunteer of with the American Red Cross, a great wife, a loving mother and grandmother.

Allen Cox
Allen Cox, 47 of Covington died December 20, 2005. The son of the late Charles William Cox, he was born in Fulton County and was a native of Carrollton. Allen loved the Lord and enjoyed reading and studying His word. He strived to bring glory to Him daily. Allen was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. He cherished family time. He loved watching his son perform with the George Walton Academy marching band and his daughter play the piano. He also enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jerome Cox.

Georgia B. Stark, 94 of Monroe died December 18, 2005. A native of Walton County, she was a daughter of the late Walter L. Brown, Sr. and Daisy Malcom Brown. The widow of Foster Stark, she was retired from the Monroe-Walton Mill and was a former employee of Carwood Mfg. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Orene G. White, 90 of Loganville died December 20, 2005. A native of Walton County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Lant Guntrie, Sr. and Lucy Still Guthrie. The widow of Clarence E. White, she was a homemaker and was a member of Sharon Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Dec. 22 in Sharon Baptist Church. The Rev. Glenn Stephens and The Rev. Horace Parr officiated and interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Leonard Greene, Jeff Guthrie, Dennis Perry, Justin Starrett, Tony Greene and Gary Greene.

Beatrice Everett

Beatrice Everett, 72, of Monroe, died on Jan. 24, 2006. She was born in Wake County, NC on Aug. 3, 1933 to the late Lewis David Wilson and the late Undine Faison Wilson Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Curtis Everett.

Surviving are: daughters and sons-in-law: Sheila and Frank Conner, Monroe; and Susan and D. W. Stone, Bostwick; son: David Everett, Mt. Vernon; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 2 pm at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Yancey officiating. Interment followed at Appalachee Baptist Church Cemetery.

William Starr Miller

William Starr Miller, 84 of Newnan and Plainville died suddenly Thursday, January 26, 2006.

Dr. Miller was a retired educator whose career spanned more than 40 year. He was President Emeritus of Brewton-Parker College where he had served twice as president, and was Dean Emeritus of the School of Education of Georgia Southern University where he served for 18 years. His educational service, beginning in the public schools of Gordon County, also included an administrative and teaching role at Young Harris College, as well as service as Academic Dean of Tift College. It was during his presidency at Brewton-Parker that the college offered its first senior college program.

An activist for retired persons, Miller has served as the Georgia State Director of the American Association of Retired Persons and as president of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association.

Miller’s various leadership roles have included serving as Chair of the Board of the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, Chair of the Education Commission of the Georgia Baptist Convention, Chair of the Deacons of First Baptist Church of Statesboro, Chair of the Georgia Accrediting Commission for Georgia schools, President of the Georgia Association of Colleges, and President of the Southern Council of Teachers Education of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Though Miller held and earned a doctorate from Duke University, he often cited as a most appreciated recognition the honorary doctorate that his colleagues of Brewton-Parker College later presented him. The Miller Music Building of Brewton-Parker College was built during his tenure as president and carries that name as an honor to him and his late wife, Sarah Fallin Miller. Other recognitions include the Flowers Educational Leadership Award of Georgia Southern University, the Alumni Achievement Award of West Georgia College and the Citizen of the Year Award of the Montgomery County Lions Club. Each year, the Georgia Accrediting Commission gives the “Starr Miller Distinguished Service Award” in his honor.

Miller was the author of articles in many professional journals, as well as one professional book published by the Southern regional Education Board. He served on numerous professional committees and, in retirement, ran a private educational consulting service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Bessie Miller; and a spouse, Sarah Fallin Miller.

W. Starr Miller is survived by his wife, Luine Wilson Baxter Miller of Newnan; two children: Charles Starr Miller of Atlanta and Melanie Stokes of Ludowici; a son-in-law: Steve Stokes of Ludowici; two grandchildren: Mark Stokes of Mt. Vernon and Luke Stokes of Waco, Texas; a granddaughter-in-law: Nicky Stokes of Waco, Texas; a sister: Charlcie Grace Connell of Plainville; two nephews: Gregg Connell of Calhoun and Gale Connell of Plainville’ two step-children: Jeff Baxter of Atlanta and Lori Schleicher of Charlotte, N.C.; and many other relatives.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, at Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro. A memorial service followed at 4 p.m. in Saliba Chapel of Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial tributes be sent to: Brewton-Parker College, Mt. Vernon, Ga. 30445, designated for the Newnan Campus or the Miller Music Building Expansion Project.
