Mrs. Mae Jewel Towns of Hill Street in Newnan passed away July 20, 1997 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Sellers-Smith Funeral Home.


Mr. Luther Whatley of Newnan passed away July 19, 1997 at Peachtree Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Sellers-Smith Funeral Home.


Mr. Roosevelt Teagle of Duluth passed away July 21, 1997 in Duluth. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Sellers-Smith Funeral Home.


Mr. Wesley Culpepper Murphy II, 41 of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. died July 2, 1997.

Born Oct. 3, 1955 in Atlanta, Mr. Murphy was the son of the late Joel T. Murphy Sr. and the grandson of the late Mildred Darden, M.J. Walker, Louise Culpepper and B. Deon Murphy Sr.

He was a graduate of Valdosta State College and was employed by Delta Air Lines. A memorial service was held July 10 at Fayetteville City Cemetery with Dr. Sam Matthews officiating. Survivors include his mother Marion W. Murphy; brother, Joel Murphy; sister, Shelley Murphy; and nephew, Trevor Garner.

Master King Oliver Newton of Atlanta, passed away July 11, 1997 at South Fulton Hospital in East Point.

Master Newton was born June, 19, 1997.

Graveside services were held July 14 at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Felton James officiating.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. King (Valerie Woods) Newton; brother, Nicholas Newton; grandparents, Catherine Woods if Newnan. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis (Elizabeth) Newton of Douglas; great-grandmother, Elma Griffin of Newnan; aunts; uncles and cousins.

Mr. Albert Lee Patrick, 44, of Newnan passed away July 14, 1997 at Hospice Atlanta.

Mr. Patrick was born Jan. 1, 1953 in Coweta County.

Funeral services were held July 18 at Summer Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Coleman officiating, assisted by the Rev. Azell Warner and the Rev. R.W. Sutton. Interment followed at the church cemetery with family friends serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include his father, James Patrick Sr. of Newnan; daughters, Kizzee Iman Patrick of West Palm Beach, Fla., Stephanie Woods of Newnan; brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Wynetta) Patrick, Mr. and Mrs. Azell (Gloria) Patrick of Newnan, Mr. and Mrs. William (Michelle) Patrick of Florida, Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Lee (Shirley) Patrick, Mr. and Mrs. James (Thelma) Patrick of Atlanta, Joe Louis Patrick of Newnan; sisters, Mr. and Mrs. John L. (Lucile) Grady of Newnan, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy (Maryann) Rosser of South Carolina, Louise Patrick, Catherine Patrick of Newnan; step-daughters, Terria Smith of Florida, Lantanya Gleaton of Newnan; aunts, Ruth Bailey of Newnan, Catherine Glenn of Atlanta, Ollie Mae Novels of Detroit, Mich.; great aunts, Susie Ward, Alma Ward; great uncles, Squire Patrick, Robert Patrick of Thomaston; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Mr. Robert L. Rosser of Highland Park Drive in Newnan passed away July 15 at his home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Roscoe Jenkins Funeral Home.


Mr. Clovis Barber, 78, of Luthersville, died Friday, July 11, 1997, at Newnan Hospital.

Mr. Barber was born on May 6, 1919, in Meriwether County, son of the late John Kiser Barber and the late Nannie Hayes Barber. He was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County, was a retired farmer, and was a member of Faith Baptist Church in the Primrose Community of Meriwether County.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon, July 14, at Bethel Baptist Church in the Rocky Mount Community of Meriwether County. The Rev. Henry Calhoun and the Rev. Carl Calhoun officiated and interment was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Cleveland Barber, James Barber, Michael Bluin, Kenneth Rice, Tommy Youngblood, Eddie McCullough, Tim Payton and James Calhoun.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Josie Mae Calhoun Barber of Luthersville; daughters, Mrs. Mary Ann Creed and Mrs. Frances Calhoun, both of Hogansville, and Mrs. Gladys Hannah of Luthersville; sons, John C. "Bubba" Barber of Lone Oak, Billy Barber of Luthersville, and Robert Barber of LaGrange; sisters, Mrs. Mary Massey and Mrs. Mildred Crews, both of Greenville; brothers, Eugene Barber of Greenville, Lindsey Barber of Luthersville, Robert Lewis Barber of Oklahoma, and John K. Barber Jr. of Dalton; 17 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Mr. George E. Beadles, 61, of 5 Taylor St., Newnan, passed away July 3, 1997, at Southwest Christian Hospice in Union City, Ga.

Mr. Beadles was born April 27, 1936, to the late Jessie Beadles and Annie L. Woodard in Atlanta, Ga. After serving in the United States Army, he returned to Newnan and graduated from high school in 1959. He was employed at Starcrest Nursing Home for 21 years.

He joined the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, where he served faithfully until his health failed.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 9, from the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie D. Washington, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Charles Beadles and the Rev. R. W. Sutton.

Burial was in Powell Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery. Serving as casketbearers were the Mount Sinai Board of Deacons.

He is survived by a devoted aunt, Mrs. Hattie Moten; sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Strozier (Eleanor) and Ms. Hattie Beadles; brother, Jessie Beadles Jr.; aunt, Mrs. Leila Brothers; nieces, nephews, cousins.

Mrs. Lillie Mae Hearn Crouch, 94, died July 12, 1997, at Newnan Hospital.

Born June 30, 1903 in Goodes Community, Old Campbell County, Georgia, she was the daughter of Pernal Joseph and Rosa Lee Smith Hearn. She moved to Roscoe in northern Coweta County at the age of three and continued to reside there throughout her life. She was a member of First Christian Church of Newnan and was previously employed at Newnan Hosiery Mill and Moreland Knitting Mill for approximately 28 years.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 14 at the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Lindsey Herndon officiating, assisted by Clay Henry and Duke Jones officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.

Pallbearers were Sonny Warren, Earl Holder, Greg Ferrell, James Brantley, Alan Fain and Larry Gresham.

Survivors include her daughter, Hilda Crouch Ferrell of Newnan; granddaughter, Nancy Ferrell Neal and her husband Max Neal, of Newnan; great-granddaughters, Jennifer Leigh Neal and Amy Rebecca Neal of Newnan; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Durward Ettlison Crouch; son-in-law Robert H. "Buck" Ferrell Sr.; and grandson Robert H. Ferrell Jr.

Mr. Leonard Godfrey Jr., 49, of 188 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Newnan, passed away July 5, 1997, at Newnan Hospital.

He was born April 9, 1948, to the late Leonard Godfrey Sr. and Catherine Godfrey in Gay, Ga., Meriwether County. He attended the Meriwether County Public School System and later moved to Coweta County, Newnan, where he met and married Earnestine Godfrey Dec. 22, 1968. They had three children, one of whom, Master Sherman Leonard Godfrey, preceded him in death.

Mr. Godfrey worked faithfully for 25 years at the William L Bonnell Company and was most-recently employed at U.S. Can Company.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 9, from Sellers-Smith R. W. S. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Tilden Colton officiating, assisted by Bishop Colton and Rev. Alvin Godfrey. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery.

Serving as honorary casketbearers were Nathaniel Gray, Rodney Reese, Nate Domineck, James Connally and Arthur Crain. Serving as active casketbearers were Henry Coleman, Tavaris Brown, Jimmy Wilkerson, Jerome Godfrey, Joe Prather and Bernard Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Earnestine Godfrey; children, Mr. and Mrs. Kelvin Godfrey (Maurice) and Mr. Michael Godfrey of Newnan; granddaughter, Oneisha Bresha Godfrey; sisters, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Jackson (Dorothy) and Ms. Katie Ann Godfrey of Atlanta, Ga; brothers, Mr. Robert Boddie and Mr. Willaim Godfrey of Newnan, Ga., Mr. and Mrs. Joe Henry Godfrey (Barbara Ann) of Fayetteville, N.C., Mr. John Arthur Godfrey, Riverdale, Ga., and Mr. George Godfrey of Gay, Ga.; a devoted aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Lee McGruder (Aunt Tee) of Luthersville, Ga.; sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Fann (Joan) of Atlanta, Ga., Ms. Theodora Stegall and Ms. Lavoria Lovett of Newnan, Ga.; brother-in-law, Mr. Charles R. Wilkes, Newnan; god-daughters, Ms. Wander A. Geter, Atlanta, Mrs. Carl Stinson and Ms. Lashandria Peek of Newnan; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Odie William Hannah, 86, of Emmett Young Road in Newnan died July 5, 1997 at Newnan Hospital.

Born Feb. 23, 1911 in Carroll County, Mr. Hannah was the son of the late Robert Frank Hannah and Ida Elizabeth (Howard) Hannah. He was a member of Moreland United Methodist Church and a retired farmer.

Funeral services were held July 6 at Moreland United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Brackman officiating, assisted by the Rev. Patrick Jansen.

Interment followed at Southview Cemetery in Moreland with Marvin Horseley, Waymon Hand, Mike Smith, Alex Davis, Harry Landreth and Joe Lewis serving as pallbearers. Marvin Williams, Alfred Daniels, Royce Williams and Don Randall were honorary pallbearers.

Survivors include his wife, Merle (Haynes) Hannah of Newnan; sisters-in-law, Marguerite Hannah of Newnan, Ruby Hannah, Reba Hannah, both of Carrollton, Emma Wiles of Moreland, Ida Lou Haynes; nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made to Moreland United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Saddie Mae Harden, 80, of 84 Savannah St., Newnan, passed away July 7, 1997 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Ga.

She was born May 13, 1917 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Booker. She joined the Old Mount Bethlehem Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of the Rev. R. B. Strozier.

She was married to the late Mr. Lucious Harden on May 18, 1946 and to this union seven children were born.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 11, from the Old Mount Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. J. T. Coleman officiating, assisted by the Rev. Emory Hawkins, the Rev. Henry Teagle and the Rev. J. E. Farmer. Burial was in Eastview Cemetery.

Serving as casketbearers were J. C. Brooks, Harvey Brooks, Howard Brooks, Berry Ballard, Marion Prather and Joseph Prather.

Survivors include daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Benny Prather (Adrene), Mrs. Saddie Edwards, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Town (Mary), Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Strickland (Patricia); sons, Mr. James L. Harden, Mr. Rayford Harden and Mr. Larry Harden; 23 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
