Mr. Ernest Jeffery Williams

Mr. Ernest Jeffery Williams, 73, of Detroit, Mich., formerly of Palmetto, passed away Oct. 8, 1997 at Mercy Hospital in Detroit.

Born Dec. 10, 1923, Mr. Williams was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mozelle B. Williams and the husband of the late Elsie Juene Wilkas. He was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers.

Mr. Williams attended Palmetto High School and Ramah Baptist Church. After serving in the U.S. Army, he moved to Detroit where he worked for Chrysler Corporation before retiring. He later joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Oct. 18 at J.S. Hammond Missionary Baptist Church in Palmetto with the Rev. W.R. Starks officiating. Interment followed at Floral Hill Cemetery in Palmetto with Hayward Williams Jr., Lawrence Williams, Crawford Hill, Ernest Terry, Hayward Williams III and Willie Solomon serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include a brother, Hayward Williams Sr.; sister. Mattie Airlene Slaughter; six sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; nieces; nephews and cousins.

Mr. C.E. "Pete" Hendrix

Mr. C. E. "Pete" Hendrix, 86, of Hogansville, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Mr. Hendrix was born Oct. 21, 1910 in Meriwether County. He was the son of the late William Elisha Hendrix and the late Mae Hendricks Hendrix. He lived in Hogansville for 62 years and was a member and deacon of Highland Baptist Church. He retired from Uniroyal, Inc. after 42 years of service.

The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Highland Baptist Church in Hogansville. The Rev. Max McCord and Dr. Jimmy Brown will officiate, and interment will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.

Pallbearers will be Mike Hawkins, Henry Jones, Perrin Alford, Randy Hardigree, Jim Wayland, Sammy Dodson and J. M. Hendrix.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mildred C. Hendrix of Hogansville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mrs. Peggy Comer of Norcross and the Rev. and Mrs. Max (Marion) McCord of LaGrange; son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bob (Beth) Hendrix of Muscle Shoals, Ala.; sister, Mrs. Nettie Notz of Phoenix, Arizona; three brothers, Everett Hendrix of Newnan, N. H. Hendrix of Hogansville, and Leroy Hendrix of Marietta; six granddaughters, Mrs. Bonnie Jones, Mrs. Susan Hawkins, Mrs. Sharon Alford and Mrs. Stacey Hardigree, all of LaGrange, Mrs. Tracy Wayland of Birmingham, Ala., and Mrs. Alison Dodson of Muscle Shoals, Ala.; eleven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ruby K. Williamson

Mrs. Ruby King Williamson, 92, of Grantville, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997 at Starcrest Convalescent Center in Newnan.

Mrs. Williamson was born Sept. 26, 1905 in Meriwether County. She was the daughter of the late Will and Effie King. She lived at Grantville for 47 years, was a member of Yellow Dirt Bapitst Church in Heard County, and was wife of the late Hope H. Williamson.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Willard Dean will officiate, and interment will be in the Grantville Cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Lois W. Jackson of Grantville; sister, Mrs. Grace Mobley of Texas; brother, Sidney King of Newnan; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary Hall Shierling

Mrs. Mary Hall Shierling, 84, of Chestnut Drive in Newnan died Oct. 20, 1997, at her home.

Born March 8, 1913 in Carroll County, Mrs. Shierling was the wife of the late Rev. Stacy Hall and Lawrence Shierling. She was a retired textile worker.

A service was held Oct. 20 at McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Dwight Moody officiating, assisted by the Rev. David Dixon. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Imogene and Willie Faulkner of Newnan, Icie and Walter Hood of Fairburn; son and daughter-in-law, Milton and Letha Hall of Newnan; daughters, Marian Thompson of Newnan, Bonnie H. Garmany of Augusta; brothers, Herbert Chambers, Olin Chambers, both of Roopville; sisters, Johnnie Mae Hightower of Bowdon, Myrl Morris of Carrollton; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Miss Margaret "Maggie" Lane

Miss Margaret "Maggie" Lane, 36, of Millard Farmer Road in Newnan died Oct. 21, 1997, in Coweta County.

Born Oct. 12, 1961 in Carroll County, Miss Lane was a graduate of Carrollton High School and earned an associate's degree in drafting from Carroll Technical Institute. During a 10-year law enforcement career, she worked with the Clayton County Sheriff's Office, the Austell Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.

Miss Lane was working at the Coweta County Sheriff's Office at the time of her death. She was preceded in death by sisters, Dr. Melanie Lane of Danville, Ind. and Lisa Lane of Carrollton.

A service will be held Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Carrollton with police honors. The Rev. Harry Tysinger will officiate, assisted by the Rev. David Epps.

Interment will follow at Carroll Memory Gardens with Coweta County sheriff's deputies serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fodor of Carrollton, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Grady Lane of Atlanta; sister, Mr. and Mrs. Benjie (Michelle) Alexander of Tyrone; brother-in-law, Tom Davis of Danville; grandmother, Margaret New of Carrollton; and nieces, Maeve Davis, Gwynne Davis, both of Danville, and Abbey Alexander of Tyrone.

Memorial contributions can be made ton the Coweta County Sheriff's Office DARE program.

Mrs. Clara Bowie Denney

Mrs. Clara Bowie Denney, 89, of Newnan died Oct. 23, 1997.

A lifelong resident of Newnan, Mrs. Bowie was retired from East Newnan Cotton Mills and was the widow of Carey N. Denney.

A service will be held Oct. 25 (today) at 11 a.m. in the old sanctuary of First Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Helms and Dr. Gene Tyre officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery with Scotty Bowie, Lahman Moore, Steven Puckett, Charles Moore, Travis Denney and Alan Lambert serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her son, Mr. and Mrs. Sharon (Mary) Denney; daughter, Janet Thames; grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Mark (Joy) Puckett, Mr. and Mrs. William (Carey) Spradlin, Doug Thames; brother, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd (Frances) Bowie; brother-in-law, William Butler; sister-in-law, Florine Bowie; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Louie E. Philpot

Mr. Louie E. Philpot, 85, of Hogansville died Oct. 23, 1997 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

Born Dec. 2, 1911 in Hogansville, Mr. Philpot was the son of the late David Alan Philpot and Ruth Barnes Philpot. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War Two and was a retired auditor from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He was a member of the Methodist faith.

A graveside service will be held Oct. 25 (today) at 5 p.m. at Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville with the Rev. B.L. Philpot officiating.

Survivors include her niece, Maureen Magnan of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; two nephews, the Rev. B.L. Philpot Jr. of Hogansville and David Allen Philpot of Eastville, Va.

Mr. J. Thomas Spears

Mr. J. Thomas Spears, 88, of LaGrange died Oct. 23, 1997, at Hospice LaGrange.

Born July 8, 1909 in Randolph County, Ala., Mr. Spears was the son of the late Robert Alonza Spears and Annie McDonald Spears. He was a retired dairy farmer and a member of Highway Congregational Methodist Church.

A service will be held Oct. 25 (today) at 2 p.m. at Highway Congregational Methodist Church with the Rev. Vernon Willis and the Rev. Wayne Jetton officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Wayne Wilkinson, Gary Spears, Kenneth Andrews, Charlie Andrews, Thomas Garner and Gene Walston serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include his brothers, C.F. Spears, G.H. Spears of Roanoke, Ala.; sisters, Alma Cantrell, Kate B. Andrews, both of LaGrange, Lorene Roberts of Roanoke; nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Betty Fay Lowe Garner

Mrs. Betty Fay Lowe Garner, 50, of Winston died Oct. 24, 1997 at her residence following an extended illness.

Born June 18, 1947 in LaGrange, Mrs. Garner was the daughter of the late George Lowe and the late Mrs. Nina White Lowe. She was general manager of the Mote and Garner Well Boring Company, Helms Brothers Well Boring Company and Banks Well Boring.

She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she was active with the youth, puppet and clown ministries, Christmas drama, children church, bible school, GA's and Jewels of God.

A service will be held today at 3 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Hwy. 166 with the Rev. Mike Powers officiating. Danny Mote will present musical selections. Interment will follow in the Friendship Cemetery with Wayne Thompson, Scott Payne, Josh Agan, Vic Welch, John Ross Rushing and Gene Garland serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her husband, William Janell Garner, whom she married Sept. 21, 1976; two daughters, Angie Daniell of Winston and Mr. and Mrs. Donnie (Wendee) Long of Villa Rica; a son, Jody Jones of Winston, two stepsons, Steve Garner of Stephenson, Ala. and Mr. and Mrs. Chris (Deann) Garner of Temple; two sisters, Jane Webb of Newnan and her twin, Kay Bugg of Grantville, nine grandchildren, Glenn Mark Ellis II, Brandy Ellis, Andrew Ivey, D.L. Long, Chris Jones, Alicia Ellerbee, Andrea Ellerbee, Brandon Garner and Kel Garner; nieces and nephews.
