Ruth Knight Boss

Mrs. Ruth Knight Boss, age 93, of Monroe, formerly of Covington, died March 8, 2006.

She had lived in Newton County and in the Covington Mill area of Covington for over fifty years before moving to Monroe.

Mrs. Boss is survived by nieces and nephews, Sammie and Martha Knight of Monroe, Gene and Patsy Knight of Loganville, Jerry and Linda Knight of Monticello, Mackie Knight of Snellville and other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Boss were held Friday, March 10, 2006 at 2:00PM from Corinth Christian Church with The Rev. Don Hardison, The Rev. Lester Waters and The Rev. Don Malcom officiating. Interment followed at Corinth memorial Gardens.

Serving as pallbearers were Danny Boss, Ray Cheek, Bill Entrekin, Keith Knight, Kevin Knight and R.C. Herring.

J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Directors were in charge of the arrangements.

Billy Ray Ashe

Billy Ray Ashe, Jr., 47 of Monroe died March 5, 2006.

A native of Fulton County, he was the son of the late Billy Ray Ashe, Sr. and Hazel Casey Ashe. A former resident of Palmetto, GA., he was a construction worker and resided in Monroe for the past year and a half.

The remains were cremated. A private family service will be held later.

He is survived by sons: Brent Ashe of Molena, Chad Ashe of Loganville and Richard Ashe of Thomaston; sisters: Marlene Taylor and Dwanda Burson both of Monroe; nieces and nephews.

Joan Tarpley Queen

Joan Tarpley Queen, 79, of High Shoals, died March 6, 2006 in the comfort of her own home, after an extended illness.

Born in Clarke County May 28, 1926, Mrs. Queen was the daughter of the late Joel Cleveland and Gussie Evans Tarpley. She lived most of her life in Clarke and Oconee counties. She was employed by Southern Bell for eight years before beginning a family. She was a member of High Shoals Christian Church.

Mrs. Queen is preceded in death by three brothers; Russell, Pete and Hugh Tarpley. Mrs. Queen is survived by her husband of 63 years; celebrated March 3, 2006 ,Joseph M. Queen, Jr.; three children: Deborah Q. and Eddy Tiller, High Shoals, Joe Queen, III, Athens and Clark and Pamela Queen, Bogart; brothers and sisters: Al and Louise Tarpley, Nashville, TN, Louise T. Malcom, Betty and Edward Kenimer, Watkinsville, Tillie Tarpley, Columbia, SC; four grandchildren: Jenny Q. and Jason Rainey, Cory Tiller, Joseph Queen IV, and Alexander Queen; brothers and sisters by marriage: Lillian Q. Cross, Dorothy Q. and Carl Smith, Paul Q. Byrd, Nelda Q. and Don Wilbanks; Diane and the late Mearon Queen. Mrs. Queen’s extended family includes grandchildren: MacKenzie and Marci Anthony and caregivers Carolyn and Anna Williams.

Funeral services were held at Lord & Stephens West Chapel, Wednesday, March 8 at 3pm. Nephews of the Queen and Tarpley families served as pallbearers. Burial. Burial followed in the Queen Cemetery, Good Hope.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to, High Shoals Christian Church, P.O. Box 205, High Shoals, GA 30645.

Lord & Stephens, WEST was in charge of the arrangements.

Charles E. Shipp

Charles E. Shipp, 67, of Lawrenceville died Feb. 28, 2006.

A native of Randolph Co, AL, he was the son of the late William and Jessie Horton Shipp. A 1963 graduate of Auburn University, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War receiving the Air Force Medal. He retired in 1998 as a pilot with Delta Airlines.

Funeral services were held March 3, 2006 in Center Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Marion Prather officiated and interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill Borchert, T.T. Parrish, Fred Beardsley, E.P. Kendal, Bill Middleton and Buddy Sward.

He is survived by his widow: Barbara Treadwell Shipp; sons: Matt Shipp of Dacula and Steve Shipp of Lawrenceville; granddaughter: Allysa Reyes; nieces and nephews.

Ethel Mae Stanley Sorrells

Ethel Mae Stanley Sorrelle, 90, of Monroe, died Friday March 3, 2006

She was born in Lyons, Tombs County, GA and was a member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church.

A memorial service was held Sunday, March 5, at Pleasant Valley united Methodist Church with The Rev. Deborah Griffith officiating.

Mrs. Sorrells gave her body to Emory University Medical School.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law; David and Sandra Sorrells of Monroe; daughter and son-in-law; Dean and Jim Calhoun of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren : Ken and Jeannette Calhoun of Harrisburg, NC; Michael and Erica Calhoun of Pittsboro, NC C; great-grandchildren: Louise and Ben Calhoun of Pittsboro, NC and Joe, Kate and Danielle Calhoun of Harrisburg, NC.

Jewell Stone

Jewell Stone, 88 of Monroe died on March 4, 2006. She was born in Walton County on Aug. 26, 1917 to the late William Elmer Moore and the late Ora Fannie Hogan Moore. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Ike Stone.

Surviving are: daughters and son-in-law: Jenny and Randall Williams, Monroe and Judy Stone Swanner, Monroe; sisters: Lillie Moore, Monroe, Ellen Moore, Monroe and Dot Moore, Monroe; bother: Earl Moore, Sarasota, Fla; step-grandchildren: Zach Williams, Monroe and Leah Lee, Grayson; step-great grandchild: Savannah Lee, Grayson.

Funeral services were held on Monday March 6 at 2pm at Center Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Marion Prather and the Rev. Frank Wilson officiating. Interment followed at Center Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Meadows Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Steven R. Stewart

Steven R. Stewart, age 50, of Covington died Sat. March 4, 2006.

Mr. Stewart was a life-long resident of Newton County.

He had been employed with American Dehydrated Foods since 1983, where he served as Vice President for Procurement.

He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed quail, pheasant, dove and deer hunting.

He was a family man that enjoyed boating on the lakes with his family and motorcycle riding.

Mr. Stewart was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.

Mr. Stewart is survived by wife, Vicki Groves Stewart, Covington, GA. daughters and son-in-law, Rebecca Stewart, Lawrenceville, GA; Stephanie and Bobby Rider, Hoschton, GA; grandson, Austin Stewart Rider.

Memorial services for Mr. Stewart will be held Tues., March 7, 2006 at 1:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church of Social Circle. The Rev. Fred Hall will officiate with interment following at Social Circle City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Walton County 4-H Poultry Team, P.O. Box 151, Monroe, GA 30655

Van G. Whitley

Van G. Whitley, age 85, of Monroe, died Wed. March 1, 2006.

He is survived by daughters, Melanie Whitley, Seattle, WA; and Vannette Whitley Chandler, Stone Mountain; three grandchildren, five great grandchildren.

Mr. Whitley was a native of Atlanta, and was retired from Georgia Power Company after 46 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army as Master Sergeant and received the Rifle Range Award, Bronze Star, Certificate of Merit, European Theater, Infantry Combat Badge, Member of First United Methodist Church of Stone Mountain, President of men’s Bible Class and served on official Board of Stewards.

Entombment Services will be held Saturday March 4th at 1:00 P.M. at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, Snellville, Memorial Services to follow at 2:30 P.M. at Wages & Sons Stone Mountain Chapel.

The Rev. Fred Whitley officiating. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital of Children’s Health Care of Atlanta.

The Family will receive friends Friday from 2:00 until 4:00 and 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Wages & Sons Stone Mountain 770-469-9811

James R. Jordan

James R. Jordan, 80 of Oxford, died Feb. 26, 2006. The son of the late Jettie Arthur and Callie Lillian Amerson Jordan, he was a U.S. Navy Veteran and served on the U.S.S. Langley in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post #77 in Conyers and a member of Zingara Lodge #519 FA&M in Rockdale County. He was a retired pharmaceutical sales representative, and former owner of Jordan’s Grocery in Conyers. He is preceded in death by his sisters: Blanche Jordan and Julia Jordan; brother: Charles Jordan.

Mr. Jordan is survived by his wife of 59 years: Louvinia K. Jordan, Oxford; daughters and sons-in-law: Lillian and Phillip Terrell, Charlottesville, VA. Laura and James Bellis, Reston, VA and Virginia and Dan Latham, Rome, GA, son and daughter-in-law: Neil and Anne Jordan, Thibodaux, LA; grandchildren: Michael Terrell, Kathleen Terrell, Renee Jordan, Paul Jordan, Julia Bellis, Caroline Bellis, Laura Latham, and John Latham; sister: Ruth Linthicum, Randleman, NC.

Graveside services for Mr. Jordan were held Wednesday, March 1 at Lawnwood Memorial Park in Covington with the Rev. Claude Smithmeyer officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Legion National Emergency Fund, P.O. Box 1055 Indianapolis, IN 46206.

Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Annis G. Perry

Annis G. Perry, 82, of Lithonia, formerly of Decatur died Feb. 23, 2006.

A native of Walton County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Lant Guthrie, Sr. and Lucy Still Guthrie. She was a homemaker and was a member of Sharon Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Feb. 25, 2006 in Sharon Baptist Church. The Rev. Horace Parr officiated and interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Leonard Lant Green, terry Lee Herbert, Jeff Guthrie, Dwane Mann, Gary Greene and Tony Greene.

She is survived by daughter: Dianne P. Mann of Conyers; a son: Dennis Perry of Conyers; sisters: Ruby Kines of Jersey and Frances Greene of Loganville; grandchildren: Dwane Mann, Delana Mann and Michelle Perry, great-grandchild; Jayden perry, nieces and nephews.

Betty G. Warren

Betty G. Warren , 73 of Canon, Ga died Feb. 23, 2006.

A native of Fulton Co. and a 27 year resident of Walton County, she was a daughter of the late Russell and Patricia Beachboard Groover. A retired sales associated with Wal Mart, She was a member of Bold Springs Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held February 26, 2006 in the chapel of Arthur Bowick Funeral Home. The Rev. Tony Dyer officiated and interment was in Hill Haven Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were Bradley Holt, Jamie Dye, A. Miguel Chavez, Estavan Chavez, Manuel Chavez and Carl Petty.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years: Daniel H. Warren; daughters: Linda Vick of Orlando, FL., Cynthia Chavez of Cincinnati, OH, Vicky Waters, Laurie Miller and Angela Petruzzelli all of Monroe; sisters: Doris Hensley of Asheville, NC and Teresa Vance of Lavonia; 13 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by children: Daniel S. Warren and Kathy Elizabeth Warren.
