Anna Montalbano Graham

Anna Montalbano Graham of Huntsville died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, Ga., after a recent diagnosis of recurrent cancer. She was 74.

Visitation, followed by a Rosary, will be held Thursday, November 9 from 6-8 pm at Laughlin Service Funeral Home.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, November 10 at 10 am at St. Mary's Church of the Visitation.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Anna was the fourth of eight children of Jake and Josephine Montalbano. She attended Louisiana State University and graduated with a B.S. in Education. She and her late husband, Dr. William Graham, were long-time residents of Huntsville, raising five children here during the couple's more than four decades in the Rocket City.

Although most proud of her role as wife and mother, Anna also served as a school teacher for several years in the Catholic schools her children attended locally.

An active member of St. Mary's Church of the Visitation downtown, Anna was well known in the local Catholic community for an unmatched love for her church and devotion to her faith.

Anna shared the good news with all who would listen, an effort aided by her position as a reporter for The One Voice, the diocesan newspaper for the Catholic Church in North Alabama, as well as her service in a variety of capacities at St. Mary's.

Anna lived her life in a way that brought honor and glory to the Lord, a shining example for others who desire a life and friendship with Jesus Christ, and was a humble and faithful servant to the end. Her devotion to God and her love for what is good and right touched many throughout the course of her life, and they are all better for it.

Anna's desire to make the world a better place also caused her to be active in state, local and national politics. She and her late husband were both well known for their long-time involvement in the local Republican Party, where their uncompromising fiscally and socially conservative viewpoints found a home.

A one-time Republican candidate for State Representative, Anna spent the vast majority of her time in the Republican Party working to get other GOP candidates elected, serving in many leadership positions within the party through the years including president of the Huntsville Federation of Republican Women, member of the Madison County Republican Executive Committee, member of the Alabama State Republican Executive Committee and delegate to the Republican National Convention among others.

Anna Graham was a good wife, a good mother, and most importantly, a good person. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends, who take comfort knowing she is now being rewarded with God's presence for the tremendous life she lived here on Earth.

She is survived by five children: Carol Graham Beck (husband John Beck) of Tallahassee, Fla., Michael Graham of Montgomery, Janet Graham of Tallahassee, Patrick Graham (wife Allison) of Monroe, Ga., and Alan Graham (wife Christine) of Lawrenceville, Ga.; 11 grandchildren: Matthew, Sarah, Philip, Anna Nicole, Katie, Madison, Tabitha, AnnaBelle, Sophie, William and Lauren; and two special brothers, Jake Montalbano (wife Peggy) of New Orleans and Andrew J. Montalbano of New Orleans.
