James M. Luellen
James M. Luellen, age 78 of Monroe, died on June 7, 2008. He was born in Champaign County, Ohio to the late Franklin Macy Luellen and the late Leathe Ropp Luellen. He was preceded in death by his sister, the late May Hecker. Surviving are: wife: Ruth Ross Luellen of Monroe; step daughter: Beverly Bailey Watkins of Monroe; sisters: Betty Leopard of Urbana, Ohio, and Jo Anne Amerine of Urbana, Ohio; four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday June 11 at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Malcom officiating. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Eric Hill
Eric Hill, age 20 of Loganville, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2008. Funeral Services were held Saturday, June 14, at 11a.m. at Victory Baptist Church, 88 Brand Rd., Loganville, 30052 with Pastor Derik Lawrence officiating. Burial Hill Haven Memory Gardens. A 2007 graduate of Loganville High School and attending Gordon College in Barnesville, GA, Eric was a member of Victory Baptist Church, an exemplary Christian and role model for young people and adults as well. He was also an accomplished wrestler. Eric was preceded in death by his sister, Laura Daugherty and is survived by his father: Mark Hill, Loganville & his fiancee Teresa Peters, Campton; mother: Mary Daugherty, Loganville; brothers: Alex Hill & Joshua Mann; sister: Michal Daugherty, all of Loganville; grandparents: Winston & Imogene Hill, West Point, GA; Douglas & Sharon Daugherty, Jullette, GA; Marsha Landrum, Jacksonville, FL; many aunts, uncles & cousins.

Robert “Geta” Burt
Robert “Geta” Burt, of Oxford, died peacefully at his home June 11, 2008 at the age of 47. Mr. Burt was a graduate of Monroe Area High School and enjoyed playing golf and softball, vegetable and flower gardening, camping, cooking and going to the mountains. He loved spending time with his family and friends and was a very dedicated worker. Mr. Burt is preceded in death by his daughter, Cassie Jo Burt. Survivors include: his wife: Christy Burt of Oxford; sons: “B.J.” Burt of Monroe, “Brock” Burt and David Burt, both of Oxford; granddaughter: Bailey Cook of Douglasville; parents: Gilbert and Ruth Burt, Monroe; sisters and brothers-in-law: Elwin and Danny Smith of Loganville, Linda and Alan McGinnis of Monroe; brother and sister-in-law: Arthur and Julie Bart of Monroe; several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service for Mr. Burt was held Saturday, June 14 at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, with Pastor Jon Ford and the Rev. Ronnie Capes officiating.

Alice Ruth Homer
Alice Homer resident of Loganville, GA passed on Friday, May 30, 2008, she was born March 20, 1958. She is survived by her husband: Gregory Homer; her children Christina Homer, Chelsea Homer, Brad Homer and Nicole Ortiz. Services were held in St. Louis, MO, on Friday June 6th, 2008. Marilyn Snow
Marilyn Snow, age 70 of Monroe, died on June 5, 2008. She was born on Oct. 11, 1937 in Walton County to the Ruby Ellington Jackson and the late Charles Hillman Jackson. She was preceded in death by her son, the late Charles Snow. Surviving are: husband: John Snow of Monroe; daughter and son-in-law: Ginger Snow and Kang Yin of Monroe; son: Steve Snow of Monroe; mother: Ruby E. Jackson of Monroe; granddaughter: Lili Snow Yin of Monroe. Funeral Services were held on Sunday June 8 at 3p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Malcom, Pastor Daniel Ramey, and Pastor Harris Blackwood officiating. Interment followed at Resthaven Cemetery.

Everett Douglas Briscoe Jr
Everett Douglas Briscoe Jr., age 55, died on June 5, 2008 in Dartmouth England. He was preceded in death by his father, the late Everett Briscoe, his grandparents, the late Lucious and Della Briscoe and Roscoe and Mittie Meadows. Mr. Briscoe was born and raised in Jackson, Georgia. He was a graduate of Jackson High School. After graduating from the University of Georgia, he visited the Virgin Islands, and found a love of sailing. He purchased a boat and began a career of boat charters. This is where he met his wife, Allison Grant of Dartmouth England. She worked for Douglas as his cook, and on board nurse. They fell in love and returned to her hometown to marry. After starting a family, Douglas opened “The Canvas Factory”, selling canvas sails, bags, and boat covers all over the world. His love of the ocean never left. He purchased a new sail boat, and sailed around the world. He was an avid sailor, but most of all a very devoted father to his three girls and loved them with all his heart.

Rubin Davis
Rubin Davis, 84, of Monroe died on June 3, 2008. He was born on Sept. 18, 1923 in Oconee Co. to the late Mary Carrie Davis and the late Guy Addison Davis. Surviving are wife: Jessie Mae Davis of Monroe; daughters and sons-in-law: Gail and Avery of Monroe and Jan and Van Boswell of Monroe; brother; Loys Davis of Monroe; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one great great grandchild.

Cora Lee Kirk Allen
Cora Lee Kirk Allen, 86 of Mountain City, Georgia, formerly of Campton, passed away at Mountain Lakes Medical Center in Clayton, Georgia on Sunday, May 25, 2008. She was born in Walton County and was the daughter of the late Willie Paul Kirk and Viola Childers Kirk. She is survived by her husband: John Thomas Allen of Mountain City; daughter: Brenda Cathey and husband Frank of Mountain City. She also is survived by her grandchildren: Jennifer Arbitter and her husband Stephen of Clayton, and Stephanie Shuman and husband Leiston of Savannah, and great grandchildren: Mark, Allen and Wyatt Arbitter and Sarah Kate Shuman. Surviving siblings include: Macy Smith and her husband Franklin, Jessie Mae Davis and her husband Ruben, and Mrs. Jean Bates of Walton County.

Mrs. Dayle T. Weinkauf
Mrs. Dayle T. Weinkauf, age 82, died Monday June 2, 2008 in Lakeland from heart failure. Born May 9, 1926 in Bartow, Dayle was the daughter of the late Roy H. and Lila (Campbell) Taylor. Mrs. Weinkauf was a lifelong resident of Bartow. She was a graduate of Summerlin Institute in Bartow and attended Florida State College for Women where she was an Alpha Delta Pi pledge. Mrs. Weinkauf was very active in her community. She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church where she served on the Alter Guild for the last 48 years and was also a member of the Daughters of the King. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She along with her husband "Doc" owned and operated the City Jewelry Store, that was formerly owned by her father Roy Taylor for many years. Mrs. Weinkauf was also an active member of the Bartow Airbase Historical Museum, actually assisting in the set up and acquiring memorabilia for the museum.

Annie Mae Durden
Annie Mae Durden Annie Mae Durden, 85, of Monroe died on June 1, 2008. She was born on March 16, 1923 in Walton Co. to the late Ethel Estelle Davis Mitchell and the late Robert Lawrence Mitchell. Surviving are: son and daughter-in-law: Terry and Darlene Armistead of Covington; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Eddie Mae Peppers
Eddie Mae Peppers, age 80 of Bethlehem, died on May 28, 2008. She was born in Walton County on Jan. 15, 1928 to the late Oscar Henson and the late Annie Ruth Hood Henson. Surviving are: husband: Robert Peppers of Bethlehem; son: Richard Peppers of Bethlehem; daughter and son-in-law: Linda and Gene Thompson of Monroe, Barbara Scarbrough of Monroe, and Gail and Junior Wilson of Winder; brothers and sisters-in-law: Reynolds and Ruby Henson of Bethlehem, and Edward and Helen Henson of Winder; 17 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Funeral Services were held on Saturday May 31st at 2p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Freeman, the Rev. Frankie Green, and the Rev. Chris Yancey officiating. Interment followed at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Cemetery

Tommy J. Terrell Nicholson
Tommy J. Terrell, 56, husband of the late Sarah Mae Harvey Terrell, died Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Heritage Health Care of Athens. Born in Tifton, GA, he was the son of Rachel E. Martin Terrell and the late Henry Ford Terrell. He was of he catholic faith and served his country in the US Marines during the Vietnam. In addition to his mother, survivors include: his daughter: Sarah Lynn Tranum; step daughter: Cherie Lackey, sisters: Jackie Love, Shirley Terrell, Jennie Knight, Sandra Conley, Brenda Perry; brother: Billy Terrell; grandchildren: Rhiannon Medley, Scarlet Clark, Sammy Lackey, Halee Lackey, Makala Ramey, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 2pm at Ross Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jason Rowe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery

Donnie Sue House

Donnie Sue House, age 76 of Monroe, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008. Funeral Services were held Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at 1p.m. in the Monroe Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Conner officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Cemetery. Mrs. House was a member at Walker Baptist Church in Monroe.

She is survived by her son: Charles Randall Allen; sisters: Norma Malcom, Monroe; Ruth Evelyn (Tommy) Ford, Covington; Juanita (Nita) Elizabeth Jones, Smyrna; and several nieces and nephews.

Edsel Jeptha Arnold

Edsel Jeptha Arnold, age 81 of Monroe, died on Sept. 5, 2008. He was born on Aug. 22, 1927 in Anderson County, South Carolina to the late Joe Mell Arnold and the late Onie Sellers Arnold.

Edsel served as an Airman First Class in the US Air Force from 1951 through 1955 and the US Air Force Reserve from 1955 through 1959. He received an Honorable Discharge from both branches of the service, having won a Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. During his service he had the honor of serving as chauffeur to General Eisenhower during his base inspection. He also had the pleasure of receiving a trophy and a kiss from Marilyn Monroe after winning a car race while stationed in Las Vegas.

He was part owner of Arnold Electric Service for almost 30 years, and then A&K Electric until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the American Legion GA Post 0064, and a member of the Walker Baptist Church of Monroe, where he served as trustee for many years.

Edsel is survived by his wife: Mary Peterman Arnold of Monroe; sons: Edsel (Eddie) Arnold of Cumming, Russell Arnold of Monroe, and Richard Arnold of Athens; daughter: Angela Arnold Dungan of Forsyth; grandchildren: Jacob Dungan, Tyler Dungan, Hannah Arnold, Cole Arnold, Eleanor Arnold, and Lillian Anderson; brothers: Joseph Arnold of Athens and Eugene (Gene) Arnold of Monroe.

Funeral Services were held on Monday Sept. 8 at Walker Baptist Church at 2 p.m.. with the Rev. Jeff Box officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Cemetery.

Roy Lamar Harrison

Roy Lamar Harrison, age 64 of Monroe, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008. Funeral Services were held Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Monroe Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with Dr. Jody Hice and the Rev. Mike Peavy officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Memory Gardens. Mr. Harrison was a member of Bethlehem First Baptist Church.

He was well liked and respected by everyone that knew him and very dedicated to his family. He was a Retired Sergeant with the Walton County Sheriffs Department with 24 years of service. He was a member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Past Deputy District Governor of Georgia Lions Club, and Past President of Monroe Lions Club, Life member of NRA.

He is survived by his wife: Brenda Harrison of Monroe; children: Pam & Lloyd Jordan of Lawrenceville; Amoree & Kenneth Mobley; Stewart and Tina Harrison; David and Tammi Harrison; Jay and Tiffany Harrison; Ravyn Harrison, all of Monroe; brother: W.L. Harrison of Monroe; sister: Vivian Smith of Gainesville; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and special Pets: Shadow, Biggy, Katie and Charlie.

Dianne Elaine Lane

Dianne Lane, 74 of Independence MO, passed away Aug. 13, 2008 at Centerpoint Medical Center. A memorial Visitation will be held from 2:00 -2:45pm on Sunday Aug. 31 at 302 Broad Street, (Judge Giles House). The service will follow at 3:00 in the Sanctuary of Monroe First Baptist Church.

Dianne was born on May 26, 1934 in Lansing, Michigan to Stanley and Dorothy (Hamilton) Dodge.

She graduated in the class of 1952 from Sexton High School in Lansing, Michigan. For many years Dianne lived a military life, moving many times and many place with her then husband Lt. Col. Pearce A. Lane. She has spent the last 27 years in Independence. Dianne enjoyed cooking, quilting, pinochle, reading, traveling and Silver Sneakers at the UMCA.

She is survived by one daughter: Nancy (Robert) King of Monroe; two sons: Richard (Enola) Lane of Rutledge and Bruce (Debby) Lane of Woodstock; one sister: Kathy Reck of Independence, MO; three brothers: John Dodge of Washington, D.C. and Bill Dodge of Lansing, Michigan; stepmother: Louis A. Dodge of Bradenton, FL; nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.

Eddie Casteel

Eddie Casteel, age 51 of Loganville, passed away Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008. Funeral Services were held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roy Hammonds officiating. Interment: Corinth Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Casteel was an electrician with S. W. Electric Co., Loganville. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter: Kelsey Gilley and is survived by his wife: Kelly Casteel, Loganville; children: April and Michael Seagers, Monroe; Crissy and Jay Gilley, Loganville; Lacy Casteel and Fiancee: Toby Barnes, Loganville; stepdaughter and son-in-law: Ashley and Dan Brown; stepson: Gregory Dixon; five grandchildren; parents: Ruby Lee Casteel, Loganville; O. J. and Marie Casteel, Monroe; sister and brother-in-law: Debra and Gary Davenport, Loganville; several nieces and nephews.

Ethel McCarty Carter

Ethel McCarty Carter, age 92 of Monroe, died on Aug. 26, 2008. She was born in Walton County on December 14, 1915 to the late John Jefferson McCarty and the late Annie Holder McCarty. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Ottis Carter, and her brother, the late Harry McCarty, and her sisters, the late Lillian Webb, the late Sibyl Brown, and the late Jacqueline Godfrey.

Surviving are: sister: Mary Ann Lee of Winder; brothers: Benjamin McCarty of Statesboro and Thomas McCarty of Bremen; bumerous bieces, bephews, and cousins.

Funeral Services were held on Thursday Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the the Rev. Glenn Money officiating. Interment followed at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Joel Scott Cash

Joel Scott Cash, age 48 of Monroe, died on Aug. 25, 2008. He was born in Gwinnett County on Aug. 29, 1959 to Ernest Cash and Shirley Pass Cash.

Surviving are: daughter and son-in-law: Ginger and Josh Miller of Winder; son and daughter-in-law: Justin and Lanita Cash of Ft. Thomas Lee Harper, 90, of Monroe died on Aug. 8, 2008. He was born May 28, 1918 in Morgan Co. to the late Lona Bell Watkins Harper and the late Lem Isaac Harper. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Betty House Harper.

Surviving are daughters: Linda Barrington of Union Point, Carol Bryan of Monroe; sons: Joel Harper of Nicholson and Ricky Harper of Monroe; sister: Ruth Towns of Covington; brother: Grady Harper of Wildwood, FL; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 3 pm on Saturday, Aug. 9th at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Blount and the Rev. Wayne Durden officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Cemetery.

William David Still

William David Still, age 66 of Loganville passed away on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008. He was born May 1, 1942 to the late W. I. and Emmie Sue Lacy Still. Mr. Still was a member of Fergus Lodge #135 F&AM , a charter member of Loganville Shrine Club and is survived by his wife of 45 years, Alice Stephens Still; sons and daughters-in-law: Steve and Delaine Still, Allan and Melissa Still and five grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Stephens officiating. Interment: Loganville Memorial Gardens.

Doug Moon, age 64 of Loganville, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008 in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Grey officiating.

Mr. Moon is survived by daughter: Meredith Moon of Bethlehem; father: Gerald Moon; brother and sister-in-law: Gary and Jean Moon, sister and brother-in-law: Diane and Michael Turner, all of Loganville.

Kate "Momma Kate" Peters

Kate "Momma Kate" Peters, age 93 of Monroe died Friday Aug. 15, 2008. Funeral services were held at 3p.m. Sunday Aug. 17, in the Monroe Church of God. The Rev. Wayne Durden and the Rev. Joey Grizzle officiated. Interment followed in Bay Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Loganville. Mrs. Peters worker for Carwood Manufacturing for 30 years and was a charter member of Monroe Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Peters who died in 1983 and daughter Jeannette Walters who died in 1992.

She is survived by daughter: Aluara Wilkins of Monroe; granddaughter: Charmin Young of Washington GA: grandsons: Lin Walters of Monroe; Kerry Wilkins of Monroe and Maurice Wilkins of Warner Robins; four great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Mary Sue Allen

Mary Sue Allen, age 94 of Monroe, died Saturday Aug. 16, 2008. Graveside services will be held at 11a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2008 in Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. David Laycock and the Rev. Tony Dyer will officiate.

Mrs. Allen was a retired secretary with the Walton County Board of Commissioners.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Allen and parents, Lavo and Vashti McGaughey, and three brothers: Holmes, Gene, and H. L. McGaughey. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Billy and Gail Allen of Monroe; sister-in-law: Lucy McGaughey of Mansfield; grandson: Rob and Jennifer Allen of Monroe; several nieces and nephews.

Flowers are accepted, or memorials can be made to Union Chapel United Methodist Vision (Building Fund), 2645 Pannell Rd., Monroe, GA 30655.

Sam Thornton, age 77 of Monroe, died on Aug. 15, 2008. He was born in Walton County on Feb. 22, 1931 to the late Jim Macon Thornton and the late Maggie Lou Johnson Thornton.

Surviving are: daughters: Shelvia Blackmon of Seneca, SC, Donna Krug of Alpharetta, and Teresa McCarty of Monroe; sisters: Peggy Byrd of Monroe, Carolyn Lunsford of Madison, Phyllis Hardigree of Watkinsville, and Nell McNelly of Monroe; brothers: Ray Thornton of Monroe and Floyd Greene of Winder; and six grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Monday Aug. 18th at 11a.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. W.C. Tribble officiating. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery.
