Cornelia Maddox, age 74 of Monroe died on Feb. 17, 2009. She was born in Walton County on July 11, 1934 to the late Arthur Elsmore and the late Florence Bridges Elsmore. She is survived by her daughters: Yvonne Wall of Monroe and the late Benny Wall; Florence Doster Cutsail of Monroe; sister and brother-in-law: Carrie and Barney Manders of Monroe; brothers and sister-in-law: Harold Evans of Monroe, Arthur and Doris Elsmore of Monroe; grandchildren: Michael Wall of Monroe, Dena Young of Monroe, Brandi Doster of Monroe; eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Draper officiating. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery

Ken Vaughn, age 89 of Monroe, formerly of Roswell passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 at Corinth Christian Church with Minister Lester Waters officiating. A WWII Veteran with the United States Coast Guard, Mr. Vaughn was known as the "Harmonica Man" and is survived by wife: Barbara Vaughn, daughters and sons-in-law: Tina and Mike Nicholson, Chapel Hill, NC, Kim and Smith Mitchell, Loganville, Pam and Steve Brushwood, Gordonsville, VA, Sandra and Bill Loth, Richmond, VA, daughter: Jacqueline Thurston, Gordonsville, VA, five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and niece: Suzie Hammett, Smyrna.

Gerald Bryant Stowe Sr. age 70 of Loganville passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009 . Funeral Services were held Saturday Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. in the Snellville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home. The Rev Owen B. Skinner officiated. Interment followed at Corinth Memorial Gardens in Loganville. Mr. Stowe was retired from Dekalb County as a Commercial Real Estate Appraiser and a member of Snellville United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by parents: Travis C. and Pauline Briscoe Stowe. He is survived by: children: Steve A. and Rhonda Stowe of Forsyth; Gerald Bryant and Elena Stowe Jr. of N. Charleston, SC, Jackie and Frank Ontiveros of Macon, and Kathryne Marie Stowe of Grayson; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; aunt: Mildred Daniel; several cousins.

J.T. O’Kelley
J.T. O’Kelley, age 84 of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009. Mr. O’Kelley was an active member of Center Hill Baptist Church in Gratis, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons, as well as on the building committee. He was a member of UAW Local 10, and he served his country in the Navy. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009 in the Monroe Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Marion Prather officiating. Interment followed in Westlawn Cemetery. Jacqueline Mitchem Whitlock, age 75 of High Shoals, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 in Sandy Creek Baptist Church, Madison, with the Rev. John McMillian, Sr. and Dr. Ron Tyler officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Whitlock was a Madison High School Class of 1950 Graduate, a member of Gibbs Memorial Baptist Church in Bostwick, and a member of The VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Madison. Millard Hinton “M. H.” Jones, age 84 of Monroe, passed away Feb. 12, 2009. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009 in the Monroe Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home. The Rev. Marc Lhowe officiated, and interment followed in Eternal Hills Memory Gardens in Snellville. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents: Millard Filmore Jones and Pauline Simmons Jones; six brothers and five sisters: He was a U. S. Army Veteran and served in World War II battles/campaigns: Southern Phillipeans (liberation) and New Guinea, March 20, 1944 thru January 3, 1946; served as scout (761) Combat Infantry Badge / Sharp Shooter Rifle. Decorations / Citations: Bronze Arrowhead; Phillipean Liberation Ribbon with One Bronze Star; Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars; Army of Occupation Medal; World War II Victory Medal.

Kenneth Deitle and the Rev. Andrew Erwin officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Memory Gardens. A member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church of Monroe, Mrs. Johnson retired from Millner -Aycocks Department Store in Monroe with 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Winston “Wink” Johnson and is survived by daughter: Reba Johnson Breedlove of Monroe; grandchildren: Dawn and Dusty Holmes; Lynn and Jeff Brady, both of Monroe; great-grandchildren: Walker Brady and Sawyer Brady, both of Monroe; sister: Mary Adcock of Monroe; several nieces and nephews.

Lois Margaret Harless
Lois M. (Polly) Harless, 76 of Loganville passed away on Jan. 24, 2009 after a long but hard-fought illness. Born and raised in Rocky Gap VA., she resided for many years in Howard County Md., and retired to Loganville in 1986. She was predeceased by her husband: Harold Russell in 2006. Polly’s love of animals was evident all her life. She often told stories of growing up in the rural hills of Va., and the baby farm animals that were her childhood companions and playmates. Always a dog lover, she later came to enjoy cats. She loved and took great pleasure in all her pets over the years, several being strays and rescues. They lived long and happy lives in her care.

Al Shugars died Jan. 30, 2009, peacefully at his home, after a long battle with brain cancer. Al was loved by all and will be deeply missed. Al was born July 7, 1933 to Arthur and Lou Shugars in Washington, D.C. He was preceded in death by his mother and his beloved sister Linda. He is survived by his wife Nora of 34 years; brother: George Shugars of Silver Springs, MD; sister: Marilyn Hancock, Mt. Eloise Henderson, age 75 of Monroe, died on Jan. 21, 2009. She was born in Bibb County, Ga. on Aug. 18, 1933 to the late Samuel Pike and the late Thelma Bell Pike. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Samuel Carson Henderson. Mr. Royal W. Hardegree
Mr. Royal W. Hardegree, age 90, of Winder, Ga. died Jan. 25, 2009. A native and lifelong resident of Barrow County, he was a son of the late Caulus and Nellie Wilson Hardegree. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Daniel Hardegree on Jan. 30, 2002. He was a Marine Corp veteran of World War II, and was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Hardegree was a retiree of Carwood Manufacturing Company with forty-seven years of service. Surviving are: daughter: Sylvia Hardegree; sons and daughters-in-law: Harris and Pat Hardegree, Wayne and Peggy Hardegree all of Winder; grandchildren: Travis Hardegree, Kristy Hardegree and Chris Manus; great grandchildren; Brooke Hardegree and Austin Toole; sister: Daisy Dean of West Palm Beach, Fla; brother and sister-in-law: Herbert and Sara Hardegree of Boerne, Texas

James Olon Polston
James Olon Polston, 85 of Chamblee died Jan. 23, 2009. He was a WWII Army Veteran, having served as a medical corps technician for the 24th and 41st Divisions in the South Pacific. Olon graduated from the University of Florida with an engineering degree and was licensed to practice as a mechanical, civil or structural engineer in thirteen states. He was a member of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers, and was awarded “Life Membership” in the National Society of Professional Engineers after Serving as a member or over forty years. He was also a Life Member of the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta. Olon was a member of Embry Hills United Methodist Church for forty years, and was instrumental in starting the English as a Second Language program at that location. He was active in his church and his profession, having served in many leadership positions. Olon was predeceased by his first wife of 43 years, Myrl Woodham Polston, and their son Dr. J. Timothy Polston.

Nancy Maude White, age 93 of Monroe, died on Jan. 23, 2009. She was born in Oconee County on April 18, 1915 to the late Charlie Gilreath and the late Claudia Mae Whitehead Gilreath. She was preceded in death by her son, the late Weyman White, her sister, the late Elizabeth Gilreath, and her brothers, the late Charlie Gilreath and the late Bud Gilreath. Surviving are: husband: Earnest White of Monroe; sons and daughters-in-law: Wendell and Dorothy White of Monroe, Gerald and Janene White of Monroe, and Carol White of Monroe; daughter and son-in-law: Mary Grace and Neal Pannell of Monroe; brother: Grady Gilreath of Monroe; nine grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Anderson T. "Andy" Maddox
Anderson T. "Andy" Maddox, age 68 of Loganville, formerly of Buford died Saturday March 21, 2009. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday March 24, in the Buford Chapel of TimStewart Funeral Home. The Rev. A.J. Mullinax officiated. Interment followed at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Buford. Mr. Maddox retired from the City of Buford Water Department after 20 years of service. He enjoyed working in the garden and also enjoyed NASCAR. Mr. Maddox was preceded in death by his wife: Rosa Lee Maddox; son: Roy T. Maddox; parents: Ernest A. and Lula Bell Maddox; brothers: Chester Maddox, J. E. Maddox, Gene Maddox, Carl Maddox; sister: Louise McDaniel.
