Mr. Alex Holmes
Mr. Alex Holmes, 81, of Bartow entered into rest on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at his residence.

Mr. Holmes was a native of Jefferson County, where he attended the old Bartow School. Mr. Holmes was a retired security guard from Thermo King Corp., and a member of Gordon Grove Baptist Church, where he served on the Usher Board until he was unable to fulfill his duties.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Gordon Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Walter Holmes, Rev. Allen Webb, Rev. Johnny R. Sampson, Rev. Charles Holloway and Rev. Dr. David Kemp officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Annie Ruth Thompson-Holmes of Bartow; children, Essie (Andrew “Sonny”) Daniels of Jacksonville, Fla., Annie (John Goodson) Bell, Carrie (Oliver) Gibbons, Rev. Walter (Delores) Holmes Sr., all of Bartow, Daisy Holmes of Baltimore, Md., Mattie Lowery, Charles (Earnestine) Holmes Sr., Robert (Eilean) Holmes, Elouise (Rev. Charles) Holloway, all of Louisville, Theodis (Elizabeth) Holmes of Wadley, Patricia (Onnie Vaxter Jr.) Johnson of Lithonia, and Adam (Tanisha) Holmes of Dublin; 27 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; brother, Steve (Geraldine) Holmes of Bartow; half-sisters, Diane Johnson of Chicago, Ill. and Lula Woods of New York; son-in-law, Roger Bell of Tennille; sisters-in-law, Bessie Roberson and Annie Laura (Charles) Scott, all of Wadley, Hattie Mae Holmes of Bartow, and Essie Johnson of Louisville; goddaughter, Vivian Ann Johnson of Baltimore, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Jawisky Young, Joshua Holmes, Charles Holmes Jr., Arcephus King Jr., Santania Best, Markies Johnson, Alex Holloway and Jadarrius Boyd.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons and Trustees of Gordon Grove Baptist Church.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sara Hobbs Holton
Mrs. Sara Hobbs Holton, 66, of Blythe entered into rest on Thursday, May 12, 2011, at her residence, with her family at her side, after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Holton was born to the late Martha Stewart Hobbs and the late Olon Hobbs and grew up in Wrens-Stapleton area. She worked for several local nurseries and greenhouses.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, May 15, 2011, at Faith Baptist Church, Blythe, with Rev. Bucky Halford officiating.

She was preceded in death by her son, Timothy Glenn Silas Sr.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Lawson Holton; three children, Donald R. Silas (Marolyn), Bonnie S. Morris (Mark) and Edward L. Holton Jr. (Patty); three sisters, Elizabeth Johnson (Jonie), Margie Cliatt and Polly Burkey (Russell); three brothers, Lee Olon Buddy Hobbs, Drew Allen Hobbs (Ann) and Edwin Hobbs (Brenda); eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to assist with expenses and mailed to Edward L. Holton, 2419 Hood Chapel Rd, Blythe, GA 30805.

Mrs. Jacquese W. “Jackie” Jackson
Funeral services for Mrs. Jacquese W. “Jackie” Jackson, 58, of Wrens were held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at noon at Sand Valley AME Church, Louisville, with Pastor, Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr. officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, John W. Jackson Sr., Wrens; daughters, Uvonda L. Jackson, Atlanta, Deltrye L. Jackson, Statesboro, Michelle D. (Anthony T.) Marshall, Clarksville, Tenn., Jessica F. Jackson, Statesboro; son, John W. Jackson Jr., Wrens; grandson, John W. Jackson III, Wrens; granddaughter, Addison L. Marshall, Clarksville, Tenn.; brothers, Harry J. (Recia) Williams Jr., Wrens, James Robert Lane, Fayetteville, N.C.; sisters, Carnell (Andrew) Hobbs, Atlanta, Marilyn Hudson Ryans, Augusta, Carolyn Samuel Kittles, Louisville; aunt, Gloria Moss, Stone Mountain; uncle, Johnny “Mutt” Davis Sr., Stapleton; five sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Johnny Samuel McGahee
Mr. Johnny Samuel McGahee, 71, of Stapleton entered into rest on Thursday, May 12, 2011, at his residence, with his family at his side, after a battle with cancer.

Born to the late Alice Louise Sheppard McGahee and the late George Carpenter McGahee Sr., Mr. McGahee was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. He was a farmer of cotton and peanuts, and later in life, an insurance agent.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at James Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tommy Anderson officiating. Interment followed in Waldens UMC Cemetery, Avera.

He was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Madison Marie McGahee.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Prescott McGahee; three children, Johnny Scot McGahee (Susan), Sherri McGahee Jahn and Samuel Prescott McGahee; three brothers, Billy Maurice McGahee (Sydney), Thomas Roy McGahee (Betty) and George Carpenter McGahee Jr. (Darlene); six grandchildren, Aaron Scot McGahee, Amber Elizabeth McGahee, Jessica Lynne Jahn, Justin Rodney Jahn, Jonathan Royce Jahn and Matthew Jacob McGahee; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers were Thomas Beckworth, Paul Griffin, Jimmy McNair, Berry Newman, Ronnie Parker and Wayne Smith.

Mr. John Gordon Adams
Mr. John Gordon Adams, 73, of Douglasville entered into rest on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at WellStar Douglas Hospital.

Mr. Adams was born and grew up in the Atlanta area, son of the late Mary Christine Holliman Adams and the late John Quincy Adams. After graduating from Mercer University, he returned to the Atlanta area and was a wildlife biologist with Georgia Power. He was a founding member of the Greater Atlanta Aquarium Society and published several scientific journals.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include his children, Judith Hilton Neville (Tim), John L. Adams (Kathi), and Christy Melinda Adams; a sister, Jane Edmonds (MG Maurice Edmonds); six grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mr. David Michael “Mike” Carter Sr.
Mr. David Michael “Mike” Carter Sr., 59, of Wrens entered into rest at his residence Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011.

Mr. Carter was the son of the late Lillian Bivens Carter and the late Paul Frank Carter Sr. in Augusta, where he went into the construction business. He was a member of Keysville United Methodist Church and was a Mason in the Martinez Lodge.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at the James Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Paul Moore and Chaplain Pauline Hughes officiating. Interment followed in the Keysville UMC Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Paula Faye Jarrard.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Wells Carter; children, David Michael Carter Jr. (Angie) of Harlem, Michael Wayne Carter (Shannon) of Grovetown, and Michelle Bish of Aiken, S.C.; four stepdaughters, Becky Thomas and Kim Peters of Blythe, Renee Moxley of Martinez, and April Peters; two brothers, Paul Frank Carter Jr. (Brenda) of Lincolnton, and Jimmy Carter (Pat) of Keysville; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many friends.

Pallbearers were Hugh Parker, Sandy Pillow, Joe Reid, David Skinner, Andrew Swan and Barrow Walden.

Honorary memorials may be made to United Hospice Foundation, 620 Ponder Place Dr. Ste 1-A, Evans, GA 30809.

Mr. Roger Clyde Gardner
Mr. Roger Clyde Gardner, 63, of Louisville entered into rest on Dec. 28, 2010, at Old Capital Inn.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Gardner was a retired substance abuse program director and had worked in the field of addictions counseling in the Augusta area since 1982.

Graveside services were held Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Johnson United Methodist Church Cemetery, Warrenton, with Joe Gardner as eulogist.

Survivors include his sons, John B. Gardner, Starkville, Miss., Joshua L. Gardner, Dublin; brothers, Rick Gardner, Beaumont, Calif., Tony Gardner, Gadsen, Ala., Joe Gardner, Mesa, Ariz., Randy Gardner, La Habra, Calif.; sister, Sharon Cheatle, Burlington, Ky.

Lowe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Roxie Gay
Mrs. Roxie Gay, 71, of Dearing entered into rest on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010.

Mrs. Gay was a native of Wrens. She was a graduate of the Academy of Richmond County in 1958. She married, moved to Wrens and started a family. Mrs. Gay worked in civil service at Fort Gordon for 26 years.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Westview Cemetery, with Rev. Chris New officiating.

Survivors include her son, David Gay (Michelle) of North Carolina, Larry D. Gay of Augusta; daughter, Donna Williams (Alex) of Dearing; grandchildren, Lauren, Dusty, Trace, Ashley, Jessica, Brittany, Rob, Devin and Dalton; sisters, Betty Gain (Howard) of Florida, Ruth Ann Dunbar (Charles) of South Carolina; brothers, Larry Johnson (Jennette) of Georgia, and Billy Johnson of South Carolina.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family in memory of Roxie.

Mrs. Miriam Fleming Falzarano Griffin
Mrs. Miriam Fleming Falzarano Griffin, 84, of Thomson entered into rest on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Thomson Manor.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Griffin was a member of First Baptist Church in Thomson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Falzarano; parents, Lois Robinson Fleming and Reid Oliver Fleming.

Survivors include her husband, Beauford Griffin; daughter, Jana Falzarano Smithwick of Stuart, Fla.; stepchildren, Danny Griffin, Sharon Griffin Renner, Randall “Randy” Griffin and Michael Griffin, all of Augusta, and Teresa Griffin Kreiger of Texas; two brothers, R.O. Fleming and Hugh Robinson Fleming, both of Wrens; niece, Angela Fleming Rogers of Augusta; and many family members and friends.

Miss Peaches Camika Hunter
Miss Peaches Camika Hunter of Wadley entered into rest on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, in Augusta.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Solomon Temple Baptist Church in Moxley, with Rev. Eric Tate officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her mother, Inell Hunter of Wadley; five sisters, Roxanne (Gary) McIntosh, Wadley, Elizabeth Lee (Johnny) Horne, Hallendale, Fla., Sharon Lee, Hollywood, Fla., and Shannon Lee and LaShanda Lee (Darrin) Greene, all of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Greg Hunter, Account Lewis, Charlie Lewis, Chris Lewis, Ricky Lewis and Roosevelt Little.

Mr. Arthur Lee Hannah Sr.
Mr. Arthur Lee Hannah Sr., 56, of Stapleton entered into rest on Dec. 30, 2010, at Jefferson Hospital, Louisville.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Stone Springfield AME Church, Stapleton, at noon, with Pastor Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr. as eulogist and Rev. Tommy Walker Jr. presiding. Interment was in Lofton AME Church Cemetery, Wrens. Repast will be held at the Lofton AME Church fellowship hall. The funeral procession will leave the residence at 11:30 a.m.

Mr. Jimmy Houston, 91, of Louisville entered into rest on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010.

Mr. Houston was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late Joelisee Houston. He was a member of the Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church, retired from Ashland, Inc., in Brunswick, where he resided since the 1950s before returning three years ago.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church and Cemetery.

Survivors include his sister, Annie Willie Thompson of Louisville; friend, Fannie Walden Houston of Wadley; brother-in-law, Robert Jackson; goddaughter, Patricia Batts of Brunswick; nieces and nephews, Nola (Wyndell) Slater of Dearfield Beach, Fla., Christine Jenkins, Crystal McBride and Wyndell Boyd, all of Louisville, James (Janie) Houston Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four children that he reared as his own, Brenda Brantley, Janet Palmer, Linda Palmer and Gwendolyn Vaughner; caretaker, Mattie Thompson of Louisville; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Kenneth Alton Lyons
Mr. Kenneth Alton Lyons, 82, of Gibson entered into rest on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at the Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center, Gibson.

Mr. Lyons was a native of Glascock County and lived here all his life; he was the manager of Sophie’s Restaurant in Thomson for many years and served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 31, 2011, at the Mitchell City Cemetery, Mitchell, with Rev. Tommy Harwell officiating.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maline Purvis Lyons; parents, William Vick and Pearl May Lyons; two brothers, John and Willie Lyons; four sisters, Sophie Reese, Vera Harrell, Martha Burgamy and Mahala Paulk.

Survivors include two sons, Dwayne (Sharon) Lyons of Gibson, and Vick (Chris) Lyons of North Augusta, S.C.; four daughters, Elain (David) Stephens of Thomson, Marsha Lyons of North Augusta, S.C., Melba Vaughn of Augusta, and Lisa (Alan) Wasden of Louisville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
