Mr. Eugene Lockhart Jr.
Mr. Eugene Lockhart Jr., 58, of Wrens entered into rest Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Ways Grove Baptist Church, Wrens, with Rev. Jimmy McCullough IIII officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors are mother, Mary Lou Lockhart; daughter, Kesha Turner; six sisters, Darnell (Leonard) Farmer, Patricia (Ulysess) Floyd, Geraldine Lockhart, Shelley (Commit) Jordan, Coreen Simpkins, Earnestine Jackson; five brothers, Joe Lockhart, Glenn Lockhart, Arthur (Mytrell) Lockhart, Thomas Moses Lockhart, Robert (Julia) Lockhart; a dear friend, Ruby Stapleton; three grandchildren, Dexter Turner, Deunte Turner and Myeisha Dudley; a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Frank Leon Nelson
Mr. Frank Leon Nelson, 54, of Augusta entered into rest on Friday, Feb. 22, 2008, at his residence.

Mr. Nelson was the son of Marvin L. and Dell Williams Nelson and attended school in Wrens.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, at Harlem Baptist Church with the Reverend Philip Vestal officiating.

Survivors include son, Adam (Katie) Nelson of Macon, and Matthew Nelson of Harlem; one brother, Gary (Kathy) Nelson of Virginia; and several cousins.

Starling Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ruth Douglas Pennington
Ruth Douglas Pennington passed away Feb. 22, 2008, in Houston after a brief illness.

She was born the March 16, 1918, in Wrightsville. A devoted member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Ruth was active in the Current Study Club and Suzanna Wesley Class.

Following a private committal service at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, a memorial service was conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, in the chapel of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Houston.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Edith Daniel Douglas and Romanus Roscoe Douglas; sister, Sara; brothers, Carl and Paul; brothers-in-law, Andrew Pennington and Dr. Glen Pennington.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Willard T. “Penny” Pennington; daughter, Sara Lee (Tom) Pennington McInenly; grandson, Kyle McInenly, all of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; brother, Merl Douglas of Chicago; sister-in-law, Emily Pennington of Matthews; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

In lieu of the usual remembrances, it was Ruth’s wish that contributions be directed to Mount Mariah Methodist Church, Matthews, or the charity of your choice.

Mrs. Sara Huff Prescott
Mrs. Sara Huff Prescott, 74, of Keysville entered into rest Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008.

Mrs. Prescott was a member of Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Ed Chance officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

Mrs. Prescott was preceded in death by her husband, Roy N. Prescott; her two brothers, Freddie Huff and Alex Huff; and a sister Ruth Beasley.

Survivors include her children, David W. Prescott, Wrens, Gloria P. Sasser, Waynesboro, and Jane P. Wood, Wrens; two sisters, Clouise Willoughby, Stapleton, and Esteen Bonner, Rock Hill, S.C.; six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Carl Newsome, Wiley Prescott, Ricky Coxville, Dennis Prescott, Lewis Braswell and James Atkinson.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Arthur Roberts
Mr. Arthur Roberts, 93, of Stapleton entered into rest Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 29, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Stone Springfield A.M.E. Church, Stapleton, with Rev. Michael Ephraim officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Lola Roberts; son, Odell (Helen) Roberts; three daughters, Mary (Morris) Simpkins, Ruth (Charlie) Baker and Jeanette (William) Richardson; five brothers, Jimmie (Classie) Roberts, Luther Roberts, Lindsey Roberts, Mitchell (Ollie) Roberts, and Waymon Roberts; two sisters, Myrtle Usry and Pauline Davis; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; sister- in-law, Eddie Daniels.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Earl "Doodle" Smith
Earl “Doodle” Smith, 63, of Gibson entered into rest Monday, Feb. 25, 2008.

Mr. Smith was born in Warren County but lived most of his life in Glascock County. He was the son of the late Shady Earl Smith and the late Mary Laura Chalker Williford. He was retired from Georgia Pacific after 31 years as a supervisor. Mr. Smith was a member of the Magnolia Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy Pulliam and Rev. Tommy Harwell officiating. Internment followed at Magnolia Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son Jimmy Smith and sisters Hazel Smith Hunnicutt and Erlene Smith Padgett.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Vivian Smith, Gibson; sister, Carolyn Padgett (Hill), Warrenton; mother-in-law, Corene Todd, Gibson; sister-in-law, Elaine Gilmer (Allen), Gibson; nephew, Michael Gilmer (Stephanie), Gibson; great-nephew and niece, Breanna and Boone Gilmer; several other nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Bobby Newsome, Bennie Story, Eugene Norris, Junior Stewart, Dean Reese and Alex Ferguson.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Estella A. Smith
Funeral services for Mrs. Estella A. Smith, 78, of Stapleton were held on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Lofton A.M.E. Church, Wrens, with the Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr., pastor, officiating and the Rev. Leroy Britt, Sr., eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include six daughters, Mae Frances (Glenn) Johnson, Augusta, Janice ( Stephen) Johnson, Vernida (Frankie) Nesby, Pauline (Jeremiah) Robert, all of Louisville, Inell (George) Cunningham, Stapleton, and Geneva Williams, Waynesboro; four sons David (Antoine) Smith, Louisville, Henry (Patricia) Smith, Wrens, Robert (Ann) Smith, Augusta, and James (Jackie) Smith, Atlanta; one brother Lamar Avery, Orlando, Fla.; sister, Sally (Willie Huber) Smith, Stapleton; three sisters-in-law, Ruby Brown, Pauline Crowder, both of Wrens, Ada Lee Smith, Stapleton; close friend of the family, Mary Reese; 27 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Charles Milton Steed
Charles Milton Steed, 91, entered into rest on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, while being cared for by his wife and his children in Statesboro.

Mr. Steed served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Louisville, where he lived all of his life. Mr. Steed was a Mason, deacon and Sunday school teacher, where he was a member for over 52 years.

The service was held on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Louisville. The Rev. Larry Montogomery officiated. Burial followed in the Louisville City Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by a great-grandchild, Jamie Cowan.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marguerite C. Steed of Louisville; two daughters, Lynda (Steve) Lewis and Barbara (Bobby) Reid, both of Statesboro; five granddaughters, Marianne (Anthony) LeFebvre of Brooklet, Susan (Buddy) Pullam of Statesboro, Lisa (Joe) Onovc of Richmond Hill, Amy Tapley of Statesboro and Julie (Richie) Brown of Lake City, Fla.; sister, Lucy Strickland of Louisville; and eight great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were John Murphy, Larry Stanley, Mike McDowell, Frank Etheridge, Larry Morgan, William Rabun and Don Handberry.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the T.W. Wilson Sunday School Class and deacons of the First Baptist Church.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Louisville, Ga., 101 East Ninth Street, Louisville, GA 30434; and Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.

Master Jermaine Tarver Jr.
Master Jermaine Tarver Jr. departed this life Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Trinity Hospital, Augusta.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Wallace Mason officiating.

Survivors include his parents, Jontae Holmes and Jermaine Tarver Sr. of Louisville; brother, Antoine Holmes; paternal grandparents, Earl James Hill of Louisville and Betty Jean Tarver Brown of Wadley; maternal grandparents, Hosea Holmes and Kathleen Holmes and Edna Beach of Augusta; great-grandparents, Mary E. Hill of Louisville and Augustine Green of Augusta; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Robert Lewis Cunningham Sr.
Mr. Robert Lewis Cunningham Sr. departed this life Sunday, March 9, 2008, at an Emanuel County nursing facility.

Mr. Cunningham was a native of Jefferson County.

Private Services were held Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

Survivors include his wife, Katie Mae Cunningham of Louisville; his children, Willie Mae (Arcefus) of Wadley, Robert Lewis Cunningham Jr., Eddie Lee (Carolyn) Cunningham, Eugene Cunningham, Ronnie Cunningham, all of Louisville, Tommie Lee Cunningham, Bill Cunningham, Gail (Marcus) White, Diane Cunningham and Lisa Cunningham, all of Augusta; 25 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; a host of loving cousins, including two special cousins, John and Zannie Cunningham of Louisville.

Mr. Richard Ellis
Mr. Richard Ellis, 22, of Gibson entered into rest Friday, March 7, 2008.

Mr. Ellis was a member of Gibson First Baptist Church.

Graveside services were held Monday, March 10, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Wrens Memorial Garden, with Pastor Diane Evans officiating.

Mr. Ellis is preceded in death by his mother, Georgia Newman.

Survivors include his father, William Haynes Ellis Sr.; a brother, Darien (Dale) Ellis; three sisters, Dawn (John) Toney, Roxanna (Charles) Reese and Tammy Williams; his grandfather, John “Papa” Cooler; three nieces and nine nephews, and his girlfriend Stephanie Thompson.

Pallbearers were Cliff McGahee, J.T. Toney, Lance Ellis, Billy Boulineau and Alvey Lamb.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Alexander Lincoln Goodson
Mr. Alexander Lincoln Goodson, 54, formerly of Wrens entered into rest at the Hahnenan Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. on March 5, 2008.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 2:30 p.m. at the New Zion Baptist Church, Wrens, with the Rev. Dr. W. L. Jones officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita M. Goodson, Philadelphia, Pa.; seven children, Neatra Moore, Philadelphia, Pa., Dalmon (Bridget) Smith, Petersburg, Va., Alexandria (Jerome) Blanks, Ala., Dyneius (Dolly) Goodson, Mitchell, Darneia Goodson, Hephzibah, Keisha Goodson, Tasha Goodson, both of Augusta; mother, Reba Goodson, Wrens; five sisters Ella (Marty) Smith, Albany, Faye Smith, Atlanta, Cheryl Davis, Rock Away, N.Y., Eleanor (Larry) Jackson, and Carolyn Thomas, Wrens; seven brothers, James (Christine) Goodson Jr., John W. Goodson, Stanley R. (Martha) Goodson, all of Wrens, Eddie James (Marta) Goodson, Clayton (Linda) Goodson, both of Augusta, Walter Thomas, Avera, and Michael (Wanda) Thomas, Atlanta; two brothers-in-law, Ronald Moore and Kenny Moore both of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Marion Harden, Keysville, Junie Mae Palmer, Matthews; 17 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Frank James Maddox Sr.
Mr. Frank James Maddox Sr. of Augusta entered into rest Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Doctors Hospital.

Mr. Maddox was a native of Richmond County and a dedicated and faithful member of Immaculate Conception Church and the Church of the Most Holy Trinity; served as a Eucharistic Minister; volunteered to transport church members; a graduate of Immaculate Conception Academy and attended Boggs Academy in Keysville, where he completed a course of study in Automotive Sciences and was employed at the Savannah River Plant. He coached various youth athletic teams; helped with the establishment of the Carrie Mays Community Center; served as chairman of the Turpin Hill Neighborhood Association and delivered Meals on Wheels.

Funeral mass was held Friday, March 7, 2008, at 12:15 p.m. at The Church of the Most Holy Trinity with Father Michael Lubinsky officiating. Burial was in Walker Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie Maddox, Augusta; three children, Frank James (Ilene) Maddox Jr., Minnetonka, Minn., Christopher A. (Deborah) Maddox Sr., Bear, Del., and Dr. Lisa M. Maddox, Havre de Grace, Md.; three sisters, Rev. DeBirdie Pugh, Washington, D.C., Janie O’Bryant, and Carrie Patricia Parks, both of Augusta; eight grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and god children.

Williams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. William Ross
William Ross, 54, of Swainsboro entered into rest on Sunday, March 2, 2008, at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta after an extended illness.

Graveside services were Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Coleman Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Jefferson County with Elder Tommy Rountree officiating.

Mr. Ross was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence L. and Mabel Nunley Ross.

Survivors include two sisters, Peggy Ross of Leesburg, and Linda Pierce of Temple; two brothers, Johnny Jack Ross of Augusta, and Kenneth Lee Ross of Hepzibah.
