Mrs. Elizabeth “Beth” Manning Westbrook
Mrs. Elizabeth “Beth” Manning Westbrook, 91, of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009.

Mrs. Westbrook, the daughter of the late William Harris Manning Jr. and Edna Blanche Anderson, attended public schools in Barnwell County graduating from Barnwell High School in 1934, and received a degree from Georgia State College for Women at age 19. She was employed by the Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C., and then in Birmingham, Ala. The family lived in Barnwell after WWII, moving to Louisville in 1951 where the Westbrooks owned a farm equipment business. The family relocated to Augusta in 1962 which has been her home since. While in Augusta, Mrs. Westbrook worked at Langford Middle School and later at Augusta College. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta for over 30 years.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at the Telfair St. Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home, with Dr. Rodger Murchison officiating. Interment followed at Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery in Barnwell, S.C.

Mrs. Westbrook was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Ralph C. Westbrook Sr.; and son, William Thomas Westbrook.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph Calhoun Jr. (Nancy) of Monroe, N.C., and James Francis (Mary) of Lillian, Ala.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Mary Westbrook Able (Guy) of Augusta; sister, Frances Achurch McWhorter of Evans; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. William Westbrook and Mrs. Quiren Klasen of Dalton.

Pallbearers were Bill Westbrook, Don Westbrook, Cade Westbrook, Wes Westbrook, Howard Tattershall and Gary Mohr.

Honorary pallbearers were Guy Able, Gene Wolf and Ben Morton.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Building Fund, P.O. Box 14489, Augusta, GA 30919.

Elliott Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jack Williford
Mr. Jack Williford, 82, of Gibson entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at the University Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Williford was a native of Glascock County, a Navy veteran, and he helped out with the Kilpatrick Association Disaster Relief program for 13 years. He was a member of the NARFE, a member of Glascock County Lions Club, a member of the Brier Creek Soil and Water Conservation District and a merchant of his general store for 18 years. He retired after 38 years of civil service at Fort Gordon. He was a member and deacon at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Avera, with Rev. Donald Lumpkin and Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Interment was in the Magnolia Baptist Church Cemetery, Gibson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Essie Belle Kitchens and Hubert Williford; and one brother, James Hubert Williford.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ruby Brassell Williford; two sons, Jack Leonard (Phyllis) Williford of Social Circle, and Wayne (Debbie) Williford of Gibson; one sister, Bernice Wisniewski of North Augusta, S.C.; four grandchildren, Brenna Coggins, Kerri Shelton, Jason Williford and Brian Williford; and four great-grandchildren, Kaylee Coggins, Megan Coggins, Kate Williford and Jaleigh Williford.

Pallbearers were Bill May, Jimmy Steptoe, Charles Roberts Sr., Calvin McCoy, Mike Neal and Ralph Mauldin.

Honorary Pallbearers were deacons of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and members of the Brier Creek Soil and Water Conservation District.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Mrs. Doretha “Doke” Wynn
Mrs. Doretha “Doke” Wynn, 82, of Wrens entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at her residence.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Wrens Chapel AME Church, with Pastor Rev. Sharlene Woodruff-Hendley as eulogist. Interment was in Sugarhill Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Joanne W. Lamb and Janice W. Johnson, both of Wrens; three brothers, Melvin Holliday, Atlanta, J.D. Holliday, Stapleton, and Vander Holliday Sr., Wrens.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. John F. Carswell Sr.
Mr. John F. Carswell Sr., 78, of Hephzibah entered into rest on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Carswell was a member of Story Mill Road Baptist Church. He was retired from Sunbeam (Formerly Claussen) Bakery. For more than 30 years, Mr. Carswell delivered The Augusta Chronicle.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Hephzibah Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Hephzibah-Vance Memorial Park.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geneva Baxley Carswell; parents, Charles and Lizzie McCombs Carswell.

Survivors include his wife, Katie K. Carswell of Hephzibah; children, Elizabeth Mims (George) of Texas, Chuck Carswell (Tricia) of North Augusta, Janet Day (Lee) of Illinois; stepchildren, Ray H. Meyers (April) of Evans, and Radie M. Smith (Thomas) of Matthews; brothers, Charlie Carswell (Mary) and Robert Carswell (Donna), all of Hephzibah; grandchildren, Jennifer Cheek, Melanie Boyce, Christy Wright, Amanda Cox, Jordan Mims, April Day, Jonathan Day and Brad Day; step-grandchildren, Amanda Clark, Megan Myers and Deanna Palmer; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers were Hunter Boyce, Ray H. Myers, George Mims, Jonathan Day, Brad Day and Jason Wright.

Hephzibah Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Lou Hannah Crum
Mrs. Mary Lou Hannah Crum, 80, of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at Eisenhower Medical Center, Fort Gordon.

Mrs. Crum, a native of Jefferson County, retired from the Carson Pirie Scott Co. in St. Paul, Minn., as a sales representative and clerk. She was a member of the Sand Valley AME Church, Louisville.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Sand Valley AME Church, Louisville, with Pastor Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr. officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include four sisters, Ida Ghee and Evon Hannah, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Marie H. (Granvil) Lamkin and Dorothy H. Wright, all of Augusta; three brothers, John Hannah, Atlanta, Horace (Tinnie) Hannah Jr., Augusta, and Morris (Ceola) Hannah, Wrens; sister-in-law, Amy E. Hannah, Milledgeville; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Frances Evans Dozier
Mrs. Frances Evans Dozier of Augusta entered into rest on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at a local nursing home.

Mrs. Dozier lived in Blythe most of her adult life and was a member of Blythe United Methodist Church where she taught children in Sunday school. She was recognized in 1993 for her many years of service by the United Methodist Women.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at the Lumpkin Road Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Ron Ferneyhough officiating. Burial followed in Blythe United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Dozier; parents, Thurston and Ethel Evans; brother and sister-in-law, James and Evelyn Duke Evans, all of Matthews; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Lucille Prescott Evans of Lexington.

Survivors include one sister, Joyce (Robert E.) Duggar, Augusta; one brother, Pilcher (Bernice) Smith, Anderson, S.C.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews.

Pallbearers were Bill Evans, Rick Duggar, Melvin Evans, Gary Dozier, William Dozier, Charles Dozier and Tim Browning.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Blythe United Methodist Church.

Mr. Eddie W. “Pookie” Drayton Sr.
Funeral services for Mr. Eddie W. “Pookie” Drayton Sr., 69, of Thomson were held on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Wrens Chapel AME Church, Wrens, with Pastor Rev. Sharlene Woodruff-Hendley officiating. Interment was in Sugarhill Cemetery.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Elmer Dyck
Mr. Elmer Dyck, 93, of Stapleton entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at Moundridge Manor, Moundridge, Kan.

Mr. Dyck was born in Hillsboro, Kan., to the late David and Anna Heppner Dyck, and was a farmer.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Pinecrest Mennonite Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Koehn Dyck.

Survivors include four sons, Vernon, Franklin, Monroe and Daniel; two brothers, Jona and Harvey; four sisters, Martha Mae Penner, Alice Loewen, Alma Koop and Mary Ann Friesen; 12 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Mennonite Church Mission Fund, c/o David Hibner, 4033 Hwy 296, Stapleton, GA, 30823.

Mrs. Marjorie M. Englett
Mrs. Marjorie M. Englett, 79, of Wrens entered into rest Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.

A lifelong resident of Jefferson County, Mrs. Englett was an active member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church. She retired after 40 years as a seamstress with Stapleton Garment Company.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at 11 a.m. in James Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. John Jenkins officiating. Interment followed at Ways Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Minnie Bell Rabun and John Samuel McDonald; and nine siblings.

Survivors include two sons, Terry (Annie) Englett and Rodney (Leanne) Englett; sister, Dorothy “Dot” Dye; two grandchildren, Evan Englett and Emily Englett; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Pallbearers were Kenneth McDonald, Dennis Robinson, Glenn Bazemore, Bruce Dye, Burton Dye, S.J. McDonald, Richard McDonald and Ricky McDonald.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Alda Farmer
Funeral services for Mrs. Alda Farmer, 87, of Wrens were held on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Stone Springfield AME Church, Stapleton, with Pastor Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr. as eulogist and Norman Roberts presiding. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include son, Samuel “Peter” (Deborah) Stone, Jersey City, N.J.; two daughters, Patricia (Dennis) Blake, Wrens, and Grace McClain, Newark, N.J.; two sisters, Mary (Tom) Farmer, Wrens, and Edna (Nathaniel) Robinson, Jersey City, N.J.; brother, J.C. (Ernestine) Stone, Council, N.C.; grandchildren, Ebony Blake, Wrens, and Telonica Blake, Valdosta; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; godchildren, Morris Hannah Sr., Willie Huntley Sr., Sara Wynn, Annie Ruth Gaines, Dorothy Gaston, Priscilla Chappell and Roxie Sims-Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Willie “Junior” Gamble
Mr. Willie “Junior” Gamble, 77, formerly of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at a local nursing facility.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the New Fleming Baptist Church and Cemetery.

Mr. Gamble was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late Willie Gamble Sr. and Idella Coppett Gamble, and the husband of the late Margie Jackson Gamble. He worked as a farmer and was a member of the New Fleming Baptist Church.

Survivors include his son, Willie Arthur Gamble of Augusta; sisters, Betty (Henry) Heggs and Emma (Willie) Bridges, all of Davisboro; sister-in-law, Lula Mae Gamble of Bartow; brother-in-law, William “Bill” Middleton of Louisville; three grandchildren, Alexandrea Gamble, Tenundre Patterson and Denundra Patterson, all of Louisville; aunts, Mary Gamble of Louisville, and Ruby Bass of Wadley; cousin, John “Sug” Coppett of Louisvillie; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Family maybe contacted at the residence of his sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Henry Heggs, 112 James Circle, Davisboro, or at Davis Funeral Home.

Mr. Glenn “Rusty” Glover
Mr. Glenn “Rusty” Glover of Augusta entered into rest on Dec. 18, 2009, at MCG.

Mr. Glover was the son of Jeanette U. Glover and the late Clearance W. Glover. He was a native of Thomson and lived all of his life in the Augusta area, where he was a welder. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church, Grange.

Survivors include his mother, Jeanette U. Glover, Augusta; two sons, Joshua W. Glover, Gibson, and Jacob Glover, S.D.; three daughters, Carrie Glover and Casey Glover, both of North Augusta, S.C., and Kristian Glover, Martinez; two brothers, Michael Glover and Jai Glover, both of Augusta; three sisters, Kim Hall, Aiken, S.C., Michelle Christiano, North Augusta, S.C, and Gina Jennings, Augusta; and two grandchildren, McKenzie Matherson and William Glover.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the CSRA Humane Society.
