Mr. Lamar “Marty Bald Head” Mathis
Funeral services for Mr. Lamar “Marty Bald Head” Mathis, 58, of Wrens were held on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Stone Springfield AME Church, Stapleton, with the Rev. M. G. Ephraim Sr., pastor, presiding and Rev. Dr. W. L. Jones, eulogist. Interment was in Harts Grove Church Cemetery.

Survivors include wife, Mildred Mathis, Wrens; one daughter, Tamara Nicole Mathis, Wrens; one son, Donnie (Laquedla) Shaw, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three brothers, Robert Lewis (Sharon) Mathis and Ronnie Mathis, all of Atlanta, and Paul Mathis, Wrens; nine grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Latasha Mathis, Wrens; eight aunts, five uncles, three sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law; two godsons, Ervion Brown, Brentwood, Calif., and George Brown Jr., Tucker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Eddie James Oliphant
Mr. Eddie James Oliphant of Wrens entered into rest on Monday, April 6, 2009, at his residence.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 10, at 2 p.m. at Ways Grove Baptist Church, Wrens, with Rev. Jimmy McCullough presiding and Rev. Thomas Berry giving the eulogy.

Survivors include three sons, Ed Willie Durden and Jamie McCloud, both of Wrens, and Eric Jones of Fayetteville, N.C.; stepson, Gregory Harvey of Atlanta; five daughters, Janice Burks of Jersey City, N.J., Zelda Oliphant of Atlanta, Pleschett Hodges of New York, N.Y., Gladys Walker and Eutoria Wright, both of Wrens; three adopted daughters, Tracy Bettis and Tammy Harris, both of Wrens, and Joyce Burls of Greenwich, Conn.; three sisters, Freddie Mae Reed of Mitchellville, Md., Carrie Oliphant and Belinda Majors, both of Killeen, Texas; four brothers, Jonas Oliphant, Bobby Oliphant, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Robert Oliphant and Herman Oliphant, both of Wrens; cousin, Mattie Belle Rowe of Wrens; two aunts, Mary Berry and Gertrude Nelson; and 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial services for Mr. William “Bill” Scott of Detroit, Mich. were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Eden Baptist Church Cemetery, Louisville.

Dr. Fred Marion Sims
Dr. Fred Marion Sims, DDS, 70, of Augusta entered into rest on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Isle of Palms, S.C.

Dr. Sims was a native of Augusta, son of the late Fred Puckett Sims and Marian Whitaker Sims. He was a graduate of the Academy of Richmond County in 1956, attended Augusta Junior College, the University of Georgia where he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity, Emory University Pre-Dental School and graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry in 1963. He entered the U.S. Army as a Captain at Fort Dix, N.J. and returned to Augusta in 1965 to begin private dental practice until his retirement in 2008 with offices in Augusta and Wadley. Dr. Sims was a member of the Georgia Dental Association, American Dental Association and the Eastern District Dental Society. He was also a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, the Augusta Country Club, the Augusta Golf Association and the Green Boundary Club.

Graveside funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at 3 p.m. at Westover Memorial Park, with Rev. John Pinson officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Woodham Sims; his sons, Fred Marion Sims Jr. (Tricia) and Craig Powell Sims (Monica); and grandchildren, Madeline Hart Sims, Franklin Powell Sims, Harper Louise Sims and Anna Marion Sims.

Pallbearers were Leeman Bennett, Don Grantham, Forrest Hensley, Dr. William James, Duncan Johnson, John Lee, Lee Parks, Dr. Thomas Saul, Roger Sidener, Craig Wardlaw, O.T. Fulghum, Hogarth Sandeford, William Loflin, Col. Myron Harrington, Miller Byne and Ernest Dinkins.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Augusta Golf Association, the Wallace Group and Par Five.

Mrs. Contessa Lynette Smith of Louisville entered into rest on Thursday, April 2, 2009.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Cannan Galilee Baptist Church, Louisville.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Stevens
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Stevens, 84, of Gibson entered into rest on Thursday, April 9, 2009, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Stevens was born in Augusta and was a homemaker.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2009, in the South Harlem Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Eddie L. Renew officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Johnnie Stevens; one daughter-in-law, Ramona Hayden, Martinez; four grandchildren, John Whitaker, Timothy Gray, Angela Newman and Tammy Hayden; and nine great-grandchildren; and numerous stepchildren and grandchildren.

Starling Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nellie Frances Hatcher Sullivan
Mrs. Nellie Frances Hatcher Sullivan entered into rest on Monday, March 30, 2009, in New York.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Spring Bethel AME Church, Louisville.

Mr. Vernon R. Toulson
Mr. Vernon R. Toulson, 50, of Creedmoor, N.C. entered into rest on Wednesday, April 8, 2009.

A native of Gibson, he was the son of Betty Toulson Hartwell and the late William Toulson.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2009, in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor, N.C. Burial was in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Durham.

Eakes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Maudie “Sook” Mae Brantley
Ms. Maudie “Sook” Mae Brantley, 95, of Wrightsville entered into rest on Monday, April 20, 2009, at Washington County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 25, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Antioch Baptist Church and Westview Cemetery.

Ms. Brantley was a native of Washington County, but lived in Johnson County most of her life. She has been a member of Antioch Baptist Church for over 70 years and was honored at the church anniversary April 19 as the oldest member. She attended Tucker School.

Survivors include her children, Joseph Brantley of Atlanta, Jimmy (Mary) Brantley of Dublin, Rosa Brantley of Bronx, N.Y., Dwight Brantley, Annie (Jaylynn) Davis, Bobbie Jean Josey, Dorothy Jean Brantley and Mary (Curtis) Clover, all of Wrightsville; one brother, Clarence Brantley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; godchildren, Linda Carter White of Bartow and Rev. Dave (Dora) Hall of Wrightsville; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grand children; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Family maybe contacted at the residence, 270 Crawford Road, Wrightsville, or at Davis Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dyanne Jordan Clinkscales
Mrs. Dyanne Jordan Clinkscales of Blakely entered into rest on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Early Memorial Hospital in Blakely.

Mrs. Clinkscales was born Jan. 5, 1953, to the late C.C. “Jack” Jordan and Mary Pace Jordan Chandler. She was a retired school teacher, a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Blakely, with Rev. Chuck Devane officiating. A private burial followed in the Blakely Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Philip H. Clinkscales Jr. of Blakely; two sons, Philip Clinkscales of Atlanta and Pace Clinkscales of Los Angeles, Calif.; three brothers, Lamar Jordan (Peggy) of Albany, LaDon Jordan of Atlanta, and Billy Jordan (Barbara) of Louisville; three sisters, Delores Baber (Jim) of Crozet, Va., Judy Brank of Blakely, and Janyce Smith (Espy) of Blakely; and stepfather, Homer L. Chandler of Blakely.

Pallbearers were her 13 nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be sent to either the American Heart Assoc., P. O. Box 409410, Atlanta, Ga. 30384-9410 or to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105-1942

Mrs. Versey Ann Haywood Daniel
Mrs. Versey Ann Haywood Daniel, 70, of Martinez entered into rest on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Daniel worked for Stapleton Garment Company and Sibley Mill, Graniteville Division. She and her husband delivered newspapers for The Augusta Chronicle for 13 years.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Damascus Baptist Church, with Rev. Joe Hester and Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Interment followed at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Daniel Sr.; parents, Wesley and Myrtice Haywood; sister, Betty Walden; brother, Benny Haywood; and son-in-law, Troy Savage.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth Daniel Jr. (Faye); daughter, Tammy Miller Savage (Jimmy); and four grandsons, Joshua Daniel, Tanner Miller, Zack Savage and Josh Savage.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Josh Daniel, Tanner Miller, Zack Savage, Josh Savage; nephews, Clay Walden and Charles Walden; and her friend, Jimmy Kitchens.

If so desired, memorials may be made to Damascus Baptist Church Youth Fund, 6375 Ridge Rd., Appling, GA 30802.

Mr. O.T. “Tommy” Fulghum
Mr. O.T. “Tommy” Fulghum of Augusta recently entered into rest.

Mr. Fulghum was born in Wadley on May 16, 1930, to Oscar and Eudie Fulghum. He lived in Wadley and Coleman Lake for 62 years, before moving to Augusta in 1992. He attended Georgia Military College and earned the rank of Cadet Major. He continued to be a supporter of GMC. In 1950, at the age of 20, he married Margaret Jeanette Garrick. In 1956, along with his father and brother, they invented the Fulghum rosserhead debarker. In October 1956, the family organized Fulghum Industries in Wadley to manufacture log handling equipment for the industry. Fulghum Enterprise was another arm of the family business, with Mr. Fulghum overseeing the sales and manufacture of fork lift trucks. He oversaw the merger of Fulghum Enterprises into Fulghum Industries. During his endeavor to expand Fulghum Industries, he achieved seven patents on equipment that are used in the forest products industry. He was elected to the Wadley City Council in 1968 and then was elected mayor of Wadley in 1969. He was also a member of the Wadley Lions Club and a past President of the Club. At the age of 29, Mr. Fulghum became a deacon in the Wadley Baptist Church. Mr. Fulghum began another company, now Fulghum Fibres, Inc. in 1990 to accommodate the needs of the pulp and paper industry. That company has now grown to some 29 locations in the United States, Chile and Uruguay with some 250 employees. In February 2000, Mr. Fulghum married Joan Fortner. He was a member of the Louisville United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Augusta Country Club, the Pinnacle Club, and was a supporter of the Fulgham/Fulghum Family Association.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 17, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Louisville United Methodist Church, Louisville, with Rev. David Hibberts officiating. Interment followed in the Louisville City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Joan; nephews, Heyward T. Fulghum and George H. Fulghum Jr.; nieces, Emily Fulghum, Susan Mason and Lisa Jensen; sister-in law, Betty Fulghum; great-nephews, great-great-nieces and –nephews; his aide, Jesse Gamble; housekeeper, Sharon Sturgis; and a multitude of cousins and employees.

Pallbearers were H. Heyward Wells Jr., Anthony M Hauff, Kurt Malzer, Terrell Marsh, John Bradley, John Lewis, Robert Evans and Ron McDaniel.

Honorary pallbearers were Levi Hill, Hogarth Sandeford, officers, directors and employees of Fulghum Industries, Inc. and Fulghum Fibres, Inc.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Louisville United Methodist Church, PO Box 269, Louisville, GA 30434, and the Salvation Army: 1384 Greene St. Augusta, Ga 30901

Mrs. Sara Hayslip
Mrs. Sara Hayslip, 81, of Wadley entered into rest on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Glendale Nursing Home.

Mrs. Hayslip, a lifelong resident of Wadley, was a homemaker and a member of the Wadley Baptist Church where she was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at 3 p.m. in the Wadley Baptist Church, with Rev. Tom Harrison, Rev. Rusty Manning and Dr. Ernest Purcell officiating. Interment followed in the Wadley Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie Hayslip; and a son, Ricky Hayslip.

Survivors include her son, Ronnie Hayslip (Sue) of Grovetown; four grandchildren, Ben Hayslip (Melissa), Kim Combs (Jason), Terrie Evans (Matt) and Kelly Williamson (Jordie); 13 great-grandchildren, Jace, Cade, Ella and Brodie Combs, Tarver, Camden and Knox Hayslip Brinson, Hampton Evans, William Hendricks Jordan, and Jenny and Sam Williamson; sister, Alma McTier of Panama City, Fla.; two nieces, Jane Fordham (Wayne) and Gail Mihaylo (Chuck).

Pallbearers were Randall Jones, Bobby Brett, Bill Cooper, Jim Hall, Chuck McMillian, Ben McElreath, Lyman Gordy and Wayne Battle.

Honorary pallbearers were Gary Hutchins, Don Hall, Kermit Little Jr., Tommy Lamb, Larry Purvis, Jimmie Tarver and Deacons of Wadley Baptist Church.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Barbara Jean Lafavor
Miss Barbara Jean Lafavor of Louisville entered into rest on Friday, April 3, 2009.

Miss Lafavor was born in Jefferson County to Frank Lafavor and the late Viola Miller Lafavor. She was a member of Cannan Galilee Baptist Churc and graduated from Jefferson County High School in 1965. She received an associate of arts degree from Fiorello H. La Guardia Community College and taught children with special needs for 30 years.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Brinson Hill Baptist Church in Wadley, with Rev. Robert Stokes presiding and Elder James Frank Lafavor officiating.

Survivors include her father, Deacon Frank Lafavor of Louisville; siblings, Elder James Frank Lafavor (Ellaree) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Eddie Lewis Lafavor (Vee Ann), David Lafavor and Jeffery Jordan, all of Louisville, Carolyn McKennie (Tom Edward) of Wadley, Lillie Lafavor of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Rosa Mitchell, Corine Driggers (Lee Edward) and Daisy Lane (Jimmy), all of Louisville; godchildren, Adam Brown and Sylvionne (Bobby); sister-in-law, Ann Lafavor of Jacksonville, Fla.; cousin, Mary Williams of Louisville; 26 nieces and nephews, 53 great-nieces and nephews; three great-great-nieces and nephews; children she raised as her own grandchildren, Jerome Gilmore Jr., Jasmine Kelly, Bobby Stone III, Willquavian Kelly and Bryce Stone; and cousins and friends.

Pallbearers were her nephews.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons and Trustees of Cannan Galilee Baptist Church and the Jefferson County High School class of 1965.
